WHY WE DO WHAT WE DO EVOLVING CREATIVES, ENGAGING CONSUMERS, AND BUILDING A COMMUNITY

The true test of any community is its willingness to be open to new ideas, new people, new cultures, and new opportunities. Encouraging and enabling citizens to engage in activities which broaden their view of what is possible is key to building a community that is both more tolerant and more ambitious. By expanding our cultural boundaries and experiences together, we can nurture a new identity that empowers locals to reach their full potential and attracts others to this area to do the same. We believe that this is what will make us the city and community we were meant to be.

BIG GOALS FOR 2021

INVIGORATE CREATIVE ENTREPRENEURSHIP

MENTORSHIP WITH NATIONAL PROFESSIONALS

CULTIVATE A MARKET FOR A CREATIVE ECONOMY

Between 20 and 30% of the Caddo Parish economy is considered to be held by the Creative Class. Our economy needs these entrepreneurs to succeed. The Prize model invigorates this much-needed sector in northwest Louisiana by creating incentives for local Creators to step up their game while inviting artists from across the world to fill our 21st century market needs.

In order to bring the highest level of engagement and knowledge about their economic opportunity, we invite mentors from across the globe to educate and elevate our Creatives through workshops, roundtables, and one-on-one connections, ensuring our community’s Creative Entrepreneurs are receiving the best and most current industry guidance.

Without a knowledgeable customer base driving demand for the products and services that Creative Entrepreneurs bring to the market, we leave economic gains on the table. By inviting the community to participate in creative consumption through our events, we can increase the number of discerning customers ready to engage with the economy.

3

A DECADE OF IMPACT Since its inception, the Prize Foundation has brought over $25 million of economic impact to our community, hosted tens of thousands of people at our events, relocated creative individuals to our city, fostered cultural awareness, elevated local businesses, created new ones, and put Shreveport and northwest Louisiana on the pedestal it deserves.

PRIZE IN THE TIME OF COVID HOW THE PRIZE PERSEVERED DURING 2020

When the pandemic hit, many in our field closed their doors, some for the last time. Festivals shut down, mentorship programs canceled, and communities were stuck at home, just when they needed connection the most. It was a potential disaster for all. But that’s not the way we do things at the Prize. Instead of closing shop, the amazing staff at the Prize Foundation banded together, pivoted, and made a critical year one of our best yet.

IN 2020, WE CREATED...

- A daily online show, PrizeCast, which now has over 300,000 views. - Online mentor sessions for creatives, entrepreneurs, and small businesses. - A world-class, state-wide online student film festival and competition. - Prize Fest 2020 Online Edition which featured film, food, music, and fashion. - A global audience for Prize Fest with viewers from 37 states and 9 countries. - A sense of continuity with artists, businesses, and community partners.

FILM PRIZE THE ORIGINAL PRIZE COMPETITION

Our vision for a better community started with the largest annual cash prize for a short film on Earth. To compete, filmmakers must create their short film in a specificed geography. For 2021, in partnership with Louisiana Film and Entertainment Association (LFEA) and Louisiana Economic Development (LED), the contest is statewide. Twenty films are selected and screened at Prize Fest where the audience and a panel of judges select the winner. The Top 5 films receive an international distribution deal, and select filmmakers receive a grant towards their next Film Prize project. This formula has resulted in the creation of over 800 short film projects which equate to well over 100 feature films of content. These Creators have gone on to win awards and praise at other nationally-recognized festivals and even become Oscar® qualified.

INCENTIVIZING PRODUCTION AND ENGAGEMENT

BUILDING A LASTING, SUSTAINABLE FILM COMMUNITY

CONNECTING FILMMAKERS WITH INDUSTRY PROS

Sometimes an incentive is all someone needs to step outside of their comfort zone and take a chance to do something amazing. Our cash prize — the largest cash prize for a short film in the world — is an incredible motivator to Film Creatives and ensures that we are able to discover hidden local talent and attract outside competitors to our community.

Film Prize has done more than just attract Creative Entrepreneurs to make their films in northwest Louisiana, the endeavor has helped these men and women find a home here. We’re incredibly proud of the fact that filmmakers from Austin, Atlanta and beyond have moved to Shreveport/ Bossier because the Prize has shown them the beauty and spirit of our city.

It’s called Show Business, not Show Art. We believe that arts and culture are economic tools for both the Creatives and the entire product pipeline — from conceptual development to production and exhibition. We connect our filmmakers and their teams with industry experts and critics to ensure they have access to the information that will help them refine and market their craft.

