Editor’s note

I

’m not entirely sure what I want to write about or even say with the space that I get from my position as editor, but I will see where this takes me as I write it.

It has already been three months since the freshmen have entered our fantastic community at Aalto Mikkeli. This has been a community that I have been more than happy to be a member of since I have felt that I had finally established myself in the Finnish society and culture. I hope that even with corona on the rise that each new student has appreciated how close the community is and the bonds they’ve formed so far.

I know that we are in some tough times with everything being closed and no signs of it slowing anytime soon, but I want everyone reading this to have hope for the future as things hopefully return to some state of normalcy in the coming year.

The one thing I wish for the future of our school is that the freshman, even though they did not get to experience the same memorable events as we did, hold up the traditions of our community so that future generations of Baba’s can come here and enjoy what I go to enjoy. I want every Fuksi even remotely intrigued by the concepts of one of our clubs to apply for positions even if you didn’t get a chance to experience what they have to offer because these clubs and organizations are what make Aalto Mikkeli so unique.

I’m not the only second-year who feels this, and I am sure there will be many second years attempting to talk you into join clubs; all I want is for you to listen and think about the possibility of joining one or more!

On a more personal note, I want to thank everyone I have met from the first years and have gotten to know over the past three months. I was not sure what to expect from you all, and I was pleasantly surprised to see so many of you throw yourselves into the Mikkeli spirit.

Us second years have limited time left at this campus, and before you know it, we all will be going to do our own things in the near future.

So I want to let you all know that I have faith in this great community, and I hope we did an excellent job at making you feel apart of it.

President’s Two Cents

I

n times like these, it has become increasingly hard for any of us to find motivation to keep going.

Keeping this in mind, I must say that even with the situation being as bad as it is, the Mikkeli Spirit has not wavered.

Even with possibly the worst cards being played to you, Baba20’s, you’ve still managed to keep the spirits of our program up, and that is truly remarkable.

I know that we haven’t been able to hold many events for you guys, and trust me, we’re just as disappointed as you are.

However, it feels like right now events aren’t even the answer, as you’ve all shown so well. All this program needs in order to thrive is the continued efforts of everyone to keep contact with each other and not leave anyone behind, something that’s been proven time and time again in these recent months!

Remember what I said in previous bulletins? Keep being spontaneous. Keep on looking for those situations where you (positively) find yourself out of your comfort zone, and most importantly, don’t forget about those around you.

Alas, you still might be wondering what exactly clubs even do, which is completely understandable. As Probba’s and Nesu-Probba’s info sessions are right around the corner, I’m sure that all your burning questions will be answered, in the hopes that we’ll find many of you as our successors! Don’t be fooled into thinking that board duties are nothing more than a title, because trust me, there is so much that any club can offer you, and you certainly shouldn’t miss the opportunity to apply.

As a final note, I know I’m repeating myself here but don’t be discouraged to join the clubs we have here! Even if the year hasn’t exactly gone the way we would have wanted it to, I know for certain that there will be tons of opportunities to come. Keep up that Mikkeli spirit Babas!

Help Wanted: The search for new boards

Alexander Warén President

The ‘head’ of the Probba board, and the only post with an abstract take on responsibilities. Unique to this position, being the president might seem overwhelming and confusing at first due to the absence of direction in which you’ll be headed. Other board members have a significantly more straightforward approach than you will, but this is how you can truly make an impact!

As president, you’ll focus more on keeping up relations on campus and outside of it (with other business schools), as well as running each board meeting as you see fit. I can’t stress enough how important it is to keep reading your Aalto email in this role; it’s essential for keeping yourself up to date with everything that is going on.

But when it comes down to it all, I would say the most important aspect of being the president is being a role model for your fellow students. Traits that I think are the most important for entering this role are approachability, emotional intelligence, and healthy leadership. Be there for your classmates when they need you, and be sure that everyone feels comfortable talking to you. Lead as you see fit, but don’t let it get to your head. Lastly, don’t forget to have fun!

Being the president opens so many doors, so if you feel interested, don’t hesitate to apply!

