he Protect Duty, also known to many as ‘Martyn’s Law’, refers to a piece of proposed legislation which concerns the protective and preparatory measures that should be considered to make the public safer at publicly accessible locations. There is currently no legislative requirement for organisations or venues to consider or employ security measures at the vast majority of public places.

According to the website, www.gov.uk, 2,755 responses were received from a variety of organisations, sectors and campaigners, with the majority supporting the government’s proposals to introduce stronger measures, including a legal requirement for some public places to ensure preparedness for and protection from terrorist attacks.

The consultation sought views from private and public sector partners on a requirement for certain publicly accessible locations to implement security measures, without placing undue burden on smaller businesses. 7 in 10 respondents agreed that those responsible for publicly accessible locations should take appropriate and proportionate measures to protect the public from attacks including ensuring staff were trained appropriately.

There was also agreement that venue capacity should determine when the duty applies. Most felt that larger organisations should be taking proportionate action to ensure people are protected. There was an understanding that small and medium sized enterprises should not face the same requirements as larger venues and that all measures should be proportionate to the size of each organisation.

The duty of care for visitors to each venue is therefore likely to move beyond the original security requirements of crime prevention and basic safety guidelines to move into what most would see as ‘worst case scenario’ planning. Risk assessments take into account a number of events (fire, flood etc) but the addition of potential terrorist attack is much harder to plan for, but it is not impossible. As Steven Kenny of Axis said: “Making the right investments will ensure compliance with the Duty and deliver the highest levels of physical security protection.”

The consultation continues for now but issues such as the need for accountability, such as roles and responsibilities will no doubt require some attention as well as the question of funding any new technology and training required as a result of the new rules. Whatever the conclusion, security installers will be vital in the application stage of the legislation.

INDUSTRY NEWS Made Smarter reaches business milestone with GJD GJD has helped Made Smarter’s technology adoption programme mark a major milestone.

Three years on from its launch, the government-funded initiative helping SMEs drive growth and decarbonise through digitalisation, has now supported its 200th business. Joining the manufacturers starting their journey to use technology to benefit their business, their bottom line and the environment is GJD Manufacturing, based in Heywood.

Distributor Midwich announces DVS acquisition

• Nimans has confirmed a new distribution agreement with IDIS. The deal will support customers with rapid in-stock availability of complete, end-to-end video solutions.

• Following a decision of its Board, Euralarm has welcomed its newest member, Kidde Fire Protection. The company will join the Extinguishing Section of Euralarm.

AV distributor Midwich has acquired a majority stake in Cooper Projects, the parent company of DVS, the distributor of security products.

Based in Cardiff, DVS was founded in 2003 as a distributor of CCTV and associated video recording technologies, in which it has developed a strong market reputation working primarily with Hikvision. In recent years, DVS has begun to diversify its portfolio to include complementary technologies, such as access control, intercom, and intruder detection.

The existing management team of Tim Goodson (Managing Director), Gavin Dunleavy (Commercial Director) and David Davies (Chief Technology Officer) will maintain a stake in the business and will work with Midwich to grow the business over the coming years.

Stephen Fenby, Midwich Group Managing Director, commented: “The acquisition of DVS gives Midwich access to a significant segment of the security market in which we currently have little presence, and which is expected to grow at around 8% per annum for the next five years. The knowledge and support of the experienced DVS team should help realise new opportunities for our customers in an

The interview that gets the facts from the top This month Simon Banks talks to John Piggott, Managing Director at Atlas Fire & Security.

Amthal completes the acquisition of Integrated Protection Maintenance (IPMSL) Amthal has completed its acquisition of majority shares in Integrated Protection Maintenance Services (IPMSL) a Midlands based provider of fire safety and security solutions.

The shares have been acquired by Amthal as part of a combined growth initiative, presented to ensure the joint venture, fire safety and security specialist can offer solutions across a greater coverage of the UK. With over 20 years combined experience, IPMSL has a significant presence in the Midlands, offering bespoke commercial fire safety and security systems to facility manager and block management companies looking for compliant design, installation, maintenance and monitoring services.

Jamie Allam, CEO at Amthal says that the new partnership will integrate the specialist combined services of both companies to offer services to more customers across the UK: “The joining of IPMSL to Amthal along with the service portfolio will contribute significantly to our future scaling of the combined business.”

Mayflex and Wavestore in exclusive UK deal Mayflex has announced an exclusive agreement to be the sole distributor for Wavestore VMS solutions in the UK. Mayflex has distributed Wavestore for many years and the relationship has now moved on to become an exclusive partnership.

Can you tell me a bit more about your career in the sector?

I’ve been in the intruder alarm industry since 1982, so I have extensive industry experience – starting well before we founded Atlas. I now work alongside my family to provide specialist security advice to our growing portfolio of customers. We are NSI NACOSS Gold accredited, as well as being a BAFE SP203 and NSI Fire Gold approved installer.

You recently had first-hand experience in the UK’s All IP project. Can you tell me a little more about this?

In the first week of October 2021, I received a letter from BT to advise that they would be upgrading my home landline to the new digital service.

I was also aware that my local exchange was going into its ‘stop-sell’ phase from 13th October, meaning that any changes to my service would automatically move to IP as older options would no longer be available.

I then received an email from BT on the 19th of October – 6 days after the ‘stop-sell’ phase began – to advise me that the upgrade to my service would happen just 7 days later, on 26th October. Sure enough, this all went ahead as planned, and from this date, my PSTN service was switched off and replaced with IP. Luckily, I was aware of the implications of this switch and was able to plan for my alarm system to be upgraded. But many end-users will not be aware that this change impacts their alarm system and may not notify their installation company ahead of the change. This could cause lots of issues for Installers, with emergency callouts requested as the system goes into fail.

What would your advice be to other businesses?

Having now seen for myself how home and business owners will be impacted by these changes, we are proactively encouraging all our customers to have their systems upgraded. This futureproofs their system and allows us to provide them with a better service and avoids any potential issues caused by the All IP switchover.

My advice to my peers in the industry would be to act now to avoid any disruptions to your business. Although the ultimate closure is in 2025, the switchovers are happening right now with many millions of lines already completed! It’s essential to make sure your customers’ alarm signalling is futureproofed after the PSTN closure.

What other challenges do Installers face in 2022?

The two other major challenges our industry must deal with this year are the availability of products and the lack of skilled engineers we need to install them. We are well aware of component shortages impacting manufacturers across the sector and we are proactively engaging with my supplier partners to ensure we have awareness of any stock issues. To add to this, skilled engineers are in high demand. We are always looking to upskill our workforce and bring new talent into the business to complement the more experienced team members.

New system aimed at reducing unwanted alarms Business Insight 3 and Davantis have released a new product aimed at improving intruder detection while reducing the number of false alarms from security systems.

The product, called DFUSION, is exclusively available in the UK via Bi3 and uses AI to enhance Davantis’ machine learning algorithm.

According to the promotional data, during tests it has been shown to reduce the number of false alarms by as much as 90%.

