his year marks the fifth consecutive year for the Benchmark Innovation Awards.

The awards, voted by our readers, acknowledge companies and products that have provided innovative solutions to today's complex and changing security needs.

The security market is constantly evolving.

The use of AI, higher resolution cameras, and the broader availability of cloud offerings and mobile capabilities provide more flexibility and a deeper understanding of data and incident patterns than ever before.

New services are being offered, equipment is becoming smarter, and new hybrid solutions are bridging the gap between traditional and new technologies. Security companies must adapt to these changes to thrive, which is where innovation is born.

The Innovation Awards aim to identify pioneering security and surveillance products and solutions that have broken through known limitations, whether by developing new approaches or products and, in some cases, by redefining the problem altogether to come up with new possible alternatives.

We had eight categories, including Innovation Company of the year. The awards are well-deserved recognition for innovative teams, companies and projects. They're also great for setting examples and inspiring others.

Hikvision’s All-in-one Indoor Station, a centralised entry solution

Hikvision All-in-one Indoor Station is a finalist in the Visitor Management Innovation category at this year’s Benchmark Innovation Awards. The Allin-one Indoor Station, which comes in two flavours: a 7-in and a 10-in touch-screen tablet, is not an ordinary intercom.

ee Howard, Product Pre-Sales Specialist at Hikvision, explains, “This new, improved version of the All-in-one Indoor Station was launched only a couple of months ago. At its core is the built-in HikConnect App, which controls and manages all Hikvision access control, video security, NVRs, intrusion alarm, video intercom, and alarm devices. The App, suitable for Android and Apple devices, provides simple control and flexible linkage among various Hikvision devices.

Features and Benefits As an indoor video intercom station, the tablet enables two-way audio and video verification for entry control with the door station and mobile App.

To avoid ‘sticky fingers’ messing about with the Indoor Station, it comes with a gesture lock, which is child safe.

Users can quickly check device and network status, battery, and environmental temperature, with everything on one screen.

“The station also features easy integration with third-party Android applications, adding new levels of convenience for users. Apps such as Spotify or Alexa, can also be loaded on the tablet,” said Lee. Although there is a tablet version, the indoor station is usually fixed in place at an entrance hall or other convenient location, putting the system within easy reach without requiring one to carry one’s mobile phone at home. The tablet has soft edges and a built-in comfort light to find it in the dark.

“In case of requiring a solution for special needs, additional alarm outputs, such as flashing light for people who are hard of hearing, can be added.”

Some of the daily operations that can be performed with a simple tap when entering or exiting a building include: • Camera live view and playback • Locking/unlocking doors remotely • Arming/disarming the alarm system • Checking monitoring status • Receiving intercom calls The Indoor Station does what it says on the tin; it offers an all-in-one solution.

Applications Suitable for residential and commercial applications, the All-in-one Indoor Station has a one-way video intercom to identify who is at the door. It can also serve as a home or office hub for all security devices.

Lee says, “The All-in-one Indoor Station also has a built-in SIP Server, which allows intercom within a building. A good application of it would be on Student accommodation.”

“If the building uses an IP system, the unit can be powered over the ethernet (PoE),” Lee points out.

A.I. Tech offers PPE infractions prevention on the Edge

Preventing accidents and deaths is an excellent way to reduce costs rather than managing the consequences. The European Agency for Safety and Health at Work reportedly said that the annual cost of accidents at work is approximately $ 2.680 billion, $ 476 billion if we consider Europe only.

his is an objective close at heart at Italian innovator A.I. Tech. A.I. Tech’s latest product, the A.I. PPE (Personal Protective Equipment ), has been selected by Benchmark Magazine readers as a finalist for the Analytics and software innovation category on the Benchmark Innovation Awards 2022.

