SECURITY TECHNOLOGY AND INNOVATORS

February 2024 Welcome to the February issue of Benchmark magazine.

I

n this edition, we delve into the cutting-edge intersection of technology and security, exploring the transformative role of Artificial Intelligence in shaping the landscape of safeguarding assets and people. Our articles shine a spotlight on the revolutionary strides taken in integrating AI within the security sector. As artificial intelligence continues to evolve, we explore its applications in enhancing threat detection, response times, and overall system intelligence. In the realm of solution architectures, we are seeing a paradigm shift towards hybrid models that seamlessly combine on-premise, cloud, and edge technologies. As security projects evolve, we observe how these hybrid solutions offer unparalleled flexibility, scalability, and resilience, ensuring a robust defence against ever-changing threats. Total cost of ownership (TCO) on security solutions has long been a critical consideration for enterprises. In 2024, when budgets are tighter, it is important to consider what this truly means for the world of physical security.

Security systems are expected to be more dynamic and adaptable. They are also expected to be cyber-secure and help lower the impact of carbon footprint. TCO extends beyond the initial purchase price of security components and encapsulates the comprehensive expenses incurred throughout the entire lifecycle of a security system. TCO encompasses the hardware and software costs and factors in installation, maintenance, training, and potential upgrades or expansions. The big question for this year is, how can installers and system integrators help this clients maximise their security investment? As we navigate the intricate landscape of physical security and innovation in 2024, Benchmark magazine remains your go-to resource for staying ahead of the curve. Join us on this journey as we explore the forefront of technology, share industry best practices, and empower you with the knowledge needed to make informed decisions in an ever-evolving security landscape. Send us your news and opinions. We want to hear from you.

Five trends in video surveillance to watch in 2024 Hanwha Vision has identified the five trends in video surveillance to watch in 2024. Already commanding significant attention, these are set to take even greater prominence in 2024 as technology develops further and users put video systems to new and innovative business uses.

V

ideo surveillance technology has evolved over the past decade, and significant opportunities have now opened up for video users, as well as installers and integrators. Those who embrace the transformation of video – from single application security technology to a solution

that leverages AI and the cloud to help users meet wider business challenges – will reap considerable benefits. Indeed, this evolution of video technology, from its roots in security to taking pride of place in the business technology toolkit alongside 5G and the Internet of Things

Smarter Buildings help accelerate decarbonisation Research from Johnson Controls and Forrester Consulting reveals some of the biggest opportunities for business leaders looking to advance sustainability commitments. Buildings account for 40 per cent of global emissions1, which makes decarbonising the built environment one of the fastest ways to achieve net zero targets globally. According to the survey, sustainability is widely accepted as a business priority, and partnering is essential to achieving 2030 sustainability goals.

F

or leaders looking to quickly advance their net zero journey and make a real impact on global carbon reduction, buildings are the key enabler,” said Johnson Controls Chairman and CEO George Oliver. “This new research shows decision-makers worldwide understand sustainable buildings are better

for the balance sheet and external partners are invaluable in optimising buildings and measuring environmental impact. Solutions exist today that can remove the need for upfront capital, digitalise a building’s systems to provide actionable data, electrify systems to accelerate the energy transition and create

Enhancing efficiency and the student experience with HID mobile access control It’s boom time for higher education in the UK. Over 2.86 million students are enrolled in courses at the moment, with the demand for places high. Commentators estimate 30%+ growth with circa 1 million students applying by 2030. This is clearly excellent news for the 277 colleges and 166 universities which make up the UK’s higher education sector.

S

uch growth presents a whole raft of operational challenges for institutions, not least about how to manage student access—efficiently, effectively and securely. According to Paul Brady, HID’s End User Business Manager for Physical Access Control

(pictured right) this is complex as anyone working in a higher education IT, security services or estates departments will know. One of the primary challenges is the sheer size of institutions given they often have sprawling campuses. The user base adds

AI-based video solution monitors shipping traffic An AI-based video security system from Bosch Building Technologies is now logging every ship and boat entering or leaving Scheveningen Harbour in The Hague in the Netherlands. Bosch and BrainCreators developed a customised solution to register and classify shipping traffic automatically. Port control centre employees had to manually record the 80 or so vessels that

pass through the port every day from the window of the control centre. A key reason for investing in the intelligent security solution was the fear criminals would seek alternative routes through smaller ports like Scheveningen, since large Dutch and Belgian ports like Rotterdam and Antwerp have been more secure against smuggled goods for some time now. Hanwha Vision announces WiseDetector Hanwha Vision has launched WiseDetector, a machine-learning-based feature that can train video cameras to detect new object types according to a model defined by the user. This gives users greater flexibility in adapting object detection to their needs. WiseDetector is supported in P Series AI cameras and is licence-free. The tool provides customised solutions based on circumstantial requirements, allowing security teams to efficiently manage unique security or safety needs. It works effectively with detecting distinct objects. Some examples of objects it can be trained to detect are boxes posing a hazard on a shop floor, cones obstructing roads, or signs blocking corridors. The flexibility of the machine-learningbased detection also creates opportunities for safety and security teams to reinforce
