YOUR EIC FAITHFULLY

Dear our Babas, I’m writing those lines while being fully aware that I, as well as the Probba Board 2023, are soon gonna retire. While I can’t be more excited to know who will be the Probba Board 2024, I also am experiencing some bittersweet-ness as our duty is approaching to an inevitable end. To the next board, whom I have yet to know, the only thing I can say is: the current board has and is still doing as much as we can to welcome you!

A new semester has been kickstarted with a more vibrant and international atmosphere than ever. I must say, first-year Babas have successfully impressed your EIC by your eager participation in all kinds of events (and your tolerance in trying the Fleimari:).

The academic atmosphere is also worthnoting as I have noticed competitiveness, passion for learning, and some late-night lamps-on at the campus (but remember to take care of your health!). There are quite many talents in music, filling the campus with the strumming of guitar - Emil and Otava will be glad. Close friendships have been made among you first-years, which are very likely to develop into something lifelong. Observing all the changes and breezes blowing in this campus, I can’t feel more warm-hearted!

To the second-years, just like Otava, I am honoured to have been with you for more than a year now. I share the same heartattack with you when the word “THESIS” rings in my ears and bothers me mid-night.

(And I know there will be procrastinations until the deadlines hit my head against the wall.) Well, que sera, sera! Whatever will be, will be. Things will turn out to be fine, probably even finer than we expect. Sooner than we will realize, we will say a temporary goodbye to each other and disperse all round the world for the exchange, bringing the Mikkeli spirit to international fellows.

Autumn is lovely but only a momentum.

Daylight is being shorter, as a Vietnamese proverb once said, “In October days, darkness comes before we have yet to smile”. Snow will fall and you will lose the motivation to wake up for morning classes.

Worry not; the upcoming events will be sure to beat the blues away!

Dear Babas,

By the time this magazine is published, the freshmen period is already far behind you. I have been pleased to notice how active and interested you are in the different activities, you truly have potential! And say less, you will have a lot of exciting events coming up this autumn: you will be able to experience the glamorous festivities of the Grand Annual Ball, the chaos known as Probba Sillis, and the best “skiing” trip that you will ever experience – Ganos, organized by the one and only Skibba.

the honor of working and growing with you for over a year now, and I know that no challenge we can’t overcome. Besides thesis, we have the tough decision of where to apply for an exchange period. In just a year from now, some of us will be exploring the rainforests of Peru, some getting to know the culture of the Netherlands, and others surfing in Australia. Exciting, isn’t it?

Interesting times lay ahead of us all. The next months will mark the elections of the Probba Board 2024 and application periods to the other club boards that will continue the legacy and keep the Mikkeli Spirit alive.

I also feel proud to see all fuksis wearing dollar green overalls that distinguish you as proud students of the Aalto University School of Business. Let’s make this autumn the best of our life!

The famous Probba orientation, better known as the O-week is now over, and the life in Mikkeli is rolling as before. This intense week has been the key to forming the close community of Babas for decades. I believe each and every one of you enjoyed the long week that introduced you to all of our traditions, Pentti, and the best sits that you can find from the whole world. The week was the grand final of all the hard work of the entire community including boards, clubs, and tutors. I personally want to express my deep gratitude to every person who made the experience possible; you’re doing the most important work!

With an evening gown: The dress code is a full-length evening gown which should cover your ankles. In case your dress does not cover your shoulders, you should use accessories to cover them until dessert. Traditionally your hair should be above your shoulders.

With a tailcoat: Traditionally a tailcoat or dark suit. They should not be replaced by a tuxedo or a morning dress. Traditionally the tailcoat includes a black tailcoat, a silk ribbon, a white tie, trousers, a white tailcoat shirt, a white tailcoat vest, dark sock, black footwear, gold cufflinks, and pearl brooches. The handkerchief should be white and placed so that only a narrow streak of approximately one centimeter is on show.

In conclusion: White tie: you can rent these. (Stay tuned for deals!)

Dark suit: black or dark grey, no blues or browns.

Note that if your hair is long enough to be tied up, it should be.

In annual balls, ribbons are used to represent your student organization’s colors. Probba and KY ribbons will be sold on GAB week Monday in the opening ceremony.

Colors and order: Probba ry: Green/Silver KY: Green/Orange AYY: Purple/Silver With evening gown: On the right side of your bodice, green side down.

With a tailcoat: Over your right shoulder and under your vest, green side down.

Note: These are general guidelines, no need to stress about them too much. Eg. having a slit on your dress or having your hair in a half updo is just fine.

The CR Crew members have been working effectively months before GAB. It’s an opportunity for us to work with Anton, because he himself is a very self-inititative person. Under the lead of Anton, we have been in charge of contacting businesses, finding partners, making sponsorship deals, managing external relations, inviting guest speakers,... All of our contributions are more or less related to Probba’s activities, especially GAB. Our motto of working is “Open your eyes around and look for opportunities!”

