What does it mean to ‘know a word’?  recognize it (Do I recognize it visually and aurally?)  recall at will (Do I remember having seen it before? If so, do I remember the possible meaning(s) associated with it?)  relate it to an appropriate grammatical form (Is it a noun, verb? Can I use it in a sentence? Is it countable?)  use with correct collocation (Do I know which other words I generally use with it?)  pronounce it well (Can I say the word in isolation? What about connected speech?)  spell it correctly (Can I write this word?)  right formality level (Do I know when or in which situations I can use it?)  offspring (Can I use this word to form others?)  connotations and associations (Can I tell whether it will have a negative impact on the listener?)
