Forewords Finnish industry has earned a reputation as a reliable supplier of high quality offshore products since the early days of the North Sea economic development. Today, offshore industry remains a major business for Finnish technology companies. Prime Minister Sipilä’s Government has approved programs outlining a broad set of measures aiming to enhance further the competitiveness of the Finnish marine industries. Amongst these measures is strengthening export financing and development of marine and offshore know-how. As a part of this, the Finnish Funding Agency for Innovation (Tekes) launched in 2014 a 100 million euro “Arctic Seas” programme which will speed up the development and introduction of new technology and services in the markets of harsh conditions such as Arctic maritime transport and offshore industry. In addition, the Ministry of Employment and the Economy has a marine

industry programme e.g. helping Finnish SMEs to identify opportunities in offshore industry. If you need reliable partners onshore or offshore, Finland offers a competitive option. Building the offshore future In spite of the low price of oil and gas, the offshore industry is still a very attractive customer for offshore technology and service provider companies. For instance, Norwegians will continue development projects in the Barents Sea, and are planning onshore oil terminals. However, the budgets of the development projects should be more cost effective than before. This means that it is more important to provide solutions which are not only sustainable but also reasonable in life cycle expenses, and which use raw materials effectively.

Finnish marine industries have put particular emphasis on Arctic issues. In order to provide excellent and competent service to large enterprises a team was created in Finland. Â A group of 15 companies formed Team Arctic Finland in 2013. Members of the group were interested and experienced in Arctic business and they understood that the market potential could be realized more effectively together. The target of these companies is to provide integrated solutions to selected projects.

The key success element to gain market share is smart maritime technology, in which Finnish companies have a very competitive advantage. Finnish marine companies are also eager to respond to the challenge of budget cuts. They are constantly developing solutions that are more cost efficient than before.

Moreover, Finnish companies are forerunners for instance, in environmentally friendly solutions, such as LNG, energy efficient design and solutions for oil spill recovery to complex offshore support vessels, not forgetting comfort accommodation facilities.

Furthermore, low season is perfect timing to develop new marine products and services, invest in R & D, and strengthen the whole offshore cluster. Finnish companies are aware of this and are rapidly developing new state-of-the-art solutions. Â Â These developments are possible only because the base of maritime competence in Finland is very strong. Finnish offshore companies guarantee high Nordic quality standards, timely deliveries, and support from the vast Nordic network, not to mention that companies operate globally. Especially, the Finnish marine industry is excellent in building complex products and solutions: it is appreciated around the world for state-of-the-art Arctic competence and concept development for different kinds of vessels.

Research supports the efforts of Finnish marine companies. One of the main focus of the research remains to be offshore and Arctic and Antarctic technologies. Operations in the harsh and demanding arctic conditions, and for example the winterization challenges, remain to be among the main research topics. Safety is also a high priority in Finnish research. Continuous development ensures Finnish industry can offer top class products with safe and environmentally sound solutions for the offshore market.