The technology has also secured approval from the Centre for the Protection of National Infrastructure (CPNI). This means that it can be used as the only form of perimeter detection for everything from private land to industrial sites and critical infrastructures. It has also received the UK police’s Secure by Design (SBD) accreditation.

As proprietary technology, DFUSION is compatible with all hardware brands and camera models and it analyses the video stream constantly and instantly makes a decision, using a combined machine learning and artificial intelligence algorithm, on whether the movement is a person, vehicle or false alarm. It can work in the most challenging of environments with unprecedented reduction in false activations and is able to detect small moving objects which could be obscured at short, medium, and long distances.

up the system before mains power is supplied but a “Kick-start” link on the PCB can be briefly shorted to configure the system without mains power.

The keypad is connected to the panel via a 4way connector for 0v, 12v, A & B for its power and serial communication. Up to three additional keypads can be added using either bus or star wiring configurations.

Alarm devices are attached to the PCB using a two-wire alarm format plus power from the 12v auxiliary outputs.

A component pack within the housing contains EOL (End Of Line) resistors (10 x 2.2kΩ and 10 x 4.7kΩ), the PCB mounting pillar and screw, 3 x PCB links, keypad cover screws, a wall plug & screw and a cable tie for power lead strain relief.

The single screw and wall-plug is for securing the keypad’s tamper block fixing.

An optional communicator is available that can be mounted beneath the main PCB.

he i-on Compact Security System is a Grade 2 wired intrusion detection panel with 10 zones and up to 10 users and 4 keypads. It is promoted as being suitable for simple, entry-level burglar alarm systems to protect homes and small commercial installations. This i-on 10-KP version includes an integral proximity reader. The panel size is 239mm (h) x 250mm (w) x 90mm (d) with a weight of 2.8 kg without the battery.

Getting started The panel has two crosshead screws holding the cover in place. Once this is removed the keypad can be found secured beneath the panel’s circuit board. Once this is removed, a fourth mounting pillar must be fitted to support the PCB. Mains power connection is made using a three-way fused terminal block at the top left of the chassis.

On the model tested, the power connection detail was partially obscured by the connector block but is clearly shown in the installation instructions.

Space is available within the chassis for a 12v 7Ah battery (not supplied). This does not power

At first power-up the 2 line by 20 character LCD display takes the operator through a series of initial configuration setup options. Firstly, to set the addresses of any keypads connected press the A and Tick buttons together for around three seconds till the keypad bleeps. Next the wired Zone type is entered; the default is for 2-wire FSL (Fully Supervised Loop) 2k2/4k7. Alternative EOL and Alarm resistor values of 1k0/1k0, 2k2/2k2 or 4k7/4k7 can be selected. The next option is for the user code length as either 4 or 6 digits after which the Installer then User codes are entered.

The screen will then display the system ident and currently stored Time & Date unless the main panel is still open, where an “Installer Exit Faults” message is then displayed.

The Installer Menu tree consists of: • Detectors / Devices: management of detectors and bus devices.

• Outputs: PCB wired outputs and Plug-by (comms) output allocation.

• Settings Options: Entry & Exit conditions and alarm response.

• System Options: User settings, Restore defaults, Installer & Confirmation options, hardware, Date & Time.

• Communications: Line failure response & delay timing.

• Test: Sirens & Sounders, Keypads, Walk-test, Zone resistance & Status, Outputs.

A straightforward and engineer friendly grade 2 wired alarm system with a wide range of configuration options and simplicity of installation

• View Log: All events, Mandatory and Nonmandatory events.

• About: Naming and Software versions for Control and keypads.

The default settings comply with the requirements of EN50131-1 so any configuration changes must take into account the relevant standards and Codes of Practice required or in force.

The Proximity reader function can be programmed to allow setting and un-setting of the system.

A, B, C, D buttons on the keypad can be programmed for full and part setting of the system however this would not be EN50131 compliant.

A holdup alarm can be triggered using two adjacent HUA buttons on the keypad, this function is disabled by default.

Hardware Control Unit – The control unit chassis is of robust steel construction. The PCB and its connections are clearly identified and accessible.

The rear plate has multiple cable access holes. To the left of the PCB are the Zone connectors, these are indicated as Z0 to Z9 with pairs sharing a common return. At the bottom of the board are a four-way connector providing 2 Aux 12v supplies for devices, a 6-way for the sounder and loudspeaker if used, then a 4-way for the keypad bus. To the right of the board is a 12 pole connector designated the Plug-by communicator port, this provides 8 outputs, a Line Fail input, a Remote Reset input and 12 volt out to the optional communicator.

PIR detector – the supplied XCELWPT PIR Grade 2 wired pet tolerant (up to 20kg) detector has a maximum range of 9 metres. Its 6-way connector carries 9 – 16v DC input, Tamper and Alarm. Two on-board links enable the LED and High/ Medium/ Reduced sensitivity adjustment. The rear panel allows for flat wall or corner mounting and has multiple cable entry knockouts. There is plenty of room for cable dressing and fitting EOL resistors.

External Sounder – the SDR-WEXT Grade 2 wired siren is designed to work with the i-on 10 and a range of third-party control units. Its IP65 rated enclosure has LED illumination that alternates to identify it is powered (though these can be inhibited) and will strobe on activated alarm. A Nickel Metal Hydride backup battery pack is included with an anticipated life of 5 years. The siren is specified as 100dB(A) and was measured at 107.4dB(A). A cut-off timer link allows the duration to be set to 5 seconds, 3 minutes or 15 minutes. All the connections are clearly laid out and accessible with legible connection detail.

Performance The keypad has a clearly laid out set of buttons with a four-arrow navigator button for working through the menu options. Any button activates the display backlight, and all the buttons are then illuminated.

The buttons all have a very positive feel, and an audible click is generated when pressed. This click volume can be varied or turned off using a volume potentiometer within the keypad, though this will also silence the exit tone, but the keypad alarm will still sound if an alarm is triggered.

The system provides very simple user operation and flexible engineer configuration.

Conclusion A straightforward and engineer friendly grade 2 wired alarm system with a wide range of configuration options and simplicity of installation. Good documentation is supplied with the product.

agna Alert amplifiers available from QED have all the same features as a normal 100V line amplifier but with the added feature of an alarm input to trigger any MP3 file that has been downloaded to the amplifiers internal memory. The Alert series amplifiers are aimed at both retail and industrial applications.

Getting started The product comes with a user manual that gives adequate guidance on: • The safety of the product • Front and Rear description of input connections, relays and outputs • Wiring diagrams for multiple types of speakers connected to the unit • Unit operation • Connection diagrams • Alarm triggering to activate the pre-recorded message that can be attached to the device.

One thing should be noted; little additional information is available for this product online, only copies of the provided user manual from resellers.

If the unit is to be used as a simple AV amplifier, connected to FM radio and used to make announcements, then following the user manual will provide a simple plug and play setup. However this system can also be connected to third party systems to provide alert/alarm triggering in the event of the onboard contacts being shorted. If this is to be done, the user will

require to set up priority using the dipswitches so that the amplifier knows to silence the other connected channels.

