The Midnight Black Collection

A New Dimension in Security

Working in harmony with darker environments, the Midnight Black Collection has been created for businesses and sites that require or prefer a security solution which offers unrivalled, contemporary, and discreet protection that compliments their surroundings.

Simplicity, Intelligence and Strength working for you and with you.

Motion detectors

The only way is ethics

Another fi lm hit our cinema screens in early 2023 outlining what could “theoretically” go wrong with the application of AI, at the same time many experts predict a greater role for the technology going forward

Perimeter detectors

Back in 1968, Arthur C Clarke wrote a novel called 2001: A Space Odyssey based on the screenplay he co-wrote of the same name. In that story the spaceship Discovery One is maintained by an artificially intelligent computer called HAL 9000, which eventually refuses to do as it is told and ends up defending itself when threatened with disconnection. Fast forward to 2022 and we have the movie M3gan (released in the UK in 2023) in which an artificially intelligent doll develops selfawareness and becomes hostile towards anyone that it sees threaten the child it has been paired with. In the intervening years between the two, AI has appeared in a host of films and TV programmes, usually with unhappy results (especially for those aboard Red Dwarf when AI computer Holly goes a little awry after spending three million years on his own) so the angle of how AI may not work well is regularly used in the fictional world.

Keypads

The technology also received some negative publicity in real life with the introduction of services like ChatGPT and the ease in which work that should be carried out by humans can be carried out by AI. Google trends analysis by Tiny Wow found that searches for ‘AI essay writing’ hit a high of 2,041% in December compared to the last five years. These findings emerge as a recent Guardian report revealed that a lecturer found that one fifth of submitted university essays detected bot assistance from AI programs. A spokesperson from Tiny Wow commented on the findings: “The increased interest in AI technology is sure to have an impact on education, businesses and the general public. Utilising this incredible tool should be done so with caution, as the temptation to let an intelligent software do the work for you can open you up to potential risks of plagiarism or presenting inaccurate facts.” In terms of “doing the work for you” M3gan raises the question: if we use AI to educate and raise our children, who is the parent? Plus who will need journalists, authors, songwriters etc if AI can do it all for us?

For the security industry, AI has the capacity to reduce unwanted alarms and expand the abilities of CCTV analytics - and it is likely its adoption will only increase as systems evolve. Yet there are concerns. Ethical AI is described online as “well-defined ethical guidelines regarding fundamental values, including such things as individual rights, privacy, non-discrimination, and nonmanipulation” and will play a huge role in the use of AI alongside surveillance as technology develops at a rapid pace. Ethical AI is going to be key for security providers given that the potential negatives have been cultivated in the mainstream media since 1968 so the scare stories have already been written.

Banham Academy expands into the East Midlands

Banham Academy has opened its second apprenticeship academy in Derby.

The Derby skills and training centre will officially open its doors on 30th January 2023 with a cohort of 15 apprentices enrolled, ready to start the Level 3 Fire Emergency and Security Systems (FESS) Technician Apprenticeship Standard.

Situated within the Pride Park development, the new training centre will allow the Academy to further its reach across the UK, offering accredited training to more young people and continue to provide the next generation of engineers with career pathways within the fire and security sectors.

Kevin Faulkner, Head of Banham Academy, said: “I am thrilled to announce Banham Academy’s expansion into Derby. Our decision to expand into the East Midlands was due to demand – we wanted to make our training more accessible in the North to allow young

EMC test facility secures UKAS accreditation

Paxton has gained UKAS accreditation for its in-house public-facing product test facility.

UKAS visited Paxton’s UK headquarters in Brighton to carry out a formal assessment of EMC Test Facility which originally opened in August 2019. The government-appointed agency assessed Paxton’s ability and competence in performing product testing including an audit of the quality management system. The facility has now been officially granted UKAS accreditation, confirming that it meets the ISO 17025 standard for Laboratory

people in these areas to also benefit from the skills and training we have been offering apprentices in London.”

Accreditation.

Brett Glass, Paxton’s Compliance Manager has overseen the development of the facility. He explains: “We are extremely proud to have gained UKAS accreditation. For any manufacturer looking for the highest possible quality and level of testing, this is the accreditation they want and need. Gaining it has been an in-depth and worthwhile process. Our Compliance team has been working towards it for some time whilst testing our products and that of many manufacturers from the South East of the UK.”

In brief

• Skills for Security, the fire and security apprenticeship provider, has maintained its OFSTED Good Provider status after a 500% growth in just three years. Under the new leadership team which was introduced in August 2019, the organisation has increased its apprenticeship provision from 100 live apprentices in one location to over 500 enrolled across the UK, from Scotland to Cornwall.

Paxton opened the test facility to maximise the efficiency and quality of its own product development. It has enabled them to launch new products and system additions quickly during the pandemic and global component shortage.

Whilst researching during the planning phase of the facility, Paxton decided to offer product testing externally to support businesses with quick pre-compliance testing and a bespoke service. The facility includes an Electromagnetic Compatibility Chamber (EMC) for manufacturers who need to perform emission and immunity tests at three metres. It also has equipment to carry out Electrostatic Discharge (ESD), surge, transients, and power quality tests.

ECHO-connected URNs surpass 250,000 to facilitate a faster response

ECHO is now supporting over 250,000 police Intruder and Hold-up alarm system URNs (Unique Reference Numbers), facilitating faster more efficient police response to emergency alarms from the seven ECHO-connected police forces.

Following on the heels of Avon and Somerset Constabulary, Essex Police and Metropolitan Police, four additional police forces – City of London Police, Northumbria Police, Bedfordshire Police and Kent Police - have recently joined the vanguard in getting ECHO-connected which, according to police estimates, delivers time savings of up to four minutes in response times to ‘confirmed’ alarm activations. The ground-breaking ECHO service automatically transfers alarm activation signals from Alarm Receiving Centres (ARCs) to ECHO-connected police control rooms, replacing legacy manual voice calling procedures.

Richard Jenkins ECHO Director, commented: “As ECHO’s service continues to increase its reach and deliver efficiencies across more regions of the UK, in support of the National Police Chiefs’ Council’s policy requirements, we welcome and recognise adoption of this new technology as a facilitator of faster police response and crime deterrence.

