Telenovela formats keep growing Fiction formats are among the most sought out products around the world today. Buyers demand series, TV movies, and of course, telenovelas. Demand is not limited to markets with little telenovela production know-how, but also includes countries with a long production tradition

Aquí mando yo, TVN Chile story distributed by Telemundo Internacional

TVN Chile is a great factory of stories, and Telemundo Internacional, the distributor for its books, adapts these fictions almost immediately after they air on the Chilean channel.

Recently, ¿Dónde está Elisa? was adapted by Telemundo and sprung a version for the Colombian market.

It was a Disney Media Networks Latin America story produced by Vista Productions for RCN.

“The adaptations of the TVN Chile books by Telemundo enjoy worldwide acclaim, especially in Latin America, Spain and Eastern Europe. Undoubtedly, combining TVN Chile books with the production might of Telemundo, guarantees success,” said to PRODU Esperanza Garay, Senior VP of Sales and Acquisition for Latin America of Telemundo Internacional.

Another Chilean book, Primera dama, was adapted in Colombia. It is a Canal 13 story acquired by great Latin American producer of telenovelas Caracol.

Many of the TVN books have versions in different countries around the world.

In Mexico, Azteca adapted La mujer de Judas (original story of Venezuela’s RCTV), and Televisa is featuring several adaptations at this MipTV, among them, Un refugio para el amor (remake of the Venezuelan telenovela La Zulianita) and Por ella soy Eva (adaptation of En los tacones de Eva of RCN of Colombia).

Argentina is also a producer of fictions. Muñeca brava, La Lola, Los exitosos Pells are some of the stories that have been adapted. All these three titles, for example, have Peruvian versions produced

by Frecuencia Latina. In fact, both Peru and Ecuador have become large consumers of fiction formats.

Teen telenovelas are products capable of generating 360° business for three years Some telenovela distributors are heavily investing in products aimed at children and teens. This MipTV will showcase several titles for the European market, which has become an avid consumer of this type of fiction. This is particularly true for southern countries such as Portugal, Spain, Italy, Greece and Turkey. Similarly, the proliferation of pay-TV and TDT channels, as well as the new digital platforms, creates new opportunities for these products, which thanks to all their spin-offs have become brands that can generate business for three years

Televisa Internacional is investing heavily in teen fictions. At this MipTV it will showcase four of these products: Sueña conmigo (co-production with Nickelodeon Latin America and Illusion produced in Argentina), Miss XV (co-production with Nickelodeon Latin America produced in México), La CQ (a sitcom co-produced with Turner Latin America) and Rebelde Rio (co-production with Record TV Network of Brazil). Sueña conmigo will have a French version produced by T&V, a joint venture of Televisa in France.

“Our commercial goal is for these fictions to become brands with 360° business opportunities. We invite buyers to be part of a business,” said Claudia Sahab,

The company has marketing teen fictions for some years, but in 2008 it reformulated its approach to exploit 360° opportunities: records, concerts, merchandising, licensing, etc. The strategy also resulted in the establishment of co-production alliances with other Latin American companies. The first title was Patito feo, a co-production with Ideas del Sur of Argentina. “It was a hit wherever it aired, and it has become the most successful Televisa teen product to date,” said Sahab.

The southern region of Europe is the area with highest demand for this type of product. Televisa Internacional is currently working to spread the word around Eastern Europe about the many business opportunities these products generate.

Pay-TV channels are the main buyers of children and teen fictions, because additionally to pay-TV rights, they also secure extended rights, including digital.

In some cases they also get rights for free-TV blocks, and in other cases, for new digital channels.

“It is a very relevant business opportunity with great success in Europe. A good story with good music is a hit. Music is the driver of most of these productions, and we’ve realized language is not a handicap and it doesn’t matter if it has an “American” look, as long as the story and the music are good.

Free-TV, which features mostly general content, often has no blocks allocated for this type of productions. In contrast, pay-TV offers more alternatives due to its thematic nature.

Chiquititas was a hit in Greece, where it aired the entire six seasons. Additionally, the cast launched a concert series across the country, merchandising licenses were sold, and the original CD as well as a Greeklanguage version of it were commercialized.

Dori Media recently scored a teen win with Split, which is currently on its third season. The first two editions were sold in over 80 countries, and in Russia, for example, sold as canned content, as a format, and in the form of DVD rights. The last season of Split, produced in

“Split is successful because it offers something trendy (the vampire theme), suspense. It’s a high-caliber production with a cast of actors with a universal look,” said Michal Nashiv, President and CEO of Dori Media Distribution and Dori Media Contenidos.

