Calorosamente,

One of the most pleasurable things about art is getting to know new artists. It is

great when we see a work that really touches us, especially when it is due to its power, and not due to the semantic charge of its signature. These are the moments when it is worth dedicating oneself to art. Of course every line of work has its good and bad parts, but this is the moment of wonder, experience without judgement, fruition, beauty and love at first sight. And what a wonderful feeling it is... It is with this sensation in mind that we present Abre Alas 12, with inspiring artists who work with experimentation and in search of their own voice. Artists who do this in an enchanting, serious and consistent way. And what may seem a romantic choice of works that do not seem to dialogue with one another, is a collection that represents the spirit of a time: the now. It is of course only one possible reflection within the works that were sent to us. We were guided by the involvement that we had with the selected works, by our wish to see them exhibited and to be able to share them. If during the selection process we looked at the portfolios and proposals and tried to identify a consistency between thought, poetry, language, ideas, concepts and technique within the work of each artist, it is only now with the exhibition in place that we can really experience our decisions. It is on this note that we are pleased to present the works of 20 artists, genteelly welcomed to this procession of art and celebration. Ô, ô, ô, o Abre Alas is here! Warmly, Adriana Varejão André Sheik Paula Borghi

Alice Ricci

I’m interested in developing and demonstrating artistic procedures from games and repetitions that I build while appropriating visual information. I work with drawings, prints and everyday objects. Conceptually, my intention is that my work becomes a reflection on effort, on mechanical work, boredom and monotony.

Osias Yanov. Built on a low-cost gear, this formula, which is sometimes false rhetoric, here is an antidote. For the avoidance of doubt, Quintanilha says with his voice, in some passages of the videos that are presented in repetition: “That’s Arte Povera “ and, then, transmutes phrases like “tropical / sweetened “. So we see that nothing seems strange related to the context in which it is filmed; He is projecting material resources on key ecological dynamic. In Ingovernáveis (Ungovernables) we never find a process for a final piece. Quintanilha refuses to spend a performatic energy that repeats what is rehearsed. Osias Yanov.

24

The work of the INDIGESTION group is a laboratory of cross and common practices, considered insignificant with no recognition to exalt them, knowing that we must learn how to look to fleeting and modest ways of making things, which are often the only space for subjective inventiveness. The Workshop to fill fine sausages is a happening in which we will teach the process of filling a real sausage with different fillings where people will be able to intervene and fill sausages as we discuss issues relating to both the process itself as well as art and its intricacies. At the end a tasting of delicacies is offered to participants.

Janaina Miranda’s landscapes are essentially unnatural, and her procedure is organized in a formal structure: her photos are predominantly orthogonal, with a predilection for frontal perspective, with their quality enhanced by the layout in a grid. Oblique or diagonal landscapes are rare; her images do not result in glimpses, glances, or peripheral views. They confront the subject, claiming her perspective as an inescapable appearance and yet, even in this direct and frontal record, something resists in them, remains partially unintelligible (Excerpt from the text “Outras paisagens”, by Matthias Monteiro, 2015).

Nasci pois me sonharam um país.

(Dinato, 2015)

“Brandelli floats around the world in an eternal state of pleasure and suspicion. She cries out for us to look at the world with a little more grace and she plays with the things she finds lying around. “Do not think that one has to be sad in order to be militant”, Foucault said. There is plenty of playfulness, of playing and games in her work, and this doesn’t make it less political. ( ... ) There is humor and irony in the dialogue between the layers that make up the works. “High” and “low” culture. The “center”, the “periphery”. “Luxury”, “junk”. Put more and more quotation marks. Where is your God (Taste) now? Is that really what’s art about, good taste? Ha ha ha. Take yourself less seriously. Take ourselvess less seriously. “Cela n’a pas d’importance”, Marcel Duchamp continuously repeated, about life and about art.” (Dinato , 2015) Luisa Brandelli nasceu em Porto Alegre, 1990. Tchelo

42

Tchelo’s research is directed to the invention of rules and procedures for artistic production, systems that determine the form his works take. Thus, he studies the possibilities of drawing by investigating displacement processes, movement, evolution and rhythm through repetition, accumulation, disintegration and reconfiguration of information and experiences. The artist often uses the line since it identifies its inevitable connection to the way we perceive form and content of the world around us. It’s pure element that reaches antagonistic meanings, the line can unite or divide, can be path or border, unit or sequence, body, space or time.

We use the paintings of Victor Mattina to investigate our brains, as if we peeled an onion to its nuclear core. Thus, we find an atomic corpuscle, a kind of micro gland that secretes a hormone about which we knew nothing. After accessing this substance we now have a rude awakening and are aware of a new sound - a deep buzz that comes from feet meeting the ground. Last night, to our panic, we distinguished the intent of this noise while it was manifesting itself. This is the explosion of an endless flow cattle that runs us over every day.

Caligramas, 2014 / livro objeto / 24 x 34 cm Caligramas, 2014 / book object / 24 x 34 cm

“Under one’s gaze an idea becomes a sensation” Paul Valéry

It is possible that when you finish reading what is written in here, it will no longer be valid. Like any other product, this one has a planned obsolescence, an expiration date. My job does not have a fixed, unambiguous agenda. Shaping an idea is a profound change in perception. I believe in the disturbing synthesis of a gesture, in the instant that it shapes a unique body, where the work (as a living being) categorically rejects the possibilities that do not correspond to it’s total unity. The moment is reached when a work begins to work independently, and knows more than you.

Yornel J. Martínez Elías was born in Manzanillo, Cuba, 1981. Lives and works in Havana. He studied Visual Arts at the Instituto Superior de Arte de Havana (2002-2007).