Based on advanced artificial intelligence algorithms, the AI-PPE is a video analytic app designed to detect the presence of workers inside the monitored areas and raise the alarm if some of them are not using Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as helmets and visibility jackets. There are no restrictions 16

on the number of workers and areas to be monitored; the app can deal with multiple workers and areas simultaneously and can be used indoors and outdoors.

AI-PPE video analytics application guarantees worker safety in all the environments where wearing PPE is mandatory.

Alessia Saggese, Co-Owner of A.I. Tech, comments, “One of the most interesting use cases we are working on is the design of a smart pole equipped with a camera and a safety light. The camera will act as an intelligent sensor using the video analytics application based on deep neural networks to detect the presence of people and determine whether or not they are wearing personal protective equipment (PPE).

The video analytics software will run directly on board the camera without transmitting the video stream to a server or the cloud. If the app detects that a worker is not properly wearing a PPE, the worker is informed in real time, and the light is switched on.

“This type of solution has several benefits: It is plug-and-play and easy to move and install, this is important for temporary worksites, like those over the streets or the highways; The solution is privacy compliant because the stream does not leave the device and we only send notifications that cannot be used to identify the workers, moreover, the device is more robust w.r.t. cyberattacks because it

does not need a connection to the cloud; The total cost of the solution is related only to the device and the software without the needs to pay cloud services or to buy external servers.”

PPE are products that the user can wear or hold to protect against risks either at work, at home, or while engaging in leisure activities.

Statistics on fatal and major work accidents underline the importance of protection and prevention, for which personal protective equipment plays an important role.

Saggese shares an example: “In Italy, legislation regarding worker safety (Testo Unico sulla Sicurezza) establishes how to guarantee safety based on the company core business. It also prescribes which PPEs are mandatory for workers to prevent accidents and deaths at work. If the workers neglect to wear the required PPE, the employer’s responsibility is to monitor and avoid workers’ disregard of the regulation. Thus, in Italy, this solution is of great help to the employers as they can have continuous monitoring of working areas, especially riskier ones. In Europe, there are different directives and guidelines for the companies to guarantee workers’ safety through PPE.” Over the years, A.I. Tech has developed products that focus on building security.

However, since the global pandemic, the company started working on solutions for people’s safety, like AICrowd-DEEP to monitor overcrowding situations and social distances.

Saggese concludes, “Today, people are more likely to accept video analytics solutions even in the workplaces, especially if these solutions respect privacy and can effectively guarantee their safety. A good example is A.I. Tech products that allow for processing the stream directly on board a smart camera without sending data to external servers or to cloud services.

“In addition, construction sites and manufacturing industries have fully resumed their activities after the COVID pause, and there is a strong demand for innovative solutions suitable for these work environments. For this reason, and also guided by a POC project, we decided to invest in this new video analytics solution to enter this growing market. To give some context related to Italy, reports of accidents in the workplace increased by 27% from 2019 to 2020 and the same trend is expected in 2022.”

New solutions to the Azena platform include a sophisticated fall detection app for healthcare, which monitors and analyzes patient, visitor, and staff behaviour and alerts hospital staff of abnormal movement, upright seating, an exposed limb, or a fall. Other new applications include solutions for oil and gas that monitor flare detection and liquid leak and gas monitoring, providing a cost-effective and flexible alternative to traditional monitoring technologies to help reduce the frequency and expense of environmental fines and aid in regulatory compliance.

Retailers can use heat mapping, store traffic analysis, customer behaviour analytics, fire and smoke detection, queue management, shelf monitoring, and other merchandising optimisation tools. Large entertainment venues can employ apps that perform license plate recognition, crowd formation and behaviour, parking management, objects left behind, and fall detection to assist fans in potential distress.

Transportation providers can leverage these retail and venue apps, including seat occupancy detection, wrong-way detection monitoring and many more.

Smart cameras using the Azena Operating System are even being deployed on autonomous robotic devices to monitor high-sensitivity environments, such as stadium and entertainment venues, manufacturing and logistics, and oil and gas facilities. Autonomous robots can traverse into high-risk areas that humans cannot safely access or simply perform automated tasks, such as a spill or hazard detection in a retail store, warehouse facility or corporate office environment.