Vice President & Corporate Relations Representatives The role of Corporate Relations Representative is considered to be the most demanding but also the most rewarding one. As the CRR, you get to take care of Probba’s yearly contracts with our corporate partners, attract new potential partners, get sponsors to our events and do fundraising for the Grand Annual Ball with the Corporate Relations Crew of your choosing. Previous experience about handling corporate relations and/or sales isn’t necessary but advantageous. However, with an active and fearless attitude, you’re set to have an awesome and rewarding year as the CRR of Probba.

Nicholas Bergius Treasurer

Greetings! My name is Nicholas, and for the past year or so, I have been working as our student board’s Treasurer. The role of treasurer mainly involves keeping our board’s financials in check.

This includes paying bills, budgeting, light accounting, applying for various sponsorships/grants, making sure people who owe Probba money pay up, and generally just lending a helping hand to anyone else who may need it.

If you are looking to become the next treasurer, some human traits that may prove to be useful are time management, very basic math skills, a basic understanding of excel, organized. Some important things to note are that you do not need any prior knowledge on accounting (I definitely didn’t have any), and although it is not absolutely mandatory, fluency in Finnish is recommended, as most of the bank statements/other bank documents are in Finnish.

Merika Mattila

Academic Affairs Coordinator & Secretary The job of the Academic Affairs Coordinator has always been a bit of a question mark to everyone. This is because a lot of the job description happens sort of behind the scenes (but is still incredibly important and interesting).

The Academic Affairs Coordinator is a sort of a “link” between the students and the Mikkeli staff. This includes discussing courses, professors, and other academic issues. The AAC is also a part of committees that meet a few times every year in Otaniemi to discuss academic issues together with people from Otaniemi and Mikkeli (some meetings might include sits and sauna in Otaniemi, just saying).

As a more of a visible responsibility, the AAC plans and organizes Orientation Week (the best event of the year) for the new freshmen.

This is done in collaboration with the school faculty and the other board members. In addition, the AAC is also the secretary of the board.

This means that she prepares agendas for board meetings and writes all discussed decisions to official documents.

In conclusion, the job of the AAC gives good insights to academic operations at a university level and it offers a lot of good experiences and skills for future life, including project planning and organizing, recruiting and training people, and discussing important issues in meetings.

Totti Ikäheimonen Event Coordinator

Event coordinator coordinates events. It’s not rocket science. You wouldn’t be here if you are into that sorta stuff. EC’s biggest events include Probba’s hottest national-level event, Mikkeli Road Trip (big RIP for MRT), orientation week’s Runnin’ Baba and arguably the best event of the year, Sillis (note to the next EC: have two, just to be sure). Other smaller events are Probba’s charity event called Ribbon skate and the classiest non-GAB-week event, Mikkeli Boat Trip.

EC’s most important attributes are creativity, systematicity and of course, staggering good looks. As Probba’s other event specialist alongside PC, Event coordinator should not shy away from other events in order to gain insight and inspiration for Probbas events (I swear they were all purely for research purposes). EC is prob(b) ably one of the Board’s less stressful posts, since all of the events are spread out evenly throughout the year. Or at least they would be.

Jemina Serkelä

Master of Ceremonies The Master of Ceremonies is the most glamorous position on the board. Who wouldn’t want to organize a ball for the wonderful baba community? The event in general requires a lot of work throughout the year since planning starts in January. The MC is THE person in this event, meaning it is up to you to choose the venue, decorations, speakers, invitations, band and all that jazz. You need efficient project management skills but also need to be skilled in team management since this 170 person event is in collaboration with our biggest shareholders. You get your own fabulous GAB team to assist you and work together with your fellow Probba board members.

In addition, MC organizes the Graduation Ceremony in collaboration with the school. You will be in charge of the Graduation buffet, photoshoot, hotels as well as the epic GrädiPentti & afterparty. The thing to keep in mind for this event is efficient communication with our graduating class.

All in all, MC is someone who enjoys planning and has an ability to see the bigger picture. As long as you are creative, determined and love to celebrate with your fellow Babas you will be good to go!

