Editor’s note

I

’m going to be completely straight forward with all those reading. Qaurantine was something that I felt as though an introvert such as myself would thrive through. However, after about a week I realized that wasn’t the case. The standard stay at home and play video games route was not as effective as I remembered, but I realized this was a moment to do things I thought I never had time for.

I feel as though comedian Joey Diaz put it best when asked about why Covid-19 came when it did and it was that we go too gready and god is punishing us. Even though I’m not a religious person, I agree with his remark. If anyhting this is a time where all of us can reflect on the past few years and see what we want to improve, be it some thing small or large this is the oppurtunity to do it.

Since I now had all the time in the world, aside from classes obviously, I could finally read ”Astrophysics for People in a Hurry” by Neil deGrasse Tyson.

Do I like astrophysics? Not really but I figured it would be a fun read. I now have even managed to learn how to play guitar in some way or another. Passing the time is something I never really had put effort into as I would genrally have most of the day planned out, however as I am sure anyone thats reading this has experience recently, it is not a simpel task.

Many people have been affected by this crisis and my support goes out to anyone affected. Personally, I have been scared to even leave Mikkeli to see any relatives as many are in the groups that are more suseptiable to worse cases. Luckily as of writng this everything seems to slowly be getting back to normal and hopefully in time all of us will be able to enjoy the nice summer weather. 2020 has been a rollercoaster of a year so far and hopefully the ride will begin to slow down a little.

Growing through talents and skills has been something I kind of enjoyed within this time. I had taken up running, started a gym routine, started a diet, and simply just left my apartment even for just a small amount of time. If you had told me at 14 that at some point I’d rather be out of the house doing something instead of sitting in front of a screen I would have laughed. Luckily I have been able to take this time to grow and simplly just reflect on past behaviors and adapt in a new way.

President’s Two Cents

’Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can.’

T

his has been an interesting, and needless to say, difficult time, for all of us. Our lives changed in a matter of weeks, and I think it’s safe to say that none of us were expecting our spring to turn out the way it did. I still remember the day when events set in motion months ago finally started to affect our campus, and more specifically, my positivity. my excitement for MRT quickly turned into the opposite when we made the hard decision to cancel it – the day before we had scheduled it to happen. Things were changing by the hour, leaving myself and the rest of the board with difficult decisions to make. Before I could even think of what quarantine would be like, everywhere around us, the world was at a standstill.

While my life, along with all of yours took a drastic turn, there have been many positives that have kept me going.

Nobody wanted to be in this situation, and even now I’m trying to make the best of it. Most of all, I’m trying to keep up the positive vibes of Board 20’ (along with all my other lovely board members of course).

Starting where I was in this scenario was probably the biggest challenge for me. With all the uncertainty, mass cancellations, and slight hysteria in the air, finding a way to deal with it all was not easy. I realized during this time that keeping up contact with friends and family proved to be the most important activity of my quarantine, and once I was able to realize this, I was able to actually start enjoying my quarantine days.

This brings me to my next step, using what I have. Whether it was through Skype, Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Discord, or in rare cases real life, I knew that keeping myself occupied with others and engaging in anything I could was the key. I ended up getting used to quarantine pretty fast, and soon it became second nature to me. Now, I’m doing what I can. This means adapting to any new challenge that this pandemic throws at me, keeping morale high wherever I go, and making sure that I never find myself in a restless state.

What once was an unfamiliar town in the middle of the forest has now truly become my home, and I wouldn’t be saying that if I hadn’t been stuck here for the past few months. So hey, I guess there’s always going to be a silver lining, no matter what the world wants to throw at us. I’m quite positive that the BaBa spirit has been strong throughout this time for all of us, so I know that I’m definitely not the only one who found something to be happy about.

Lock Down Madness

Probba Board 2020 Spring took an unprecedented turn and drastically changed our situation, along with all of yours, for the worse. Although we had to cancel many of our events, the situation keeps looking brighter with COVID-19 regulations lowering, giving us the motivation and excitement for the possibility of still having everything we had to originally cancel at a later time!

While our board has been in a tough situation ever since the start of the pandemic, we can see that there is indeed light at the end of the tunnel. We’re going to come back stronger than ever, and each and every one of us is prepared to bring all of you a memorable end to the year!

NESU-Probba 2020 Hi everyone! We in NESU-Probba have been following the development of the Corona situation hoping that it would get better and now it seems that organizing events will soon be possible. Our board has had a chance to organize sits only once so we are looking forward to finally getting back into action. Because the beginning of the year was far from what we planned, NESU-Probba will make sure that you will have twice as much fun for the rest of the year. So make sure you have your songbooks and overalls ready because soon we will be singing Jallutähden Alla again.

Lockdown Madness

Pentti Crew The Crew has been patiently waiting, as we are sure you have been as well, for the day that we may return to the faithful hallway of our basement. The faithful lounge of Probba. The faithful dance floor of Pentti. Where the music is always bangers and the company is friendly. Where all Babas enjoy the sweet stress releif offered by the highly trained crew. As we are sure you’ve noticed we have kept our spirit alive in these trying times and hope to see our home open real soon. Until then we wish for everyone to keep their spirit high and dance moves fresh as when we open we hope to see every willing member of our community come to the only place to be on Wednesdays.