“The expanded service now supports over 250,000 Intruder and Hold-up alarm systems in residential, commercial and public sector buildings at the end of its first full calendar year of operation – 2022. The seven ECHO-connected police forces are offering homeowners, commercial and publicly operated premises a greater degree of assurance with speedier and more effective police response.”

Over a million active residential and commercial users of professionally installed Intruder and Hold-up alarm systems (installed by an NSI or SSAIB approved installer) are set to benefit as more police forces across the UK get ECHOconnected during 2023/24.

John Davies commented, “It’s an honour to have been associated with the BSIA for the last 30 years, and to have been able to contribute to its fantastic work across the whole British Security Industry throughout that time. The industry has evolved and grown beyond all recognition over the last three decades, as has TDSi, but the BSIA continues to be a positive unifying element which promotes excellence, good business practices and trust, which define British security worldwide and uphold its well-deserved reputation.”

THE BOTTOM LINE

IN ASSOCIATION WITH CSL

The interview that gets the facts from the top

This month, in the final edition of the Bottom Line, Simon Banks reflects on the past decade and a half of conversations with Fire & Security professionals. Thank you to all those 170 people that contributed over the past 16 years!

Where did the idea for the Bottom Line interview column come from?

Back in 2006, I suggested to the team at PSI Magazine that a monthly column discussing the latest challenges facing our industry would be informative and thought-provoking. We would provide a platform for those in our sector who are seeking to bring about change. The first edition went out in January 2007, where we spoke to Tony Bygraves of MRFS. The month after we spoke to Ken Meanwell of the NPCC (National Police Chiefs’ Council), then known as (ACPO) Association of Chief Police Officers. Both offered great insight to kick us off and from there we were up and running. Tony and Ken both remain industry influencers to this day!

Over the next fifteen years I spoke to people from across the industry spectrum from Installation Companies, ARCs, the Police, Associations, Training Providers, Mobile Network Operators, Retailers, Event Organisers and Investment Funds. Each interviewee offered a unique and open insight into the latest challenges they faced and, most importantly, the solutions they had identified to assist them in overcoming these. I truly hope that sharing this information helped others who found themselves in a similar position. All interviews had a common theme, to provide honest and valuable insights into topical problems that would be made easier by hearing from people who’ve solved issues through experience.

How has our industry changed over this period?

The industry has changed significantly. In CSL’s world of alarm signalling, we have come a long way from PSTN reliant systems and today as part of the UK’s All IP project, we are seeing the retirement of this technology. From the integration of 2G, 3G, 4G and now 5G, the possibilities of what connectivity solutions can offer has never been so significant! Tie this in with advancements in police response via the ECHO project, and we are moving forward towards the best solutions to face the latest challenges in our fast-paced world.

What role has the Bottom Line played?

The Bottom Line has helped me to continue to explore my interests and passions beyond the companies and associations I am involved with. Innovation, skills, investment and growth have been part of my ambition for business and life for many years. Producing the Bottom Line has allowed me to speak to so many inspiring people who are all focused on improving our sector for our customers, colleagues and the wider community that depend on us every day.

Each year, we have provided our interviewees with a framed version of their interview. This small jesture of thanks has been met with such positive feedback, showing the value all our contributors have placed on their chance to share their stories.

What next?

Whilst the Bottom Line is coming to an end, we will be continuing to explore these topics across the wider ecosystem of IoT (the Internet of Things) on the CSL website. A new dedicated blog section will be launched shortly where many topics will be discussed with the people who are playing key roles in the changes we are experiencing in our work and personal lives. If you have a topic you believe needs to be addressed, feel free to contact Joe Sheppard via LinkedIn or at CSL: marketing@csl-group.com

Fisheye camera makes AI at the edge more accessible

Hanwha Techwin has launched the XNF-9013RV, an AI fisheye camera designed to make AI at the edge more accessible and actionable for security teams. The camera comes with AI-based object detection and classification, and improved image quality features, along with IK10 vandal resistance.

Accurate object detection and classification enables operators to quickly identify people, faces, number plates, and vehicle types including cars, trucks, buses, and bicycles. This offers more situational awareness and context to an event.

Irrelevant motions such as waving trees, moving shadows and animals are ignored, all of which would usually be the cause of false alarms with standard motion detection technology.

Operators can therefore better focus on responding to real incidents and emergencies.

The XNF-9013RV comes with WiseStream III, the latest in Hanwha Techwin’s AI compression technology.

4 x drive fixing screws

The network video recorder is supplied as a 1TB unit supporting up to four PoE cameras. It includes a range of AI based detection capabilities when used with compatible cameras. It is one of a range of recorders providing from four to sixty-four channels and capable of recording at 4k resolution.

Getting started

The single power supply outputs 48v DC to power the NVR and provide PoE power through the four camera LAN RJ45 ports. It has a maximum power rating of 57.6W.

At first power-up the NVR checks the HDMI monitor is capable of handling 1080p signals and if so gives you the option to change the output resolution. There is a timed save period in case of incompatibility. This is then followed by the initial screen to set a suitable password. An unlock pattern option is also accessible.

Once set the basic login screen is shown with a drop-down language selection.

The NVR then presents a Wizard to assist with establishing the basic setup. This starts with DHCP default IP settings and port information. The next screen is for Date & Time where the date format and time zone must be entered. NTP server details and DaylightSaving start and end times can be entered from additional page tabs.

The IP Camera page then identifies any Serage cameras connected to the four ports. Alternative or network connected cameras can also be manually added at this point. Next the Disk wizard show the current drive and its capacity and allows formatting to be undertaken once password confirmation is given.

After a final output resolution option, the wizard shows an information screen with a QR code for mobile connection.

Rear panel connectors are from left to right; 4-pin Din power in, 9-pin push-fit alarm & RS485, phono audio out, VGA, HDMI, USB x 2, RJ45 network, and 4 x RJ45 PoE enabled LAN connectors. Above the row of connectors is a power switch to the left and an e-SATA connection to the right. The 9-pin connector is arranged as 4 sensor inputs with ground, relay output, and 2 wire RS485. The PCB allows for an additional 4 sensor inputs and extra camera connection for the 8-channel version.

Audio output from suitable cameras can be taken from the phono socket to an amplifier or is available via the HDMI link.

