Let’s start by looking at the science, which suggests that the sheer scale of the universe makes it very likely that there is alien life out there. The theory is backed by the smartest man in the known universe, and when Stephen Hawking announces his belief in extra-terrestrial life, you have to agree it’s pretty likely. His show Encountering Intelligent Life gave further insight into the renowned astrophysicist’s views: “If civilisations take billions of years to evolve, but then vanish virtually overnight, then sadly we’ve next to no chance of hearing from them, they are simply too far away in space and time to reach, but there is one last possibility; that aliens that have avoided destroying themselves are already colonising the universe.”

However, Hawking’s pronouncements come with a warning; if aliens do exist it could be devastating to contact them. The impact of the introduction of an extra-terrestrial species could be as bad as Christopher Columbus’ impact on Native Americans, which saw a large share of the population wiped out through disease and violence.

Alien life might already exist among us That said, even if it’s tricky to track down alien life out there in the ether, there’s a possibility it might already be right here on earth: So-called “shadow life” unrelated to species as we know them may have been carried here by asteroids that crashed to earth thousands of years ago. These species could be hiding out in toxic arsenic lakes or in boiling deep sea hydrothermal vents, leaving scientists clueless that their biochemistry differs from ours.

Professor Paul Davies, a physicist at Arizona State University, told a conference that scientists needed to launch a “mission to earth” to discover these species: “It is entirely reasonable to expect we will find a shadow biosphere here on Earth. It could be right in front of our noses – or even in our noses – but nobody has actually taken the trouble to look.”

It is possible aliens could even be intermingled with carbon-based life. Davies cites a lake in California, which is rich in arsenic and includes microbes that derive their energy from the normally poisonous substance. They aren’t necessarily of alien origin, but it shows how ET could be a lot closer than we think.

Perhaps they might even be in Rutherford, Ohio, masquerading as the Solomons, getting into high jinks and trying to hide from their commander the Big Giant Head. Or at least that’s what it look like in the early noughties:

There’s evidence that aliens have already been in touch The first record of UFO sightings was in 1947, when Kenneth Arnold saw a group of high-speed objects flying near Mount Rainer, which he said were going thousands of miles an hour and moving like “like saucers skipping on water”.

Aliens might be being observed in a bunker in a Nevada desert right now. Area 51 is a well-known secret US military base 83 miles northwest of Las Vegas. You can take a tour bus to visit the sight, but you’re not supposed to take photos. Depending on who you talk to it could be used for the development and testing of experimental aircraft or the slightly more serious reverse engineering of crashed alien spacecraft. And then there’s this guy, who apparently crashed in Roswell (we’ll get onto that in a moment).

There’s might be a pretty reasonable explanation for all the sightings of bizarre aircraft. In the 50s, civilian aircraft generally flew under 20,000 feet and military aircraft 40,000 feet. The new U-2 began flying at above 60,000 feet, likely confusing residents near the base. Another new airplane, the OXCART, had an unprecedented disklike fuselage and travelled at 2,000-plus mph. Roswell: The most famous UFO crash Roswell, which is about 1,000 miles south east from Area 51, was home to probably the most famous UFO incident. It was sparked by the crash of the Air Force’s Project Mogul surveillance balloon, which was involved in nuclear detection. The military lied and said it was a weather balloon to disguise its purpose, prompting conspiracy theories to ignite years later and accounts describing the debris as “nothing made on this earth” to surface.

Documents from the FBI’s Washington Field Office, who sent a memo concerning flying saucers to the FBI’s director in March 1950, said: “They were described as being circular in shape with raised centres, approximately 50 feet in diameter. Each one was occupied by three bodies of human shape but only 3 feet tall, dressed in metallic cloth of a very fine texture. Each body was bandaged in a manner similar to the blackout suits used by speed flyers and test pilots.”

Interestingly it was the United States Airforce that coined the term Unidentified Flying Object (UFO) in the 50s as a result of much of this activity.

What if it’s the aliens that are doing the experimenting?

It stands to reason that if aliens had developed the technology to reach earth, they’d be the ones examining us, not the other way around.Events that are reported as alien abductions are often characterised by bright lights, sudden motions and the lack of sound. They also tend to happen to rural folk in the wilds of US deserts.

Most psychologists who have investigated this phenomenon suggest a common experience known as sleep paralysis may be the culprit. This causes people to experience a temporary immobility and a belief that they are being watched, hence the propensity to being controlled or experimented on by other-worldly creatures.

Aliens in films Given the size of the universe the likelihood is that extra-terrestrial life has existed at some point, but we’re unlikely to contact them. There is the added risk of ending humanity, should we make contact with a hostile species.
