A PANKALAMPI ENTHUSIAST EIC

Dear Babas, Editing this issue of the Bulletin has been a bit melodramatic for me. First of all, Mikkeli has never felt so empty with the departure of Babas' 21 and exchange fellows, while the new fuksit have yet to come. Another thing is my role as the Editor-in-Chief of Probba has 50% expired, and I had only realized this right before I finalized the edition. Sometimes it is impossible to believe how time flies so fast; one morning you wake up and suddenly it knocks on your door, announcing you have half a year left to mess up do the best you can with the Bulletin.

But hey, it's summertime! Only the thought of it makes the excitement to creep up on my spine. So I decided to let it all slide away and enjoy our beloved sun-dipped Pankalampi (along with the fierce mosquitos who attack like Spartans). We should all agree the best way to treat ourselves after a hectic Pentti day is none other than midnight swimming, although that makes it seem more challenging to show up at class on Thursday. JuhannusMöbba is around the corner, in which our wildlife living skills would be thoroughly tested, followed closely by Mikkeli Boat Trip - another chapter of Mikkeli Road Trip. Even with so many people leaving, 4 | BULLETIN • MAY 2023

I doubt that Mikkeli summer will ever keep you bored! And as a person coming from a country where the prime of summer could reach 40°C, I must say the Finnish summer is perfectly comfortable.

So, Bulletin Summer 2023. For Babas' 20, this is the final issue before your graduation and becoming 'official' alumni. For Babas' 21, this is the final issue before your exchange adventure. And for Babas' 22, this is also the last issue of the Bulletin being completely ours, because once Babas' 23 come, my words will primarily be for them.

Enjoy the fullest!

President's Dear Babas, What a spring it has been! I hope each and every one of you has been enjoying what Mikkeli has to offer as the days grow longer and summer draws near.

The same theme continued in Wappu when even a few alumni from two decades ago came to visit us at the Probba tent. One could say that the two hours of sleep before putting up the tent didn’t go to waste! The Baba Wappu was something to experience, and personally, I can’t wait for next year.

Remember, that you are always welcome at Mikkeli!

But now it’s time to prepare for the summertime of our lives. In a little more than a month, we will be having an unforgettable midsummer at JuhannusMöbba. I wish to see everyone there! The summer studies will feel like a walk in a park when you’re enjoying the endless afternoons at Pankalampi, or cheering FC Probba to win at Hänski. I must say that I have never been this excited about the summer.

I wish you all sunny and warm upcoming months!

All the “ulkkaris” and our friends got to experience the power of the Mikkeli Spirit with the fearless team leaders leading them through the checkpoints. Especially lovely was to see all the alumni who attended MRT. I was afraid you would’ve made chaos, but all you did was make us even more happy with our choice of study place!

English being my second language, my confidence with it physically (thanks to the food that I couldn't resist, haha), mentally, and academically. I wouldn't call myself an active gal when it comes to school events and activities since alcohol and socializing aren't really my things. But whenever I did show up, I had a blast.

One of my professors taught me to appreciate every single moment of my university life, and that stick with me. Mikkeli has become a huge part of my life. Tbh, every time I travel, I yearn for the tranquil embrace of Mikkeli. So, here I am, ready to embark on a new chapter,but I will carry with me not just unforgettable memories, but also the lessons learned and the love I found along the way."

But those fears washed away when I saw the incredible, tight-knit community here that made me feel so welcome. Beyond the unique, intensive academics program here, I’ve learned so much about myself and I hope to become a better person from it. The president of Probba, and the Sunshine of the Year at the same time.

How can you handle all of those yet still keeping the most positive spirit?

I guess life always requires a certain amount of positivity! I like to look at things from the bright side and seek for the solutions whenever needed. In my opinion, being an open minded and easily approachable person is really important part of being a chairperson. The whole close community of Mikkeli students makes being positive easy. In fact, I think we have a lot of sunshines here!

Has there been any time you don’t feel ‘sunshine’ at all?

is absolutely rewarding, it’s occasionally also stressing and time-consuming. I still think that some sparks of sun are present each and every day. Especially now with long and warm days, it’s easy to look at all the positive things around me.

If there is one word to describe our Probba community, what will be that word according to you?