Performance This compact public address unit provides a powerful 60w output and can be configured for multiple different speaker types dependant on its use.

The sound quality of the unit is great, even when pushing a pre-recorded message. This was tested with connection to CCTV, intruder and fire alarm systems to test the response of the alarm triggering.

The build quality of the unit is great, a very sturdy and well put together piece of equipment.

All the connections and dials on the unit are reliable and able to take abuse, which is great if this unit is to be used as part of a busy integrated system.

Conclusion This unit would be suited for a typical office environment where a simple AV solution would be required. But this device provides an “all-inone” PA solution when connected to 3rd party security systems.

This would make a great addition to: • An external intrusion system to trigger an alert and an announcement over external PA system in the event of detection • CCTV systems allowing for an operator to communicate with site over the wired or wireless MIC inputs • Disabled WC alarms providing audible announcement in the event an alarm is triggered, requesting attendance from staff.

Please be aware that this should only be used for supplementary use, and should not be connected to a fire alarm system to provide a means of raising the alarm.

The KL1000 G3 NetCode can be set up to provide either short or long-term access for users and includes all the features introduced with the KL1000 G3 – including a key override function, easy access to the battery compartment and the option to include Slam Latch for fast ‘push shut’ closure.

The ability to have the lock latched open upon entry of the code and stay latched open until the code is re-entered, or have the lock perform as most locks do, re lock after the code is entered is useful. The choice between the two is a good feature of this product.

CONS: • When programming the codes in with the LED indication, the LEDs can time out and sometimes it is not clear on what stage of the programming you were at

Codelocks – Kitlock KL1000 G3 Netcode instructions step by step guide is very clear and if followed correctly, will allow for an easy installation. The programming seems to be quite technical for such a basic lock.

There are lots of different types of codes, master, sub master, technician and user codes that operate differently. Whilst these are good features, programming the codes into the lock seemed like it could have been made easier, as the LEDs are used to guide you through the programming, but seem to time out and not work as suggested each time.

Performance The lock performs exactly as it supposed to. It locks the door and unlocks the door when required.

No problems in its performance when testing. Sits nice and flush and because of the extra washers, there is no movement on the door when it is locked.

Once programmed in, the NetCode function works perfectly.

Access codes sent via text or email gave access on specified dates and times for the allocated period.

Conclusion The build quality of the lock is very good; a solid stainless-steel unit with a very smooth finish. It looks very modern and smart and is quite robust. The buttons are of good quality and from testing the lock, do not seem to stick or seem like they will over time as some other locks on the market do. The indicating LEDs are very bright and are set back into the lock for protection. A good build quality overall.

The lock has been tested on internal office doors, outhouse door and a shed door, as well as the lockers for which it is intended so might be useful for multiple applications.

Uniview – IPC2325EBR5-DPZ Promoted as a 5MP WDR Starlight Varifocal IP67 network bullet camera, the unit is based on a 1/ 2.7” sensor with a 2.7 to 13.5mm auto-focus motorized zoom lens giving a horizontal angle of view from 93.28° to 28.56°.

Review: A versatile solidly built external bullet camera with a wide range of configuration settings. The security settings allow the camera to be suitably locked-down but the lack of a forced “strong” password is a concern; perhaps a future firmware update will remedy this. Score: 8/10

3xLogic – VX-VT-56 The 3xLogic VX-VT-56 is an IP66 bullet style external thermal camera with a 56° horizontal field of view. It has motion detection including video content analysis and temperature alarm capabilities built in.

Review: A very compact thermal bullet camera that is straightforward to install and set up. t is capable of detecting scene intrusion and creating alarms regardless of light levels and weather conditions. A variety of specialist analytics is included. Score: 8/10

Hikvision – ColorVu DS-2CD2087G2-LU This IP67, 8MP bullet camera is from the Hikvision ColorVu range. It is designed for 24-hour colour imagery with warm-white visible LED illumination support for zero light scenes. A wide 2.8mm lens version is standard with 4mm and 6mm options.

Review: An extremely sensitive 8MP high-resolution camera with advanced detection capabilities, 24-hour colour capability and a wide range of security features. Score: 9/10

Tyco – Illustra Multi Sensor Dome The Illustra Flex multi-sensor camera provides four 4MP camera views from a single location over a single network cable using just one IP address. The IP66 cameras can be flexibly positioned within the housing for full 360° coverage.

Review: An interesting approach to the provision of multi-camera highly detailed wide-angle views from a single housing with straightforward installation and configuration. Score: 8/10

Hanwha Techwin – Wisenet XNV8081RE The XNV-8081RE is from the Wisenet X range and incorporates a PoE extender capability to simplify cabling infrastructure when installing a second camera within 80 metres of an existing position. The dome is based on a 1/2.8” 5MP CMOS sensor with a stated 0.07 Lux colour sensitivity and IR LED monochrome illumination.

Review: A very installer friendly ONVIF compliant external dome camera with ease of set-up and an ability to simplify network cabling when retrofitting for additional cameras, installing two cameras to a single location or when needing to install an adjacent PoE device such as lighting or PIR detection. Score: 9.5/10

Dahua – TiOC 2.0 The DH-IPC-HDW3549H-AS-PV-S3 is a 5MP full-colour fixed-focal eyeball WizSense network camera. It is the latest in the company’s TiOC (three- in-one camera) line which integrates 24/7 full-colour monitoring, active deterrence and AI into one solution.

Review: A very capable Eyeball style dome that has a wide range of features to help detect and deter intruders, with extensive cyber security settings. When used with the Dahua Smart NVR, the camera supports intelligent search capabilities. Score: 8.5/10

Milesight – MS-C5375-EPC This IP67 and IK10 rated motorized 5MP mini dome boasts a number of features including AI analytics, Smart IR, which combines high beam and low beam to adjust IR intensity to suit different lighting conditions, plus functions such as HLC (highlight compensation) and defog.

Review: The build quality is superb, the camera is well made. There are real signs of quality with this camera that include a solid casing throughout, connection points do not flex or move and all pivot points on the camera and lens move fluidly and are not flimsy. Score: 7.5/10

Hikvision – AX Pro The AX Pro can be purchased as a kit or individual components.

The reviewed system was a DS-PWA96-Kit1-WE kit with the seven parts as listed. It is a wireless Grade 2 alarm system that can be used stand-alone or integrated into a management system.

Additional modules are available to link to home automation products and systems. The DS-PWA96-M-WE panel supports up to 32 areas and 96 zones.

Review: A compact wireless alarm system with extended battery duration and flexible remote management. The product is well suited to central monitoring with a range of protocols supported. A reasonably wide and increasing range of detector types with scope for integration with home-automation systems. Score: 8.5/10

Pyronix – MCEXTERNAL-WE This tamperproof and weatherproof contact extends perimeter protection applications to securing sheds, garages, gates etc, with remote voice push notification alerts via the smart device apps, HomeControl2.0 and ProControl+. Featuring an IP66 rating, this discreet and versatile Grade 2 device is described as easy to fit and calibrate.