FC Probba

This year, FC Probba has faced a lot of uncertainty and changes regarding their season. Luckily, we were able to put a very talented team together and compete in the anticipated ”Rautaliiga”, despite the current global situation. This season, the team is dedicated and yearning for success to carry on FC Probba’s highly-praised reputation.

We are counting on our fans in Mikkeli to support us during this time, and hopefully, we can make them proud. Our main goal is to enjoy this summer playing football together, as well as bring home a few victories. All the selected players are looking forward to representing this great team and to showcase our school’s talent and spirit!

Lockdown Madness

Boardgames ’n’ Babas Boardgames have always been a social occasion, and during this global pandemic, these social events have become even more important. Alongside the present, however, B&B must also look into the future. After this period of self-isolation, our sights are set on organizing an event as part of the upcoming O-week, and other smaller occasions for our students, both old and new to enjoy the wide world of board games.

MC Freeriders I have a dream, that one day me and my brethren wont be bound by this quarantine, but judged by the quality of our Bööli. One day we will brake these shackles and let the Perkele guide us. On that day the Poika will pass on from Baba to Baba in Pentti and the raiderirasti in MRT will have men shaking from fear. As the designated party Babas, we will make sure that every single one here will have a chance to take back the time we lost.

We have more or less flipped our minds during quarantine so it would be nice to get to flip some cups as well for a chance, right? Well, we Böönas have a perfect solution for you all. Imagine this, warm summer afternoon, Pankkis full of Babas and more bööli than you have seen since MBP. That’s right it is almost time for the annual Bööna flip the cup tournament. So, stretch those fingers and prepare to flip for your way for the title of the flip the cup champion. See you all there!

During quarantine many have found themselves wondering what they can do to pass the time. I have even had moments where I thought that there was absolutetly nothing left and that I would just have to sit in the quiet of my MOAS apartment. Now after over two months I can say that I have the ultimate survival guide in the case of another lockdown.

Saima Brewery Tasting

Saima Brewery is celebrating 25 years of creating various beers and ciders for peoples enjoyment. Now that the weather is warming up and summer is finally here, the Bulletin has tasted a few of their drinks to help you figure out the best way to beat the heat.

The Ciders

During our tasting we samples two of the ciders produced by Saima, these being their Apple Rosé and their Mesimarja cider (pictured on the left).

Both ciders stood out as a break away from the more traditional ciders you’d find in your local supermarkets. The biggest standout for us had to of been the Mesimarja cider as it offered a new variable with its sweet kick at the start of every.

Same could be said for the Apple Rosé as it switched up the more traditional Apple cider with the addition of a rosé after taste. If you’re a fan of ciders then these are a welcomed change for sure.

The Craft Beers

We tasted three of Saima’s IPAs. THese three was their California IPA (pictured on the right), Yakima Valley Double Hopped APA, and Alabama Red IPA. Two of us in the tasting do not normally care for IPAs, though we were surprised with the taste of these craft beers. Out of the three we could all agree we prefered was the California IPA as it had a more fruity taste compared to the others we had. Though that shouldn’t take away from the other two craft beers. Each craft beer had a specific taste they were going for and while the Clalifornia IPA was the stand out from the ones we had the others were not something we would turn down if the Bulletin 2/20 13

Since restaurants were closed for a long time, many people had to resort to cooking for themselves. Here are two recipies that your fellow Baba’s felt would help keep your stomachs satisfied in case of another lcokdown.

Disclaimer: Presentation does not affect taste

Banana Bread Difficulty: easy Taste: delicious Time: 50 min Ingredients: 3 ripe bananas, 75ml vegetable oil, 100g Brown Sugar, 225g plain flour, 3 heaped tsp baking powder, 3 tsp cinnamon Optional: 50g of dried fruit, nuts or choco chips Steps: 1. Heat oven to 180’C (fan)/ or 200’C (normal) 2. Mash the bananas with fork then add oil and sugar 3. After mixing add flour, baking powder, cinnamon and combine well 4. Add nuts/ choco chips if using. Bake in an oiled loaf tin for 20 min 5. Then cover with foil and bake for another 20 min or until skewer comes out as clean.

