Distribution houses now focus on the Internet, VOD and Mobile devices Distribution companies such as Televisa Internacional, Telemundo Internacional, Telefe International, Dori Media Group, and Venevision International, started investing in the business of content for VOD, Internet, and Mobile devices, with great results.

International distributors are also looking to exploit the opportunities these new platforms offer to promote and broadcast their shows, and are even generating products especially created for Internet, mobile devices, and VOD. Case in point: Grupo Televisa and social portal hi5 recently announced a partnership through which they will launch a dualbranded premium video channel for hi5 users. The channel will benefit from Televisa’s catalog of short- and long-format videos which is currently available through its sites, esmas.com and tvolucion. There will also be an additional premium channel through micrositios.

These projects originate in Televisa Interactive Media, division led by Juan Saldívar.

Telemundo Internacional signed several deals to position its content on different digital platforms worldwide. In Spain, Doña Bárbara aired on TVE, as well as on VOD, Internet, and mobile devices. Similarly, Sin vergüenza and La tormenta, were made available for the Internet; for mobile devices, using iPod and iPhone applications; and for video game consoles such has Playstation and Wii. “In Spain, we have become the first telenovela distributor to offer entire episodes of our series on

For Capriles, next year’s challenge will be to deal with issues of intellectual property rights, given the immense growth of this medium.

Capriles is currently working to bring Telemundo’s international feed to new platforms, adding that they are already in negotiations with several providers.

Venevision International launched webisodes of the series Somos tú y yo: un nuevo día. They are 3 to 4 minutes in length, and offer parallel stories and subplots with the series’ main characters. These webisodes were created by Venemobile and Novulu, Venevision International’s new media

arm, which is currently actively working in the creation of original content.

The series’ official site, offers access to same-day episodes, behind-the-scenes footage, bloopers, and now the webisodes.

“Our mission is to exploit the company’s’ content through these new platforms. Every production that is made for TV now includes sub-products for mobile devices and other digital media. We already have a protocol in place, where producers are instructed to generate photos, ringtones, clips, and synopses, on top of what they

normally have to produce for TV,” says Rafael García, VP of New Media Distribution for Venemobile and Novulu.

Venemobile and Novulu’s catalog of telenovelas for mobile devices has about 10 titles, including Querido profe, Mi último deseo, Cita a ciegas, Cita en la playa, and La isla Paraíso.

Dori Media Group (DMG) is another production and distribution company working with new media. It launched Champs 12’s cyber community, which contains outtakes from the series and allows users to interact with the

entire teen cast through exclusive web content and chat rooms.

Also, actors will videotape themselves going about their private lives, and will upload the images to share them with fans.

Doris’s first venture in new media was Amando O, a 3-minute series broadcast on the Internet, mobile phones, and also on open air TV. Also, Telefe International, in association with MySpace.com, launched the cyber community of Los exitosos Pells. Fans can look up show information, learn more about the characters, see pictures and videos, and post comments.

Latele Novela has been a revolutionary channel. Despite some skepticism in the project by some people citing there were too many channels airing telenovelas, it worked and it is doing great.

Al fondo hay sitio has been on the air since June. It is a true depiction of daily life in Peru. It brings U.S. viewers a success that knows no borders.

Drawing from the success of Amores de luna in 2008, we are working with Ford Motors and its agency, Zubi Advertising, to develop the multi-platform miniseries Amores de luna 2: nuevos caminos, around the Ford Fusion 2010.

We hope to turn Champs 12 into a success within our territory. For a long time, we had been looking for a great title with all the ingredients to make it succeed among teenagers.

Versions of Los exitosos Pells of Telefe Int´l get high ratings The Mexican, Ecuadorian and Chilean versions of Los exitosos Pells, have reached a large viewership since their premieres. The format for the series is also being developed in Poland, Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Malaysia, Colombia, Greece, Turkey, and Spain.

Its original version has been sold in more than 20 countries.

Los exitosos Pells, a co-production of Telefe Contenidos, Endemol Argentina and Underground, has quickly become an international hit, both as a format and canned programming.

The Mexican version of the series, titled Los exitosos Pérez, premiered in early September. It is an Endemol USA production for Televisa that features Jaime Camil, Ludwika Paleta, Verónica Castro, Dalilah Polanco, África Zavala and Rafael Amaya, among others. It is produced by José Alberto Castro, also known in Mexico as “el Güero Castro,” who was invited by Endemol USA to lead this project.