Review: The product is constructed very well. The casing is made of a hard polycarbonate with a deep grey (anthracite) finish which makes the door contact look great. The overall performance of the product did not disappoint during testing as it managed to maintain a high signal strength at all times as well as being very responsive. Score: 8.5/10

Ajax – MotionCam Outdoor The Ajax MotionCam Outdoor is an IP 55 rated combined external PIR sensor with inbuilt capture camera for use with the latest Ajax Hubs that support visual verification. The detector has settings for the image resolution and number of pictures sent on alarm. After dark the unit has two high-intensity infrared LEDs to provide illumination for the camera’s monochrome mode.

Review: A very simple to install and manage, extended battery life external PIR detector for Ajax based Hub 2 systems, with the advantage of visual verification. Score: 9/10

2N – IP Verso Intercom The door unit is IP54 rated, with IK08 impact rating (IK07 for display). It is produced in modules that can be extended to allow for numeric entry keypads, card readers and button arrays. It supports voice and video communication calls to mobile phones and tablets. The indoor viewer (right) is a 7” 1024 x 600 pixel touch screen device.

Review: A flexible system with great potential for mobile, remote, or central monitoring station use. It is potentially let down by its lack of worked examples for some of the commissioning settings, but manufacturer support should help overcome this. Score: 7.5/10

CSL – MiniAir 2 MiniAir 2 is a single-path signalling solution that utilises a 4G/LTE-M path to signal an alarm from a protected premises to an ARC. It comes with a standby SIM as a backup to safeguard the system, if the active SIM fails.

Review: The product overall is great. It is a perfect solution to the PSTN switch over/off as it means that existing systems that rely solely on PSTN signalling can continue to do so without the expense of upgrading the customers control equipment. Score: 9/10

Review: The ease of connection with a range of switchable, built-in EOL resistor values simplifies the installation process. The potential for device branding will likely be appealing to independent installers. Score: 9/10

Testifire – 1000-001 smoke & heat test kit This unit can test smoke detectors, heat detectors and multi-criteria smoke and heat detectors.

The unit is designed for fire maintenance professionals who are focussed on ultimate efficiency as the No Climb functionality of the system enables simplified testing.

Review: The tester is light and portable and is also compatible with the existing no climb solo poles, so this could be a great addition or upgrade to your existing testing devices. Score: 9.0/10

Videoloft – Cloud Adapter 8 The Videoloft Cloud Adapter 8 is an eight channel bridging device which equips new and legacy video surveillance systems with Videoloft’s offsite cloud video solution.

Review: It is a very cost effective solution for those looking to update existing systems, upgrade the overall storage solution, or wanting to connect independent cameras to a recording and viewing platform without the need for a recorder or controller. Score: 8.5/10

barox – RY-LPITE-802GBTME The barox RY-LPITE-802GBTME is a 10-port managed switch with features beneficial to PoE supplied surveillance camera systems. It supports Layer 2 & 3 switching and can be configured for diverse route, ring redundant networks. With 8 Gigabit PoE++ ports and a 24Gb/s backplane, the switch can support high bandwidth video networks.

Review: A very powerful enterprise level command set DIN rail mountable switch with a wide range of security features and support for monitoring and reporting surveillance systems operation. Score: 9/10

HKC – RF-Touch The RF-Touch wireless intruder keypad is among the latest additions to the SecureWave product line. The keypad is produced in either a black or white finish and it can be supplied with optional replacement facia trims in Black, White, Chrome and Grey. Review: With an anticipated battery life of over three years in normal operation this is a very stylish compact grade 2 wireless alarm keypad to add to the HKC intrusion detection product range. The big show returns!

This month we talk to Gerry Dunphy, Event Director Fire & Security at Informa, about what will be in store at IFSEC this year when the industry can finally get together again at Excel in London for the first time since 2019 How does it feel to finally get a date in the diary for the next IFSEC? Mightily relieved and excited! If you think about it, the last time we hosted IFSEC was June 2019 which now seems to be from another era, given all that has happened in the intervening years.

2021 was particularly frustrating as we were in a constant stop/ start position trying to find a viable gap in the permissible periods to host the show but in the end, the restrictions made the decision for us. The one benefit of that situation was it allowed us to focus on 2022 with total clarity as well as testing loads of ideas and themes.

You’ve had a while without an IFSEC to plan for – has this given you time to reassess anything in regard to the direction, aims or make up of the show?

The entire period was an opportunity to take a higher level view of the fundamentals of what our shows are all about and what they represent

to the participating markets and industries. We took the opportunity to conduct research with the key installer audience and the major outcomes were around skills and training. There seems to be a genuine appetite for improving skills and learning particularly around new technology as very often anxieties challenges seem to arise when innovations appear. We hosted targeted training sessions online around areas such as fire alarm installation and video analytics with our partners at Skills For Security and it proved to us that bridging the knowledge gap is vital.

This has subsequently led us to formulate a plan around IFSEC & FIREX Training at the shows this which will form a major part of our proposition this year for installers in particular. I won’t say anymore as there is a launch schedule in place.

On a lighter note we’re very aware that everyone has been apart for so long that the need to engage with friends and colleagues has never been greater, so there will be a much greater emphasis on the social aspects of the show such as networking and the after hours aspects. We’ve already witnessed with the return of the Security & Fire Excellence Awards last November that there is a huge appetite for the security and fire markets to reunite in a social setting.

What was the reaction to the online events/initiatives you started during the pandemic?

The stand out success has been the introduction of Tech Talks which provided manufacturers with opportunities to supply product specific videos hosted by a professional presenter. The video was followed by Q&A sessions whereby the manufacturer could answer questions in real time from the viewing audience which provided the opportunity to discuss the products and innovations in greater depth. We’ve now hosted over fifty Tech Talk sessions across the fire and security sectors and these are all available to view via the IFSEC Global website.

The added bonus is that the sessions are all available on demand which means the participating companies have ready made

product demos introduced by a professional presenter- they have an extended shelf life on YouTube.

We also introduced an online meetings platform in July 2021 called IFSEC Connect which provided manufacturers and service providers with a chance to meet with their customers online via a virtual booth. It was similar to a social media connections platform whereby visitors could request meetings from the manufacturers and vice versa- the whole operation was transparent and searchable.

Connect was a good stand in for the live event and we’ve heard some great accounts of new business coming from some unlikely sources!

How will the IFSEC of 2022 be different from what we’ve seen before? Less hardware, more software do you think?

From our conversations with the exhibitors, there is certainly a whole new set of product applications which have arrived since the Covid pandemic. Much greater emphasis on touchless technologies and thermal imaging as the products have adapted to the new normal. There is an interesting dynamic at work here as the manufacturers seem to have thought about the challenges in quite remarkable ways and many of these products haven’t really been seen on a mass scale which makes coming to IFSEC even more compelling. We’re having a particular focus on the products released during Covid as the audience won’t have seen or held many of the new technologies and they definitely won’t have spoken to their vendor partners face to face.

Software is becoming ever- present which is an area we’re looking at once again with our Converged Security Centre feature which will provide scheduled demonstrations around how hardware and software, when used in tandem, can provide a full overview of a security situation with deliverable intel and business critical data.

