A few words from Tony Cutugno “Cocktails should deliver flavor but also fun, and a little bit of a mad-scientist element.” — The Lee Bros Everyone loves summer. Warmer weather. Longer days. A slower pace. And people seem to be in such a good mood in the summertime. Me included! I love the flavorful summer fruits and vegetables and the lighter cuisine, and I always enjoy the refreshing cocktails that seem to come into “season” when summer comes around. I recently revisited one of my favorite summer cookbooks, “Screen Doors and Sweet Tea,” by the gifted southern chef and storyteller Martha Hall Foose. Weaving touching tales of growing up in Mississippi with her favorite food and drink recipes, the author brings alive the people and traditions of her youth. Her evocative descriptions of banging screen doors, front porch chats with neighbors, and the beauty of a cool, tall drink on a hot, lazy day immediately conjured fond memories of the tastes and sounds of my own childhood summers. Take the time to read this wonderful book, and you’ll be rewarded with a new appreciation of Southern cuisine and a yearning for the food and people of your favorite summers. The following Private Brokerage properties offer a splendid array of idyllic spots to enjoy the summer while sipping some of the signature seasonal cocktails that go with it! "Screen Doors and Sweet Tea: Recipes and Tales from a Southern Cook" by Martha Hall Foose Gifted chef and storyteller Martha Hall Foose invites you into her kitchen to share recipes that bring alive the landscape, people, and traditions that make Southern cuisine an American favorite. Born and raised in Mississippi, Foose cooks Southern food with a contemporary flair: Sweet Potato Soup is enhanced with coconut milk and curry powder; Blackberry Limeade gets a lift from a secret ingredient–cardamom; and her muchballyhooed Sweet Tea Pie combines two great Southern staples–sweet tea and pie, of course–to make one phenomenal signature dessert. The more than 150 original recipes are not only full of flavor, but also rich with local color and characters. As the executive chef of the Viking Cooking School, teaching thousands of home cooks each year, Foose crafts recipes that are the perfect combination of delicious, creative, and accessible. Filled with humorous and touching tales as well as useful information on ingredients, techniques, storage, shortcuts, variations, and substitutions, Screen Doors and Sweet Tea is a must-have for the American home cook–and a must-read for anyone who craves a return to what cooking is all about: comfort, company, and good eating.