Integrators using the Azena platform can also benefit from enhanced device and project management capabilities to more effectively serve their customers. IPS NextGen VideoAnalytics was launched in April 2021 to combine all IPS video analytics into one product. First of all, intrusion detection was added to the IPS NextGen VA. Then, in the 2022 release, loitering and privacy

detection were included in addition to intrusion detection.

The new features make the solution much more desirable. Previously it was necessary to purchase individual licenses for these functionalities. In addition, the combined video analytics are now available for fixed cameras and can be configured easily, all for one fixed price.

The detection of people loitering, now also integrated into the IPS NextGen VideoAnalytics, can also be configured very easily. By clicking on an object symbol previously placed in a zone, you can set the permitted dwell time for a person or an object. If it exceeds the set value, an alarm is triggered.

“The new analytics is even more powerful by adding the two functions of privacy protection and loitering detection. The user benefits from a simple operation and the freedom of being able to individually configure various applications and thus being well prepared in the event of danger,” says Peter Treutler, Director of IPS Intelligent Video Software.

Moreover, the number of independently adjustable rules has increased from two to three. This gives the user even more flexibility in the various application scenarios such as entering a zone, staying in a zone for a longer period of time or masking people or objects within the zone. The corresponding alarm type can be set for each rule.

As IPS NextGen VideoAnalytics supports 3D and georeferencing, the software can also control PTZ cameras. With 3D coordinates and IPS Dome Tracker, intruders can be tracked automatically without manual intervention.

Seeing the unseen with Hikvision HeatPro thermal cameras Environmental conditions are not always ideal for traditional security cameras, especially in case of scenarios where perimeter protection and fire detection are needed. What do you do when your images are affected by factors like darkness, foliage, snow or fog, which can obscure objects or people that should trigger a legitimate alarm. One very effective solution is the use of thermal signals.

ikvision’s HeatPro thermal cameras, finalists in the Benchmark Innovation Awards 2022 in the Surveillance Innovation (CCTV) category, are now in their third generation. The new versions include added-value features and a low cost of installation.

The spectrum of visible light is only a small part of a large band of detectable signals, or waves, that travel through matter. The electromagnetic spectrum contains radiation from various invisible wave types, each with a unique wavelength. Thermal radiation is one of these, featuring longer wavelengths than those of visible light, and is therefore generally invisible to the human eye.

Any object with a temperature above absolute zero emits a detectable amount of heat radiation; the higher an object or person’s temperature, the more radiation is emitted. Thermal cameras such as Hikvision’s HeatPro Series take advantage of those temperature differences between objects, making invisible thermal radiation ‘visible’ in the form of heat zone images.

All HeatPro models support temperature measurements in the range of -20 °C to 150°C, with an accuracy of ± 8°C. They offer

multiple temperature measurement rules (10 points, 10 regions, 1 line or full screen), allowing for greater flexibility and thus adaptability for a wide variety of different use scenarios. And because they operate by sensing an object’s heat radiation, they’re able to capture images 24/7, regardless of surrounding environmental circumstances.

That reduced expenditure is important, massively increasing the applications for thermal technology. In the past, thermal cameras were an expensive investment, but now, because of HeatPro’s costeffectiveness, thermal technology can help save on the cost of other equipment, such as PIR detectors, lights, and audible alert devices. Visualised temperature measurement helps double-check for problems and improves the efficiency of early detection and warning. The ability to detect temperature changes and trigger pre-alarms before a fire occurs can help to prevent significant damage.

The HeatPro series come with dual lenses: one optical and one thermal lens. The combination of the two provides a fusion image.

The optical lenses are made from polished germanium and can capture 8-14um infrared waves.

They’re rugged and resistant to corrosion, making them ideal for harsh environments and applications where there is constant exposure to the elements.