Is there anything extra planned at the event specifically of interest to installers?

The new Training initiative has been planned with installers specifically in mind. Without giving the game away before we officially launch, we’ll have an exciting range of major training providers, associations and vendors involved to deliver high quality, focused and accredited training sessions. This will make visiting IFSEC and FIREX even more valuable than before as they can mix learning with product sourcing via the exhibition.

In addition the exhibitors themselves are of direct interest to the installer audience. Where else will they see headliners such as Texecom, Hikvision, Dahua, Paxton, CSL, BT Redcare, Commend, CAME, C-Tec, Kentec, Salto, SSAIB, NSI and the BSIA all in one place? We’re also delighted to be welcoming Elmdene back to IFSEC after a number of years which to me is symbolic of the resurgence of our shows after such a long break.

Would you say that even though we have become used to video conferencing there’s no replacing face-to-face meetings?

The emergence of video conferencing as a norm has helped us stay in touch with all our customers and stakeholders over a challenging period. It also means calls and meetings around the world have become more visual and information led as you can share information on screens which you can’t do on a phone.

But nothing in the world will replace meeting people face to face. We’ve already seen it with the few Informa shows that managed to come back last year, there was a tangible appetite and anticipation for professionals to come together to meet again and discuss the issues driving their sectors.

IFSEC will be 50 years old in 2023 and since its inception at the Royal Lancaster Hotel in 1973, it has been a key date in the diary for security professionals around the world. It’s a major meeting place for everyone in the sector and coming back after an enforced hibernation makes it even more tantalising, especially when there will be so many new products on display and a major new threat in the form of Covid to deal with. The IFSEC audience will have a range of new challenges to deal with courtesy of the pandemic and IFSEC will be one of the earliest opportunities for them to meet with their key suppliers and understand how the technology can combat this new world.

It’s been a tricky time for everyone since the previous IFSEC in 2019, how will you judge the success of the 2022 event?

Ordinarily we’d have a very straight bat response which would be vendors rebooking for 2023 and audience levels increasing on previous years. But this year will have added factors such as people thoroughly enjoying the reunions and reconnections with their friends and colleagues. We want to provide a tangible sense of joy and delight at being back with your tribe in a vibrant and energetic setting where you can see things you’ve never seen before. If we can see lots of happy customers in the halls, the bars are all full of noise and the after hours events are rocking then we’ll say welcome back IFSEC!

Coping with supply concerns The PSI Panel returns with a look at supply chain concerns and offer advice for installers

L

ast month we looked at the current state of play regarding supply and shortages in the electronic security market. Due to global conditions such as the pandemic, economic concerns and bureaucracy the components supply chain is under some considerable stress.

In the UK we might be experiencing some easing in Covid restrictions, which along the line may indicate (fingers-crossed) the beginning of the lifting of some of the constraints around the world for lorry drivers. For installers however there are still stories of technology supply problems, so what does the PSI Panel think about the situation?

This scenario has come about thanks to a ‘perfect storm’, which includes many influences, not just COVID. Growth in many sectors across the wider technology and IoT markets combined with natural disasters (fire, droughts, and floods) and ongoing trade wars, has resulted in an increased demand for components, at a rate that production cannot match. In addition, as these components become scarce, they increase in price, and many suppliers are being impacted by this. Bidding wars can start, leaving some businesses empty-handed.

The mission critical nature of the electronic security industry, protecting people and premises, means suppliers cannot simply refuse to pay the increased costs. Installers, rightly, must have access to the products they need to provide their service to their customers. If not, those people and premises are left vulnerable, do not meet their insurance standards, and could be denied their police response. We have been working with our supply partners to ensure they prioritise our sector above others due to the special services we support. Backing from the BSIA and the NPCC (National Police Chiefs’ Council) has assisted us greatly in these discussions.

For Installers, it has never been more important to plan and not leave any projects until the last minute. The next few years will see hundreds of thousands of upgrades to older systems as part of the UK’s All IP project. To ensure that the products are available for these upgrades, it is imperative that they work with suppliers to provide awareness of what is to come. By working together, I am confident we can overcome these challenges and ensure we protect all end-users and their premises.

The electronic security industry should be concerned about anything that affects its supply chain and there’s no doubt that there are serious issues at the moment. Some manufacturers are quoting lead times of between 6-12 months and this is causing problems for installers and their customers, potentially leading to project delays until specific components can be delivered.

Ultimately the solution is centred around early forecasting and commitment, communication, flexibility, trust and timeliness.

The situation is the result of numerous factors. These include chip shortages from the Far East, the impact of the coronavirus pandemic, and problems within the shipping (continued over)

working with a trusted and respected installation partner is more vital than ever to ensure that projects are successfully delivered.

and the broader logistics sector that are mainly driven by labour shortages. Manufacturers are finding it difficult to maintain adaptable levels of production, often due to Covid-19 labour disruption. This is all creating a perfect storm.

At the ‘front-end’ remote working has meant that many customer project decisions are taking longer than usual, and clarifications are slower to resolve. Therefore, it is imperative for all parties to engage as early as possible, be as open and honest as they can and approach the situation with a sense of realism. This often means having an openminded and flexible attitude either towards the proposed project deadline or flexibility on utilising alternative products where appropriate. Even at Reliance we have yet to learn how to bend the laws of time, although we try!

An integrator that is agile, innovative, proactive and well connected will help mitigate some of the challenges. Additionally, customers need to trust that when an integrator is ‘pushing’ for an early order or specification change, this is not a negotiation tactic, but a reaction to a difficult and dynamic environment.

Is there any light at the end of the tunnel? At this stage it’s difficult to say – there certainly won’t be significant change for a few months at least, but perhaps by the summer things will look a bit more positive. In the meantime,

Fortunately for us, the detector market benefits from stability through maturity, with far less reliance on chasing the latest cutting edge, high-demand components to meet incremental annual update cycles when compared to the CCTV market for example. The comparatively pedestrian pace of detector development means that infrared technologies remain relevant for longer, meaning product lifecycles span years rather than months, allowing us to commit to procuring components often several years in advance.

However, the impact of Brexit in combination with the COVID-19 pandemic is compounding supply issues, affecting air and sea cargo capacities significantly, resulting in slower, more expensive and increasingly more complicated transit of goods from Japan to the UK and from the UK into Europe.

There are a number of measures that we have taken in order to mitigate the impact of both, be it through short-term inventory planning such as increasing local stock levels, to implementing longer-term production efficiencies in order to maintain a consistent supply of product. It is an ever-changing landscape that we are navigating, and one we continue to monitor very closely.

Whilst we have had no issues maintaining sufficient stock levels to meet demand, we have been made aware by our distributors that a number of manufacturers have been less fortunate.

Should a particular product be unavailable to an installer, we would encourage them to instead explore alternative products and technologies which perhaps fall outside of their typical comfort zone. Product reliability and longevity is another crucial consideration when faced with limited supply. We often think of value in terms of price; something cheaper surely represents better value than something more expensive. However, a product represents value not by how little it costs, but by its ability to provide and maintain precise, dependable operation, year after year.

