Welcome to Prize Fest!

We love you so much! How much? Hold your arms as far apart as you can... Yes, that much! Why do we love you? Because you’ve been an essential part of making Prize Fest one of Earth’s most amazing celebrations of film, food, and music.

In 2012, this all started as a crazy idea called Louisiana Film Prize, and the crazier idea to give away $50,000 cash, the world’s largest cash award for a short film. Over 600 projects have been made for the Film Prize, over $15 million dollars in economic development has been created, and over to $400,000 in prize money has been given away.

We have also added Music Prize (2013) and, most recently, Food Prize (2015), which brings musicians and chefs into the same competitive and energetic, culture-shifting event. These events have shined light on the nurturing spirit of this community.

Our organization, Film Prize Foundation, also brought the Startup Prize in 2014 - a competition aimed at educating entrepreneurs. In 2016 we started Film Prize Jr., which incentivized 26 high school teams to make short films.

We want to make NW Louisiana a more kickass place to be, but we couldn’t have done it without you. YOU ARE THE PRIZE! 2

Food Prize Year 3!

This year, Food Prize reaches for culinary awesomeness and joins its rightful place at the table of Prize events by bringing four incredible nights of local and celebrity chefs cooking for your culinary pleasure. It’s a non-stop festival of food and drink like none other in the entire region.

Who can attend Food Prize?

Each Food Prize event is ticketed separately, but there are two events open to the general public. However, if you simply must do it all, you can buy a Gold Pass which gets you into all four nights along with all the film and music events!

Local Chefs Compete for the Food Prize Golden Fork Award Five local chefs will compete for culinary stardom. Four chefs advanced by creating exemplary meals for the Food Prize’s Society of the Golden Fork Dinner Club. One chef advanced to the finals by being the Shreveport Time’s Peoples Choice.

Jacob Dowlen Mouser

Jacob’s eclectic style reflects the many adventures his career has taken him on, be it catering for the film industry, traveling with cirque du soleil, or working in restaurants. Currently Sous Chef at Frank’s Napoletana, he’s never felt more at home.

Eleazar Mondragon

Eleazar was born and raised in Mexico where he was inspired by family cooks. He began culinary school at BPCC in 2010, then Le Cordon Bleu in 2011. Eleazar is co-owner of Ki Mexico with his brother where many family members also work.

Melissa Stewart

Melissa is a private chef and owner of Now You’re Cooking. She provides in-home catering, cooking classes and meal prep services to the Shreveport-Bossier area.

Her food is unfussy, fresh and vibrant with a focus on regional and seasonal ingredients.

John Strand

John is the owner of Accents Personal Chef Service.

Strand specializes in fine dining, weekly prepared meals and catered events. With over 32 years of experience, Chef Strand guarantees an unforgettable culinary experience wherever you are.

George Beaird

George started his gastronomic journey to meet girls in Home Ec. He continued his culinary education at BPCC, then apprenticed at Opryland Hotel in Nashville, Tennessee. His formal education complete, he returned to conquer his hometown.

Food Prize presents Come and Get It! A Food & Wine Experience Wednesday, October 4, from 6pm-10pm Remington Suite Hotel

An incredibly amazing mosaic of food, spirits, wine and friends.

Seven nationally recognized chefs will prepare awesomely delicious tastings that will be paired with craft beer and cocktails, amazing wines, and awesome people.

The evening will also feature the famous “One Pot” chef relay.

Five local chefs will join together in one collective culinary force to create one pot of something awesome for the crowd.

Food Prize Demonstration Lunch with Chef Tristen Epps Thursday, October 5, from 11am-1pm Remington Suite Hotel

Troy Johnson and Tom Ramsey will host The Taste finalist Chef Tristen Epps as he presents a cooking demonstration you won’t soon forget. Wine will be paired with the meal.

Battle for the Golden Fork: Local Chef Showdown [FREE] Friday, October 6, 7:00pm

Food Prize Tent at Festival Central Five local chefs selected by Society of the Golden Fork and a public poll in the Shreveport Times will be given a secret set of ingredients and just 45 minutes to create a brand new dish for our Celebrity Judges to critique. One winner will be selected and will win $5,000 cash and the local culinary world’s highest honor: The Golden Fork Trophy!