Veikka Partanen

Communications Coordinator The CC is responsible for Probba’s social media in its entirety, designing banner images, infographics, Facebook events, and whatnot. I really like my post as I am given practically free hands to use my creativity to deal with my tasks as I see fit. As a photographer by profession, I also photograph most of our events, but that is not directly related to the post. This post is what you make of it! I have decided to make it a photography/graphic design post with a twist of communications.

I would like my successor to be a really outgoing and quick-witted person with some pre-existing graphic design skills/understanding/ passion. However, no previous knowledge is required, but it surely won’t hurt you. I myself had little to no experience, but with relentless trial-and-error, and countless hours of YouTube tutorials, I learned.

And so can you. I’ll help you! And for heaven’s sake, you NEED to read your email. That is a requirement.

Yugang Kim

International Affairs Coordinator The IAC is a position that connects exchange students and international degree students with the student community, staff, and the whole school. The well-being of foreign students will be the priority of this position. You will be the first person that exchange students will contact when they accommodate in Mikkeli and adapt themselves to our academic program. It is also expected to deliver our international student’s voice to the board, faculty, and KY International Committee. I enjoyed it a lot as the IAC since it gave me control of the ways that I propel and arrange my duty.

The post will have to plan various projects that incorporate internationalism and the possibility of providing great memories to foreign students while they are studying here. Because of this, the IAC will suit you if you love working with people from different cultures and have the ability to facilitate communications and projects. But most importantly, you need to be a person who can respect diversity and individuality if you are considering to run for this position.

Hugo Uusi-Mikkola Project Coordinator

Project Coordinator, the provider of finest Probba apparel and the organizer and marketer of best events of the time in Mikkeli. The best position in Probba, if you enjoy taking your fellow babas on most (or least) memorable events of the year around Finland and in Mikkeli (in case there wouldn’t be a global pandemic). These events include the infamous KY Wappu, Möbba and Mursujaiset to name a couple. As PC you will also make sure everyone is familiar with the fire Probba drip and the inventories are up to date. If you have hype energy, creative vision for new Probba merch and badges and hopes up for next year’s events, Project Coordinator is the position for you.

Johann Young Editor-In-Chief

As Editor-In-Cheif you will be in charge of our school’s magazine, the Bulletin. Like any form of publication, the best part of the job comes with the finished product and the reactions from people on said product. It is your job to keep not only the Mikkeli community but Aalto and other schools informed of everything happening at our school, be it academic or even a bit of fun. The job can be demanding but with five issues a year you have plenty of space in between to get everything you need for each issue.

You’ll be working closely with the Communications Cordinator and Corporate Relations Representative as well.

If you think you are up for the job I will say that what you need is an eye for design. While creating the content needs its own creativity, formatting the magazine itself is what is most important in the production process. At the same time good, time management is also important. If you think you got a flair for creativity and enjoy the idea of highlighting what makes our community great then feel free to apply!

Julita Koski

Nesu-President The president is not only the moral support of NESU within Mikkeli, but also the face of the organization to other cities. He/ She works to bring together everyone in their own community and the other NESU cities nationwide. The presidents job is an never ending combat with innovating our own procedures, promoting the infamous Mikkeli-Spirit and upholding the highest of standards.

From a NESU-Probba President I expect a strong capacity to lead, a profound drive and the vision to guide everyone through even the darkest of times. The President will keep a strong grip of their board but also allow everyone to aspire for greatness and tap their creative potential. And when times are tough, they are the beacon of light and vision that guides everyone else through the storm. A NESU-Probba president is, above everything, a motivated person willing to better their community.

Sits-culture won’t lose its meaning any time soon, so I want to encourage YOU reading this, to consider taking the mantle of a President to uphold that most sacred tradition.

It is your generation that will keep the torch lit, when we are gone. It is your duty to pick up where we left on and pursue for bigger goals and aspire for higher standards than we ever could.

