Telefe International introduces its revolutionary format Aliados Aliados, 360º format of Telefe created by Cris Morena, is the star product for Telefe’s International Sales this Mipcom. Tomás Yankelevich, Director of Global Content of Telefe and son of Cris Morena, explained how the product came about and announced that next year the company will produce a telenovela with neutral Spanish targeted towards the international market Cris Morena and Tomás Yankelevich

Aliados is different because it first premieres 5 to 7-minute webisodes online and the following day it airs the episodes on broadcast TV. Fox launches each episode in 18 countries in Latin America a day after its premiere in Argentina.

The series first season (23 episodes) ends in November and its second season (17 episodes) starts in March or April of 2014.

On Telefe, where it airs Wednesdays at 9pm, ranks between the top three most watched shows of the day. “The typical time slot for the target teen audience is 6-7pm, but Argentinean audiences are not used to watching series in the afternoon. Programming it among the day series would risk wasting

it. Additionally, although the series is aimed at adolescents, it features artists that older audiences would also enjoy, and that’s why we programmed it in primetime,” said Yankelevich.

With the first 8 episodes, the site www.telefe.com/aliados had over 6 million visits and 29 million page views. The webisodes registered a viewing time of 95%. In July alone, Aliados was mentioned 850 thousand times by 230 thousand users, making Telefe Tweeter’s most popular, with a 40% lead over the second place.

Aliados not only spans web and TV, but also music (already went gold), shows, magazines, licens-

ing and merchandising, benefits clubs, games and its novel app “second screen” for Android and Apple.

in neutral

Telefe is focusing on positioning itself as a content creator for the international market. To this end, it will produce a telenovela in neutral Spanish next year.

“We want to test how one of our series works without the Argentinean accent, which limits us in certain territories. It will be a big-budget production and, because it will have neutral Spanish, we won’t be able to program it on Telefe in primetime.

It will air in the afternoon, which is a difficult time slot to recover costs. The idea is to recoup the investment in the international market and prove we’re capable of producing neutral accent content for the U.S. Hispanic and international markets,” said Yankelevich.

The telenovela will be a product of the department Ideas+Desarrollo (Ideas and Development; I+D), created by Yankelevich.

The goal is to take advantage of the experience of our fictions team, and at the same time expand it to create entertainment formats, a sought-after product by international buyers.

Televisa Internacional launches four new telenovelas

Televisa Internacional features four new productions in its Mipcom lineup: Por siempre amor, La Madame, Mentir para vivir (co-produced with RTI), and De que te quiero te quiero

Por siempre mi amor, starring Susana González and Guy Ecker, is the remake of Mi segunda madre, the original story of Abel Santacruz, which in 1989 starred María Sorté and Enrique Novi.

“It is a touching story about life, where the main characters suffer the loss of a loved one, setting off a chain of events. “We’re hopeful it will be received well,” said producer Ignacio Sada, who also worked on Un refugio para el amor.

Denisse Pfeiffer, Julián Aguilar and Ricardo Tejada, adapted the story

by Santacruz. It takes place on locations around Mexico City; Puerto Vallarta, in the state of Jalisco; and the Marietas islands, in the state of Nayarit.

The novela theme song –also entitled Por siempre mi amor, and composed by talented musicians Jorge Eduardo Murguía and Mauricio Arriaga–, is performed

by Spanish pop star David Bisbal, who previously performed the theme songs for Televisa novelas Juro que te amo and De piel de otoño.

In addition to Susana González and Guy Ecker, the cast includes Ana Martin, Macaria, Dominika Paleta, Héctor Suárez Gomis, Carlos Bonavides, Martha Julia, Pablo Lyle, Sofía Castro, Thelma Madrigal, and David Ostrosky, among others.

La Madame, starring Venezuelan actress Alicia Machado, is based on the autobiographical book Las

prepago (2007), from self-named Madame Rochy, a Colombian woman who ran a prostitution empire catering to politicians, businessmen and diplomats. La Madame, says Machado, “deals with prostitution without scenes of abuse.”

It is a Televisa-RTI co-production.

