Editor’s note

F

uksi have begun to take over the positions previously held by us, second years, and I am happy to say that I have high hopes for them in their Mikkeli carreers. While saying this, and I know for the few that take the time to read my note this will be repetitive but, I hope you take a chance to view the other opportunities that are in this great community. I have grown to adore our little community and want it to prosper in the future as it did before corona. So, take a look at the clubs, and, if one interests you, pay attention to any announcements they make and take the chance and apply.

With the preachy part of my Editor’s note out of the way, I wanted to take this chance to reflect on my time here, in Mikkeli, as this is my final issue of the Bulletin. It has been one crazy year, and, if I would tell my pre-baba self everything I have experienced since joining Aalto, I’m sure I would not believe myself.

I’ve been able to grow personally and see my friends grow as well. It is safe to say that none of us are the same people that first stepped into the campus on the orientation week. I have managed to surpass my own expectations within the past year and I couldn’t be happier.

Though I did not run for the position of Editor-in-Chief as the rest of the board, I was more than happy to take the position when asked. The job has had its ups and downs, but it gave me a chance to be the voice of this community in my own way.

I was welcomed into the board who had already established themselves as a tight unit with the community’s best interests at heart, and I was happy to join them in their mission.

Mikkeli has honestly been the greatest decision I could have made in my life, and I am sad to see it slowly come to its end. I have made friends I will cherish for the rest of my life, even though I’m not the greatest in keeping the communication up.

The Mikkeli Spirit runs strongly through me, and I am happy to say so. I will continue to be active in the community that accepted me for the weird Finnish-American that I am, and I hope future generations will do the same for anyone like me.

This program is definetely as special as all previous Babas have told me ,and I will continue to spread their message.

President’s Two Cents

D

earest Babas,

Time really flies by, and I’m someone who doesn’t seem to realize that until it does. I feel like it was only a moment ago when Board 20’ was elected and we were ready to begin our year, and all of a sudden its a flash forward to the last time I’ll ever be writing my excerpt in our lovely bulletin. As anyone can say at this point, our year was full of obstacles, but it did also have its share of opportunities for all of us. With that said, I feel like I can truly say that we made the best out of the cards we were dealt.

It’s weird to think that my time as a Baba is slowly, but surely, coming to an end in the next few months. I remember at the beginning of my university career in Mikkeli, second years were telling me time and time again, to really soak in all the experiences that you can, because before you know it, they’ll be over. I never really listened to them, but, boy, they were right. If you’re reading this, make sure to keep that in mind, since I really wish I had during my time here.

With that being said, though, there always comes a time where the torch must be passed on, and that’s where all of you come in, Baba20s. Your enthusiasm and spirit, especially in a time like this, have been truly remarkable, and I have no doubt that you’ll be great role models to the students who enter our community next year.

Without getting too soapy here, I’ll end this by saying that it really was great while it lasted. Even during Covid times, there were always silver linings, which I’ll never stop appreciating.

With that, I leave the rest to you, Baba20s. Never let that spirit waver!

The New Boards

robba and Nesu-Probba have all gone through with their elections, so it is time for the other clubs to have the spotlight.

Mikkeli, much like its community, has a diverse array of various clubs that students can join. Though, as the pandemic carries on, they have not had their time to shine in order for new students to see if they wish to become members. Here is their chance to show what they’re all about and why you should possibly join.

MC Freeriders The men, the myths, the legends. The MCFreeriders are known throughout the realm as the true party animals of the Business field in Finland. They are recognised by their traditional and sacred RaideriBööli and the infamous Poika. Their mission - making sure every single student is partying their butt off and having a good time. Outside the parties they are the social everymen that go as hard on the dancefloor as they do in classroom.

Don’t let the name of this order fool you, however. The Freeriders are anything but. Our fine gentlemen can be found every year in the executive boards of number of other organizations in Mikkeli; Probba, Skibba, NESU and many more. They are always some of the most active members of their communities.

A largely unknown fact about this club is that it also includes one woman in their ranks each year. A honorary Raideri is chosen every MBP with the new Raiders and Böönas.