Friendship. This is the first word that came to my mind. We at Probba community come from different backgrounds from all around the world. Still, together we have experienced all sorts of things that make us close to each other. The friendships formed in Mikkeli will for sure last for a lifetime.

Mari is no stranger to our Babas in the three recent years as she has been the Guest Lecturer in the Global Economy course. More inspiringly, she is a Baba Alumni who also shares the same Mikkeli spirit with us.

BABAlumni Studies in Mikkeli I began my studies in Mikkeli approximately ten years ago, in the autumn of 2012. In Mikkeli, I very much enjoyed the international atmosphere of the campus, created by the rich mix of nationalities both within the student body and in the faculty. Personally, I also appreciated starting my “adult life” in a slightly smaller town with a tight-knit student community before moving into a bigger city.

Looking back, I’m also happy with my decision to pursue my Bachelor’s degree in English, as it was excellent preparation for my future studies and career. Finally, the BScBA programme prepares you well to work effectively in a team, manage projects independently and deliver presentations – all skills I use nearly daily as a consultant.

From Mikkeli to London & Helsinki – my subsequent studies and career During my studies in Mikkeli, I became interested in topics like economics and political economy. Inspired by this, I decided to pursue my exchange studies at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden, where I attended courses in economics and economic history. My exchange term served as a confirmation for me: this was something I wanted to study full-time for my Master’s.

I spotted a couple of interesting programmes that I applied to both abroad

I was thrilled when I eceived an email regarding my acceptance into the London School of Economics – and I am very grateful to the professors in Mikkeli who helped me in the application process. A fun fact: there was also another girl from Aalto Mikkeli who studied at the LSE at the same time as I. I studied Political Science and Political Economy, and she majored in HR. Studies in London were very enjoyable – and intense. It took me a while to get used to the new study rhythm. The focus in many LSE programmes is highly academic, and it was interesting to hear from professors about their latest research.

It was also in London where I first became interested in consulting. I discovered consulting through university collaboration, such as career fairs, company excursions and campus recruiting. Events like this are a fantastic way to learn more about different industries, and I fully recommend that you take advantage of them as well. What drew me into consulting was the continuous learning opportunities, working with very talented professionals and exposure to different types of organisations and businesses. After moving back to Finland and working in the financial sector for a while, I began my career in consulting at Accenture.

Working as a technology consultant At present, I work as an Associate Manager 13 | BULLETIN • MAY 2023

BABAlumni for Technology Consulting at Accenture Health & Public Service. I mainly work with public-service clients. My role is typically at the intersection of the clients’ business and technology. Some topics I have worked with include service design and UX, agile development, business process automation, IT strategy and data analytics.

Whereas it is important to have an interest in technology and IT in this line of work, not all roles within technology require “stereotypical” tech skills like programming. In fact, more and more research is revealing the value of diverse teams for particularly topics like innovation. Moreover, given the disruptive role of technology in today’s society, it is imperative that diverse voices are heard and perspectives considered in its development – otherwise we risk biases and suboptimal solutions.

If you enjoy working in a dynamic environment with solutions that have the potential to profoundly impact how businesses function – and many more things – then technology consulting might be for you.

Lastly, I want to encourage you to remain curious and open when it comes to your studies and career – and follow your organic interests. They will usually lead you to the most interesting opportunities.

Helsingin Ekonomit My career story is definitely not the most glamorous one, but it just might be the most common one.

I started business studies in my early twenties, mostly to please my family who thought that working in restaurants would be a dead end job. I did extremely well in school, but I didn’t really find business studies that interesting.

To be honest, almost the whole time during my Bachelor’s studies I had no idea what I would want to do with my degree. I actually thought that the best part of school was when I did my exchange period in Bali and was living my best life surfing and enjoying the sun.

It was just a fluke I ended up getting an internship at L’Oréal before my Bachelor’s thesis and realised, maybe I had really found my true calling. “So this is marketing!”, I thought.

Through that internship I found something that I thought I was really good at. Marketing allowed me to combine both my creativity and analytical skills. During my time at Loréal I also invented a way to save thousands of euros in packaging promotional materials every year (still in use today, over a decade later!) – that really sparked something within me. If an intern like me could come up with something so clever for marketing, I thought that the only boundary could be my own creativity.