This unit was fitted with a 1TB Toshiba S300 Surveillance drive, and while there is only space and connectivity for a single drive in this model, larger capacity drives of up to 8TB can be fitted.

Menu options

The NVR has an on-screen menu system accessible from mouse controlled autoappear icons at the bottom of the screen or alternatively the remote settings menu can be browser accessed from a network connected PC. The video output menu is tile based with the following eight options and sub-options:

Channel – Channel, Live, Image Control, Video Cover, Motion, PIR, Deterrence, Intelligence. Record – Encode, Record.

Alarm – Motion, PIR, Intelligent, PTZ Linkage, Exception, Alarm Schedule.

AI – Setup, Recognition, Alarm, Statistics.

Network – General, DDNS, Email, FTP, IP Filter, Platform Access.

Device – Disk, Cloud.

enabled by default for all inputs. There are a range of enhanced detection features, however some of these are camera dependant.

From the Channel option, the IP Channels window shows all connected cameras with their IP addresses, manufacturer name and model number, a PoE tab allows real-time power demand to be displayed for directly connected cameras.

Camera image settings and privacy zones can be managed for Serage cameras.

The AI detection options include Face, Human & Vehicle, Perimeter Intrusion, Line Crossing, and Crowd Density, and Queue Length detections, along with Cross Counting, and Heat Mapping. These are supported by individual schedules that can be assigned in half-hour blocks for each day and by detection type.

Operation

The NVR can be operated as a stand-alone device using a mouse and the HDMI monitor output. The IP address can be identified from the System / Information menu option for network browser connection.

With Serage cameras connected to the four PoE ports the cameras will be identified and connected. These ports use a specific address range from 10.10.25.100 with the first camera starting at address 10.10.25.151. The cameras use a simple password but are effectively isolated from the outside world by the NVR. The camera passwords can be changed but the NVR will expect the simple passwords to be in place if the power is cycled so any alternative password cameras will disappear from the system.

ONVIF compatible cameras can be used if network connected, the connection details are entered using the connection menu and images can be confirmed. The NVR’s on-screen menu has a limited special character set that does not include characters such as #, so it is important to ensure that any such cameras use a password that can be accessed using this onscreen keyboard.

The system is programmed to invoke a system reset every Sunday just after midnight and this was found to involve a full system reset at approximately 2 minutes after midnight with cameras being offline for approximately

one and a half minutes. Any PoE cameras that do not conform to the username and password defaults would cease recording from this point. This feature can be modified or turned off using the System / Maintenance /Auto Reboot function.

It was also found that the switch mode on the Setup / Channel menu must be set to “Manual” to ensure network connected cameras recovered from such a system reset. Very short timeouts are set for menu and browser connections, but these can be increased or made permanent if required. The Maintenance menu allows all system logs to be searched and exported in csv format.

Performance

In normal operation the HDMI output provides a clear display with the whole area dedicated to images. The Auto-hidden lower left hand icons access, Admin, Layout, Auto Sequence, Playback, Audio, Stream Switch and Preview Policy. The right-hand icons show or access, Connect Success, Light & Siren, Manual Record and System Information. Image quadrant icons auto-appear for, Start Manual Record, Manual Capture, Instant Playback, Zoom, Colour Settings, Stream Switch, Add Customized Tag, and AI.

Playback of images is straightforward with the transport controls beneath the replay window with a 24-hour timeline below. This can be zoomed in using the mouse when in browser mode or selected for 24, 2, 1 hour or 30 minutes on HDMI output. The timeline identifies alarm events allowing quick access to events. Replay speed is selectable from x1/8th up to x16. Options are available for selective searching of categories including General, Picture, Tag and AI. These are coupled with Date, Search type and Channel selection.

Conclusion

A very simple to install, flexible recording system with impressive detection capabilities when paired with Serage cameras. Easy setup and operation.

Technology trends and trust

This month PSI catches up with Uri Guterman, Head of Product & Marketing at Hanwha Techwin Europe, to find out what directions he thinks technology will move over the next twelve months with AI, computing at the edge, and the convergence of IoT growing in use while cybersecurity and the responsible use of technology become increasingly important

In last month’s edition we asked a host of industry experts to give us their predictions for what we would experience in the security and fire industry in 2023. These answers were mostly focused on technology predictions and how applications may change and improve as products become more intelligent and connected. To find out more about how this may play out, we talk to Uri Guterman of Hanwha Techwin Europe about his expectations for the way in which security installations will be improved in the year ahead and which benefits will be realised.

How is AI use evolving in security?

To date, traditional video applications have called on AI to reduce false alarms and allow the forensic search of video based on object attributes.

However, AI centred on metadata has become commonplace. End users are now looking for reprocessed information such as vehicle type statistics in a given time period or customers’ gender and age by different hours - rather than metadata that merely aggregate vehicle, gender or age data.

This is because users can gain greater insight and make better business decisions by accessing and managing their information

directly. In other words, information becomes most valuable when the user has the opportunity to use this data in the most efficient and relevant way to them.

This explains industry efforts to allow the efficient management of tremendous amounts of metadata collected by AI. Dashboards and reports which collect AI metadata and present these data as insights that invite the end user’s decision will grow in popularity.

Why will 2023 be the year of hybrid systems?

As cloud-based services have become more common, the number of providers has grown. Users can now easily integrate devices and systems using a cloud service and don’t often need to purchase additional servers and network infrastructure.

However, whether because of group security policy, network status or budget, many organisations prefer to stick with conventional on-premise solutions with dedicated servers and software.

In 2023 we can expect growth in so-called ‘hybrid’ systems that combine on-premise technology and the cloud. Users may opt for a combination of on-premise and cloud solutions – the former delivering on-site control, with the

cloud ensuring a reliable means of backing up critical data.

For example, Hanwha Techwin provides two solutions: Wisenet Wave VMS (on-premise) and Wave Sync (a cloud-based service). The latter allows thousands of on-premise systems to be remotely accessed, managed, and maintained.

How will Edge AI change security systems applications?

Edge-based AI technology has become popular among users for its ability to help detect and classify objects. It is now being enhanced with NPU (Neural Processing Unit) technology. This involves using an AI semiconductor which can learn independently and processes video, audio, text or images at the same time by imitating the way the human brain operates. In a video application, NPU enhances edge AI functions to include features such as behaviour analytics and abnormal behaviour detection.