Music Prize Turns 5!

Music Prize began in 2013, and we can’t think of a better way to celebrate than continuing to bring local, regional, and national musicians to the stage once more in a fantastic, beautiful way that downtown Shreveport hasn’t seen in decades. By attending Music Prize, you are a making local (and indie) music history!

Who can attend Music Prize?

Anyone of any age with a Music Pass, Combo Pass, VIP Pass, or Gold Pass may attend Music Prize events. Tickets are on sale at the Box Office at Tipitina’s Music Co-Op (700 Texas Street).

Locals Showcase Prize Fest Opening Party at Voodoo Cafe [21+] Thursday, October 5, Doors at 6pm.

The first night of Music Prize is incredibly special. Four local musicians will compete for your vote for the Music Prize trophy!

The winner will also play Friday night with Larkin Poe! Voting is easy. Each Music Pass holder will be given a voting token. Drop the token in the box of your favorite band. The votes will be tallied and a winner will be announced that night determined by combining audience and judge votes!

Rella

Tyler Christiana, Alex Stokes, Cade Vanderhoeven, Chris Ball This progrock band of twentysomethings have toured throughout the south predominantly in Louisiana and Texas, and released their first self-titled EP in 2016.

Ricky Latt

An Arkansas native who now resides in Shreveport.

He raps, sings, composes, plays instruments. His experience with relationships and his spiritual background is the backbone of his music. His project “Welcome To Soulville” was releaed in 2017.

Star Chamber

Amanda, Christopher & Anthony Tamaccio, and Corey Bissell This group plays vibrant, beautiful, and gritty alt rock.

The members have been playing together for 5 years and released the album “Seeing Circles” in July of 2017.

The Wall Chargers

Landon Miller, Jerry Lee II, Dylan Hillman, Josh Waldrop, Ben Densmore, and Cory Craig This band’s sound draws from western and gospel with rhythm and roots flair, where thoughtful lyricism meets well taught instrumentation. Their album “Stargazer” was released in fall of 2016.

Music Prize: Indie Collision at The Prize Fest Big Top [All Ages] Friday, October 6. Doors at 7pm.

This second night of Music Prize will kick off at the new Music Prize Big Top (700 Block of Texas Street). This raucous night will feature Locals Showcase winner, last year’s Music Prize winner The Bristol Hills, and headlined by the national roots rock sensation, sister duo Larkin Poe. Inside the Music Prize Tent, you will be able to go toe to toe with all three bands. The tent is all ages but will feature a bar for those with a valid ID over 21. It will also feature the Music Prize VIP Room, where for $75, you get a ticket to Music Prize and all the alcohol you can drink!

Larkin Poe

This sister duo from Atlanta, Georgia is one of the hottest roots rock bands out there. Touted as the “little sisters of the Allman Brothers,” Larkin Poe just played the influential Pilgrimage Fest in Nashvillle and earned “Best Discovery Band” at Glastonbury Fest.

The Bristol Hills

The Music Prize 2016 champions are one of psych rock’s new darlings. After buying a van with their Music Prize money, they set the country on fire with their first national tour. They’re back, and The Bristol Hills are ready to get loud.

Locals Showcase Winner

The winner from Thursday night’s Music Prize Locals Showcase will open Indie Extravaganza with a bang.

If you missed the showcase or just can’t wait to hear them again, this is your chance to hear the next great act out of Shreveport and Northwest Louisiana.

Royal Teeth

This Louisiana band has honed itself down to its core chemistry, musicians who know what they want to do and how to do it. But they also play with pure joy, ease, and love of what they’re doing. Their new EP Amateurs is available now.

Belle Game

Hailing from Vancouver, their new album Fear/Nothing, released in September 2017, saw the band focusing more than ever on electronica, experimenting with synth, atmospheri drums, and dream pop of the 80s.

Walker Lukens

This artist’s soulful, emotive tenor and alt-pop songwriting have prompted comparisons to everyone from Harry Nilsson to Tom Waits and Pavement. His album, Tell it to the Judge, released in September 2017.

Maybe it’s the high-energy “Plugged In” that almost gives you a runner’s high just by listening to it. Or maybe it’s the perfect concoction of surf, rock, and pop that make their tracks so sticky sweet and irresistible.