FILM PRIZE JR PREPARING THE NEXT GENERATION

No plan for the future of our community can be complete without bringing the future entrepreneurs into the fold. Film Prize Junior — the middle school and high school version of the award-winning Film Prize — does just that. Students compete for scholarships, educational institutions are rewarded with grants for equipment, and teachers are incentivized with cash prizes. Since its first year, Film Prize Junior has become a statewide competition in partnership with Louisiana Film and Entertainment Association (LFEA), cementing an intra-state coalition that aims to cultivate the next generation of Creative Entrepreneurs.

RESHAPING THE NARRATIVE OF STUDENTS’ FUTURES

CREATING OPPORTUNITIES FOR EDUCATORS

DELIVERING CAREERAGNOSTIC SKILL SETS TO STUDENTS

In some educational settings, the path of learning is often on rails, focused on meeting the deadlines to pass standardized tests and college applications. Film Prize Junior opens a window into a world driven by Creative Entrepreneurship that allows students to see possible career paths they may not have considered before. Even a glimpse into non-traditional career paths can change their perspective on life forever.

Teachers want nothing more than for their students to succeed and not all students are interested in sports or debate team or theater. Film Prize Junior gives teachers yet another avenue for engagement that utilizes young peoples’ understanding of video media and virtual storytelling, meeting them where they are while sideloading important life skills.

Film Prize Junior provides an opportunity for students to engage in a large nontraditional competition project that demands collaboration, negotiation, project management, creativity, and independent skill development. Armed with the knowledge of what they are capable of, Film Prize Junior students can graduate more ready for the workforce or entrepreneurship.

FOOD PRIZE CREATING A WORLD-CLASS FOOD SCENE

While the celebration at the Food Prize is one of most fun and delicious in the country, there is a bigger goal for us. We have worked incredibly hard to build the culinary community and now, in the middle of difficult times, we are working our tails off to retain, sustain and grow that food scene. That said, this year’s Food Prize programming is our most ambitious ever. We are all familiar with Southern cuisine, but as our community evolves, so too must our palate. Exploration of new foods and new traditions is the perfect way to welcome and celebrate new residents and reveal unseen cultures that exist in our community. Breaking bread is a time-honored tradition that expands minds, hearts, and bellies.

CELEBRATING LOCAL EXCELLENCE IN THE CULINARY ARTS

MENTORSHIPS WITH NATIONALLYRENOWNED CHEFS

WORKING TO ELEVATE LOCAL CULINARY CULTURE

An accessible but challenging diverse food culture is key to breaking down barriers, and no one is better suited to bring that to life than local Culinary Creatives. Chefs compete for our grand prize through the Society of the Golden Fork dinner series, a semifinals event, and a grand final showdown called The Battle for the Golden Fork judged by national Celebrity Chefs.

Food Prize attracts nationallyrenowned chefs to our city for Prize Fest. This year, we are creating mentorship programs that will connect those chefs with our local restaurant community and guide them through these precarious times. These relationships will come together in-person for Weekend 2 at Prize Fest 2021 at the Food Prize Come and Get It! event.

An important component of building a community that is attractive to tourism and new business is a strong food culture. Food Prize was designed to energize, educate and activate our restaurant and chef community. Through our mentorship programs, events and competitions, Food Prize has helped establish northwest Louisiana as a food capital on the rise.

STARTUP PRIZE ELEVATING BUSINESSES WITH COMPETITION

Though most of our family of competitions are focused on cultural sectors, the Prize recognizes the importance of the startup, regardless of the product. Startup Prize captures everything from tech startups to mom and pop stores, biomedical and energy to manufacturing and apps. We connect these entities with world-class mentors from around the world in both small and large group sessions to ensure that entrepreneurs have the edge they need not only to get off the ground, but to succeed in an ever-shifting business environment. No incubator or accelerator does it like Startup Prize.

NATIONALLY-UNIQUE MODEL FOR ELEVATING ENTREPRENEURS

CREATING A PIPELINE FOR LOCAL AND NATIONAL STARTUPS

CONNECTING PROFESSIONALS WITH LOCAL SERVICES

Accelerators, incubators, and startup competitions are a dime a dozen. So why do entrepreneurs consistently call Startup Prize the most unique and fulfilling entrepreneurial experience? We provide an opportunity for mentorship and fellowship that are often set aside in favor of day-to-day operations. Our intense retreat model increases retention and provides meaningful professional development.