In addition, with NPU, it’s also possible for users to train AI algorithms directly, according to their own criteria. Wise Detector, which we will be launching soon, can be taught to classify those object types of most interest to the user, whether these are shopping carts or a certain type of vehicle, or an event, for example.

What is the role of IoT in security?

Conventional physical security solutions such as video sur veillance, access control or intrusion detection are being expanded through integration with IoT (Internet of Things) devices, AI, and the cloud. For example, an IoT-enabled sensor that detects smoke, temperature,

humidity or motion can be integrated with an AI security system to deliver new insights following analysis in the cloud.

Systems manufacturers are expanding solutions by combining AI, the IoT, and the cloud with vision technology. Once, security solutions were focused on video monitoring by collecting video data and event alarm information and permitting the saving and searching of video. In future, various data will be collected by IoT sensors and cameras and analysed by AI at the edge, using past pattern analysis and comparison of a present situation to help predict future events as well as prevent incidents.

How are you improving trust in cybersecurity?

Awareness of cybersecurity needs to be raised as new business models and solutions are extended through technological integration with AI, the cloud, and the IoT. Hanwha Techwin has focused on video surveillance for over 30 years and, as IP Video has started presenting prominent threats, has continually emphasised the significance of cybersecurity.

For example, our Security Computer Emergency Response Team (S-CERT), undertakes security tests to ensure solutions remain fully protected from new and emerging threats. In addition, we have acquired official certifications such as UL CAP, FIPS and TTA to manage product security to the highest standards.

Recently, ‘Zero Trust’ has emerged as a new trend in cybersecurity. Zero trust indicates that every single device and application that is linked on a network has gone through a qualification process under the assumption that there is no automatic right for ‘trust’ between those devices and applications. We plan to continue reviewing and upgrading solutions from the perspective of ‘Zero Trust’, ensuring compliance with the Secure by Default scheme, for example.

The importance of cybersecurity cannot be overstated, especially since work that we have conducted across Europe shows that the responsible and ethical use of technology is a massive concern for end users.

Research that we commissioned, due to be unveiled in early 2023, reveals just how important the responsible use of video technology is for end users and why they are looking for manufacturers who put responsible use, cybersecurity and ethical considerations at the heart of what they do. On this basis, 2023 looks like being an exciting year!

The evolution of the network

Connectivity is the backbone of our lives. Whether at work, at home (or working from home) the network is a key component of modern living. How will the next twelve months play out for our systems and security?

Against the backdrop of a global energy crisis, challenging economic outlook and ongoing war in Ukraine, 2023 may have felt more foreboding than the advent of a new year usually would. In spite of this, over the next twelve months we are likely to see the technology industry forge ahead. So how will our working and home lives change due to the introduction of new systems and the evolution of established tech?

The PoE solution

Office and home office environments have become of equal importance in recent years, with at least one person in the household now likely to be working or studying from home during the week. In 2023, convenience and comfort of the home office will take a back seat to creating a smarter, cost- and energy-efficient environment and Power over Ethernet (PoE) can offer households a solution.

Power over Ethernet (PoE) is a technology for implementing wired Ethernet local area networks (LANs), enabling the electrical current needed to operate each device to be carried

www.psimagazine.co.uk

by Ethernet data cables instead of the usual wiring and electrical power cords. PoE carries both power and data over Ethernet cable, giving consumers the scope to power connected technologies in a more efficient and costeffective way. Take, for example, smart lighting in the home. Scheduling when the lights turn on and off can offer peace of mind if you’re on vacation, while automated switching off when no motion is detected in a room can save energy.

“As homes become smarter, the demands on connectivity increase and copper becomes a rarer commodity, PoE offers a long-term advantage,” says D-Link’s European Marketing Director, Neil Patel. “We anticipate the next evolution of PoE to be a push for higher power distribution through the wire, but before that happens, we expect more consumers will understand the value, convenience and scope that this streamlined, seamless technology has to offer.”

Supply catches up?

Microchip supply chain issues have been causing serious concerns for the entire technology industry in recent years, and for good reason.

A recent report by Accenture predicted that the supply chain challenges – including the microchip shortage – could result in a potential Eu920 billion cumulative loss to the gross domestic product (GDP) across the Eurozone by 2023, arising from the COVID-19 pandemic and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Lead times for some advanced chips needed for medical devices, telecommunications and cybersecurity systems has reportedly extended to approximately 52 weeks, compared to a previous average of 27 weeks, according to data from Everstream – and this doesn’t, of course, factor in product manufacturing time.

According to Neil Patel: “In addition to impacting the ability to produce and meet the demand for existing products, the lack of chip availability has meant a reduction in the capacity to develop new products. Older generations of chips that are used in the manufacture of white goods, for example, are made using equipment that has been used for several years. Innovative new components that run AI models and render graphics in the latest smartphones and computers, however, require cutting-edge technology to manufacture.

“While this all paints a challenging picture, things may be looking up. With the cost of chips being reduced and consumer spending cooling down for a myriad of reasons, supply may yet catch up with the demand in 2023.”

While there are immediate challenges to navigate, we are likely to see the pressure taken

off the microchip industry over the next twelve months.”

5G and the Wi-Fi utopia

Despite networks continuing to roll out 5G across Europe, a true 5G experience will still take some time as the infrastructure needed to fully support the service is yet to be deployed. With the demand for faster speeds and lower latencies increasing, we will see a rapid uptake of Wi-Fi 6 and 6E as SMBs and consumers alike seek to bridge the connectivity gap. Alongside this, anticipation is also mounting for Wi-Fi 7.

“Not only does Wi-Fi 7 promise drastically faster speeds and reduction in latency to radically improve the reliability and responsiveness of connected devices, the critical differentiator between Wi-Fi 7-enabled devices and legacy generations is the concurrent access to multiple wireless bands,” says Neil Patel. “Currently, devices usually choose one band to make transmissions, switching to another based on the availability of the connection. With Multi-Link Operation (MLO) however, Wi-Fi 7-enabled devices can simultaneously connect on two bands – making more efficient use of the available data to optimise the reliability of the connection and deliver ultra-low latencies.