Taping started in July at Endemol studios in Buenos Aires, where the original version was also shot.

Shooting is scheduled to run until March of 2010.

El exitoso licenciado Cardoso, was the title chosen by Ecuavisa of Ecuador, where it premiered on July 28th, reaching 32 points of rating in homes in Guayaquil, and 19 points in Quito. The national compounded ratings reached 26 points, with a share of 36%.

During its first week (July 28th 30th), it got compounded ratings of 24 points for the same target.

T he S tory Los exitosos Pells tells the story of Gonzalo Echagüe, a failed actor who is hired by the owner of a news station to replace Martín Pells, television’s most famous journalist.

Gonzalo becomes rich, successful and famous, and he marries Sol Pells, who also co-anchors in the newscast with him.

Martín finds out the marriage is a fake and that Gonzalo’s life is only a façade built by the station’s owner.

Televisa keeps diversifying Five years ago, Televisa decided to start producing series, which add to their diverse telenovela catalog and have brought positive results: audiences like them and our clients are satisfied. The goal is to keep experimenting until they reach a Mexican identity. They already have projects slated for the next 3 years.

It was only five years ago that Televisa decided to diversify and added series to its successful and diverse catalog of telenovelas.

The first 4, El Pantera; S.O.S.; 13 miedos; and Y ahora… qué hago?, were launched 3 years ago and received high ratings. The following year Televisa continued with the second season of El Pantera and S.O.S.. They also co-produced with Sony Pictures Latinoamérica the Mexican version of Los simuladores, an Argentinean original series created, produced and directed by Damián Szifrón.

simuladores, which by then already had original scripts by Televisa.

They also launched the new series Hermanos y detectives, from Telefe and also written by the same author of Los simuladores.

“The benefit of series is that they have great longevity. They can be re-aired in a year or two, and there can possibly even be a channel with all-Televisa series.

Who knows? It could be a very interesting project. But yes, we are definitely working on series every day and they are here to stay” said Eduardo Clemesha, general director of New Content and Formats for Televisa, when asked if Televisa had really embraced the format.

“The product speaks for itself.

Audiences like it and clients are satisfied. We have paid attention, have learned from our mistakes, and have done our homework well. But above all, I have a great team of people who are passionate about the projects, and great bosses who also support me” he said.

He also mentioned that due to the series’ success, they are now getting better projects: better written, more sophisticated and more professional.

For the next three years they already have a lineup of the series they want to produce, and they will keep experimenting until they

reach a Mexican identity in this format. Clemesha added that there are other genres to explore, such as legal and medical series.

Outside Clemesha’s team, other series have been produced by Alejandro Benítez (Locas de amor), Eugenio Cobo of CEA (Plantados), Israel Jaitovich of Unicable (Adictos), and Pedro Torres of mediamates (Mujeres asesinas). Televisa also directed resources and talent to Tiempo final 3 of FoxTelecolombia, which recently premiered on Fox. There are more series in development for 360º marketing.

Telemundo Internacional enters the Farsi-speaking Middle Eastern market During 2009 Telemundo Internacional consolidated its presence in markets such as Europe and Africa, and entered new Farsispeaking Middle Eastern markets such as Iran, Afghanistan, Bahrain, Iraq, Oman, Yemen, and the United Arab Emirates.

Karina Etchison, Telemundo International VP of Sales for Europe, Africa and the Middle East, says that sales in these markets have exceeded expectations.

Telemundo Internacional has been able to maintain the usual pace with existing clients and has added new clients to its portfolio.

“What we have noticed is that our clients’ behavior has changed slightly. They are buying products more cautiously, not just to have a leg up on the competition.

This trend has mostly had positive results because the product is now handled with

more care when it is premiered.

We see it as a win-win situation for both parties” says Etchison.

This year has seen the signing of important agreements in several territories in Europe.

These include both formats and canned programming. The format of Cómplices was sold in Spain and will premiere soon, and they also sold the format of Corazón de María in Russia and Destinos cruzados in Greece.

Middle Eastern market. Farsi is the main language in Iran, 60% of Afghans speak it, and it is commonly used in Bahrain, Iraq, Oman, Yemen and the United Arab Emirates.

