“Surprise is the greatest gift life can grant us.” - Boris Pasternak Dubbed “the heart of the home”, the dining room plays this role to the hilt during the holidays. On Thanksgiving, particularly, it’s where we gather to reminisce, share news, and, of course, share best-loved meals. But here’s a paradox I’ve discovered which I find delightful. While the ritual of home-for-the-holidays is rooted in familiar tradition, it’s the dining room where we see, in the most exquisitely appointed homes, the greatest “flashes” of novelty, exoticism and surprise. We love the imaginative touch of an antique Chinese pagoda centerpiece in the dining room of a Millbrook Greek Revival, (pictured on our cover) and how a contemporary brass candle pendant offsets the classicism of hand-painted Gracie wallpaper in a 1920s Colonial. What about the wow factor of a striking abstract painting starkly juxtaposed with velvet and chrome Art Deco chrome chairs in a custom stone & slate manor in Rye? What a stroke of serendipity that I recently picked up interior designer and photographer Stephanie Stokes’s new book The World at Your Table: Inspiring Tabletop Designs. “What Stephanie grasped long ago is that tables set with foreign elements can also transport us across space and time and bring exotic worlds home,” writes Melissa Biggs Bradley in the Forward. Indeed, we could all use a little escapism right now. Consider setting a Venetian-themed table, as Stephanie Stokes does, and serve a nice white Soave in Murano glasses to accompany your Scampi alla veneziana. Or illuminate a table with Colombian metal votive candleholders on a night you’ve cooked traditional arepas, aka corn cakes. I, of course, was beyond thrilled to see Stokes’s Provence-inspired table setting using the same magnificent marbleized faience (Aptware) from Apt, France that I’ve been collecting for years and recently shipped to my Westchester home. Every time I serve a breakfast brioche on these plates— alongside an invigorating latte—I am transported back to the countless summers I spent in the South of France. The table becomes my experience in miniature. Wishing you all such souvenirs heureux!