What is an MBP you may ask? Tune in this spring to find out...

Pentti Crew The Crew has been waiting in anticipation for the greenlight to open the doors of Pentti once again for our last hurrah. The heros of war that have gently walked through our doors in the past definitly feel the same way, and you, Fuksis, do not know what you have missed. That being said, we must shed our armor and pass it on to the next generation of Pentti crew. If you wish to be a member of this prestigious crew, the opportunity is soon upon you. Our sacred sanctuary is the heart of our community and a place for those who like to dance, play beerpong and have some R&R from studying, the Shangri-la of Mikkeli.

New year, same old clubs

Böönas Böönas are four sweet, social and flirty girls that you can’t miss at a party. The first ones shaking it on the dance floor and the last ones leaving the bar, the Böönas are always there to lift the atmosphere and spread that sweet sweet bööööööönalove. Böönas are the masters of Flip-theCup and, therefore, in charge of the annual Flip-the-Cup tournament. Also, events like Bööna party and MBP are organized by the fabulous four. The next flirtatious party ambassadors will be carefully selected by the former Böönas, so show off your dance skills and girly energy if you think you have what it takes. After all, nights are meant for dancing, not sleeping!

FC Probba FC Probba, the greatest football club on earth, gathers every summer to play in a local league to compete against other Mikkeli-based teams. Every year, we have men and women playing together, providing amazing skills and dedication. If you have experience with football and want to play for this great club, make sure to show your interest to the new captains once they have been picked. The new captainship decision is in the hands of the predecessors, and we are actively looking for those worthy of this great honor to lead the pack. We also can’t forget about our fans! Even if you aren’t playing, the fans are a huge part of creating the culture around the team, and their support throughout the season is essential.

Summers in Mikkeli truly wouldn’t be the same without FC Probba, so don’t miss out on an opportunity to be a part of Aalto Mikkeli’s history!

BEER CLUB

Baba Beer Club

BBC had a Christmas Tasting on the 1st of December in Dom. For those who were unfortunately unable to attend, I decided to write about why everyone should take part in these cool events and learn more about the fascinating world of Beers.

Tasting is an event when a host prepares 3 to 6 beers usually (more can be drank afterwards) and provides information on how the beer tastes, how it is made and maybe some other general (or oddly specific) information about the beer. In the Christmas tasting, we had 4 very different beers (lager, sour, imperial stout, barley wine) starting from lighter lager and progressing towards stronger beers like imperial stout and barley wine. In the duration of approximately 1,5 hours, we went through the 4 beers and got comfortably buzzed to continue the journey in the bar after.

In BBC, we encourage responsible alcohol behavior and learning to respect all kinds of beers, from the darkest imperial stouts to freshest lagers and fruitiest sours and everything in between. When you are tasting a beer you are never wrong - everyone has their own taste, and discovering new favorites is always a fun ride. There will be another tasting after the Christmas break, so stay tuned!

Skibba SkiBBA is the most electric and active club in Mikkeli.

We organise the most (best) events of all clubs with weekly sports all year round. On top of weekly sports we held different tournaments and the best event of the year, Ganos (postponed not cancelled, so get ready). We help all students to have a good time and burn a couple of calories at the same time. The SkiBBA board is always in positive spirits and ready to have a good time with a little competition on the side. If you have some of this legendary Skibba spirit be sure to apply for the next board to take your Mikkeli life to the next level.

BScBA Hook As business students and future leaders of the world, we must acknowledge the importance that golf can have with networking and creating connections in the business world. The Hook Board is here to give every Baba the possibility to learn the secrets of the beautiful game like golf through the annual green card course, where everyone can take their first steps into the world of golf. After teaching the secrets of golf, the Hook Board gathers the best golfers from our program to the magnificent Mikkeli Golf course for the annual BScBA Hook Open. There, after an extremely intense and fun competition, the winner is awarded the desired Green Jacket, that comes with eternal glory and a year full of bragging rights, in a similar fashion as seen in The Masters Tournament (the legend says that they copied us).

