EDITOR'S NOTE

nce again, the fall has come. Trees are losing their leaves. A cold breeze blows through the windows and

darkness conquers the city after six in the evening. During the fall, most people begin to fall back into their routines and descend into a coma of Christmas anticipation. Though for us Mikkeli people, fall is a time of new and exciting things.

Finally, after almost two years of online lectures our campus has almost fully reopened (rip cafeteria). Even though corona has still an everyday presence in our lives, times are looking better and so do our events. The 32nd Grand Annual Ball looks to be the perfect way to brighten up the dark and cold fall.

The Grand Annual Ball is an event that you do not want to miss. With a more vibrant and exciting atmosphere than ever before, the evening is one to never forget. Filled with

delicious foods and drinks, elegant atmosphere and good company, this event is the highlight of the year. Without of course forgetting about the amazing after-party and herring breakfast the next day.

For the first years, fall is the time when you really get submerged into the whole Mikkeli shenanigans. As you get to know the different events, bond with your year and get elected to the new boards, you are all coming together to this Mikkeli community. Soon it will be your time to teach the new fuksis our dear traditions so learn them well. Luckily for you, in this Bulletin edition we have prepared some useful tips and instructions regarding the different rules at sits, the etiquette at GAB, and how to properly maintain and take care of your overalls. I would also suggest the second years to read them through for some recap, you may even find some things surprising.

As for us second years, our thesis process has slowly started (and our stress levels risen).

Despite that, the long-anticipated exchange process is well underway, and everyone seems to be excited and ready to take on this new journey.

Lastly, despite it being cold and dark and depressing at times remember to take care of your friends and that huomenna vedetään taas.

What is one thing that people misunderstand about you?

Outside of school duties and Probba related work I am actually quite a geek and I have grown up playing videogames with my friends and my brother. I am not scared of socializing, spending a week hiking in the woods, or traveling the world with just a backpack alongside me, but I’ll give you a fair fight in Mario Kart any day.

Was it a mistake to move to Forttis?

Definitely not. Some downsides come with the territory, but always having friends around and being able to host events is worth it.

If you would win a million euros tomorrow, how would you spend that money?

As a person I am pretty low maintenance, but my pants broke a little while ago so I would get a new pair of those. After that, I would invest a good sum, put some away for charity, and treat myself by traveling next summer – if possible.

Who is your favorite Forttis roommate and why is it Tuomas?

I love everyone in Forttis equally and my favorite is Tuomas as he helps with cleaning the most.

What changes you would like to see in the university?

In my eyes something that is lacking in most Finnish Universities is the amount of cooperation with local businesses and organizations. I have understood that in Mikkeli we are provided ample opportunities for hands on experience during normal times, but this has been mostly absent during my studies. This is especially critical in the field of business, where education is centered around many practical skills that cannot be learned from only books. On top of this, I want to see Aalto University and AYY taking more initiative in addressing issues regarding students and society at large. We have some of the brightest minds in the country and we should have that show.

ETIQUETTE FOR THE GRAND ANNUAL BALL

The Grand Annual Ball is just around the corner but no need to worry.

We in Probba have prepared these useful instructions about all the things you need to know regarding the etiquette before GAB. So prepare your dresses and tailcoats for the best event of the year!

Dresscode: Ladies The dress code for ladies is a full-length evening gown which should cover your ankles. In case your dress does not cover your shoulders, you should use accessories to cover them until dessert.

Traditionally your hair should be above your shoulders.

Gentlemen Traditionally a tailcoat or dark suit. They should not be replaced by a tuxedo or a morning dress. Traditionally the tailcoat includes a black tailcoat, a silk ribbon, a white tie, trousers, a white tailcoat shirt, a white tailcoat vest, dark socks, black footwear, gold cufflinks, and pearl brooches.

The handkerchief should be white and placed so that only a narrow streak of approximately one centimeter is on show.

In conclusion: White tie: you can rent these. (Stay tuned for deals!)