“Unfortunately, we are some way away from a Wi-Fi utopia,” continues Neil. “It is nevertheless prudent for both businesses and consumers to start preparing to support the new era of connectivity by updating legacy systems and devices.”

As hybrid working practices become more entrenched, both businesses and workers will depend upon reliable connectivity, particularly

24
Despite networks continuing to roll out 5G across Europe, a true 5G experience will still take some time as the infrastructure needed to fully support the service is yet to be deployed

as cloud computing and mobile commerce become more ubiquitous.

The realities of security

With flexible and hybrid working models now the norm, more enterprises will need to address the security challenges of a remote workforce to take their digitalisation journey to the next level. As a result of this growing need to enhance protections, the adoption of Wi-Fi Protected Access 3 (WPA3) for wireless security is likely to accelerate, both in the home and in offices.

WPA3 is the latest generation in mainstream security for wireless networks. It will eventually take over from the current WPA2 to become the enhanced standard for wireless security for enterprises and end users from client to cloud.

But the reality is much more complex.

“People’s homes are filled with a combination of new and old devices that utilise encryption technologies provided by the Internet Service Provider (ISP)’s router. ISPs are not in the habit of upgrading routers on a regular basis, so many households still utilise what was given to them when they first took out their contract,” explains Neil Patel. “Older

routers aren’t able to support newer security protocols like WPA3, so the security outlook is – unsurprisingly – a pressing concern for enterprises.

“Over the next twelve months, we are likely to see businesses attempt to heighten existing security measures and technological infrastructures to better navigate the security challenges of employees working from home. It is prudent for this to include mandated security protocols to protect all devices connected to the network, whatever they may be used for. This can include keeping device operating systems up to date, understanding how much a home network is supporting, ensuring that home networks are running the latest and most sophisticated technology, setting up a completely separate intrastate for hybrid working and providing remote desktop access via dongles or VPNs,” concludes Neil. While there is no silver bullet when it comes to security, implementing clear guidelines and protocols will help ensure all members of an organisation are, at the very least, actively aware of how to keep their workplaces and homes safe.

The future of video surveillance

Continuing our look to the future of security and surveillance technology, we asked i-PRO to give us five trends we can expect to observe over the next twelve months. The company anticipates wide adoption of AI-based analytics, the evolution of open platform, cybersecurity and zero trust, expanded privacy protection, and continued supply chain challenges as outlined below.

Edge AI analytics become standard

2023 will see significant adoption of AI-based analytics in cameras and video management systems (VMS) as more manufacturers provide this feature within their standard camera lines. There are simply too many camera streams for humans to monitor effectively, so AIbased analytics will be a catalyst that enables security departments to do more with less. This evolution will drive a significant shift in stance for physical security by enabling organisations to become more proactive in response to realtime events instead of reacting to past events. In 2023 focus will shift from capturing video to

gathering data. The challenge will be in how effectively organisations are able to utilise this data not only for security, but also for crossdepartmental operations to increase efficiencies and revenue.

Processing at the edge will become more of the norm as the edge itself continues to get more powerful. New ways of harnessing distributed IoT power via containerisation technologies will continue to gain traction. Container technology, like Docker and Kubernetes, and the concept of shared resources across multiple devices will increase the speed of processing, improve analytic plug-in integration, and increase the speed of firmware updates and the deployment of new analytics.

Open AI platforms

As AI-based technologies continue to advance, the industry will continue to see specialised tools being created by expert developers with a focus on solving unique challenges. Open platforms provide best-in-class developers with access to large markets. Much like today’s successful app-based economy for computers and smartphones, this proven model will continue to take shape and offer integrators and end users the level of customisation they’ve come to expect from technology. The future of

the industry will be led by those who embrace open strategy as a best-in-class business practice. Creating flexible infrastructures for AI analytics developers to easily plug-into will further aid the democratisation of AI in several industries outside of security as well.

Privacy protection is key

Concern over personal privacy continues to grow worldwide with varying degrees of compliance required by industry. As an example, in 2023 the United States may follow the European example and enact a GDPR-like data privacy law at the federal level. According to the United Nations, more than 70% of countries worldwide have enacted data protection and privacy legislation. As governments try to appease citizens’ pleas for more rights over their data, these laws continue to evolve. Having the ability to obscure faces while maintaining a secondary protected data stream for evidentiary purposes will be a sought-after feature in the near future. As always, the industry must focus on making it easy for our customers and end users to comply with any new laws as well as GDPR. Prudent manufacturers are already acting to build data privacy into their processes as a best practice.

Cybersecurity

While security professionals are highly aware of the geo-political risks posed by untrustworthy state-owned manufacturers, the continued push to secure networks by IT professionals and network vendors will create even more cybersecurity awareness in 2023. We expect

“The physical security industry has the potential to step up and help companies do more with less by providing a wealth of data and insights not only to help protect people and assets, but also to help the bottom line”

more European governments to follow the USA NDAA example in 2023 that prevents authorities from installing Chinese state-owned surveillance systems in sensitive sites. Through a recent executive order, the US White House has mandated federal compliance with zero trust architecture and design by 2024. This will result in a huge federal shift in US policy for 2023 with a ripple effect for any businesses doing business in the US. We anticipate continued adoption of zero trust practices which validate every transaction between devices and people. Cybersecurity as a pillar of corporate responsibility will become an emerging trend as businesses seek to safeguard business continuity for their customers.

Supply chain issues

While supply chain issues for technology will persist into 2023, the hard-fought lessons are driving mandates to prevent the kinds of collapse that we’ve seen from occurring in the same way again. However, most proposed solutions are early in deployment and may not come online in the next 12 months. Manufacturers and integrators will need to carefully orchestrate and manage expectations in the channel. Look for manufacturers with trusted supply chains and a level of transparency on product availability and lead times for the best chance to fulfil contracts.

“2023 promises to be an impactful and transitional year for security professionals as businesses seek stability while also having less resources to work with,” said Norio Hitsuishi, Global Head of Product Management, i-PRO. “The physical security industry has the potential to step up and help companies do more with less by providing a wealth of data and insights not only to help protect people and assets, but also to help the bottom line.”

Skills sponsorship opportunity

Skills for Security, a national training provider for the security industry, is proud to announce a new sponsorship opportunity for companies looking to support and expand the skills pipeline in the security sector

for quality engineers has to increase. We need a strong training provider that can solve industry problems for the sector and serve its value chain.”

