Editor’s note

T

raditions. The foundation upon which our beloved community is built on.

These rules, events and habits that we all love and hold dearly.

Every sits party ends in a similar fashion. Every O-week pretty much follows an established pattern. We are way past the point of even trying to remember how some of these traditions came to be. I often find myself wondering, when was Hero of War first sung in Pentti?

We only spend two years here, which in comparison to many other schools, is a really short time. And perhaps that is one of the reasons why we hold these traditions so dear. The freshmen are already taking charge of our clubs, and in extension, our community and student life. We’ve had quite short time to actually get accustomed to how things are done, so these traditions are something we can lean on.

These traditions unite all babas across years. They give freshmen a sense of pride, as we follow in the footsteps of those before us.

The very nature of traditions is to be a constant. Something that

stays the same, throughout the years. But at the same time, whether we want them or not, traditions do change. And new traditions emerge. I would be quite surprised to hear that all of our customs were invented during the first year of Mikkeli.

Year after year a different, unique group of people spends their time here. Not only studying, but laughing, crying and living. And at the same time, discovering and redefining what it means to be a part of this community.

To me, being a part of this group and these traditions is something truly meaningful. And I hope you feel the same way.

President’s Two Cents

T

he year 2019 has been kicked off, and here in Mikkeli that means one significant thing: we have officially entered the 30th anniversary year of Probba. We already got to experience Probba’s 30th anniversary week and festivities of the 30th Grand Annual Ball last fall, but actually Probba was at time only 29 years old. What does it actually mean, when someone has gained 30 years of life experience? Is 30 a special number?

I began to search for answers to these questions on the internet.

When searching on Google for the number 30, the search results were such as “Lauri Markkanen scoring 30 points for Chicago Bulls” and “A polygon with 30 sides is a triacontagon”. When I tried to be more specific, and search for the results by using the key word “30 year milestones”, I found some cliché life advise: “remember that the age is just a number” or “avoid comparing your accomplishments to the ones of other people”.

not exactly the most meaningful claims considering an association such as Probba turning 30.

However, is it even possible to compare Probba and the famous Mikkeli spirit, with its wonderful traditions and unique history, to any other life advice or story related to 30 years of life experience? I highly doubt it.

Having the possibility to study in Mikkeli and enjoy the international environment built during the last 30 years are truly things to be proud of. Our unique study program and the amazing people in this international community are something we should all be grateful for. We are lucky to be part of this program and have these traditions to cherish. Let’s all make sure that this special year is one to remember!

he power has been exchanged into the hands of Baba 18’s. They will now take the responsibility of our clubs, and parts of our student life as well. But who are the people behind the titles? Who are the master chefs of Baba’s Kitchen? And what kind of heroes can be found behind the counter of Pentti this year? We also have one brand new club included, as the first ever board of Baba Beer Club is revealed!

Skating for the Baltic On a cold winter day Babas gathered to Urpola with skates, some hot drinks, and a dream. That dream was to have a clean Baltic sea. And maybe some of those hot drinks.

The outdoors ice of Urpola was filled with green overalls, when students decided to leave the books inside and get some fresh air. The Ribbon Skate charity event was the perfect opportunity for that.

The event was a joint effort of many parties. Our brand new SkiBBA board kept us warm by organizing some exercise. The food and hot drinks were provided by everyone’s favourites, Baba’s Kitchen, as well as CafeStella, who supported our event.

After the event it was time for hungry students to head to Päämaja for some burgers.

What is Puhdas Itämeri?

Puhdas Itämeri is a non-profit organization we decided to support with the profits of this event.

For over 10 years they have worked to protect the Baltic Sea from harmful seaweed and pollution. During that time they have removed over 1 200 000 kg of seaweed. By having this event our community managed to contribute to this cause with more than 300€, which is enough to remove 1 500kg more.

Tiina Lapinleimu Klinge BBA 5

Tiina Lapinleimu Klinge started her studies in the BBA programme in 1993. She has an impressive track record within the international fashion industry. Tiina has worked with brands such as United Colors of Benetton, Tommy Hilfiger and Calvin Klein. She currently resides in Copenhagen, Denmark, but has lived and worked in many different countries.

What was Mikkeli like back in your day?

I recall the cold and beautiful winters in Mikkeli.

What are your three most memorable Mikkeli moments?

I remember the first day’s excitement in the auditorium when screening the different personalities of my co-students during the introduction.

The most memorable moments were the long days and evenings spent at the campus conducting case studies. We sometimes ended up in the local bars or restaurants to celebrate the finishing of a project. Often we also got together and cooked a family-like dinner with a group of my co-students that became close friends.

What did you do after your time in Mikkeli?

I moved directly to Stockholm pursuing my career in the world of fashion as a sales manager for United Colors of Benetton.

What is your work history like?

After a few years working in different positions at United Colors of Benetton in Stockholm and Copenhagen, I was recruited to be a Customer Service Manager at Tommy Hilfiger Denmark, overseeing the Nordic market. Tommy Hilfiger is today a part of PVH, and the company has played a key role in my career path over the past 14 years.