Toivo Volk

Nesu-Vice President Hi! I am Toivo and NESU-Probba’s Vice President. My main task as Vice President is to take care of things that none of the other positions are assigned to, in order to enable them to focus on their own tasks. Furthermore, I take on our president’s responsibilities when she is not available and make sure she stays hydrated. I also do secretary work during our official NESU meetings. During our sits I do the same as everyone else and take part in the planning process, help setting up the venue and clean afterwards (if possible). Sadly, due to the circumstances, we were not able to host too many sits this year, but nevertheless my time as a part of NESU has been a blast and I can only encourage everyone to apply! You won’t regret it.

Laura Valtanen

Communications Coordinator As the name suggests, I am responsible for all kinds of different communication tasks, both communicating with the Probba students, as well as other NESU organizations. The CC is known to be the person spamming your email with sits invites from all over Finland.

As well as being the main source of sits information to our Probba body, I communicate with other CCs from different business schools, as well as the CC of NESU Finland. This post also has a creative side, as I am responsible for creating the Facebook events and designing the beautiful banners for them. Lastly, I am responsible for NESUProbba’s social medias, updating our Instagram for our beloved followers. This post does require social and communication skills, as a large part of the job is passing on information and being the person people come to for questions and signups/cancellations. My successor has to be able to work under pressure and keep their calm (for example when they realize one of their sits signup forms isn’t working and is being spammed by panicked students trying to make the signup). Lastly, a welcoming and friendly face never hurts, and it is good if the CC is someone approachable!

Henrikki Onnela Toastmaster

The Toastmaster’s function in the NESU-Probba board is to be the ‘Creative Director’ mainly in charge of the entertainment at the Sits and maintaining the flow of the events. They are also in charge of creating and acquiring the overall-badges and the song leaflets used at the sits.

A Toastmaster is a lively, creative and innovative person with a desire to entertain and with a strong presence to control the drunk masses when need be. He/She is the conductor during the Sits, sitting in the front with their chosen Co-Toasts. That duo/ trio start the segments with a short comedy sketch, spark up the crowd if the mood is too low, call the performances (Proggis), enforce time limits and wrap up the show when the Sits are over.

Sits or Academic Dinner Parties are a three segment event with anywhere between 50-1000 participants. Each segment takes about an hour with a 15 minute break. During the 45 minutes there usually is an opening sketch by the Toasts, traditional songs and Proggis’s by the clubs or by visiting students(Ulkkarit).

The ethos of these events is to bring together students nationwide and to promote networking and solidarity amongst the Overallpeople. Everyone is encouraged to chat up strangers and get to know new people. To this end, the participants are placed to designated seats in random order. It is customary for the Toastmaster also to invite at least one Ulkkari to sit with them at the Toasttable.

Eero Saarinen Treasurer

Hello freshmen and especially all of you NESU-hopefuls!

I understand that NESU and sits may still be more or less foreign to you and I can’t even imagine how confused you must be about the financing and accounting of these complicated operations without having taken even an introductory course in either topic yet. If the treasurer position in NESU-Probba is something you are interested in, don’t let your lack of expertise scare you (even though it is spooky season). In reality, the sits tasks of a NESU treasurer are quite simple There are a few things that the need to be done once a year, such as closing the books and making the budget for the following year. Having experience of how to do these things can be very useful in the future. In addition to gaining valuable knowledge, I have made life-long friends and memories during my year on the NESU-Probba board and I would highly recommend applying for the next board to anyone who thinks they may have even just a little bit if NESU-spirit in them.

Jonne Pouhakka

Corporate Relations Representative I’m Jonne and I’m the corporate relations representative, or CRR for short, of Nesu. My post mainly includes working with different companies to host the best sits for you guys. My main tasks are getting sponsors for the sits and organizing afterparties in cooperation with the local bars.

My duties are done mainly before the sits, for example I setup the afterparty locations 1-2 months prior to the actual sits. Being the CRR means that you have to be resilient and convincing as marketing Nesu for new partners isn’t always as easy as you’d think.

90% of CRR duties are handled via email or over the phone which means that direct and strong communication skills are excellent qualities to have for this post. Sadly, as almost all of our cooperation partners are Finnish knowing the language is a must, without Finnish language skills the overall flow of information will be problematic.