Susanna Kauppinen Our guest writer this time is the

chairman of Kansainväliset Ekonomit (International Business Graduates) Susanna Kauppinen. Her career story is indeed among the most inspiring!

My first degree was in Financial Management, and I worked some years in HR and payroll services. However, I was young and wanted to see more and experience more. I decided to study more and moved to Jyväskylä. I changed my major to Management and Leadership and minors to Marketing, Intercultural Communication, and International Business.

My first international experience was Erasmus student exchange in Germany during my first degree. That was the best time of my life so far, and that was one reason to study more and get more international experiences.

Helsingin Ekonomit The third international experience was studying one year in Germany during my Masters. There I focused on International Marketing, and on summer break I travelled through Europe and visited as many countries as possible.

thought that was once in a lifetime opportunity and moved to Brussels. I worked in the Communications department and made many international friends. Belgium was the seventh country to live for me.

The fourth experience took me to India. I did an internship at the Embassy of Finland in New Delhi. My interest was in trade policy, and I could join EU delegation meetings and even write speech elements to our Foreign Minister. Great experiences!

After Belgium, I moved to Atlanta in the USA. I worked for a German-American company that helps international companies to American market by establishing subsidiaries and providing outsourcing services like accounting, HR, marketing, order processing and shared business premises in Atlanta. That was in 2020 and everyone knows what it means…

COVID time.

The fifth case was to work for a chamber of commerce in New York. I was excited to live in Manhattan! My focus was on Business Development and organizing B2B events in NYC. The sixth one was China. I moved straight from NYC to China to work at a Chinese office furniture company in International Marketing and HR. I helped in international recruitments and taught an English course as a staff training.

After China I moved back to Finland and finished my master’s thesis in Business and did also a teacher’s degree. I moved to Helsinki and started my work at a construction company SRV, in business premises department, leasing team. I did B2B sales coordination of business premises.

Suddenly, I got an extraordinary opportunity to move to Brussels and work for the European Parliament. I thought that was once in a lifetime opportunity and 18 | BULLETIN • OCTOBER 2023

All places were closed, and I was stuck working from home in a new country. I had finally time to think. I turned 30 and started to consider what to do with my life.

Hopping from country to country was kind of exhausting and hard for relationships. I decided that I want to move back to Finland!

Like magic, my previous supervisor from SRV contacted me and asked me back. I didn’t have to think twice to say: Yes! In autumn 2020, I moved back to Helsinki and continued my work with business

Helsingin Ekonomit premises. It has been three years now, and I’m happy to pronounce that I got married in August. My husband has also graduated from the University of Jyväskylä, and we met at the board of Pörssin Alumnit. Life is miraculous.

I have been happy to settle down in Finland. Work is good, marriage is good, and we just bought an apartment in Espoo.

International spirit doesn’t have to end if moving back to Finland. There are many ways to stay international, like travelling and joining international organizations. I have visited 50 countries so far.

Now I have been a chairman at Kansainväliset Ekonomit committee for two years in Helsingin Ekonomit. We organize for example company visits and networking events. We have committee meetings once a month where we plan the upcoming events. We also have student members, and the application period for the next year is open now. Besides Helsingin Ekonomit, I also belong to JCI Junior Chamber International. That is also a great international network with inspiring conferences and events. There are many organizations and ways to continue international spirit even if living in Finland.

My advice for students is to use the opportunities to go abroad during studies.

It is so easy, and there is a great support system from the university’s international services. It’s good to gain experiences when 19 | BULLETIN • OCTOBER 2023

I don’t miss France that much yet but as a French, I have to say I kinda miss good wine and cheese

Can you introduce yourself to us?

My name is Matthieu, I’m 22 and I come from France. My home university is Audencia Business School in Nantes, ranked 7th in France (among business schools)

Would you recommend your home university to our Aalto students?

I would absolutely recommend Audencia as a destination! Our campus is really cozy and the atmosphere is great

I’m really glad to be here even if it’s only for one semester! I heard a lot about the beauty of Finnish landscapes (and people of course!) so I wanted to see that with my own eyes

Nantes is a gorgeous city, very close to Brittany and not that far from Paris. There are lots of things to see, restaurants are great and the nightlife is also amazing! It’s an excellent choice for discovering French strikes and demonstrations

How have you been feeling about Mikkeli/Finland so far?

Well this argument is perhaps not the most convincing but I have to be honest

Exchange Stories Can you introduce yourself to us?

I am Teresa, 20 years old. I am from Hong Kong Lingnan University. I am studying Global Development and Sustainability instead of business in my home university.

International business are fields I would like to explore, so that’s why I am here!

Can you tell us more about Hong Kong and Lingan?