The BScBA Hook Open is also known as the most old-fashioned event of the year! The new board is selected among the most enthusiastic participants of the Hook Open, and the torch is passed on to the four most suitable future Tiger Woodses of the business world for the board. If you like golf, having fun and organizing the MOST fun and GOLFALICIOUS events of the year, the BScBA Hook is the one for you.

Babas & Board games Welcome to Board games & Babas! Soon, we shall be selecting our new board ’21 to represent us during the upcoming year! So, who are we, and why YOU should apply? Board games & Babas, or, more casually, BnB, organizes various board games-related events for all of the Babas. At our regular Board gaming nights, we have a large variety of different board games from quick and deceptively simple card games to complex, full-scale adventures.

Why should you apply to our wonderful board? The reasons are multiple. Firstly, You get to organize a wide variety of different events and checkpoints, including, but not limited to, Regular board game evenings, checkpoints in Runnin’ Baba and MRT, and many more..

Secondly, the games. With a wide variety of games available both physically in our collection and available online, there is an almost infinite amount of different games, and even more stories to engage yourself into. Finally, and most importantly, the FUN!!

SBC Tasting

Probba’s sponsor Saimaa Brewing Company was kind enough to give the Bulletin some drinks in order for us to do a tasting! We were given a lager, pils, cider and one of their new sodas. These reviews were compiled through the different opinions of fellow babas.

Pacific Lager

The Pacific Lager was the first drink that was tasted during our tasting, it was my personal favorite. The drink itself was a bit bitter, but it did not linger as much as with other Saimaa lagers I have tasted. Its hint of citrus and grape was a pleseant surpise and helped to counter the bitterness of the drink. Overall, the drink itself did not feel strong, and the low alcohol percentage definitely helped make this a go-to for those who like to sit and sip as they enjoy their drinks.

Bohemian Pils

The second drink of the night was the Bohemian Pils. Another good drink, though, personally prefered the Pacific Lager. Instead of the citrus and grape punch you get a balanced sweet one. The bitterness was around the same, but you definitely can taste the increase in alcohol percentage. I would still recommend this for those who like to sit and sip, though, be aware of the heavier hit the Bohemian Pils provides.

Pear Sweet

The third drink was the Pear Sweet cider. If you’ve had pear cider before then you know what to expect flavor-wise, but sweet is not just for name’s sake. This cider is definitely as sweet as they come, though, this is not necessarily a bad thing. I like the occasional cider, and I have had a few from Saimaa, and so far they have not disappointed.

If you like ciders, I would highly recommend.

Cola Citrus

Our fourth and final drink was one of their new sodas. Cola Citrus is exactly how it sounds - a cola with a nice hint of citrus to spice it up. Not much else has to be said about this drink. If you like cola and you want to mix things up a bit, I recommend grabbing a can.

I’d say, the funniest thing would be when one of our classmates lost a bet and had to shave their It’s hard to not see the giant Tomb Raider poster head while we had some people over. The rest is history. and decided to give it to the house, and it’s been on the wall since.

The house is and should continue to be a staple of our student community and we need people to move in to do so. I’ve had a blast living here and I want more generations to experience the same.

We’d say, 24/7 roasting and 24/7 support. We are always there for each other and can offer help with both personal matters and studies. And, chilling on a sunlit patio in the summer is also great.

We created the legacy! We are gifting the future generations a fusbal table, a big ass pink piggy bank, Tigger plushie of questionable origin, Twilight Saga and a 50 Shades Darker book.

Well, I love having roommates, but there are times when I question it...Like during O week when a bunch of BABA 18s was staying with us, and Miku came back with them at 5 am and started singing Karaoke in the living room, while I, other roommates, and other guests were trying to sleep. In hindsight, however, it is pretty hilarious.

7. Why should people move in?

It is a big, beautiful apartment that is always full of light. But, the best thing is that is right next to Vaakuna, Wilhelm AND Forttis - all the best places to be 20 seconds away from your doorstep.

Big place, cheap rent, and sauna, just a sick deal in general. Renter might want to sell it next year though, so keep an eye on it.

