PART 39 EIGHTH IN- PE RS ON C ONT AC T , AUG. 2 5 , 19 64. C ONFE RENCE AT MASS ACHUSE T TS UNDERGROUND BASE : It was 1 : 0 0 A. M. As I sto od out in the cool Augus t night , I let my mind wande r ove r the past few pe rsonal contacts with my brothers from Korendo r. Each time we met , they had had something new in s to re fo r me . As I waited , my thoughts fo cuse d into one que s tion : what now? As Orii - Val had told me on the radio about a half hour befo re , this contact was going to be one of strictly information . If that we re the case , then why all this bother, when the radio would have serve d as well? As I was ponde ring this , a b rief tele pathic me ssage struck me - - - an o ccurence which I frankly admit is a novelty to me , so seldom doe s it o ccur. It was Orii , and all he told me was, " Y ou que stion too much . Wait and find out . " W E HEAD FOR T HE MASS AC HUSE T TS BASE VIA S PACE C AR : I hardly had time to conside r this when Orii droppe d out of the s ky ! He was flying his little pe rsonal craft , the one I had pilote d that fabulous day in August of 19 6 3 . As he touched down , the top poppe d open and , without he s itation , I boarde d . It felt good to s it in that be autiful little ship again , re acquainting myself with its many fine details. The top shut and , as we rose , I aske d him whe re we we re bound . He replie d , " T o the Mass achusetts Base . We have a me eting that you are to attend . " Well , that answere d all my que stions, exce pt one . What kind of mee ting? Nothing to do but "wait and find out . " We we re airbo rne fo r abo ut three minute s, when Orii stoppe d ove r a spot I had seen many time s befo re while driving about . I was about to ask why we stoppe d he re when the ground gave me the answe r, as it parted into a relatively small doo r, down into a lighte d passageway . We droppe d into i t and i t shut into its fo rme r invisibility . We went dow n abo ut thirty fe et ve rticall y , and arrive d at a long tunnel . I can 't say exactly how long it was, but it was ove r thre e mile s. We settle d down on a conve yo r belt and be gan a sho rt trip at ove r 60 miles pe r hour through the pas sage . It was about twenty feet wide and fifte en fe et high . Illumination was provide d b y pe riodic panels of Lumiglow on the ce iling. WE CHE C K IN AT T HE BASE : When we re ache d the end , Orii took out hi s se curity card and inserted it into the automatic de vice that came out of the w all and stoppe d next to him . When it was satisfie d that we

w e re all goo d and prope r, it went back into its panel , and the door in front o f us parte d in the middle and slid open . It re ve ale d a hangar, comparatively small in dimensions, w ith a numbe r of stalls such as I de scribe d in my account of January 4, 19 64. (See issue # 2 6 . - E d . ) We rode along these conveyo rs and w e re soon parked in an empty stall , the first one we came to . ( The compute r had che cke d to see which stalls we re ope n , and be rthe d us in the one neare st the doo r o n the far end of the hangar, abo ut a hundred fe et away . ) We got o ut and , whe n Orii had conne cte d the refueling hose , we walke d to the door. We ente re d a small re ception roo m which was e mpty at the time , but we we re being obs e rve d by a conspicuous tele scre e n camera oppo site the door. A voice from a loudspe ake r intone d , "Gre e tings, brothe rs. You will find a car waiting fo r you o utside the room . " As the voice spoke , a door appeare d in the wall next to the camera . It opened into a corridor whe re a smiling young man in an ele ctric car gre ete d us and motione d us to get in with him . Whe n we we re s e ate d , Orii told m e abo ut the meeting we w e re t o atten d . " This is the first i n a serie s of confe rence s t o be held at irregular inte rval s, by the people involve d in con trolling and coo rdinating what we are calling ' Proj e ct T e rra ' which, as yo u can tell by the name , is our program fo r your planet . Y ou will reco gnize some o f the peo ple , and others will b e strange rs t o yo u . Y o u will be intro duced t o all of the m , of course , and you are free to give the ir name s in your repo rt . . C ONFE RE NCE ROOM # 2 : " Among the m are seve ral maste rs, and you might be surprise d to find four women the re . They are spe cialists in the i r fields, as you will learn . " We had stoppe d at an elevato r doo r. In reply to a mental que stion , Orii told me , " No , this is a diffe rent one . " The doo r slid ope n and we drove in . Thre e levels low e r we s to ppe d and left the ele vato r. The hallway was short this time , abo ut 2 0 0 fe et long. About 15 0 feet along, we turne d off into a side are a whe re many of these cars we re parked . W e slid into an available space , and Orii and I proce e d e d t o the doo r at the e n d o f the hall , labeled "C onfe r ence Room #2 . " To the right of the door was a se curity card unit, which Orii took care of in sho rt o rde r . Whe n we went thro ugh this door, we ente re d a sort o f ve stibule with a doo r a t each e n d . W e went thro ugh the one on the left .