Don’t be discouraged even if you don’t have any experience in this field as all you’ll really need is a positive attitude and an open-mind!

Emilia Sundqvist

Project Coordinator The project coordinator in NESU is responsible for the food, drinks and decorations. The project coordinator makes the shopping lists for sits and makes sure NESU has everything that is needed in order to organize the sits. The most important task of the project coordinator during the sits is to make sure the food is distributed according to dietary restrictions. The perfect project coordinator is someone who likes planning and decorating events beforehand.

Important traits as the project coordinator are creativity, good time management skills, and attention to detail.

Otto Lähdesmäki Event Coordinator

The post of the Event Coordinator is quite simple, as the main tasks are to reserve the venue and make the seating placements. Those tasks are not too complicated, but there are still many things to remember when organizing sits, and here I have provided a short description of what the post includes.

Before the sits day, I reserve the venue. This is done right after we have decided on what day we want to have the sits, usually a month or two before the actual sits day. The seating placements are also done usually a couple of days before the sits, and that requires some thought since it is important that everyone has an enjoyable place in order to have a good time at the sits.

On the day of the sits, my job includes checking that the tables are in the correct places, and that the seating placements are done correctly, as well as making sure that everything is in order at the venue. As it is the Event Coordinator that reserves the venue, it is under my responsibility to make sure that the venue is properly cleaned, and everything is where it should be after the sits are over.

The next Event Coordinator should be proactive and have good time management skills. The job is fairly simple, and doesn’t require any particular skills, only some good old NESU-spirit.

ith the new batch of students comes new class representatives who are in charge of making sure there is clear communication with each professor. Though classes are online that does no change the importance of their roles. If anything they’re even more important! The Bulletin has given them the space to let each know exactly what they wish to do in their role.

Meet your class reps

Bianca Numminen Hello everyone! I am Bianca, one of your newest class reps! Having been nominated to be in this exceptional position, I hope I will not disappoint. I will do everything in my power to make sure everyone is content when it comes to their classes. That is, you can come to me with any problems you may be having and I will try my very best to help solve them. I aspire to make sure online schooling goes as smoothly as possible for all and will be in contact with the professors about adjusting their classes to our wants and needs. During these times, I feel that giving feedback to the professors is vital to meeting our needs for success in our education. Additionally, I feel that it is vital to have communications and interactions with one another in online classes, and I hope that through closer contact with the professors this will happen. Feel free to contact me with any concerns you may have.

Joner Nikolla Greetings from Albania! I am Joner and I am the class rep for Group 1 of Babas 2020. My group is made of many nationalities and my main duty is to make sure everyone understands everyone in terms of culture and traditions.

In addition, creating a bond between us as a class is something I would really want to do and I would have to work a lot of things out to do that in an online environment.

Secondly, I try to be a sufficient bridge of communication between my classmates and the professor. Being a strong voice regarding issues which concerns our faculty and the students specifically is also a feature I would like to show as a class rep. I have enjoyed this a lot until now and I hope I can become even better at fulfilling such responsibilities.

Meet your class reps

Johan Salim As a class representative, I aim to ensure that students are comfortable with the class environment and that everyone feels safe and welcome in their own skin. I believe that a comfortable and safe environment is vital for effective learning and I want to make sure that I can offer that to all of you especially during tough courses. I also aim to bridge communication gaps between students and professors especially over issues such as learning styles and teaching methods. Given the unfortunate circumstances of distance-learning, my work nonetheless strives to provide all students with the top-grade education that we all deserve.

Jenni Ikonen Hi, I’m Jenni. I’m 19 years old and originally from Vantaa. What interested me in running for student representative is the fact that you get to have your voice heard in making the lectures and the school a better place. Especially with online lectures, being a student representative it’s important to me to voice any issues that other students are having to the professors and school faculty.

So far the job has been nice. We have talked with our professors and also had scheduled SQC meetings. I think that the role has been especially important now with online classes, as it’s still quite a new thing for most of us. It’s good that there is someone for the professors to ask for feedback from and it’s also good that the professors are listening to our suggestions and adapting the courses the best they can.

