The Luxury Space
JUNE 2023 ISSUE
A few words from Tony Cutugno
“Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful.”
— William Morris
The people, places and houses I treasure most are truly timeless : their beauty and value refuse to be affected by the passage of time or fashion. Imagine how the word took on new and poignant meaning when I learned that Suzanne Rheinstein, the doyenne of classical American interior design, had passed away a week after the publication of her third book A Welcoming Elegance . No doubt, with Suzanne’s impeccable timing, she knew it would be her swan song. And having admired her work and taste for so long—her relevant, modern-day mix of antiques, furnishings, fabrics and art are the very definition of timeless—it was inevitable her book would inspire the new edition of Luxury Space. Like Suzane, I’ve always believed that the most exquisite homes—whether or not furnished with priceless fabrics and museum-worthy paintings and furniture—must, above all, be a place where one can live in a relaxed, spontaneous way. Just as she painted a formal Georgian library a bold and breezy lacquered green, the listings included in this issue all hold an element of surprise: a posh pagoda ornamented with gleaming white millwork becomes the ultimate alfresco dining space in a Ridgefield Victorian; a French-architect designed stable with embellished stalls becomes the jewel of a storied 1860 equestrian property in Millbrook; a 21st century custom shoe closet—accommodating 100 pairs—is the perfect fit for an 18th century farmhouse in Carmel. Welcome to elegance: it’s even more thrilling when it’s delightfully untraditional or unexpected!
On the cover: 1 Parley Lane, Ridgefield, CT listed by Heather Neumann Salaga

"Suzanne Rheinstein: A Welcoming Elegance"
by Suzanne Rheinstein
Over the past decade, celebrated style maker Suzanne Rheinstein has achieved an unprecedented level of refinement and clarity. Her love of objects from the past remains a touchstone, but in her newest rooms, stylish modernity and an elegant simplicity hold sway.
Presented are beautifully photographed homes of clients Suzanne Rheinstein has worked with before that reflect a vision of richness tempered by restraint. Her longtime fans will find new inspiration in these pages. Throughout, she shares her ideas of how to live in a relaxed way surrounded by artworks and personal collections. A traditional Georgian library is done in a totally untraditional lacquered green, while a San Francisco town house revamp includes a “California” room filled with Moroccan rugs and rattan chairs, and a serene retreat has a guesthouse evocative of the bohemian 1970s.