All profits from Skills for Security are invested back into the sector and the organisation is jointly owned by The Banks Foundation (TBF) and the British Security Industry Association (BSIA). Simon has also set up a special reserves fund within the BSIA that ring-fences the profits from Skills for Security so that they can be invested into good causes. The other half of the dividend goes to TBF, which spends all revenue on good causes and is closely aligned with Young Enterprise.

As a robust skills pipeline benefits all stakeholders in the sector, Skills for Security is calling upon companies to sponsor their work by making a financial contribution. Sponsorship starts at as little as £7,000 (Innovation Partner) and there are currently four tiers: Inspiration Partner, Impact Partner, and Media Partner. The Nineteen Group (The Security Event) is the first media partner announced on this exciting new journey.

The idea founded by Simon Banks, the Investor Chairman for Skills for Security and founder of CSL Group, the organisation aims to solve industry problems and help partners, manufacturers, employers, and other key stakeholders expand their reach, extend their options, and meet new audiences. Simon emphasises the importance of increasing the skills pipeline for the security sector and across all electrotechnical disciplines, stating, “Without young people entering our sector as a career of choice we will not have enough engineers installing and servicing systems and therefore manufacturers will have a limit placed on their equipment sales. The demand

Participation in this initiative can deliver a significant return on investment, far beyond the initial sponsorship fee. Sponsorship of Skills for Security can potentially address every stage of your marketing, as well as covering other areas of the business such as corporate social responsibility, equality, diversity & inclusion, human resources, and even product development.

To find out more about the sponsorship opportunities at Skills for Security, visit our website or contact info@skillsforsecurity.org.uk. We look forward to growing our list of sponsors, growing brand awareness, and solving problems as a sector.

Meet the installer

What would be a typical project for you?

Typical projects would be the design, installation and commissioning of a fire detection system and/or security systems, CCTV, access control and intruder alarm system.

This may be through one of several engineering or building services consultants, who we collaborate with to assist in designing the above systems for their clients or through one of several M&E or civil engineering organisations that we provide support to in delivering our services on their behalf for their existing or potential clients.

Do you have any ‘go to’ technology and manufacturers?

We have several manufacturers that we try and remain committed to. These are generally at the forefront of technology but also provide a great level of support to us from a sales and design perspective as well as engineering support.

We have partnership status with several manufacturers within our sectors, this assists with support for all project levels and also enables our company to be as cost competitive as possible, whilst maintaining a standard range of products to assist the engineering team in terms of installation, commissioning and ongoing maintenance support for our clients.

What is the best thing about working in this industry?

There are always opportunities within our industry. The UK market is estimated to be worth £1.4bn and is forecast to grow to £1.8bn by 2025.

Security life with Peter Farnell of Knight Fire & Security in Southport

Name: Peter Farnell

Job title: Managing Director

Time in security/fire: 35 years

Company: Knight Fire & Security

Location: Southport

Areas of expertise: Design installation and maintenance of fire detection and security systems

Certifications: NACOSS Gold and BAFE SP203-1

It is very much technology driven in all sectors, new and efficient methods of installing and commissioning solutions for clients are constantly evolving, and are very much driven by the manufacturers in terms of technology. All of this ensures that you remain focused, committed and as cost effective as possible in a very competitive industry.

Technological advances, such as analytics, means that the systems we install are being deployed for alternative uses other than surveillance, such as health and safety, movement tracking and general business processes.

Is third party certification beneficial?

Not only does third party certification demonstrate good practice, it ensures a robust management system within our organisation, demonstrating our commitment to staff development both for personal and product development.

It demonstrates that the business operates within the guidelines of the British Standards

together raising standards

within our industry, it offers reassurance to all existing and potential clients that we operate at a professional level that is audited both internally and externally, and for me is the single most important achievement within our business. It requires focus, dedication and commitment not only to achieve the required accreditations but also to maintain the certification.

Do you think there is an engineer skills shor tage? Any trouble recruiting?

Yes, unfortunately there is a skills shortage within our industry and there is a shortage in many industries at present. We have committed to training young potential engineers through use of the Government Levy scheme over the past few years, which is certainly and hopefully an investment for the future of the business in terms of maintaining trained staff. However for more experience engineering staff that are required, it’s currently difficult to find engineers that do not expect an employment package that is out of reach for most companies whilst still trying to remain competitive and profitable.

We have recently enrolled in The Career Transition Partnership Programme which provides resettlement services for those leaving the Royal Navy, Army, Royal Air Force and Marines, in the hope that we can find potential employees with transferrable skills, attitude and aptitude. We can then offer CPD for services within our industry.

Are there any common requests from customers that give you problems? Common requests that bring problems are generally existing or potential clients expecting a project to go ahead and extremely short notice, generally when the proposal was issued several months ago.

We are then expected to deliver the project imminently, and hold the costs from the original proposal. It’s quite often a decision that we have to make as to whether proceed, sometimes this can be not only be quite challenging in terms of delivering the project but also from a financial perspective given the frequency of manufactures price increases over the last 6 – 12 months.

It’s often a decision that needs to be thought out as opposed to a quick, and possible detrimental decision.

What is the security industry’s biggest myth?

I have been on the receiving end so many times of cer tain comments that our services are so easy to install and commission, “you just plug it in and that’s it” - tongue in cheek of course!

The British Standards and legislation surrounding our industry and the skills required

to conform to these standards, just like every other industry, are critical to the successful delivery of our services.

What impact has smart/home automation had on your business?

This has had very little impact on our business to date. If anything, there may be a slight upturn in requests for home CCTV systems that provide analytical features and benefits for the home user through manufacturers Apps whilst they are at work or away from home.

Also being able to control their home alarm systems through their mobile phones is very appealing to several generations. This in turn generates recurring revenue for our business in terms of App subscriptions.

What would make your job easier?

Communication is always the key to making anybody’s position in work a lot easier. Open, honest and transparent communication with your staff and clients so that everybody understands expectations on both sides.

If this happened in all situations it would make everyone’s job a little easier. I also think that good planning is so important for everyone, we are in a service industry and quite often have to react to situations and we all accept this, however there are many areas where better planning would improve everyone’s work lives and reduce stress.