So, I decided to pursue a career in marketing. I continued with my Master’s studies while already working a full time job in charge of marketing for a fashion retail chain in Finland. When the retail chain had a change in ownership and our marketing budgets were frozen, I found an interesting opportunity through my school – I applied for a fixed term job creating demand for a Finnish brand in California.

And I got the job! So I took some time off from my full time job (and my Master’s studies) and went to Los Angeles for three months to help the Finnish company get into local stores in California and Arizona.

I only got back to Finland for five weeks after that to quit my job and leave for Los Angeles again, this time to stay for almost nine months, creating a whole new fitness brand from scratch.

Although the experience of working in marketing in Los Angeles was beyond incredible, I returned to Finland in 2016 and landed a job as a Digital Marketing Manager for a well-known Finnish B2B company. Out of all the applicants, I was the only candid one who didn’t try to sugar coat the fact that the company wasn’t doing a great job with digital marketing at that point. They knew that themselves and so my candidness got me the job.

The Digital Marketing Manager role was supposed to be a temporary job, but I ended up staying for five years and took the company from having practically zero digital visibility to being the industry leader in digitising their services. Somewhere

Helsingin Ekonomit between all the development work and travelling I also managed to actually finish my Master’s thesis and graduate.

I was lucky enough to have lots of possibilities within the organisation to develop my own role, grow my team and educate colleagues about digital marketing.

That’s what kept me there for a long time. In this role I also managed the digital marketing partners we had in many of our operating countries and that turned out to be the hardest part of the entire job.

I started off as a student not knowing what I’ll be when I graduate and grew into a complete marketing fanatic over the years.

Not only do I now work full time in a digital marketing agency, but I also do pro bono work to help entrepreneurs with digital marketing, coach younger marketers, do speaking gigs about marketing, teach marketing at universities and basically live and breathe marketing all day every day.

One day I just decided that there has to be a better way for companies to work with marketing agencies and I decided the easiest way to make that happen was to run the agency myself.

And so I found Trickle after one more pit stop. Or actually, Trickle found me with the help of a headhunter. I currently run the operations of Trickle Helsinki, a digital marketing agency, and sit on the board of directors. And finally feel like I’m exactly where I want to be. Like I found what I want to be when I grow up.

The moral of the story is that you don’t always need to know where you’re going. The coincidences on the way will give you direction and lead you to a place you didn’t even know exists.

And that’s a good thing – you might just end up finding what you want to be when you grow up.

We would really love to know about your name and yourself!

My name is Anu Koskinen. I'm 50 years old, and I have two children. I have worked as an entrepreneur for three years, one year here from 16th of May 2022 . I started in another restaurant in Mikkeli, but that place wasn't good and then the COVID came and that's why I changed the place. I have worked on restaurant and cafeteria business for my whole life, since I was 15.

Different jobs.

How is it different between your previous workplaces in restaurants and our cafeteria?

Well, the biggest difference is the food and the price of the food. Because Kela requires 19 | BULLETIN • MAY 2023

some things about food and the price has to be very low, you have to consider that, unlike a normal restaurant. Another thing is the atmosphere. I like the energy here.

Young people, very lively. Where I worked before there were mostly working men, construction workers and so on. But this cafeteria is open for all people, it's just that they can't find it easily and I myself haven't advertised it. Because I have been so much alone, I kind of have enough customers for myself. In the next fall when the kids come, we can advertise more and maybe have some outsiders also in here.

Am I understanding correctly that you run this business by yourself?

Yes, this is my own business.

Humans of Aalto How long is your normal workday?

Usually I start at 7am. Sometimes I finish at 4pm, sometimes at 6pm.

What are the difficulties in running the business on our campus?

Basically the price is the biggest challenge.

Yeah, because all the prices of the ingredients have gone up; some chicken meat almost doubled in one year. Apart from that, I always try different things and try to imagine what you would like to eat.

But it's quite difficult because you come from all over the world and because of the age difference between us. So even though I have kids at the age of 18 and 20, I don't really know what the people at your age eat around the world.

I usually make a menu eight weeks in advance, so there is very much variety in the menu. And then if I get some ingredients with a good price, then I change the menu.

