“If you have a garden and a library you have everything.” - Cicero I’ve been a gardener my whole life and over the years have learned that while gardening is hard work, it offers immense joy as well. Like reading a great book, gardening not only educates and challenges us, but it can enrich the mind and spirit. Recently I came across Catie Marron’s new book, “Becoming a Gardener: What Reading and Digging Taught Me About Living” which is surprisingly rich in both gardening and life lessons. I was fortunate to have met her when she was first searching for a country house and have always admired her philosophy. In this wonderful book, Ms. Marron reveals how gardening helped her put down roots, literally and figuratively, and helped her heal after the loss of her husband. As she contemplates the meaning of gardening in our lives, she discovers what it means to root herself to the land and turn her house into a home. This special tribute to the enduring power of literature and nature helps us better understand the value of connecting to the places we live. As she writes, “Both books and gardens give our imaginations a chance to roam and create our own private worlds.