What is your current position like?

I work as a Marketing Director for PVH brands Tommy Hilfiger and Calvin Klein, being responsible for the Nordic Region, based in Copenhagen. Together with my team, I make sure our brands stand out in the fashion industry and beyond by executing the global marketing strategies locally.

While you were studying, did you ever expect to be working in your current position?

I have always been interested in the fashion industry. During my studies, I worked in clothing stores and already back then I was keen on finding out what influenced the consumers in their buying decisions. My goal was to work with a brand that I find interesting and inspiring - so in a way, I aimed for a position like the one I have now, already during my studies.

What skills or lessons did Mikkeli teach you that were most helpful in your career?

Teamwork! We all have different kinds of strengths and skills. Finding the best out of every team member, you will reach great results.

Any tips or greetings you would like to send to the current Babas?

Building a successful career takes time, lots of effort and patience. Be ready to sacrifice some free time and get out of your comfort zone. Always be open for new technologies and ways of working! Be true to yourself. Be loyal and never give up!

This is one of the phrases that you might encounter during the very early hours of Thursdays in Mikkeli. The shared apartments of our Baba community, or Babartments if you will, have hosted countless of events, bigger and smaller, throughout the years.

It is not only the best parties that these flats foster. The apartments also provide the residents and their friends with shelter and warmth every day. Many sorrows have been cried out at the shared apartments against the shoulders of fellow Babas. Also, many joyful news has been shared at the same locations as well. The Babartments of Mikkeli are something truly special within our school community. The significance of this institution of living together can easily be overlooked in our everyday lives. We rarely pay attention to all the great things that have been made possible due to the existence of legendary shared apartments such as Forttis and Klittis. The contribution of this tradition to the whole concept

of Mikkeli spirit is of utmost importance. Sit back, relax, and explore the different sides of life at the Babartments of Mikkeli with the current residents of Forttis, Klittis, Näyttis and Hellis, and learn how this tradition has made an impact on the Baba culture.

Joys and Challenges of Living in a Shared Apartment Living together with your friends provides you with a lot of opportunities to create heart-warming memories, but such an arrangement makes some challenges imminent as well.

First, let’s unfold some of the joys that result from living together. It is almost certain that everyone who has ever lived in a shared apartment can agree on it being a huge emotional asset for the residents. As Michael Hamm from Forttis puts it: ”Living with Babas is one of the main reasons I’ve been able to stay sane these three plus years in Mikkeli. Sharing all these experiences has been an unforgettable journey’’. Another one of the current Forttis

residents, Topi Hukkanen, has also been content with his choice of moving into a Babartment: “It’s fantastic. A great support network for whatever happens, and the boys are always around for cracking jokes. Easy-going for sure, just what I need currently.”

Living in a shared apartment seems to make the positive moments more special and emotional hardships easier to cope with since you get to share both sides of your life with your roommates. “Generally, the best thing about living with roommates is that you get to share the best and the worst moments of life with them. When you do that, the best moments become even better and the worst moments don’t feel so bad, because you get to experience them together with your friends, who essentially have turned into your second family”, as the residents of Näyttis, Arttu Pettinen, Jyri Ursem, Linus Eerola and Niklas Länsiö, summarize.

Regardless of the many positive things that arise from living with your friends, different kinds of challenges and issues are something that all residents of shared apartments need to be ready to encounter. Problems are always

imminent when a group of people needs to coordinate some efforts together. Taking care of an apartment and coming up with a common schedule for taking care of the chores or a shared visitor policy can thus be difficult.

“We all come from different backgrounds and from different families, so in the beginning it can be hard to mix all these different kinds of habits we have together. For example, some people like to do the dishes more often than others. Proper discussions need to be had, especially on the challenging issues. Otherwise it can create a lot of friction in the apartment”, says Neea Santama, one of the residents of the new Babartment Hellis.

You can also try to be proactive and avert big clashes, as Michael Hamm from Forttis states, while still highlighting the importance of good communication in hard situations: “I think a lot of the challenging situations can be averted by choosing your flatmates carefully. If, however, problems do arise, talking about them as soon as possible is key, instead of letting them brew inside you or being passive-aggressive.”

earlier: “I have lived in some pretty bad shared houses before, and the issues there were much bigger. But I think a few common challenges are related to who purchases the cleaning supplies and what to do when somebody throws an afterparty at 3am on a Monday without telling the other housemates. To overcome these problems, we have a Forttis group chat to update each other on impromptu get-togethers.” All in all, when it comes to averting and solving conflicts with your roommates, the bottom line is that communication is key.

Generation after Generation A unique trait of the Babartments is that more often than not the goal is to pass on the apartment to the next generation once the second-year students leave Mikkeli every Spring. Many apartments have been in circulation within the Baba community for multiple years. The names of the apartments have also stayed the same generation after generation.