Juhana Aaltio With the start of our university has come a plethora of challenges to us, new students. Many are moving to a new city and are assumed to adjust to the new environment, lifestyle, and people in a rapid fashion to keep up with schoolwork.

On top of this, the ongoing pandemic brings its own share of daily challenges to all of us.

As a class representative, it is my job to have everyone heard and included. Online schoolwork and safety measures weaken our communication and lessen the time we spend together, but it cannot be a reason for the Mikkeli spirit to wither. I will be giving my part for creating the welcoming sense of community to make this not the year of covid-19, but the year of belonging.

Wishes of the Fuksi

Fuksi Wishes With only being able to see a small glimpse of what our community can truly offer before having to return to lockdown, the Fuksis have a lot of things they have heard about, but havent been able to experience. Here are the wishes of some of those Fuksis giving us a look into their Mikkeli spirit, be it academic or social.

Once a chill hits the air we know that winter is on its way and the only thing scarier than the shorter days is the thrill of October Spooktober! In the spirit of all hallows eve here is a recipie to spice up your diet and a reviewof Netflix’s highly anitisipated sequel to Haunting of Hill House, the Haunting of Bly Manor.

Creamy Pumpkin pasta with Walnuts and Spinach

Ingredients - 250g shells or bowtie pasta - 1 tbsp Extra Virgin Olive Oil - 2 cloves fresh garlic, minced - 280ml pure pumpkin puree (Boil pumpkin and smash) - 2 tbsp tomato paste - 2 tbsp half and half (Exclude for a vegan recipe.)

- ~280ml vegetable broth - pinch ground nutmeg - Cracked black pepper and salt to taste - 2 handfuls baby spinach, heaping - 30g chopped toasted walnuts - Parmesan cheese (Optional; Use crushed walnuts for a vegan recipe.)

Instructions 1. Cook the pasta

according to package instructions. Drain and set aside but keep it warm.

2. While the pasta cooks, bring a large skillet to medium heat and add the olive oil and minced garlic. Cook just until fragrant. Whisk in the tomato paste, pumpkin, and half and half. Add the vegetable broth. Stir and let cook on low about 5 minutes.

3. Add the spinach. Cook until it lightly wilts.

4. Stir in pasta and toss to coat. Sprinkle with walnuts and Parmesan, if desired and serve.

Review: The Haunting of Bly Manor After the success of its inaugural season, The Haunting of Hill House, it was quickly announced that a follow up would be made, making an anthology series similar to that of American Horror Story. I loved the Crain family’s fantastic story from season one and could not wait to see what writer-director Mike Flanagan would do for the next installment of the series.

Now, this does not mean the performances were weak in any way. Victoria Pedretti and Oliver Jackson-Cohen maintained strong performances just as they did in the first season.

Newcomers Rahul Kohli and T’Nia Miller blew out of the park with one episode, which I’m sure you’ll know once you watch it. My central issue performance-wise would be that of the child actors who are sadly a large part of the show.

The show follows Danielle (Victoria Pedretti) as she becomes a live-in nanny for two children in the county of Bly in England. Even though I did not feel as attached to the Haunted by her past, she quickly realizes characters as I was in the first installment, I that something is not right about the estate. did enjoy the show as I wanted to uncover the mystery of what was going on in the manor.

If you also liked the first season as much as There are still hidden ghosts throughout the I did, then you’ll be happy to hear that it is season, so make sure to keep an eye out as you more of the same with The Haunting of Bly watch. I look forward to seeing what they do next Manor. Mike Flanagan is excellent at creating and that hopefully, with the next installment, it character dramas within a horror setting; will have a more close knit relationship between however, I will say that this installment was all the characters like with the Crain family in a bit lackluster when making you genuinely season one. care for each character. I would find myself intrigued by what was happening and the mystery of the manor itself, but I did not grow attached to any specific characters. I sympathized with whatever events accord but could not for the life of me feel the same dread as I did with the Crain family in season one.