There are two resolution options to cater for longer or shorter camera distances. The 160 series has a 160×120 resolution that will cover up to 48 metres. The 256 Series offers a 256×192 resolution and can cover a distance of up to 77 metres.

The image reproduction of thermal cameras is not affected by lighting conditions. They operate just as well in extremely low light or even in no light at all.

Temperature anomalies can be quickly detected and verified with a visualised image. When the surface temperature of an object is abnormal, the camera immediately triggers an alarm for timely troubleshooting.

Protecting car parks is a practical example of how HeatPro cameras can be used. Because they utilise deeplearning video analytics, they can distinguish multiple targets accurately in all weather and light conditions, reducing false alarms. Those video analytics allow them to detect and classify vehicles and people separately.

Using HeatPro cameras for fire prevention can save huge amounts of money and lives in residential as well as commercial applications. Thermal cameras can identify changes in temperature outdoors, where a smoke alarm would be impractical. Smoke detectors only set off an alarm when they detect smoke, as you’d imagine; but by then it might be too late. A thermal camera can be a helpful supplement to traditional fire alarm equipment.

Heating equipment, as well as combustible materials, are the main causes of warehouse fires. When the surface temperature of that equipment or material is higher than normal, a thermal camera can immediately trigger an alarm for timely troubleshooting and intervention if required.

The system incorporates the patented PADARC with checks and balances for failsafe alarm delivery. Should any part of the delivery fail, the system is programmed to bypass the fault and move to an unprecedented number of backup systems to ensure you receive the alert. webeyeCMS is a fully audited system, recording time, date and operator instantly, so when and who answers the alert is instantly logged. webeyeCMS has integrated artificial intelligence (A.I.) into the platform, allowing alarms to be automatically handled if certain conditions are met. Integriti High Security (also known as Class V outside of EMEA) is a heavily end-toend encrypted version of the product, specifically designed to meet high-security requirements from the Government, Military, and Finance sectors.

Inception is Inner Range’s web-based, no software needed, security and access solution for single sites. It scales from 1 to 128 doors and has 3000 inputs, and is designed to make installation very easy. It also has excellent integration with CCTV.

To maintain a competitive edge, constant development is essential. Northwood explains that all Inner Range software development is done in-house. However, the company also works with 3rd party developers.

“We work in several ways when collaborating on an integration project depending on the complexity,” says

Northwood, “Both Inception and Integriti have an XML REST API, which in most cases is free to 3rd party developer partners, allowing them to integrate into our products easily.”

Inner Range collaborates on biometrics Inner Range has effectively integrated Idemia’s readers and solutions for acquiring Biometric data into its system.

Northwood explains, “Integriti supports connecting directly to individual biometric readers. When syncing directly to biometric readers, Users will only be synchronised to relevant readers, as determined by which readers a User has permission to access. This ensures the reader’s internal user database only contains the necessary users for the reader to function, preventing the internal databases on biometric readers from filling up and increasing the speed of biometric lookups on the devices. Biometric credentials can be generated and managed directly from a user’s ‘Acquire Card’ dialogue regardless of the connection mode, allowing for a simple and consistent UI for all biometric integrations. Once biometrics for a user is updated and the corresponding User is saved, the updated credentials will be synchronised to the configured biometric system or biometric readers as required.”

Overcoming roadblocks Troubles and tribulations are part of every path. Having worked for the company for 15 years, Northwood shares what areas of concern currently affect Inner Range.

“In Europe, the invasion of Ukraine has impacted sales and will continue to do so for some time as both are important markets for Inner Range. However, our growth in other areas will offset this issue. The global problems with transportation continue to be an issue with extended shipping times and costs. This means we have to carry a higher stock level to ensure our customers are well served, and growth is supported. Being part of the Wesco-Anixter business is a great advantage as we have access to a global network of warehousing facilities to locate stock.”