Bantam Foxes

Though the trio bills themselves as garage rock, they’re a multifaceted group that draws as much from the hiss and fuzz of a laid back jam session as the stringent composition work they perfected at Loyola.

Has it really been six years? Yes, yes it has. We have been bringing you the coolest shorts festival in the world (certainly the largest) featuring up and coming filmmakers from our community and around the country. There is no comparison. This is the Film Prize. The one and only.

What do I have to do?

Attendees with a Film, Combo, Gold, or VIP Pass can see the films and vote for the $50,000 winner. You must see ALL 20 SHORT FILMS by seeing screenings of both the Teal and Orange slates. Get your pass punched by an usher as you exit a slate.

How to Vote for the Film Prize Winner In order to vote, you must have a Festival Pass and you must see all 20 short films. The 20 films are divided into 2 programs of 10 films each. These programs are “Orange Slate” and “Teal Slate”.

Once you have seen one slate of films (you may watch them in any order you choose), get your Festival Pass punched by an usher immediately after the screening and before you leave the venue. You must have been present at the venue for the entire screening. No late entries will be permitted and those leaving early will not be allowed to have their pass punched. A brief intermission will accompany each slate after the first five films have been shown for nature calls and concession purchases.

After you have seen both slates and you have had your pass punched, you may cast your ballot at an Official Film Prize Ballot Station. One person. One Ballot. One vote.

All Louisiana Film Prize ballot results are tallied and certified by Heard McElroy and Vestal, an independent auditing firm.

Kim Adelman

Kim is the author of Making It Big in Shorts. She produced 19 short films that won 30+ awards and played over 150 film festivals worldwide, including the Sundance Film Festival four years in a row.

Carlos Aguilar

Originally from Mexico City, Carlos was chosen as one of 6 young film critics to partake in the first Roger Ebert Fellowship organized by the Sundance Institute and Indiewire in 2014. Aguilar’s work has appeared in prestigious publications such as Indiewire, MovieMaker Magazine, Filmmaker Magazine, Variety Latino, among others.

Tim Anderson

Tim is an award-winning producer as well as the Programming Coordinator for the Florida Film Festival and the Enzian Theater. The Florida Film Festival is accredited as a qualifying festival for the Oscars® in the Live Action, Documentary, and Animated Short film categories.

Sharon Lee Badal

Sharon is vice president of filmmaker relations and shorts programming for Tribeca. She has been with the festival since its inception in 2001 and has produced special projects for Tribeca since 1999.

Jim Brunzell, III

Jim is the Program Director for the Austin Gay & Lesbian International Film Festival (aGLIFF). He is also the festival director for the music film festival Sound Unseen in the Twin Cities, MN, which was just named “One of the 25 Coolest Film Festivals in the World for 2016” by MovieMaker Magazine.

Rainy Kerwin

Rainy is the writer, director, producer and star of the The Wedding Invitation, a film she wrote with the goal of creating great comedic roles for women.

She is the founder of It’s Raining Films productions and the platform BuyWomen.com, a site dedicated to films by women.

Destri Martino

Destri Martino is a 20-year veteran of independent film with writing and directing credits that include over 200 corporate videos, the web sitcom Mixed Blooms, and the short animated film The Director.

A film publicist by trade for over 15 years, Maureen currently serves as the head of publicity for the Brooklyn Academy of Music’s Cinématek. Before BAM, she was head of regional publicity and film festival bookings at Magnolia Pictures for nearly 5 years.

Tara McPherson

Tara is Associate Professor of Critical Studies at the University of Southern California’s School of Cinematic Arts, a core faculty member of USC’s innovative practice-based Ph.D., and an affiliated faculty member in the American Studies and Ethnicity Department.

Linda Olszewski

Linda joined Shorts International in January 2006 to oversee acquisitions of the Oscar Shorts Theatrical/VOD/iTunes releases. She has served on over 100 international film fest juries and panels throughout the world, offering distribution deals and Oscar qualification.