New skills events announced A new series of events has been launched called “Next Generation” which sees PSI magazine team up with Skills for Security to focus on raising awareness on apprentices, training and new technology - and there is a golf day too!

ith a theme of apprenticeships, training, recruitment and technology innovation, two new UK events in 2022 will seek to bring the industry together to promote the sector, raise product awareness and encourage personal development in the security installation trade.

Hosted by PSI magazine in association with Skills for Security, the new events with the theme “Next Generation”, will take place at two prestigious UK venues.

“The term “Next Generation” refers to the two angles of the events,” says PSI magazine editor Andy Clutton. “One is the next generation of talent we need to bring into the security industry and the other is the next generation technology that manufacturers will be showcasing at the two shows.”

The two-day events will comprise a day of presentations held under the guidance of Skills for Security, the UK's largest fire and security apprenticeship provider, and also include a programme of in-depth technology installation and application demonstrations and a table-top exhibition area featuring key manufacturers, service providers and recruitment companies. This will be followed by a networking dinner in the evening and a golf day on the second day at which players will compete for the IFSEC Cup. The event at Luton Hoo will also include the PSI Premier Awards Dinner on the evening of 23rd June when the installer’s favourite technology innovators and service providers of the year will be revealed.

Trusting trending technology What is the current state of play regarding facial recognition technology and AI solutions and how can you be sure you can trust the systems on the market? ast month we asked a panel of experts to give us their predictions for the year ahead. There were a number of differing viewpoints however two areas that cropped up on regular occasion were the subjects of AI and facial recognition, and not always with security purposes in mind and sometimes, with some concern.

Using video surveillance systems for more than security monitoring has become an added bonus of the analytics software that developers have brought to market and we have often advised installers to look beyond the security angle when pitching for business. After all, sharing the budget between the security department and the business development team softens the blow of the initial install cost to those looking at the numbers and if you throw in potential business and performance benefits then there is another ROI on the table.

Facial recognition itself has been a hot topic in the world of surveillance experiencing increased interest in its potential uses as new systems and analytics come to market. So what do the next twelve months hold for the technology and what

is the importance of building trust in the systems that are being deployed?

Facial recognition Facial Recognition Technology (FRT) is playing an increasingly key role in global urban development and improving the lives and experiences of citizens. Identification of individuals solely for surveillance is only one of the range of security applications that the technology offers according to Rob Watts, CEO of Corsight AI. One such application is for seamless customer experiences when it comes to payments. “With your face as your credit card, citizens no longer have to leverage cash for payments or worry about a stolen/lost wallet,” says Rob. “A secure biometric system makes paying for goods or services effortless as being pioneered by Amazon Go stores.”

During the pandemic when contactless access control and people counting came to the fore, workplaces began to understand the value of FRT for access control purposes as it enables the seamless flow of people and facilitates the protection of sensitive locations by restricting

access to approved visitors only. Spaces such as building sites, maternity wards and critical national infrastructure can all benefit from this software.

“Facial recognition can also be used in smart cities to help identify those at risk,” explains Rob. “In the case of searching for a missing child or Alzheimer’s patient, FRT can significantly speed up the process.”

There is a particular concern in the media today about the safety of public streets, especially for women. In 2022 FRT could prove useful for recognising unusual behaviour and identifying and tracking known offenders throughout the city environment, thus extending its uses in security surveillance.

Standards in 2022

As with any technology, there are potential risks to using facial recognition, such as threats to privacy, violations of rights and potential data theft. These concerns are of significant importance and have even forced the hand of some public and private organisations to limit the use of the technology. This calls for thoughtful government regulation moving forward and heightened responsibility for FRT vendors and operators to comply.

As data processing becomes more central to operations in 2022, organisations will need to be more responsive to the evolving cyber threat landscape. For FRT end-users, in particular, securing biometric data will remain a top priority.

“Cybercriminals are becoming increasingly sophisticated in their methods, and typically seek the most sensitive data to hold at ransom.

Vendors must therefore implement the most stringent security measures to protect sensitive data and ensure end-users are working hard to keep on top of the threat,” advises Rob. “Customers will also demand more transparency from organisations about how they are using their biometric data – how it is being stored and protected. To garner trust, users of FRT must be more explicit in its use and set clear measures on individual privacy and data protection.”

Authenticate everything

In 2022 and beyond, we expect to see further commitment from policymakers and industry to develop even higher standards to levels not seen before. The move towards trustworthy AI, greater regulation and genuine commitment to Human Rights will support the development of this software so that it can be used as a force for good.

Trusting technology As we look ahead it’s clear that matching the ongoing pace of technological innovation to an equal evolution in building trust in the use of technology is imperative. Trust is becoming increasingly important for individuals, organisations, and legislators, so it’s interesting to see how many of our technology trends for 2022 can be linked to the need to build a trusted technology ecosystem, and ultimately a smarter, safer world.

To the end user, the architecture being used to deliver services has become invisible. Whether processing takes place on a device, local server or in a remote data centre, everything is connected.

“As a security solution vendor, it’s up to us to provide the tools and flexibility to help people decide on the best solution for their unique situation,” says Johan Paulsson, CTO at Axis Communications. “Given that ‘connected’ has become the default, we do believe that most surveillance solutions will ultimately be hybrid; combining cloud, on-premise server and edge technologies.

“While we foresaw the rapid acceleration towards Zero Trust network architectures a year ago, we now believe it to be a default approach.

The Covid-19 pandemic has played a role here too, as flexible working has seen more devices connected remotely over the public internet.

Taking a Zero Trust approach involves evaluating the security profile for each device each time it connects which has significant implications for

The ability to establish the authenticity of video footage is fundamental. Tampering with video after it is captured, along with increased sophistication in creating manipulated images, means that we may see the authenticity of video surveillance footage being more regularly questioned. As this is an issue for the security industry as a whole it’s imperative that the sector aligns to standardise its approach, ideally based on open-source software and initiatives.

Many would also argue that AI is no longer a trend. Indeed, we’re all using and being exposed to valuable AI and deep learning-based services on a daily basis.

“Our view remains that technology in itself shouldn’t be regulated, but that legislation and regulation relating to the development and use of AI-based technologies and applications should be adhered to by every organisation employing AI,” says Johan. “We expect to see a greater focus on initiatives to ensure that AI is being implemented ethically and without bias.

“For us, a new technology only becomes a trend when we start to see valuable use cases appear in the security and surveillance sector,” says Johan. “This is starting to happen with 5G, for example. While much of the hype around 5G has been focused on improvements in network performance for consumer applications, 5G networks show genuine potential for video surveillance solutions and could bring particular benefits from a cybersecurity perspective.”

The rise of the ‘cobots’ How using advanced AI and video is helping robots to “see” in manufacturing ot long ago, a world inhabited by robots was merely a sci-fi storyline. Today, robots have become part and parcel of many manufacturing lines. We’ve become used to seeing them assemble, pick and pack, and zip down warehouses looking for the latest item for delivery. They have become indispensable to many organisations and individuals, where many work hand-in-hand with human colleagues. Now, they are being given the ability to see and are using video technology to be even more efficient.