RTI is currently producing two new titles for Televisa: the telenovela La virgen de la calle, shot in Venezuela and based on the story of Juana la virgen, and the series Griselda Blanco la viuda negra, shot in Colombia, New York and Miami.

To complete this lineup, Televisa is also offering Mentir para vivir and De que te quiero te quiero.

Mentir para vivir is a police drama produced by Rosy Ocampo and starring Mayrín Villanueva and David Zepeda. It is also one of the first telenovelas to use tablet and smartphone apps for audiences to interact with the characters.

De que te quiero te quiero, starring Juan Diego Covarrubias and Livia Brito, is an original story by Valentina Párraga, adapted by Edwin Valencia, Carmen Sepúlveda, Luis Reynoso, and Lucero Suárez, who also produces it. “I’ve poured my life, soul and heart into this project,” said Suárez, who also produced Amorcito corazón, Las dos caras de Ana, and many others.

La selección and La ronca de oro: part of the Caracol TV main offer Caracol Televisión continues reinforcing its strategy of producing and distributing big budget productions. These innovative and high-quality fictions have made world audiences more sophisticated and discerning. This time, Caracol arrives at Mipcom with the fictions La selección and La ronca de oro, La suegra (co-produced with Sony) and El señor de los cielos (co-produced with Telemundo) Lisette Osorio

Similar to the successful series Rafael Orozco, el ídolo, which was based on one of the greatest of Colombian folklore, both La selección and La ronca de oro are stories based on real events.

Stories based of real people are not part of any strategy, “but as long as there is a character that merits it, we’re open to bringing his or her story to the screen. The most important aspect of these biographical series is that audiences can identify with the characters without knowing who he or she was. These are personal stories focused on the human aspect, showing the struggles of these characters to achieve success,”

said Lisette Osorio, VP of International Sales of Caracol TV. These products are somewhere between a series and a telenovela.

They are fictions with 70 daily episodes with the narrative flow of a series, although they do not come in seasons, which is typical of series. “It really is a format invented by us Latinos,” said Osorio.

La

selección

Shot in Colombia, Italy, France and Spain, La selección pays homage to four icons of Colombian soccer in the 1990’s (Higuita, Valderrama, Asprilla and Rincón). The series has consistently led the ratings in

its native Colombia and is now airing in the U.S. (UniMás) and Venezuela (Televen).

Executive producer Asier Aguilar confirmed that starting in January of next year, the company will shoot 60 additional episodes, which will include the life of soccer icon Iván René Valenciano.

“We’ll shot in cities like Cali, Medellin, Santa Marta and Bogota, before traveling again to Europe,” said Aguilar.

Luis Alberto Restrepo and Ricardo Coral will direct the fiction and shooting will take place over six months, with episodes starting to air between April and May of 2014.

La

ronca de oro

La ronca de oro is set in the 50’s and 70’s and depicts the life of Colombian ranchera singer Helenita Vargas.

“It’s a totally different series from what CMO has done to date. The fact that we’re shooting in the Cauca valley, with its light, its trees, farms and streets, has been a plus for the series. It looks gorgeous! Audiences will be surprised because it perfectly recreates the time and the region,” said young Colombia director Liliana Bocanegra, who will co-direct with Klych López.

Smilehood presents youth series Wake up!

Televen, Cadenatres and Telemundo plan new telenovela

Smilehood Media of Argentina brings to Mipcom Wake up!, co-production between Once Loops, Coca-Cola TV and Warner Chappell, produced by FrameZero.

Shot in Buenos Aires, Wake up! is a youth musical series created by Sebastián Mellino and Luis “Darta” Sarmiento. Mellino was the musical producer of the international Disney hit Violetta.

The series features young actors and singers from Argentina, Mexico and Colombia, including Mexican actors Diana Santos and Mario Sepúlveda, as well as

New York choreographer Leslie Feliciano.