“The first novela launched in Farsi was Victoria, the story of a strong woman who confronts her unfaithful husband after 20 years of marriage, and decides to start over next to a man who is much younger than her. The launch of Victoria has been a total success and we are thrilled with the results” says Etchison.

2010 For Etchison, 2010 will be a year of recovery. “Our projections indicate that 2010 will be a positive year that will bring lots of success to the TV industry, and thus to our company. We are getting ready with a catalog full of high-budget productions which will meet the needs of our clients, not only in Latin America, but also in Europe, Asia and the Middle East. Bellas calamidades, El clon, and Dónde está Elisa, among other telenovelas are expected to bring a lot of success to Telemundo Internacional” she added.

Caracol TV Internacional continues to enter new markets In 2009, Caracol TV Internacional gained access to new markets, such as Africa and Asia, as well as new Pay TV and themed channels. They also entered the Brazilian market through an agreement with production company Casablanca, and the distribution company Vip2000.

For Caracol this has been a very positive year. They have simultaneously worked on different projects and have positioned themselves well in Latin America, with hit shows such as Vecinos and La quiero a morir.

They have also been able to position themselves well in the U.S., and have been working hard in Eastern Europe with products such as El cartel and La quiero a morir.

“We really haven’t felt the effects of the crisis on our bottom line, neither on revenues nor on sales,” says Angélica Guerra, International VP of Caracol Televisión.

In 2009, Caracol launched internationally La quiero a morir: a classic love story, which fits Caracol’s strategy of offering a catalog with classic stories and telenovelas featuring more humor.

Such is the case of Bermúdez, a story set around a magazine publisher; and the 40-episode series El encantador, which will be introduced for the first time at Mipcom. El encantador is one of the first Caracol products to be launched in international markets prior to airing in Colombia.

“Oye bonita has also been a hit: it focuses on a younger target audience, and consequently features more music. We always

try to have a product that incorporates music, which is a very popular element in Colombia and Latin America,” says Guerra.

This year, Caracol Internacional was able to enter some new African countries with dubbed telenovelas. Guerra mentioned Ghana, Angola, Nigeria, and Kenya.

“We were also able to sell formats in Asia: a Vietnamese channel acquired Muñoz vale por 2, and Malaysia did the same with Telenovela star, a show that combines telenovela and reality TV,” she added.

Another difficult market for Caracol was Brazil, but they were able to gain access to it through

an agreement with local production company Casablanca, and the distribution company Vip2000. Company executives announced they were already working on several adaptations.

Guerra also mentioned their best-selling products were El cartel, Vecinos, and La quiero a morir.

“El cartel opened the door to new markets such as Pay TV and themed channels, in which telenovelas are not traditionally well received. Vecinos has had good results in Colombia, Panama, Venezuela, and Ecuador; and La quiero a morir has done well in Eastern Europe and Africa,” concluded Guerra.

Aniela, a new MediaPro production, is the most expensive project in Romanian television history MediaPro will introduce to this year’s Mipcom Aniela, a period telenovela which required the creation of over 100 costumes and the reproduction of 1900’s sets, both in studio and on location. It is the most expensive telenovela in Romanian television history.

Aniela is the most ambitious project of Romanian company, MediaPro. It was produced by Promance of MediaPro Pictures, and its goal was to recreate the Romanian society of the 1900’s.

To this end, period sets were reproduced in MediaPro’s studio in Buftea (Romania), as well as on location. Costume designers created over 100 pieces or wardrobe, and some original period pieces were imported from France. All this is capped with an all-star Romanian cast, which includes Gheorghe Dinica, Marin Moraru, Dan Condurache, Adela Popescu, and Mihai Petre, among others.

The telenovela has 160 episodes of 90 minutes each.

“Aniela will air on Acasa TV, but it will also be marketed internationally, since it exceeds the standards of any internationalcaliber production,” says Ruxandra Ion, VP of MediaPro Pictures, and director and general producer of Promance.

“It is a fact that television channels and distribution houses will be more cautious when acquiring new content and will focus on high quality productions. We believe that 2010 will continue to be a difficult year in

the international markets, but we are confident our strategy of offering high quality products will succeed in such an arena.

An example of this is Aniela, the most expensive television project ever produced in Romania,” added Ion.

T he S tory The telenovela tells the story of Aniela Elefterios, who gets engaged to a young officer of noble ascent. Her fate changes when her father commits suicide overwhelmed by gambling debt.