Dark suit: black or dark grey, no blues or browns.

Note that if your hair is long enough to be tied up, it should be.

Ribbons: In annual balls, ribbons are used to represent your student organization’s colors. Probba and KY ribbons will be sold on GAB week Monday in the opening ceremony.

Colors and order: Probba Ry: Green/Silver KY: Green/Orange AYY: Purple/Silver Women: On the right side of your bodice, green side down.

Men: Over your right shoulder and under your vest, green side down.

Note: These are general guidelines, no need to stress about them too much. Eg. having a slit on your dress or having your hair in a half updo is just fine.

OVERALLS

Overalls guide In Finland, student overalls are worn in specific student events throughout the year.

From these events you collect badges that you sew onto your overall. Overalls are very practical as you can easily identify your fellow program students and spare yourself from a fashion crisis. In addition, the overalls are comfortable and keep your clothes safe and clean underneath.

Each student organization has its own overall color. As you’ve probably noticed we wear dolla dolla greens while for example business students from Lappeenranta wear bright yellow overalls. Overalls have many traditions regarding them, thus

Wash your overalls only when wearing them. This means that if and most likely when your overalls get dirty, you can't just pop them into the washing machine. Instead what you can do is wear your overalls to the shower and think over your life choices.

Don’t sew badges on top of the business logos, unless you don’t have any other space left. Also the name and logo of your organization is supposed to be always visible so no badges

Badges stick the best when sewn by hand with “karhunlanka” or with double thread. Use glue only as your last option.

Some badges have designated spots for them. For our students the Running Baba badge goes on top of the left leg. Probba badge on the top left corner near your pocket and the KY badge underneath it (see the pictures).

Fall = not cancelled?

The COVID-19 pandemic has been shutting door after door, almost freezing the whole world still. This situation has been on-going for a year. Walking around outside, lurking behind our masks, we have noticed some alarming changes.

C

an you still remember the fresh sensation of Thursday morning? The loving feeling of Poika? The sound your best friend speaking Norwegian? Yes, the long-awaited student events are here to bring back the joy.

These happenings are a very important aspect of our students overall health. Missing out on singing Country Road at 3am or getting too much rest during weekends have had a huge toll on our health. Luckily, you can now cancel your gym membership and get back to the priorities.

Who would not want to spend their Thursday morning covered in cold sweat, writing exercises with shaky hands and taking naps on the second floor couches during breaks? And what really makes this experience great, is that you always get to share it with your shaky friends - and if you get lucky, a literal angel will appear with a cup of coffee and painkillers. There truly is not a single more bonding experience.

It has been heartwarming to see the spirit of Mikkeli finally making it out of the tiny

student apartments and spreading itself all over our little town. Seeing the well-being shine from the pale faces the morning after a great event truly makes life worth living again.

It has also been possible for us to go and experience the great sense of well-being outside of our small town. Spreading our Mikkeli spirit, also known as aiheuttaa pahennusta, all around the great country of Finland.

One thing we are still missing with tears in our eyes is something located right under our feet when we study on campus. We are remaining hopeful that soon we would not have to disappoint professors by always making it to class on Thursdays and we get to invite them to join us to what some might call the best events of the year.

Lastly, we would still like to remind everyone (especially our little fuksi-babas) to stay safe.

And keep in mind that birth control does not protect you from the virus!

Most sits have a fun theme and instructions on what to wear. You don’t get many chances to dress up as a pirate or a piggy, so make the most out of these opportunities! :D

Not only is the song book obviously needed during sits, it also works as a memory book of your sits experiences.

The sits have a planned program, which needs to be started on time in order for us to make the most out of the short time we have.

The main point of sits parties is to get to make new connections with people. Approach people with a positive mindset and it will be guaranteed that you’ll have the time of your life!

As you might know, during the sits you have an opportunity to request a song or a rule by standing up and announcing yourself.

However, there are some restrictions for suggestions.