Rise of the cobot

Most of the robotic technology seen to date in manufacturing are termed ‘cobots’. These are collaborative robots that require human-torobot interaction in order to work effectively.

They can (quite literally) pick up in areas where humans cannot, lifting and assembling heavy objects. More uses

Until this development, cobots have essentially acted as strong and efficient extra limbs for operators. Now, with machine vision, they are developing situational awareness to complement their mobility and dexterity. They will be able to undertake more challenging activities, such as picking and packing fragile or difficult-to-hold items. Supported by video, cobots can orientate and perform different actions on the same object based on its positioning. They can also be programmed for quality control.

Moreover, AI vision will allow cobots to work in less structured environments. Because of the situational awareness created, cobots will be able to function effectively in agricultural and food processing plants where not everything on a conveyor belt may be the same size and structure. Cobots will also be able to work with random parts placed on a belt or racking automobile components.

Cobots with AI vision will also be able to operate more safely. They can automatically detect when they are close to a human colleague and either slow down or stop completely based on set distance parameters. This reduces the

them. Hanwha Techwin has been driving progress in this area, working with the robotics arm of the Hanwha Corporation to augment its equipment with deep learning and AI vision.

For example, Hanwha’s HCR Advanced robots are configurable with a “Robot Monitoring Service”, which uses camera technology from Hanwha Techwin to keep a close eye over the immediate workspace, sounding warnings in the event of imminent danger.

Other video-based solutions for Hanwha’s robots include “Robot AI 3D Vision,” which adds a 3D camera so the robot can scan its surroundings and use deep learning technology to optimise its movements. A separate “Robot Visual Safety” feature tracks the location of the human operators with whom the robot shares its space, to avoid accidents. Should someone step into the robot’s “yellow zone”, it will automatically slow its movements to lower the risk of collision. And if a human steps into the cobot’s “red zone”, it will stop completely.

Optimising performance At the same time, AI vision can use cameras placed across a manufacturing plant to supervise the performance of the cobots themselves. Again, this is an area where Hanwha Corporation is innovating by calling on the video technology expertise of Hanwha Techwin. The AI system can proactively alert plant operators of potential issues, such as the risk of a cobot breaking down. If a cobot stops working, the AI system can detect this quickly and flag it to engineering for a quick response. It could also tell maintenance when to service a particular cobot based on its state when operating. Visual data from the plant floor could

tell supervisors how well the cobots are performing and could inform future plant layouts.

Autonomous mobile robots moving around a plant floor can use visual data to learn the layout of a warehouse. They can navigate safely around obstacles in real-time and find the most efficient route through a building. This will save humans from doing time-consuming and laborious manual transport.

Constantly improving Insights from cameras placed inside and alongside robots can be combined with deep learning to optimise their movements. A cobot can automatically assess how well it has assembled or packed an object based on the visual data being sent back to it. It can then try different combinations or movements until it reaches the one that achieves the best results in the most efficient time.

Part of a digital evolution It’s worth mentioning the wider scale of digitisation happening in manufacturing today.

Traditionally, intruder systems have been Texecom and Orisec and for fire we use C-tec and Apollo. We utilise Paxton for access control and use Immix, Bold and Sentinel in our ARC environments and Transpeye for our data mining software.

Sam Rodway – Ambush Security Systems For intruder we use both Pyronix and Texecom systems, each having their own benefits. Pyronix systems are perfect for domestic customers in particular, we fit a lot of Enforcer systems on smaller residential properties as their user friendly menus and app make them perfect for everyday use. Whereas the Texecom systems come in to their own for larger installations with the wireless Ricochet technology, discreet wireless range and high quality flush keypads. Their cloud services also enable us to remotely service and diagnose faults on monitored systems reducing engineer time on site and any inconvenience for the client. For CCTV we use a wide selection of the Dahua and HikVision range, with the latest technology being the full colour range which has been a big hit with our clients! The ability to identify the colour of clothing or a vehicle in the dark of night is a must, not only for the client but for the local authority. Not surprisingly we have seen a high demand for this technology. For access control and entryphone systems we use Paxton and CAME BPT, which we have used since I started in the industry, their product reliability and technical support is by far the best available.

Nick Day – Armadillo Safeguards We have had a really good experience with Axis cameras for CCTV systems, 2N IP intercoms for access control solutions and Orisec for intruder alarm systems.

In terms of the latest technologies, we are particularly impressed with WaveKey the Bluetooth-based mobile access technology from 2N. It’s capable of unlocking a door in just 0.3 seconds, twice as fast as a RFID card, and it has huge benefits both for office managers and their employees.

Gavin Bell – A.Alexander & Son For intruder systems we stick to Honeywell Galaxy and Pyronix. The broad range of products provided allows us to install the most appropriate solution for any customer requirements. Simplifying access management at Galleons Point With a portfolio of 712 high-rise and low-rise apartments, freehold houses and live-work units, Galleons Point Management needed an access control system that could keep up with high demand and frequent use. Due to the volume of tenants, the previous fob-based, wired access systems created a significant amount of admin.

Plus, fobs would frequently go missing and there was no way of keeping track of them.

For 22 blocks in particular, the problem was urgent, but the time it would take to update this number of wired intercoms and handsets, and the labour-intensive re-cabling process within the buildings, was an issue.

The Galleons Point Management team was introduced to Intratone as a potential solutions provider and together with the Residents’ Association they chose the wireless SC-02 intercom with an integrated video camera.

And so, the GSM-based SC-02 intercom was fitted across the Galleons Point site. Using the same wireless technology that powers mobile phone calls, the SC-02 allows tenants to grant access from their preferred digital device or landline with no need for built-in handsets in their flats. And, because it’s a cable-free technology, the installation process was streamlined significantly too.

The benefits aren’t just for tenants either. Like all Intratone intercoms, the wireless SC-02 connects to a secure remote online portal – so housing professionals can see a real-time overview of fob usage and property access anywhere, at any time.

And they can even complete day-to-day admin tasks such as updating key fobs or changing resident information from their laptop too.

Ray O’Shaughnessy, Property Manager at the site, explains how easy it was to get up and running: ‘The installation process was great – it was 100 times easier than upgrading the old wired systems.

Master key system transforms access at Bath NHS Trust The Royal United Hospitals Bath NHS Foundation Trust is utilising Triton2 the master key system from Assa Abloy for assured security and key control.

Opening in 2019 at the main Royal United Hospitals site in the Weston area of Bath, the Centre is an outpatient facility providing treatment, care and education to those recovering from episodes of illness or injury, or who need help managing longterm conditions. With services covering rheumatology, therapies and pain management, the Centre includes clinic and treatment rooms, a gym, hydrotherapy pool, an assessment and teaching kitchen, bathroom and bedroom, Skype clinic room, and education rooms for forums and classes.

The Triton2 master key system has also been installed in the Bernard Ireland House residential building, which offers accommodation for patients, with facilities including group treatment areas, office space, and a dedicated therapeutic courtyard area. Triton2 provides a reliable means of key management for both the residents and staff, so they can focus on delivering care.