What is your ultimate/fantasy electronic security/fire product?

A product that could remotely interrogate any system, for any problem whatsoever, anywhere in the UK and prevent an engineer having to attend within four hours. This would make life so much easier for us and for the client.

What advice would you give to a younger version of yourself?

My advice would be to be as diligent, hard working and reliable as you possibly can. I would also advise a younger self to listen very carefully to everything you hear. One of the greatest forms of communication is listening, I feel that these days, many people don’t listen and process what they hear.

Be honest and transparent in everything that you do and you will be rewarded.

Will England ever win the World Cup again?

Yes, I actually think that England will win the next World Cup. I may be the only person that thinks this, but I feel the next one is for England.

If you won £25K what would you do with it?

I would treat myself to a top spec Pinerallo road bike and spend a couple of weeks in the Italian Lakes with what was left.

ACCESS CONTROL

Over the next few pages we highlight some of the most recent new technologies announced for the improvement of access control around a site. Whether you are looking at kit for a multi-occupancy building or an app for visitor management there should be something of interest here for you

DDA compliant intercom for intuitive property security

Whether a property has 10, 100 or 1,000 apartments, the wireless PB-02 intercom is simple to both set up and use.

Smart access control needs no drilling or wiring

Ultion has partnered with Nuki to create the Ultion Nuki designed for safeguarding British doors.

Ultion Nuki has been engineered for UK homes where it can be retrofitted to existing doors or added to new ones. No drilling, wiring, or calibration are needed, while installation to operation reportedly takes five minutes.

Fitted with smart home technology, the lock is compatible with Ring, Amazon Alexa, Google Home, Apple HomeKit, IFTTT, AirBnB, the Nuki app, and smartwatches, all straight from the box, meaning it doesn’t need replacing if the smart home platform is switched. ultion-lock.co.uk

For tenants, the PB-02 intercom is DDA-compliant and easy to use, allowing users to control their own property access from their mobile phone. With individual call buttons and name displays, the push button intercom is intuitive, with a sleek, stylish design. Housing professionals can edit and delete tenant details quickly and easily, either on-site or on-the-go, without the need for site visits.

With no handsets, cables or mechanical keys, the PB-02 intercom is an intuitive solution for property access. intratone.uk.com

Wireless access solution for full lockdown control

SMARTair from Abloy UK offers users the ability to open, lock or maintain access to individual doors or zones to deal with an emergency. With a single command, doors equipped with SMARTair devices may be set to ‘Block Mode’ and can only be unlocked with a specific credential. This means that apart from designated staff, no one on-site can move around freely. Alternatively, the ‘Emergency Close’ function can lock all openings remotely and simultaneously, but an authorised credential may still unlock them.

As a third option, every device can be set to ‘Emergency Open’, which unlocks them all. This could provide fire services with instant access to a whole building or site, for example. abloy.com/gb/en

Upgrade allows bidirectional video for two-way comms

Smart lock for glass door installations

2N has added new functionality to its devices by upgrading its OS. The improvements the upgrade delivers are designed to support flexible working and ensure that 2N’s devices can be used by the hard of hearing.

The new 2N OS enables bidirectional video through the 2N IP Style intercom. This allows visitors to see the person they are talking to as well as vice versa, which is of particular value for buildings which decide to go without a dedicated reception. Bidirectional video is also a response to the growing demand for inclusivity in device functionality, as it allows the hard of hearing to communicate using sign language. 2n.com/en_GB/

2FA among enhancements for powerful entry-level Inception

The Inception integrated access and security system is an entry-level product, but it gets the same love and attention when it comes to updates and enhancements as enterprise products.

2FA - The latest version of Inception now supports two factor authentication, usually known as 2FA. This means operators have to present their usual name and password, as well as an additional time-based one-time passcode (TOTP).

Dynamic user imports - Inception can also automatically import new user data from CSV files in external systems, such as booking or payroll. These are uploaded to the Inception controller, while user credentials can also be manually added, updated or cancelled based on existing information in another system.

Ethernet bridge - The bridge module provides a convenient interface for connecting RS-485 LAN modules to an Integriti or Inception controller via a standard TCP/IP network.

Fleet of mobile CCTV cameras part of upgrade for council

Revader Security was chosen by North to provide a fleet of mobile CCTV cameras as part of their contract to upgrade Falkirk Council’s public space CCTV and control room.

The cameras can be installed in most locations and can be moved to target crime hotspots and areas of anti-social behaviour, acting as a deterrent and enabling the police to secure prosecutions.

The redeployable CCTV cameras combine camera, recording, storage and wireless video transmission in a single unit. They can operate from a variety of power sources, including mains and battery. Falkirk Council also utilises a fleet of Revader’s rechargeable mobile battery units to provide supplementary power alongside daylight saving lamp posts.

Falkirk Council stated that the cameras have enabled the replacement of “grainy images of the past with those that provide pinpoint accuracy”. Council teams worked with North and Police Scotland to identify where the mobile cameras should be placed.

The Council stated: “By investing in this CCTV technology, the Council will not only be able to help reduce crime and anti-social behaviour, but

New access control system

fitted at Waddesdon Manor

Opened to the public in 1959, Waddesdon Manor is managed by the Rothschild Foundation. A new access control system was required that could not only secure storerooms and artwork and assets, but also keep members of the public away from restricted areas.

Keys in the existing locking system were badly worn, and the security and facilities management wanted to upgrade to a proven state of the art solution that provided control of key management and more information such as audit trails.

The eCLIQ solution from Abloy was specified as the retrofit option. By switching to eCLIQ, staff would retain their own key with individual permissions, rather than having to share keys from the previous mechanical master key system.

This meant Waddesdon could implement a fully traceable electromechanical key hierarchy system, with each department given different access rights based on their requirements. The solution required no wiring, making the installation simple and maintaining the original appearance.

Abloy and Mid-Beds Locksmiths specified a new bespoke solution, issuing around 20 keys

in the future also use the cameras to support traffic management by providing real-time updates on traffic congestion via social media, increase public safety at major events, from festivals to football matches [and] support tourism”.

Cecil Meiklejohn, Leader of Falkirk Council, said she had been impressed by the speed at which the cameras had been rolled out, adding: “By making this investment in the CCTV service, we continue to support the police in the fight against crime and make our position clear - we will not tolerate anti-social behaviour.”