Helan går is the first song of the sits (first shot) Minnet is the first song of the second period (second shot) Jallutähden alla and Ken ompi should not be requested before the third period

T

here’s a natural tendency for environments to push the organisms towards survival. A famous quote from Charles Darwin “it is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent.

It is the one that is most adaptable to change” describes this well. Quite an intriguing sentence in many ways – which actually is the trigger also for my passion.

University as the time of reflection Before I started my studies in LUT University in 2013 I had two main interests at high school: natural and social science. I wanted to understand more about the change happening in nature or in markets and organizations.

Economics was the path for me.

As I continued my studies, I still struggled to find the one topic that I was urged to know everything about. I later found out that especially bachelor and master’s theses were the needed triggers. I understood that both papers would offer a great opportunity to start deepening the knowledge I am most fascinated about. Thus, I used a couple of weeks to reflect my interests and possible topic options before writing a single word. Ultimately, before graduating I already had had quite many selfreflecting moments which gave me an initial direction for my future career.

Turning interests into reality After graduation I got my first job as a transformation consultant at IBM and was more excited than ever. This opportunity enabled me to understand different organizations and their evolvement better. In addition, my studies in later stages provided me with a new kind of focus on the people side of change and change management. It quickly became obvious to me that there simply is no transformation without people and their adequate change behaviors. The success of transformations relies on people but for some reason the people side of change is often remarkably undervalued. I started connecting the dots and thought that maybe I could provide value deriving from my interests towards transformations and people.

Working with my passion Today I am helping organizations to realize their transformational goals by engaging people towards change. Simultaneously, I build my capabilities in innovation management.

Ultimately, I can already say that I get to do those things I truly enjoy. A career path is however a unique journey for everyone. It’s not a necessity to find a true passion – not to mention that interests will evolve and change over time. Rather it’s about looking around and trying to understand better what are the topics that get you a bit more excited. It’s the inherent interest that leads to professional fulfillment which again almost naturally enables - not just survival but also to success.

We start off with an important question…

Which year’s Baba are you?

I’m Baba ’07. I graduated in 2011.

What is your current position at Marimekko?

In short I am the Head of brand communications and engagement, which means I am in charge of managing the global marketing team of Marimekko. I work closely with the design team, planning what our future collections are going to look like according to what the current consumer “moods” are. I also work closely with our sales teams as well as our merchandising teams. The actual team I lead consists of a global marketing manager, a concept designer, and the marketing manager of the Asian market. We sort of give global directives on what Marimekko is going to do next, and each country adjusts our design plan depending on its local market and culture. I’m basically in charge of the commercial aspect of the creative process. I am also in charge of our loyalty program as well as our tone of voice through the Marimekko newsletter.

How did you end up in your current position?

I started at Marimekko in 2018 when I moved to Finland after working abroad. I specifically wanted to work for a Finnish company, preferably a design brand with values similar to mine, and Marimekko seemed like the right fit. I first started as the global

marketing manager and after two years I was given a team of more people to manage which lead to my current position as the head of brand communications and engagement.

What is challenging about your job?

The biggest challenge I think is to communicate the core message of Marimekko in new ways time after time. Marimekko is already a strongly established brand in Finland, but not necessarily that well known in other countries. To find a way to introduce Marimekko to new customers but simultaneously keep it interesting for the loyal existing customers can sometimes be difficult. Even though it’s one of the hardest things about my job it is also one of the best things; the internationality keeps things interesting. Brand management of course is also always a challenge; for everyone to be on the same page about what Marimekko means as a brand.

What is the best thing about your job?

My job is very rewarding. It is amazing to see the outcome of what I’ve worked for, and how the target audience receives it. It is also close to my heart to be bringing Finnish design to global markets –joy and colors to the everyday lives of our customers.

You’ve worked in Copenhagen and Paris. What was it like working abroad? Did you come across any major cultural differences?

ALUMNI INTERVIEW

I worked for a French company in Finland, Denmark, and France. The French workplace culture is very distinct and it was of course present in all locations. The biggest difference, however, was the visible internationality in Finland and Denmark compared to France. The Danish are more similar to us Finnish, which is probably also why I felt a bit more at home working in Copenhagen than in France.