Hospitals and healthcare estates typically have large and complex key demands, because of the high number of staff employed, the variety of areas requiring different levels of access rights, and the fact that security and safety must not be compromised.

Triton2 was supplied and installed by distributor Gemsec and raises security standards by ensuring employees have different levels of security access based on their roles, significantly reducing the risk of unauthorised access and security breaches. A hierarchy of access rights means no matter what an individual’s role at the site – whether it’s a general manager, doctors and nurses, tenants, porters, and so on – all have access to only the areas they need.

London Stansted Airport has installed Videalert CCTV enforcement cameras to eliminate the incidence of tailgating as drivers attempt to leave the drop off zones and short term car parks without paying. The cameras were supplied as part of an ongoing contract with NSL, the provider of parking enforcement services.

According to Steve Mills, Surface Access Manager – Landside Operations at London Stansted Airport: “NSL has provided us with a cost effective enforcement solution that will enable us to rapidly achieve high levels of compliance, particularly in respect of the repeat offenders that try to avoid paying their parking charges. This has been a particular issue in short term car parks where people have routinely stayed two weeks without paying. The cameras will help us to eliminate lost parking revenues and improve safety for all passengers.”

The system helps simplify key management too; a member of staff is able to access a range of rooms and areas from a single key, rather than having to carry around a collection of them. Furthermore, the fact that one key can open a number of locks means less duplicates are needed. Should there be a security breach, it’s easy to identify who has access to a particular area and ensure the appropriate action is taken.

Three things to know about WDR

ynamic range refers to the ratio between the largest and smallest measurable quantities of something. In the case of video surveillance, dynamic range measures the ratio between the lightest and darkest elements of the image. WDR technology is great for high contrast scenes, balancing the brightness and shaded areas simultaneously so an image neither appears blown out or too dark.

Decibels (dB) are the value with which dynamic range is measured. IHS defines WDR at 60 dB or greater, though it’s not uncommon to see WDR cameras with capabilities of 120 dB or more. However, keep in mind that each manufacturer has their own method of determining a camera’s dB. Therefore, when comparing product datasheets, it is possible that a camera with a lower ratio outperforms a competitor with a higher dB ratio.

Dahua HDCVI 6.0 PLUS) are using either Digital WDR (DWDR) or True WDR. True WDR uses image sensors and a digital signal processor (DSP) to provide even illumination to all areas of

an image. A True WDR-enabled video surveillance camera has sensors that take two scans of each video frame. The first, at low speed (to capture more light), shows the image in normal light conditions. The second scan is taken at high speed to capture less light overall and get an image with strong light in the background. The DSP combines the two scans to form a single, balanced, well-illuminated image.

DWDR uses algorithms instead of sensors to digitally brighten too-dark areas and dim toobright areas. DWDR relies on the DSP chip instead of the image sensor to provide WDR. It adjusts each individual pixel of the image and calculates exposure accordingly. This technique has some limitations: the intense manipulation of pixels leads to the overall image being grainier. On the other hand, DWDR doesn’t need costly image sensors, so DWDR can be a more economical option when WDR is a necessity.

When you don’t have WDR There are two options for improving the exposure of an image without using WDR. In a high-contrast scene with heavy, broad, backlighting, the camera will adjust to the average illumination, which will darken the image. If no WDR is available, Backlight Compensation (BLC) brightens the image so you can see darker details better. BLC is a legacy technique that uses DSPs to increase the level of exposure for the entire image. Rather than balancing brightness on overexposed and underexposed areas of an image like WDR does, it brightens the entire image.

Highlight compensation (HLC) is a technology where image sensors detect strong light within the image and reduce exposure on those areas to enhance the overall image quality. In a dimly-lit scene with bright lighting caused by hot spots (e.g. headlights, street lights), the overall image may become too dark.

If no WDR is available, use HLC. The camera automatically suppresses bright light sources, allowing proper exposure of adjacent areas.

Conclusion Regardless of dB value specified, image results will vary depending on the complexity and amount of movement in a scene. To determine the best camera for an application, it is always best to test that it meets the needs and expectations of the customer.

APPOINTMENTS Justin Maltby-Smith

The BAFE Fire Safety Register has announced the appointment of its new Managing Director, Dr Justin Maltby-Smith.

Justin joins from his most recent roles as Technical Scheme Development Manager at NAPIT and before this a long tenure at Certsure/NICEIC leaving as Head of Schemes and Operations. Justin said: “Stephen Adams has developed BAFE to become the quality standard within the fire safety industry which I plan to continue and expand its reach. I, alongside the quality BAFE team, will work on further development of quantifying competency.

I am excited for the next chapter of BAFE’s growth, knowing we already have robust and longstanding foundations to build upon.”

James Gribben

The British Security Industry Association (BSIA) has appointed James Gribben as its Chief Commercial Officer.

James joins the Association bringing 20 years of commercial experience in the fire and security industry, specialising in leading sales and marketing roles. James has a strong track record in aligning marketing strategy with sales objectives for companies such as SMC, Stanley Security and Tyco. His prime responsibility will be to drive membership retention and accelerate membership growth, working closely with the Marketing/Communications and Membership teams.

Hemy Fintsy

RISCO Group has announced the appointment of Hemy Fintsy as CEO. Moshe Alkelai, founder of RISCO, has held both positions of Chairman and CEO for more than 40 years and will continue as Chairman, allowing for dedicated focus on business and product development and entering new market segments.

After successfully performing several key senior positions at RISCO, Hemy Fintsy brings deep insight and experience within the security sector and his appointment will reinforce the long-term development, customer focus initiatives and view to the expansion of RISCO in both existing and emerging markets.

Mark Massie

Dahua Technology has appointed Mark Massie as Sales Director for UK and Ireland.

Mark will lead Dahua’s business development teams, growing existing relationships with security integrators and creating valuable new opportunities, as the company continues to accelerate growth in its highly valuable UK and Ireland markets. He previously held senior sales roles for security equipment manufacturing and distribution companies, including Head of International Sales for ADI Global Distribution and Senior Director of Sales for UK and Ireland at Avigilon.

James Wang, General Manager of Dahua UK and Ireland, said: “We are delighted to have Mark Massie on board as Sales Director. Mark’s valuable experience in senior sales management roles with leading manufacturer and distributor companies will stand him in good stead, as he takes on the role of leading our commercial teams in enhancing existing relationships with customers and creating new opportunities around the UK and Ireland.”

Duncan Weir

It was announced recently that Webeye IT & Development Director, Duncan Weir, will be stepping up as the new Managing Director of the company in place of soon to be CEO, Clive Mason.

Duncan has worked for the company for three years and his passion and dedication to WebeyeCMS as a company really shows. Clive Mason stated that he: “Couldn’t have thought of a more capable, dedicated and passionate person to pass the role over to and believes there will be some very exciting times ahead.”

Duncan will be taking on the role of Webeye MD immediately and looks forward to the challenges and opportunities this position offers.