And if I see that people don't like some food, I drop it off the list. One of the things that students maybe don't understand is that Keller requires us to have fish two times a week.

Is that a mandatory requirement?

Yes, for nutritional purposes. Well, not everyone likes fish, and fish is very expensive. So it's a job to think about how to add those fish courses every week. And also, the menu needs to be vegan inclusive because it goes for more people.

Would a suggestion for a food survey be helpful?

Actually, yesterday I talked with Jevgeni and we will do a survey in June. It would be nice to somehow tell the students why I make some kind of food and what it is like.

Because there are hundreds of pages of instructions from Kela and while we don't actually get ingredients much cheaper than if you bought it individually in a supermarket.

explore MEXICO Tuomas, Baba'20 In this part, I’m going to be talking about the experience itself and tell a bit about some meaningful things that I learned from it all.

First thing that we faced was academic life clashing with the Mexican “mañana” culture. So, for example, it is mandatory to be present in the classes, but it actually isn’t.

Some professors can be annoying about this whereas some don’t really care at all. There is absolutely no consistency when it comes to anything academic-related, but usually the professors are okay.

The city we were in was Guadalajara. It has a lot to offer and is probably the most progressive city in Mexico in many regards.

For example, using gender-neutral suffixes is not an official thing, so instead of buen(o/a) they write buenX and pronounce it as

“e”. One of the professors also claimed that in GDL there are people from all centuries, as some might still feel about some things like they would be from the 1500s, while others are a bit more progressive.

To give you a better picture of the place, it’s a beautiful city in the middle of the mountains. I made a rookie mistake of not exploring the city enough from the start as I always thought I had time, but in the end there are endless things to do there. From the top I’d recommend all the hiking places around the city such as the canyon to the north and the warm fountains to the west and the waterfalls of huaxtla. It was nice to see how many local ranches there were nearby, definitely a jump back in time.

Mexico is unbelievably beautiful with a variety of landscapes from rainforests to 22 | BULLETIN • MAY 2023

Exchange Story I definitely recommend traveling, as Mexico is so diverse that the cultures even within the country vary immensely and the people are even recognizable between each other in most cases. It was especially interesting to learn about the dynamics of the states as some have a very strong individual identity, and the influence of the conquistadores can still be seen in architecture or habits. It was weird to see full-on French, alps-style or Italian old towns in the middle of Mexican mountains or jungle. I’ll list some of the places below.

isolated deserts and from waterfalls to huge mountain ranges. If you are the type that would enjoy any of beautiful beaches, nature, cute towns, culture, history, sports or parties, Mexico is surely a good choice as the options are unlimited.

You might be wondering about two things, the safety or the language skills needed.

Regarding safety you don’t have to be worried about this either. I’m not going to tell you it’s the safest place, but if you act accordingly, everything will be fine. The locals are one of the nicest people there can be so it’s not like you should be scared of every single person coming your way.

Unlike most other exchange students from Mikkeli, in Mexico you get 2 separate weeks of holidays in the middle of the fall. I think I was away from school at one time for 2,5 weeks or so because I scheduled it nicely etc. so definitely time for some fun trips.

Exchange Story places to visit. Also if you enjoy parties Cabo San Lucas offers quite a (American) nightlife, but is beautiful with amazing beaches as well.

- Yucatan: I could tell so much about this place; we spent a couple of weeks there after our school ended, and it was amazing. In short, we didn’t spend a lot of time in Cancun, but instead going to nearby Playa del Carmen, and both islands of Cozumel and Isla Mujeres where we rented a golf cart in the latter, and in Cozumel we spend one night and rented a car to drive around the untouched beaches.

If you thought that Mexico is all about dry deserts and siestas, you were unfortunately wrong! There is even a state where the forests are maintained according to the Finnish principles (they flew to Finland to check the forests) so that was something quite cool as well.

I think Mexico has so much to offer and is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. You will meet tons of other exchange students, the campus is very American style with facilities for everything and their own sports teams, so if you survived Mikkeli’s academic life, Mexico will be a breeze.

Continuing to master’s studies After graduating from the BScBA programme, our students have an automatic study right to continue to the School of Business master’s programmes at Otaniemi Campus.