GAB Drink at Home

GAB Drinks at Home

With the Grand Annual Ball being canceled due to the dark times we are currently in, Probba invites you to try out two of last year’s GAB drinks. They are sure to be delicious and keep you warm while you enjoy the holiday break. Each of these drinks was made by Drinkmaster Niklas Juuranto.

Burnout

How to:

This shot is a great representation of our time here in Mikkeli together. Looks good, smells like vergi and once you try it out you realize how great it actually is!

Nothing like a good burnout to brighten your day.

Mix everything together in a mixing glass and pour to shot glasses. Decorate with a lime slice and a sugar cube dampened in 80% -Vergi. Light the sugar cube on fire and sprinkle some cinnamon for added effect. Blow out the flame and drop the cube into the shot before drinking.

Four shots: 4 cl of white rum 4 cl of cloudberry liqueur 8 cl of orange juice 1 spoonful of blue curacao liqueur lime drop of 80% -vergi cinnamon

BAG Drinks at Home Thursday Morning This refreshing drink is a perfect cure for that Thursday morning flu that quite often torments our school. While it may not have all the refreshing vitamins from the fruits and berries, it still makes you feel more refreshed and readier for the day. Like a morning fruit smoothie, only more in the spirit of Mikkeli.

How to: Put everything but sprite in a shaker and shake with ice until cold. Strain to a cooled glass and fill the glass with sprite while stirring the drink.

Decorate with a lime slice and frozen cranberries.

It’s finally December, which means it’s time for obligatory holiday greetings! The weather has gotten to the point where it is easier to stay inside and be warm, watching TV with the family. While you remain inside and hibernate, you might as well enjoy some holiday feasts to keep your stomachs full, so here are some recipes for you to enjoy.

Bacon Potato Bake

Ingredients - 8 potato’s thinly sliced -2 tablespoons of all-purpose flour -2 large eggs, lightly beaten -1 cup sour cream

-2 tablespoons butter, melted -1 teaspoon salt -1 cup of cheese (Your choice) -1/4 cup of dry bread crumbs -8 bacon strips, cooked and crumbled

Instructions 1. Place potatoes in a Dutch oven; cover with water. Bring to boil. Drain and let cool for 10 minutes.

2. In a small bowl, combine the flour, eggs, sour cream, 1 tablespoon butter and salt. Spoon over potatoes and toss to coat. Place half of the potato mixture in a greased 13x9-in. baking dish; top with half of the cheese. Repeat layers.

3. Toss bread crumbs with remaining butter; sprinkle over the top. Bake, uncovered, at 350° for 1 hour or until a thermometer reads 160° and potatoes are tender. Sprinkle with bacon.

Seasons Greetings

Snowball Cookies

Ingredients -1 cup unslated butter slightly softened -1/2 cup powered sugar do NOT pack your powered sugar -1 teaspoon vanilla

-2 1/4 cups all purpose flour do NOT pack your flour -1 cup mini M&Ms any color -Additional powerded sugar for rolling

Instructions 1. Preaheat oven to 175°. Line two cookie sheets with parchment paper.

2.

Mix butter, ½ cup powdered sugar, and vanilla with an electric mixer until fluffy. Add flour, salt and mix until the dough comes together. **This will take a minute or two with a stand mixer.

If you’re using a hand mixer it can take even longer. Get your hands in there if it’s not mixing up.

Eventually it WILL come together like a cookie dough.** Stir in the M&Ms.

3. Scoop 1 tablespoon balls of dough and place on prepared cookie sheet.and potatoes are tender.

Sprinkle with bacon.

4. Bake cookies for 8-10 minutes until bottoms are just slightly brown. Remove from oven and cool for just 5-10 minutes, until you can handle them. Fill a small bowl with powdered sugar and roll each cookie in the sugar until coated. Place on a rack to cool. (Once cookies are cooled, you may want to re-roll them in more powdered sugar.)

5. Cookies can be frozen for up to one month (you may need to re-roll them in powdered sugar after defrosting). Store in an airtight container.