Ar ound the light g r e en walls was a var iety of ele ctronic de vic e s . The one outstanding fe ature was the lar ge c onfe rence table in the cent e r of the room . It was in the form of a huge ring , twenty feet ac r os s , divide d into twenty s e gments . E ach s e ction , s eparate d fr om the neighboring one s by a s mall divide r of Lumiglow , had a c ompute r fe e d unit , a r e adout , a c ommunication module , and a unique type of writing surface . When a button was pre s s e d , what e ve r one wrote on this s urfac e would re produc e on all the othe r writing s urfac e s , pr oviding an effe c tive me ans of transfe r r ing written ide as to othe r s without was ting time . Anothe r button c ould e r as e , or the imprint c ould be s tor e d in a magnetic tape on the r e c orde r unit in the far c orne r of the r oom , for future us e . CHAIRS AND TABLES FLOAT IN AIR-- DON ' T NEE D LEGS ! : D r awe r s below the table , for s toring s tatione ry and writing utens ils , c ame out at the touch of a button . The table its e lf was of a mahogany-like wood with a mir r or finish. S uddenly I notice d that the table had no s upports of any kind ! On the far ends of e ach s ide w all w e r e the two ten - foot c ompute r units , quiet as the flap of a butte r fly ' s wing . E ach had one red pilot light . No othe r c ontr ols w e r e vis ible on the m . The floor was c ar pete d in for e s t - g r e e n , with a de e p pile that felt like an extr e me ly thick lawn unde r foot , but with a s pringy r e s ilienc e no g r a s s affor ds . The boy ran almos t blindly toward the three from the ship . Thi s galvani ze d the Army man into action, as his hand plunge d to the pis tol in the hol s te r at hi s hip . He had it drawn when one of the three s pacemen rai s e d hi s hand and pointe d his las e r at the Army man . So help me , that fell ow was thrown twenty feet ac ros s the field, as if by a giant hamme r blow . He reeled and fell agains t the w ate r tank they had s et up for a show e r , and was s plashe d in wate r and mud as he s tretche d out on the g r ound . A s or r y s ight, but he de s e rve d it . The re s t of the s oldie rs panicke d and ran for the shelte r of the tre e s . A fourth s pac e man appe are d with a robe, which he put ove r the shoulde rs of the lad . T ogethe r they went back to the ship . The Army man had re vive d and was s itting s tunne d in the puddle fr om the s how e r tank, afraid to move for fe ar of having a repetition of that expe rience . Afte r the five pe ople had ente re d the s hip, the r e s t of the s oldie rs c ame out of hiding and gath e re d about their "advis or. " T ogethe r the y w atche d the ship take off and dis appe ar to the North . I was told that afte r the youth was tre ate d, he was r e turned to his ve ry grateful par e nts . U. S . PLANES FIRE AT SAUCER : The next s c ene was of a ground bas e for plane s . As the s auce r hove re d ove rhe ad, thre e plane s took off, s e e mingly on a r outine flight . The c ame ra s wung to a bombe r be ing loade d with we aponry . A quick z oom of the c ame ra indicate d that the s e plane s w e re being loade d w ith napalm and fire bombs c apable of wiping out s mall citie s , and I c an atte s t to the fact that radiation ins truments on board the s auce r indicate d the pre s ence of at le as t one atomic we apon . So intently w e re the s auc e r pe ople watching the bombe r, that they faile d to notic e that thre e plane s w e re making an attack run on the i r c raft . The c ame ra s wung around in time to catch the last plane rus hing toward the s pac e ship, with its machine guns blas ting away . By the time the s pac e c re w had pre pare d for a has ty departure , the thre e plane s w e re be ginning their s e c ond run .
