Elephants travel in groups and exhibit clumped distribution based on their social structure. The clumps can contain one or several families called a "clan". Occasionally you may see elephants away from the clumped groups as they scvanges for food. Elephants are matriarchal, meaning they live in female-led groups ( typically older females). In the savanna, these female lead family units consist of about 10 individuals. Sometimes families join together and form a clan of up to 70 members. 1
