The Luxury Space
JANUARY 2023 ISSUE
A few words from Tony Cutugno
“The house is one’s soul.” — Lee Radziwill
I couldn’t resist the title of Stewart Manger’s first monograph, Romancing the Home: Stylish Interiors for Modern Living . So filled with inspiring ideas and images of his exceptional designs, Manger’s book became the catalyst for this month’s Luxury Space. If ‘romancing” conjures up affection, passion and even obsession---naturally it can be applied to one’s home. Before embarking upon a new space for a client, the most renowned architects, decorators and landscape designers make sure the chemistry is right: the aesthetic elements have to work--for those who live in it. They have to love it. The thrill of ingenious matchmaking between buyer and seller is what drives the best real estate brokers, too!
As you’ll see in the standout properties on these pages, one couple in a bucolic Pound Ridge retreat fancied a separate Art Barn be built to contain their contemporary collection; a light-loving visionary commissioned a custombuilt contemporary with over 50 windows, including a skylit sleeping loft. And another couple, who were originally drawn to the hip, contemporary vibe of Katonah, came to realize only an authentic, yellow Victorian manor house would do.
I also like how Manger is unapologetic about describing his bespoke interiors as “stylish”; it reminds me of Yves Saint Laurent’s dictum: “Fashions fade; style is eternal”. I’m confident you can imagine yourself in one or two of the timeless properties in this issue, where you might put your own unique spin inside and out, creating your own private design for luxury living.

A Touch of Classic
Who would have thought that a 1908 colonial shingle, a country-luxe habitat steps from Revolutionary-era Bedford Village, would have anticipated the needs of contemporary families? Its five sunlit bedrooms, a bright green barn-style guest house, wrap-around mahogany porch and pool, make it the ultimate indoor/outdoor, study/work-from-home experience.

No surprise that recent owners of this picture-perfect Pound Ridge sanctuary were art collectors: besides commissioning an “Art Barn” to house their monumental works, they re-imagined the interior of their 1930s main house with high ceilings and vast windows to be more sculpture and painting-friendly. They then transformed their lush 13-acre landscape into a garden of large-scale sculptural delights.