All startups that pass through Startup Prize are provided with opportunities to engage with other startup-focused organizations in our community from the Entrepreneur Accelerator Program (EAP) to Cohab, Shreveport’s downtown incubator. No matter where a startup is in its development, Startup Prize ensures that everyone can find a home to grow their business.

Our community has some of the most talented professionals in the country. From legal services, to accounting, marketing, consulting, and product development, we link startups with a variety of service providers that show our city and region are open for business, want their business, and are capable of meeting the needs of entrepreneurs at almost any scale.

MUSIC PRIZE REBUILDING OUR MUSIC SCENE

Music is a cornerstone of Shreveport and northwest Louisiana history. From Leadbelly and Hank Williams Jr. to Kix Brooks, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, and The Residents, our community has been a platform for incredibly successful musicians since the beginning of broadcast radio. Music Prize continues that legacy by providing local and regional artists an opportunity to perform and grow through mentorship with industry professionals, fellowship with other musicians, and the cultivation of a market for live music. Our first-ever winner of Music Prize was AJ Haynes who subsequently started her band, Seratones, which was named as one of the top bands at SXSW 2019 by Rolling Stone Magazine.

PROGRAM STATS - 300+ musician participants - 2 local bands signed - Grammy affiliation

FROM THE GARAGE TO ROLLING STONE MAGAZINE

MENTORSHIP WITH NATIONAL PROFESSIONALS

REBUILDING OUR REGION AS A MUSIC MECCA

Music is made to be heard and there’s no better platform in our community to be heard than Music Prize at Prize Fest. Our model of competition and mentorship provides musicians the opportunities to chase their sound and take artists to new heights. We want to see the musicians in our community find fulfillment and success in their craft, no matter their ambitions.

Just as important as playing music is professional development. Any band that wants to grow needs to understand the ins and outs of an ever-evolving music industry and have access to the minds that can deliver that to them. We require all artists to attend a conference to break them out of the garage and put them on a path to a career as a musician.

This year, the Music Prize refocuses our efforts on helping northwest Louisiana regain its place as the city and region who introduced talents like Elvis to the world. Through our unique industry conference/showcase model, we intend to rediscover the magic that put our city on the map as one of the original capitals of live music.

FASHION PRIZE WALKING THE FASHION RUNWAY

In its second year, the Fashion Prize hosted an online presentation of 7 local designer’s collections. Each designer’s collection was showcased and filmed in a different location, and also included behind the scenes footage, interviews with the designers and commentary from the judges. For the third year, we intend to energize our local design scene and, at the same time, take Fashion Prize to the nation. Our new plan is to connect all of our designers through the Internet and provide them all with mentorship and help build our community as a fashion design Mecca.

PROGRAM STATS - 14 designer competitors

- 70+ models and other artists - Interstate collaboration with mentors and mentorships

2020 STATS - 100% women designers - 58% minority designers

- Largest viewership ever - First immigrant winner

BRINGING FASHION TO THE FORE IN OUR COMMUNITY

MENTORSHIP WITH NATIONAL PROFESSIONALS

CREATING DEMAND FOR A FASHION MARKETPLACE

As we enter a decade of film, music, and food elevation through Prize, the evolution of this effort demands inclusion of more Creatives. Fashion Prize, which started life as the Fashion Project by The Agora Borealis, is a natural extension of the Prize family that promises to bring even more tangible products to the cultural fore and, eventually, to the marketplace.

Building on the winning strategy developed for past Prize competitions, Fashion Prize stands on the foundation of connecting budding Creatives with industry professionals from across the country, creating opportunities for constructive criticism necessary for growth and delivering direct mentorship opportunities for winners.

When thinking about Creative Entrepreneurship, it’s important to develop not just the skills and artistry to bring products to competition, but also to create the demand and capacity to produce products to be sold — both locally and for export. We will facilitate this process by partnering with local outlets and forming partnerships in other markets.

Beyond the radiant joy the festival exudes, and the way it gives back to its community, it’s fast becoming one of the best platforms I can imagine for an emerging filmmaker. Their massive prize is life-changing money. It’s the kind of award that doesn’t just look good on your website or bio blurb, but that can prove the start of a full-length feature or a production company. Mark my words: within this decade we’ll see a major filmmaker rise out of the LA Film Prize.

It is my hope that this festival will continue to grow and garner the support it so richly deserves. In supporting this festival, one is supporting the arts, culture and job creation and growth. I look forward to seeing this festival becoming the ‘go to’ festival of films and music.