Other talent joining the series will include Mexican actor Fernando Carrera, Venezuelan singer Mariana Vega, Argentinean singer from the band Miranda Ale Sergi, and the renowned Colombian actor Juan Pablo Raba, who reached notoriety with his leading role on Mi gorda bella in Venezuela. Raba later starred on many international hits, such as the Colombian telenovela El cartel de los sapos, the miniseries Tiempo final, and Fox’s series Mental.

After the success of Dulce amargo, Televen is now in pre-production of a new telenovela, also co-produced with Telemundo and Mexico’s Cadenatres.

The international cast includes Andrés Zuñiga, Carla Giraldo, Daniel Lugo, Luciana Silveyra, Georgina Vargas, Alberto Zeni, and Eduardo Victoria.

The new story, with screenplay by Venezuelan writer Ibsen Martínez, will feature a cast of international and national stars and will be shot entirely in HD.

Tony Rodríguez, VP of Dramas, and María Eugenia Marrero, Production Manager, will be in charge of production. Igor Manrique is the executive producer and Marco Godoy and Hernando Farías are the general producers.

Product of the joint venture between the three companies, the new telenovela will star renowned Venezuelan personalities such as Carlos Cruz, Fedra López, Flor Núñez, Kiara, Iván Tamayo, César Román, Sabrina Seara, Samantha Dagnino, Alexander Leterni, Dayra Lambis, Claudia La Gata, Georgina Palacios, Oriana Colmenares, and Sonia Villamizar, among others.

Bringing the story to life are Jorge Ríos and Roberto Flores, both from Mexico; and from Venezuela, Henry Colmenares and Marcos Canelón, well known for productions such as Lo que callamos las mujeres, Las bandidas, and Mujer con pantalones, among others.

Telemundo Int’l presents classic, urban and suspense telenovelas Telemundo Internacional is bringing to this Mipcom a balanced portfolio of classic dramas such as Dama y obrero, suspense and romance productions like Santa diabla, and urban stories such as Marido en alquiler

The new Telemundo telenovelas come backed by positive audience results in their respective programming slots in the U.S. Hispanic market.

Dama y obrero averages 516 thousand impressions (the average number of persons viewing a program) among the 18-49 demographic. This performance is similar to that of Marina, which also aired in the 8-9pm slot and became one of the most successful Telemundo novelas internationally. Dama y obrero is a classic story of love being derailed by clashes between social classes and eventually overcoming adversity.

Santa diabla, which mixes romance and suspense, is an original story by José Ignacio Valenzuela and features a stellar cast that includes Gaby Espino, Aarón Díaz and Carlos Ponce. It

averages 741 thousand impressions, “a good number with potential for growth after the impact seen by El señor de los cielos,” said Esperanza Garay, SVP of Sales and Acquisitions for Latin America of Telemundo Internacional.

Marido en alquiler is the second co-production between Telemundo and Globo. It reached an average 651 thousand impressions since its premiere, surpassing La esclava Isaura, which averaged 578 thousand impressions airing in the same time slot (9-10pm). It’s an adaptation of Fina estampa of Globo that tells an urban, contemporary story where a mother works hard while still being a devoted mother. “Brazilian telenovelas offer the realism, believability and an exquisite visual richness. We enjoy adapting this type of aesthetics to our culture, because it is also very

lively and colorful, and brings us closer to our viewers. We do adaptations for a multi-ethnic Latin America,” said Garay.

Telemundo is also presenting this Mipcom a telenovela of TVN of Chile featuring a mix of comedy and drama, which tells the story of a group of men separated from their wives who decide to move in together and live a singles’ lifestyle.

These telenovelas were originally dubbed for the Telemundo channel in Africa, and now are being repurposed for international distribution.

2012 was an excellent year for Telemundo Internacional. Productions such as Una maid en Manhattan and Corazón valiente sold well, and during the first two quarters of 2013, “La patrona and El señor de los cielos have been our strongest stories, with a marked dramatic content that required higher production standards,” said Garay.

Regarding new platforms, the distribution division is working hand-in-hand with the Digital Media department “to boost the content, not just for broadcast and cable TV, but for any device that connects the audience with good content anywhere, anytime,” she added. Telemundo Internacional recently signed deals with on-demand platforms such as Viewster and Viki.