Dori’s newest product aimed at the teen market is Galis, a story centered around three boys who go to a summer camp thanks to a mysterious donation. While they try to fit in with the wealthy kids they will live the greatest of adventures. Dori Media Darset originally produced Galis for Noga Communications, which aired it on The Kids Channel, available through the HOT able platform.

Caracol shoots series Pablo Escobar

New Telefe International hits

Canal Caracol is currently shooting Pablo Escobar, the first production featuring the life of the infamous drug lord. It stars Andrés Parra.

The series comes after four years of research, which includes documents, interviews with victims and family members, as well as video and bibliographical records. It is produced by Juana Uribe and directed by filmmakers Carlos Moreno (Perro come perro, Todos tus muertos) and Laura Mora. The series is shot in HD in

great part on location in Medellin, Bogota, Villavicencio, Miami, and Panama.

Pablo Escobar marks the return to Colombian television of actress Angie Cepeda, who lived in Spain for the past 10 years. She plays the TV host who was Escobar’s lover in the 80’s.

The series will have 60 one-hour episodes. Camilo Ferrand (Las muñecas de la mafia and El cartel) is developing the scripts.

Telefe International attends MipTV with a catalog that features two successful telenovelas in Argentinean television: Dulce amor and Graduados.

Dulce amor is a co-production with Enrique Estevanez, starring Sebastián Estevanez and Carina Zampini. It is a family story with lots of romance and a hint of comedy, which had originally been planned for the afternoon block. It was eventually programmed in primetime and became one of the most recent hits in Argentinean television. At some point, it averaged 46% share.

Graduados premiered in March with a share of 48%, also in primetime.

It is a romantic comedy produced by Telefe, Endemol and Underground, starring Nancy Dupláa and Daniel Hendler.

“We’ve been warming up to the launch of Graduados at MipTV by showing the trailers to our clients.

I believe this comedy will be highly successful, especially as a format, since it’s easy to adapt. We will work hard to distribute it through Europe, as we do with all of our products” said to PRODU Fernando Varela, Director of International Business of Telefe.

Telemundo recently started shooting Corazón valiente, a new primetime telenovela with a story of love, action and adventure.

Televisa is getting ready for Cásate conmigo mi amor, a series based on the life of Mexican TV host and actress Galilea Montijo. Carmen Armendáriz will produce the story where Montijo will play herself.

Venevisión of Venezuela started production of a new telenovela: Mi ex me tiene ganas, written by Martín Hahn and starring Daniela Alvarado and Luciano D’Alessandro.

Record TV Network started shooting a new telenovela: Máscaras.

It features Mexican stars Adriana Fonseca and José Luis Reséndez. Telemundo will also co-produce De fina estampa with Globo TV. Corazón valiente is written Marcela Citterio, who brings a plot full of action, adventure and special effects in a high definition format. Aurelio Valcárcel Carol (¿Dónde está Elisa?, La casa de al lado) supervised the production, with Carlos Lamus as executive producer and Diana Ariza as general producer, and co-directed by Luis Manzo and Arturo Manuitt.

It will be a romantic comedy for the entire family. Televisa already approved the pilot, and three out of the 26 total episodes have already been shot.

Martha Carrillo, who is currently devoted to writing Amor bravío, shared the news with PRODU. “I won’t do it because I’m doing the telenovela (Amor bravío), but we have five young writers who are doing it under our supervision. Carmen will be producing it and we start shooting around May or June, when Galilea returns to work,” said Carrillo.

The story will be full of spunk, adventure, suspense and love, and will be shot mostly on location.

“The topic of exes appeals to me because everyone has had one and the possibility of getting back together is always there. There are several different cases and some of them are featured in the telenovela,” said writer Martín Hahn.

Executive producer Sandra Rioboo says it is a high profile telenovela with a good portion of it shot on location.

“We are shooting in fantastic locations. The production includes a cruise ship. It will surprise audiences due to the quality of the production,” said Delmar Andrade, Director of International Sales of Rede TV Network.

Additionally, they are still producing the telenovelas Vidas en juego, Rebelde Río, and the series El rey David, and in 2012 they will produce one more telenovelas and another series.

It’s worth noting that El rey David has been a hit, reaching first place in Rio de Janeiro with ratings of 18 points versus 14 points of its closest competitor.
