Everyone loves summer. Warmer weather. Longer days. A slower pace. And people seem to be in such a good mood in the summertime. Me included! I love the flavorful summer fruits and vegetables and the lighter cuisine, and I always enjoy the refreshing cocktails that seem to come into “season” when summer comes around. I recently revisited one of my favorite summer cookbooks, “Screen Doors and Sweet Tea,” by the gifted southern chef and storyteller Martha Hall Foose. Weaving touching tales of growing up in Mississippi with her favorite food and drink recipes, the author brings alive the people and traditions of her youth. Her evocative descriptions of banging screen doors, front porch chats with neighbors, and the beauty of a cool, tall drink on a hot, lazy day immediately conjured fond memories of the tastes and sounds of my own childhood summers. Take the time to read this wonderful book, and you’ll be rewarded with a new appreciation of Southern cuisine and a yearning for the food and people of your favorite summers.