The shared apartments of Mikkeli also unify our current students with the alumni who are former residents of Babartments. As Tii

Suokivi and Seela Suhonen from Klittis share one of their stories: “We enjoyed a beautiful morning with our few lovely girls from previous Klittis generations after the summer sits in July. There were probably 2 or 3 different generations there and others who ended up there. All of us were stuffed in our living room. It was funny to see how everyone acted like they were home again, and nothing was a surprise to anyone: ‘Is this door still falling off, can’t believe it!’.” It is an evident goal for many founders of new Babartments from the get-go to keep their new homes in circulation within the Baba community. “We were looking for an apartment in the autumn with Neea and Tseyang and happened to come across one on Pietarinkatu. We are the first Baba generation in this apartment, hoping to pass this forward to the next one when we move out”, says Sointu Koljonen, one of the residents of Hellis.

The time is at hand once again for the current second-year students to leave Mikkeli soon. Some residents of the current Babartments have already started looking for the next tenants to carry on the tradition.

Inside Babartments “If you’re interested in moving into Forttis, come talk to me, it’s the place to be. I’ve already chosen one person, but there are two more places. It doesn’t have to be a party every week if the house doesn’t want it. But it’ll always be a sweet place to live”, tells Mikael Blinnikka from Forttis. Many other Babas are certainly keen on finding new residents for their beloved apartments as well before they leave our school, so keep your eyes and ears open if you are a first-year student looking for a new abode.

Events and Accommodation The shared apartments of Mikkeli are commonplace venues for different kinds of social events. Ranging from housewarming parties to Pre-Pentti gatherings, many unforgettable moments have been experienced both at the older and the newer Babartments. ”Many hilarious things have happened in Näyttis.

For example, the one time we had a sits party during the annual ’hima-appro’. We had about 40-50 people taking part in our sits, and according to our neighbour she could sing along in the apartment next door. Luckily, we did not cause too much mayhem nor

inconvenience to our neighbours whilst having one of the best sits parties ever”, tell the residents of Näyttis. Sebastian Juuri from Forttis also thinks that the events organised at the shared apartments are of utmost significance: “I think it is quite integral to the everlasting buzzword ‘Mikkeli spirit’. Events held in Baba apartments welcome everyone to attend and makes sure we keep doing fun things together during our time in Mikkeli.”

The apartments are also known for accommodating visiting students who take part in the events organised by Probba and NESU-Probba for example. As Tii Suokivi and Seela Suhonen from Klittis tell: “Klittis is familiar to many business students around the Finland as the safe and secured accommodation after every bigger event, usually sits.

It is so fun. You get to know new people and it requires zero effort to offer a place to stay and make sure that they’ll be coming back for our future events also.” The Babartments truly are one of the cornerstones of the concept of Mikkeli spirit. As Tseyang Sillanpää from Hellis proudly states: “We hold the true Mikkeli spirit!”

But if there’s one certainty in being a student, it’s that there’s always more events to go and experiences to have. Let’s take a look ahead at what kinds of things are we experiencing during this spring.

Our community gathers to invite students and student-minded people from all over Finland to see a glimpse of the famous Mikkeli Spirit. #hype 14.3. The action-packed day filled with all sorts of activities can only be topped by the afterparty at city center.

And these are just the tip of the iceberg, as our spring is filled with events by our clubs, as well as numerous sits parties both here and in other cities.

10 Things that I learnt upon moving to Mikkeli

1. How to sew. I never imagined that sewing would be a part of my new student life.

But now it seems like a once-a-month activity 2. What pho tastes like! Hanging out with Vietnamese friends gave me a chance to learn about lots of new Vietnamese foods.

3. That it is perfectly acceptable to sing “My heart will go on” with a group of school mates. Apparently it is part of the ritualistic last part of a sits.

4. How to play pool! I had always admired people playing pool but never dared to even try learning. It feels awesome to do something that I never imagined I would be able to.

5. How to play strategic board games! Before Mikkeli, my knowledge of board games had been limited to games such as“scrabble” and “trivial pursuit”, while now I have learnt about games that require planning and devising.

6. How to campaign. Applying for a position on the Probba board was stepping out of my comfort zone and daring to speak up and do something I really believed in and in the process (and with the help of friends), I learnt how to campaign.

7. How wonderful it feels to watch Liverpool games with fellow supporters!

Before moving to Mikkeli, I had often imagined about going to a pub and watching a game (none of my friends watched football) and now I learn that it is every bit as awesome as I imagined it to be.

8. How to score in floorball. After 10+ years of being away from holding a floor ball stick, it was fun to learn to play again. So far I have only scored once, but that’s how we all start right?

9. How to debate! It is here in Mikkeli I learnt about debating in the “parliamentary” style with “government” and “opposition” teams and how to form good arguments and counter arguments. It is still a work in progress. But such a wonderful feel just knowing that I dared to try it!

10. How wonderful it feels to be included. In our school, we have a variety of nationalities and it feels so nice that every time I hang out with friends from a different country, they make the effort to talk in English so that I can feel included.

In the end, in the time here (so far) I have learnt how wonderful it feels to be supported.

From the time I tried to skate to the time I tried skiing and all the experiences mentioned above, it has been so nice having friends/classmates/programmates supporting me as I dared try something new.