What are your tips for a student who wants to work abroad?

1. Gain international experience as early as possible. Us babas get that automatically during our exchange of course.

2. Network. Make connections with people around the world. Get to know your fellow international students!

3. Work in a Finnish company with opportunities abroad. Make sure to express your international interests from the very beginning.

4. Be brave. Finnish education is valued highly abroad, they’ll be lucky to hire you!

Would you want to work abroad again?

It’s not an impossible idea. I’m so far very happy with my current position and I feel that it is so international that it satisfies that need for international experience at the moment. Even though working abroad is a unique opportunity, it is still always a challenge. I do still dream of working for Marimekko at a different location sometime in the future. It is addicting after all; the feeling of a fresh start in a new, unfamiliar place.

What’s something that you learned during the International Business BScBA Program that has helped you in your career?

The program is so diverse, it helped me find my own path which was marketing. An important concrete skill that I learned was working in teams with different people. Having to do team projects and

presentations with different teams every three weeks really prepares you for working with different types of people from different countries in the future.

Presentation skills are of course also something I learned in Mikkeli that I still use to this day.

What are your tips for a graduating student looking for a job?

I myself after completing my master’s studies entered a management trainee program that L’Oreal offered.

Many larger companies offer these kinds of trainee programs and it’s a great way to take the first steps on your career. You often get to try out different positions through possible rotation inside the company, and after the trainee program they offer you an actual position. I also highly recommend taking on trainee positions during your possible master’s studies. Having some work experience in your field of interest always helps you to take that next step in your career.

And lastly, the most important question…

What is your most cherished Mikkeli memory?

What a difficult question – there are so many! I was both a Bööna and part of the Pentti Crew. My most cherished memories must be from all different kinds of theme Penttis. I’ve actually heard that a Pentti party theme that we invented ourselves is still a tradition to this day; Firman Pikkujoulut. It’s heartwarming to see the traditions still staying strong. I’ve been to Pentti a few times after graduating and each time it’s a lot of fun. I hope it opens for you guys soon too!

I thank Essi for the interview and she kindly says it to have been a pleasure. We chat a bit more about the lovely Mikkeli life and say our goodbyes. Even though it has been a few years since she studied here, Essi is still clearly full of that good old Mikkeli spirit.

STUDENT EXCHANGE - MEXICO Written by: Merika Mattila & Emilia Sundqvist

E

xcitement filled our minds as we scheduled a FaceTime together in May to book our flights to Mexico.

This was an excitement filled with uncertainty that we had learned during the past year and a half; we made sure that the flights could be cancelled if something was to happen, if the border closed or the school cancelled our exchange. But somehow, out of pure luck, that did not happen. We met at the airport at the end of August, all we had was a one-way ticket, 50 kilograms of luggage, 10 nights booked at an airbnb in a city of 5 million people where we had never been, and each other. Ready for adventure.

We have gotten the chance to study at one of the most prestigious universities in Latin America; Tecnologico de Monterrey. Going from our preferred way of studying 1 course at a time in Mikkeli to the same 6 courses at once for the whole semester was definitely a handful but we are getting through it, one exam week at a time. We made a strategic decision of choosing almost the same courses, courses in sustainability and innovation, human resources, ethics and culture. Thanks to this decision and the courses being online, we have been able to help each other and to travel around the country together, seeing beautiful places with a few zoom sessions here and there.

Cheap airbnbs and hostels have enabled us to spend almost half of our time here in different locations. First, we spent Independence day together with many other exchange students in Guanajuato and San Miguel and ended up traveling there for 2 weeks. After that we went backpacking to the Yucatan coast, visiting classic tourist destinations, such as Cancun, Holbox, Playa del Carmen, Cozumel, and Tulum.