Gerard Jude Prest

Originally from Shreveport, Gerard has directed and produced hundreds of hours of scripted and non-scripted broadcast, syndicated, cable, features and international programming for networks such as ABC, CBS, FOX, PBS, Sony Pictures, SYFY, 20th Century Fox, and many more.

Kristy Puchko

Kristy is a New York-based entertainment journalist whose work has appeared in Vanity Fair, Time Out New York, Vulture, Pajiba, Spinoff Online, and Cinema Blend. She’s also a co-host of the movie review video podcast Popcorn and Prosecco.

Paul Sloop

Paul Sloop has headed up the selection of short films for the Cleveland International Film Festival since 2003. During his time at CIFF he has helped the festival grow their short film programs from just over 80 short films in 11 programs in 2003 to over 180 short films in 30 programs in 2017.

Jacques Thelemaque

Jacques co-founded the Filmmakers Alliance in 1993 and built the grassroots collective of filmmakers into an important independent filmmaking resource. He has overseen the production of hundreds of films and developed an impactive filmmaking support program.

Kenny, who was born in Shreveport, Louisiana, is a highly-accomplished American guitarist, singer, and songwriter. He has been nominated for a Grammy five times, won countless music awards, and experienced significant commercial success both as a blues artist and a young musician.

Chris Trovero

Chris is a manager and consultant from Los Angeles, helping shape the the careers of many up and coming bands. He has worked as a marketing director for Epitaph, Warner Bros., and Interscope Records where he worked with bands like Weezer, New Found Glory, My Chemical Romance, and more.

Randy Nichols

Randy has guided many artists to several Gold records, Grammy nominations, and overseen releases and sold out tours on six continents. His acts have seen a combined sales of over 3 million records and $10 million plus in merchandise sales.

Kathy Valentine

Kathy is a musician and songwriter best known as a member of The Go-Go’s, who made music history as the first all-female band to have a #1 album in the U.S.. She has maintained a career in music through songwriting, recording, performing, and touring as well with the blues/rock group The Bluebonnets.

Mikel Rouse

Mikel is an American composer. He has been associated with a downtown New York City movement known as “totalism”, and is best known for his operas. He uses complex rhythmic techniques derived from world music, the avant-garde and minimalism, including a technique he calls “counterpoetry”.

Jason is a Shreveport native who cooks with a passion for showing off the region that molded him. He owns and operates Wine Country Bistro, Zocolo Eatery, Southern Fork Catering, Parish Taceaux, and Wine Country Bottle Shops.

Regina Charboneau

Regina has worked as a camp cook in the bush of Alaska, created restaurants in San Francisco, and been chef de cuisine on a set of luxurious railway cars.

Her nightclub Biscuits & Blues won multiple WC Handy awards.

Jeremy Conner

Born in Alabama, Jeremy began his career in the kitchens of Pensacola before flourishing as a chef in Lafayette. His diversified perspective on Southern food and Gulf Coast seafood flavors allows him to craft his own unique cuisine.

Tristen Epps

Tristen, born in Trinidad, is a visionary chef with an eye for avant-garde dishes and local sustainable products. He is a member of the American Culinary Federation (ACF), placing 9 times in competitions, with three 1st place wins.

Alex Harrell

Alex was head chef at French Quarter bistro Sylvain, serving thoughtful contemporary American fare. Now he pairs his experience with seasonal, accessible products with his skills in the kitchen at his restaurant, Angeline.

Ryan Hughes

Starting as an apprentice at the famous La Maisonette in Cincinnati, Ryan has earned national accolades as Executive Chef at one of the South’s most famous French bistros, Café Degas.

Troy Johnson

Troy is a former music journalist who turned to food writing in 2007, and Food Network tapped him to host his own series, “Crave.” Since 2011, he’s been a regular judge on “Guy’s Grocery Games” with Guy Fieri, and judged Iron Chef.

PK Newby

Dr. Newby is a scientist, gastronome, and author with more than 20 years of experience researching diet-related diseases. She was one of the “best undiscovered cooks” and the last woman standing on ABC’s The Taste.

Tom Ramsey

Tom is a chef, sommelier, writer and media personality living in Jackson, MS. At his “day jobs” he hosts pop-up restaurants for his company stäge and writes about food & travel. He was a quarterfinalist on Season 3 of ABC’s The Taste.