6. Let cool before slicing 7. enjoy

Recipies to pass the time

Ram-Don Difficulty: medium Taste: spicy Time: 60 min Ingredients: 1 pack fo instant noodles (preferably beef flavoring), Steak, and pork Marinade: 75ml Teriyaki, 50ml Soy sauce, 100ml Olive Oil, 30ml Balsamic vineager, 10ml Honey, 3 squirts of Habenero hot sauce, 2 pinches of salt and pepper Marinade steps: 1. Add all ingrediants into a blender 2. Blend till all are properly mixed 3. Cut steak and pork into smaller pieces 4.Put pieces into a container and pour marinade until covered 5. let sit for at least twenty minutes, however the longer the better Steps: 1. Boil water for noodles 2. Once boiling add noodles and flavoring 3. Cook the marinaded steak and pork on pan (High-medium heat) cover with lid to keep moisture 5. Once noodles are ready pour out broth except for one cup 6. Add the cooked steak and pork to the noodles 7. Stir meat and noodles unitl mixed evenly 8. Oh boy do I miss you all. You’re some of the most wonderful people I’ve met in my life thus far. A year ago, on O-week I set myself the goal of getting to know everyones name. I could tell from those first meetings that I was in the right place. Everyone seemed so kind, fun and intelligent. Now, after knowing you for almost a year, I know that my first impressions were right.

Here I have made friends that I know that I will keep for a lifetime, people I know I wouldn’t have had the chance to meet otherwise. I used to wish I could go travelling on a gap year to see the world. But here I have discovered that although I do not get to see the world, I gain authentic experiences through eating food that has been lovingly prepared by my classmates. I hear stories from people from all over the world about things I wouldn’t be able to experience in 1000 lifetimes and I get to experience in depth the secrets of countries I would have never have thought to travel to.

rantine has been hard on all of us, some people are struggling more than others but I just wanted to say how proud I am of how well everyone has been coping. I know that on some days just getting out of bed can feel like an accomplishment.

Wishes of the students With there having been so much time away from campus many students have been scattered around not only the country but around the world. Many have not had a chance to visit our great city of Mikkeli in a long time. Here are wishes from many of these students about their hopes for the rest of the year. Some wishes may be more practical than others.

I wish that we are able to return back to the pre-Covid student life in mikkeli as soon as possible. I am really looking forward to having Sits and other amazing student events again - Eero Eronen I wish that Pentti finally re-opens soon and that it can remain open on every Wednesday for the rest of this year.

Sat, April 18: Graduation It is time to say goodbye to our beloved third year students and there is no better way for doing this than celebrating with them. Also, make sure to attend the legendary Graduation-Pentti on the same day.

Fri, May 1: Vappu <3 <3 <3 This unique holiday is the place to be for every student in Finland, celebrating the end of winter and filling the streets of Helsinki with colorful overalls. You don’t want to miss this!

Probba Netflix recommendations

Many of us have had a lot of free time in the past six months and nothing is better to kill time then a good show. Probba has had a lot of free time as well so here are some shows that we recommend if you have time to kill or simply need something new to watch.

The Midnight Gospel

I am an avid listener to podcasts in my free time, as they can be fun to listen to while you complete various activities. Adventure Time creator Pendleton Ward must agree with me as he recently teamed up with comedian Duncan Trussell to create The Midnight Gospel. The show takes audio from Duncans Podcast ”Duncan Trussell’s Family hour” and turns it into a fun existential journey.

The show follows Clancy Gilroy, a spacecaster that enters different simulated worlds to find new and exciting guests. His adventures find him in various visually entertaining worlds, talking to equally exciting guests.

Each episode follows a different theme, and I can safely say each is more surprising than the last. You can see that there was a lot of care put into each and every frame of the show.

While visually, it can also be bizarre at times, the conversations about self and spirituality allow for anyone watching to have some new understanding of life.

While designed for listeners of Duncan’s podcast, the show is something I would recommend for fans of animated series and podcasts with a comedic twist. While some of the topics discussed can get complicated, Duncan Trussell’s unique sense of humor makes them simplier, as he even said in one of the episodes, ”I’m an idiot, so help me understand.”

Dark

Dark is the first german series to be published by netflix, and is abundant with deep character development, twists when you’d least expect them, and a compelling story that keeps you wanting more.

I started the series without any prior knowledge of the plot, and was slightly disappointed to see a very Stranger Things-like opening. However, don’t be fooled by the initial similarities the two have, which is that a young boy in a rural town goes missing, because that is where the similarities end.

The series has also been praised for how true it stays to scientific theories, albeit how ‘supernatural’ it may seem. Even while juggling ideas that seem unreal to most, the series does so in a surprisingly realistic way.

Dark focuses on one character in particular, a high school student named Jonas. When his friend’s younger brother seemingly disappears into thin air, he begins to look for answers, as does everyone else. What he discovers is a whole new world, that goes beyond our understanding of time and space.

The series is great at keeping you at the edge of your seat, and will constantly tease you by slowly setting up the grand finale, all the way from the start. In my own words, it’s almost as if nothing makes sense...until it all

does. Luckily for the rest of you, all three seasons are out, so there’s nothing stopping you from watching the entire series from start to finish!

As a disclaimer, Dark is a series that needs 110% of your focus. With countless characters (and their different versions) that are introduced left and right, it may become overwhelming to those who are easily sidetracked. But, for those of you willing to put your energy into it, you’re in for a wild ride, and one that you’ll most definitely enjoy.

Dark is an amazing series for those who are willing to watch it through, so even if the beginning might seem slow, don’t give up! You won’t be disappointed!