Visiting so many places after not traveling at all for almost 2 years feels almost surreal, like we had forgotten that there is an entire world to see and experience. The online lectures allowed us to effortlessly travel for three weeks in the coast straight with the only big problem being able to find wifi during the right times.

Studying while traveling has definitely required some time management and truthfully, it is sometimes a real logistical nightmare.

However, we would be lying if we did not admit that it feels kind of fun to write essays and listen to lectures in honeymoon locations.

Before coming here we were sure that exchange during a pandemic would be a zoom filled fall semester in our 2 bedroom apartment with hopes of getting the campus to open again. However, we somehow got lucky to get the best of both worlds; being able to see everything while also getting through courses without problems. Mexico is a beautiful place; people are open and they love to talk, the weather is (almost) always nice and the food is amazing (despite the fact that the only snacks are chips and everything has way too much sugar). We are currently enjoying every moment and already planning new adventures.

Only time will tell when we buy our return flights back to Finland, we don’t really feel like it yet! ¡Besos y abrazos de México! xoxo Merika & Emilia

S

o hello, my name is Miku, or Mikael Blinnikka. I am studying the Information Services Management (ISM) Master’s Degree in Aalto Otaniemi, and I will talk a little bit about the degree and how it is to study in Otaniemi in general.

So what is ISM? Well, it is a master’s degree with three possible tracks, there is Information Systems Science which is more focused on IT systems, so there’s some programming and development involved.

The second is Business Analytics, this is largely focused on (big) data to manage financial risks, glean insights in consumer marketing & research, and be able to work in an increasingly digitalized world.

The third is Supply Chain Management, this is built around logistics, inventory, warehousing, distribution, operations, and how to do it in the most efficient way possible. There is an increasing focus on sustainability in this area which makes it particularly interesting if you want to have a green focus in your studies.

I chose ISM because I wanted some more ‘hard skills’ moving into the future, and we receive automatic entry to the degree after the Bachelor’s. I haven’t yet decided which direction I will go. But I have a minor in the Information Technology Program from the summer already, just ask me if you want to know more, I am one of the new program coordinators.

It’s a big step moving into master’s, and a lot to take in. Mikkeli was my home, and after a mind-blowing experience on exchange in Hong Kong, it was very sad to let it all go.

However, all those feelings of nostalgia and loss vanished as soon as I was introduced to my new tutor group in Otaniemi. I really cannot impress upon you how much I have come to love my tutors and tutor group in just couple short months. From the humble beginnings of Master’s orientation week, to some legendary events and parties where I met new face after new face. You will have the chance to form the same incredible bonds you did in Mikkeli and make friends for life.

Legendary people and events aside, actually studying in Otaniemi has been fantastic. It takes a little while to remember where everything is of course, but the facilities are very modern, you meet new people in your courses, and the professors are of the same top quality you are used to in Mikkeli.

STUDYING IN OTANIEMI

However, there are some differences that I will quickly hammer out: 1. Modules run for six weeks at a time instead of three. It’s a nice midway between Mikkeli and a traditional university schedule. In those six weeks most take two courses. Psychopaths take three or more. *Cough-Osama-Cough*.

2. You can take courses from any area of Aalto, so you can take courses in engineering, computer science, or arts design and architecture. However, there is a preference system. So, in my case as an ISM student, I get first preference on ISM courses. Then other master’s students get second preference, then everybody else gets third preference.

3. Many courses will have recommended prerequisites, many of mine require programming knowledge, which is difficult when you don’t get very exposed to this in Mikkeli. Others will require high-level statistics skills or something

similar which can make for a challenging experience. However, in the master’s, if you get a bad grade in a course, you can always leave it out of your transcript and try again next year, so do not let it be a barrier!

I would love to tell you more, but there is a word limit here which I already broke. But what I will say is that when you get to Master’s, dive-in headfirst and enjoy your time as much as you can, join the wide variety of clubs available and meet everyone you can, we will have forty more years to win the rat race.

There is no hurry. Love yourself, love others, and grow with the Aalto community. It truly is the best student life in the world.