This investment was part of Falkirk Council’s £1m investment in CCTV, including an aspiration to have all alarm and monitoring systems integrated and controlled from a central location to help keep local people safe and reduce costs.

and 35 cylinders for stage one, with a view to expanding the system with further upgrades in the future.

The Waddesdon security team explained: “All of our access is now controlled by the admin onsite, and no one can give the wrong access to the wrong person – it just can’t happen. It’s a busy environment so this has saved significant admin time handing out keys.

“Instead of having to collect a bunch of 30 keys, staff have just one. Now people come to work in the morning, enter their key and are automatically given their access rights for 24 hours.”

biggest challenges presented to large leisure complexes, to enable balancing a welcoming and open environment that doesn’t compromise on the safety or security of guests.

Main contractors Morgan Sindall worked with Secur-It from initial design processes to incorporate Comelit-PAC’s fire safety solutions. This included integrating the fire safety with the access control, turnstile and security services alongside the PA system.

Arnaud Marosi, Secur It Commercial Director added: “By specifying Comelit-PAC at The Marina Centre, we could present a fire system that balances offering a high performance life safety solution, without interfering with the natural flow of a busy leisure centre.

Fire safety installed at multimillion pound leisure complex

A new multi-million pound leisure centre owned by Great Yarmouth Borough Council is fire safe, thanks to a partnership approach with Secur-It specifying Comelit-PAC’s integrated solution.

The new £26m Marina Centre leisure complex on Great Yarmouth’s seafront, was designed to replace the old 1980s built centre. With work starting in January 2021, it reopened in August 2022.

Operated by Freedom Leisure, the new facility boasts a six-lane swimming pool, learner pool and aqua play area with flumes, a 120-station gym, a four court sports hall, 10m indoor climbing zone, three studios and community spaces.

Freedom Leisure Area Manager Martin Marsh says: “The opening of our new centre is a very exciting chapter for Great Yarmouth, and a significant investment that we are thrilled to present to our guests. Whilst its core objective is to offer the latest and greatest facilities; it’s integral that it can be enjoyed in a fire safe and secure environment.

“We worked in partnership with the main contractors, right from the early stages of the design, and specification of fire safety was a key priority. The team could offer advice, recommendations and practical support on how and where to install measures to blend with their surroundings, without affecting the experience for our staff and guests.”

Fire safety is one of the

“We were able to integrate seamlessly with the security and PA system to enable staff to speed up response time and advise guests about the safest emergency route. We could also install around the facilities without impacting on look or feel. The result is a wonderful example of a new complex that is already making a big impact on its community, secure in the knowledge it’s doing so with all due care and attention to fire safety.”

In total, for the Marina Leisure Centre complex, the 20 zone fire safety system specified from Comelit-PAC included a 4 loop addressable panel, a repeater and 383 devices which included detectors, call points, sounders and visual alarm devices.

Mandy Bowden, Comelit-PAC Fire Manager concluded: “By considering the fire detection and alarm systems early in the programme of works, we could specify a tailor made, integrated and inclusive solution without impacting on its function, aesthetics or appearance. The result once installed is so much more than a safe and secure leisure centre, but also a fantastic facility for residents’ health and wellbeing, and for the visitors to Great Yarmouth to enjoy.”

normalise the climate.

The decision was made to protect the greenhouses with Ajax devices and integrate them into the specialised farm environmental monitoring system to provide active climate control with automated actions.

Opening detectors, motion detectors and street sirens were used to protect the greenhouses from intrusion. 38 kits of Ajax devices were used to protect 38 greenhouses: Hub, MotionProtect, DoorProtect, and StreetSiren.

The DoorProtect opening detectors was installed on the entrance doors of the greenhouses. The detector identifies the first signs of intrusion, and the farm security team is immediately notified. It detects opening with the help of a reed switch, which works together with a magnet and reacts to magnetic field changes.

Protecting greenhouses and preserving the crop

At a farm in the Turkish city of Bolu, mushrooms are cultivated in grow tents with an area of 120 sq m each, and the total area of the farm is 4,560 sq m. There are 38 such greenhouses. The temperature outside the greenhouses varies throughout the year, from -9°C in winter to +31°C in summer. But in hermetic greenhouses, a stable temperature and humidity level is maintained.

It was necessary to provide physical protection of the greenhouses from intrusion, to build a notification system and to ensure that the greenhouse climate does not deviate from optimal performance.

The main goal was to protect the object and ensure that farm security services must be immediately notified of any hint of unwanted intrusion.

The second important goal was to provide action automation and a notification system. On a mushroom farm, continuously monitoring climate indicators in the greenhouses is extremely important because even a slight deviation can ruin the harvest.

The problem is that specialised agricultural detectors do not instantly notify about indicator deviation from the norm. The technical service of the farm does not receive notifications centrally, and the system does not automate actions to

Next, behind the first door to the greenhouse, a MotionProtect motion detector is waiting for the intruder to confirm the intrusion. It is attached to the wall opposite the entrance door and immediately notifies the farm security team when it detects the first signs of movement.

The detector is located in the part of the greenhouse that is not isolated from the outside temperature. Still, MotionProtect detects movement without any errors, even in temperatures from -10°C to +40°C. It’s enough for the climate of Bolu. The detector automatically adjusts the sensor to detect motion in heat and cold accurately.

Thus, the MotionProtect motion detector backs up the DoorProtect opening detector. It is common practice for one detector to verify the triggering of another detector to eliminate false alarms. On the farm, notifications are turned on when each of the detectors is triggered. Even if an intruder enters the greenhouse not through the door, they will not hide from the motion detector.

Loud StreetSiren is activated in case of alarm. The siren has the IP54 enclosure protection class and operates in temperatures from -25°C to +50°C.

In addition, guards receive notifications on their smartphones via the Ajax Security System mobile app for iOS and Android. They immediately see which detector has been triggered and which greenhouse should be checked.

Hub controls the operation of connected devices. The control panel is installed in a radiotransparent plastic box inside the greenhouse. It communicates with devices via the Jeweller radio protocol, collects encrypted information about detector operation, and transfers the entire system to backup frequencies and channels in case of jamming.