Speaking of Hong Kong, the first impression of people may have is small, and densely populated. But it’s a super diverse place! It has two of the world tallest skyscrapers, remarkable city view and thousands of shopping malls, but also little villages, monuments with cultural value, and even geoparks and country parks. For my university, it focuses on liberal arts and sustainability taught in small scale. In dormitory, we have a shared room with different activities, such as “Mahjong” (Chinese game) or “hall-bin” (which means hotpot in dormitories) with friends, especially in winter or beginning of semester!

Is Finland different from what you thought before coming here ?

It's more like a stereotype than expectation.

The stereotype ss that Finland is cold, snowy, Santa Claus, and auroras. But it turns out to have the best temperature in Summer, modern cities, Mikkeli with atmosphere of tranquility and serendipity.

How have you been feeling about Mikkeli so far?

What do you miss the most about Hong Kong when being in Finland?

To be honest, I was not adapted to Mikkeli as it is very differ from Hong Kong. Mikkeli is more slow paced town, with stores closes at 5pm. Nevertheless, I was soon attracted by the broad blueish-sky, the lovely forests, lakes surrounded us and of course, auroras !

It’s so refreshing and incredible to stay with nature. The student community here is

It’s true that I miss my friends and family, but the first answer came to my mind is definitely food! Despite some restaurants in Finland are really good, it’s more diverse in Hong Kong. Aside from Japanese, Korean, and Thai food, I miss the local food such as street food, Hong Kong style milk tea, and “cha siu” (barbecued pork).

Exchange Stories cooking with my friends! It made me feel like a kid again, as I used to go camping a long time ago. At the same time I learned the drinking culture there:) So this event means a lot to me in this way as well.

Will you miss Mikkeli/Finland when you go back to Japan?

I think so Because most of my friends who finished their exchange periods told me they missed Europe already. I miss Japan now but I already got used to this place and cold weather. I’ll definitely feel sad after I return to my home country.

Can you introduce yourself to us?

I’m Jun Hatsuse from Tokyo, Japan. My uni is Hitotsubashi University, which is located in a bit far from the center of Tokyo but the surrounding sceneries are incredibly beautiful so I highly recommend u to come :) I really like food in general so talking about the food, recently I have been crazy about Vietnamese foods cuz my roommate and friends are really good at cooking. I’m trying to learn something from them.

You have been in Mikkeli nearly as long as the 2nd year student. Looking back at the past 1 year, what do you cherish most about your Mikkeli time?

There are so many things fun but if I had to choose I would say Möbba. It was a real camping in an island like far from daily life but thanks to that, we enjoyed nature itself One of the most enjoyable moments is

Would you recommend Mikkeli to students in your home university as an exchange destination?

Absolutely, I would! The education system is quite different from ours, offering a unique and interesting experience. The smaller community here makes it easier to connect with more friends. While there might not be as many activities to do, it provides an opportunity to relax, whether by the lake, cooking with friends, or enjoying movie nights together.

Can you say something to us in your own language?

GRAPEFRUIT TAPIOCA PUDDING Photo: An

Ingredients (A) Mung beans, shell off

100g

(B) Grapefruit peels Water Salt

60g 250ml 1/2 tsp

(C) Water Brown sugar Tapioca starch Another tapioca starch

150ml 50g 50g 60g

(D) Water Palm sugar Tapioca starch

1l 250g 35g

(E) Coconut milk Sugar

100ml 35g

Served for dessert

Probba Cook Step 1: Prepare The Beans (A) -Soak the mung beans for 2 hours in warm water. Then steam the soaked beans in a double-boiler for 10-15 mins.

-Do not keep the heat too high, so that the beans are soft, not crushed.

Step 2: Prepare The Peels (B) -Completely remove the grapefruit skin.

Take off the white peels by knife, then cut them into small pieces.

-Boil 250ml water and add 1/2 tsp salt. Add all the grapefruit pieces into the boiled water, stir them quickly.

-Turn off the heat. Drain all the pieces.

Wash them under cold water, and use your hand to soften the bitterness out of the grapefruit peel pieces.

Step 3: Mix The Peels (C) -Mix 5og brown sugar and 50g tapioca starch together, and stir the mixture with 150ml water. Add the grapefruit peels, and continue to stir. Add another 60g tapioca starch and keep stirring carefully.

Step 4: Make The Sugar Syrup & Cook The Peels (D) -Prepare 1l water and add 250g palm sugar. Stir until all the sugar dissolves.

-When the syrup is boiled, add the grapefruit peels. Boil until the peels look 24 | BULLETIN • OCTOBER 2023

transparent. Do not boil for too long, otherwise the peels will lose their crunchiness.

Step 5: Complete The Pudding (E) -Mix some tapioca starch with water (the amount of tapioca starch depends on how dense you want the pudding to be). Stir the mixture, and gently pour it into the sugar syrup.

-Cook the syrup with low heat. While stirring the syrup, add the mung beans and grapefruit peels.

-You will realize the more you stir, the denser it gets. That’s the magical effect of tapioca starch:) -Finally, pour coconut milk and sugar into the pot. The pudding is now ready to serve!
