Dear Esteemed Reader, We are proud to publish our eleventh edition of The Hong Kong Resource Guide with you at GlamFest 2021.

The Hong Kong Resource Guide is published and released by the organizers of The Spring Fling, Summer Sparkles and GlamFest; the annual Kowloon Bazaars which has been successfully running for fifteen consecutive years.

How shopping fairs come about from an aspiration to provide a platform to vendors to showcase, market and sell their products and services to a mass of quality shoppers. It is also an initiative to bring people together during the beginning of the festive seasons - with Diwali, Mid-Autumn Festival, Halloween and Christmas around the corner. For shoppers, it is a unique experience of having all their shopping done under one roof with an array of vendors selling a variety of products and services. This guide serves as icing on the cake. This past year has not been easy - businesses affected, the travel scene completely changing, not being able to be with loved ones and an umpteen number of changes to basic lifestyle. This is a whole new phase which will go down in history! However, the pandemic has provided many with the chance for ref l e c t i on .

In the hustle and bustle of life, we go by this concrete jungle with so much to do. Hong Kong has infrastructure which allows us to accomplish so much in a day! This place screams efficiency at its peak, but wears us out simultaneously.

From a coffee meet to work, a client lunch, a school appointment, an evening workout, dinner with friends and finally - a little bit of Netflix before we hit the sack, society has gotten so used to the flow of their lifestyle… and the pandemic has broken that flow.

As a result, here are some of our Reflections with this “pause’...

- A lot is not in our control: This is a lesson for control freaks like me who never believed in ‘going with the flow’. I am now officially alive and flowing and it feels kind of liberating. Not being invested in heaps of planning and accepting whatever comes keeps my stress levels in check as long as I try my best.

- We have everything we need: We always tend to feel like we can’t live without many of our possessions when really we need very little to survive. I write this whilst in quarantine, and am living off a tiny bit compared to of what I have accumulated at home and it’s a true eye opener!

- We MUST be grateful: A lot of us have started counting our blessings, things that truly matter: optimum health, family, friends, work - we have so much to be thankful for!

- Health is the biggest wealth: Having had time and space out has given us the ability to think individualistically, resulting in a lot of us having healthier regimes, enjoying it thoroughly in the process. Keeping healthy is crucial to fight this pandemic together!

- Pick up a new hobby: I am thrilled to see many pick up new activities which they never had time for before: Hiking, mahjong, dancing, kayaking are just a few I have seen amongst family and friends and I see so much more joy in their faces!

- Community Spirit: Watching people come together to help the needy and help each other has been heartwarming.

Despite the devastation and negativity revolving around this pandemic, it has provided us with the opportunity for change. Humans propose and God disposes so what we can do during this time is keep positive, make the most out of it, reflect and soon this will all be over!

From Phrases To Sentences

Two Simple Ways To Get Your Child Talking Children move from using only single words and then begin to put two words together. They may say, “Doggy run”, “Mummy bread” or “me eat”. From here we want their sentences to grow. Expansion and extension are two ways for you to help your child develop their expressive language.

Language expansion ‘expands’ the utterances of your child by you ‘repeating’ back what your child has said but using proper grammar. You expand the phrases, acknowledge your child, maintain the meaning and keep the words that your child has already used.

Child: Doggy run. (when they see a dog running in the park or in a book or cartoon) Adult: Yes! The dog is running.

Child: Big dog.

Adult: Yes. The dog is big!

Apart from making the phrases into complete sentences, adding new information to the existing phrases helps elaborate and enrich what your child has said.

Language extension ‘extends’ the utterances of your child by using proper grammar and also introduces new vocabulary.

Child: Baby cry.

Adult: Yes. The baby’s crying. He is thirsty.

Child: Baby juice.

Adult: Yes. The baby is drinking juice. It’s orange juice.

Try incorporating these strategies throughout the day, e.g. bath time, snack time, in the playground. Keep it natural and use engaging intonation to stress the key words that you want your child to ‘learn’. Don’t make your child repeat you – it is enough for them to hear what you say. Have fun together and make the interactions enjoyable and meaningful!

The Child Development Centre is a not-for-profit organisation officially constituted in 1978. The Humble Kati Roll In 1932, a small eatery called Nizam’s, located in Calcutta, India, created a dish that they simply named ‘The Roll’; chargrilled juicy meats and vegetables wrapped in a flaky paratha flatbread, drizzled with tangy chutney and topped with crunchy fresh salad. Although the true origins of this ubiquitous street food is undoubtedly Calcutta, the bustling streets of India from North to South, East and West are dotted with countless holein-the-wall eateries, each offering their own trademark Kati Rolls and an unflinching claim to the ownership of the ‘original’ recipe citing distant aunts and uncles as the true founders.

A big part of communications is when we have differing or opposing views... these are communicated via arguments and /or discussions. Most importantly how do we handle them and then move onto resolving them in an aimicable manner.

What’s the difference between arguments and discussions?

The difference in these words lies in the usage and the connotation, or shade of meaning, behind each word.

Surely, all our life, many difficulties, irritations, frustrations, criticisms and complaints have come up and have been solved; but many disagreeable problems are often still unresolved.

Notice which style has been used by the situations around you? And which is the most valuable style to use… Is it by arguments or discussions?

Discussions must make each one express their opinion. Never attack any person by name; just attack the problem towards the best solutions. If many are shy to reply in the open its best to express themselves on paper, without signing their name. Some people say they are honest to share their thoughts and feelings - That’s fine, as long as their volume does not go high, and no one’s tone gets rude.

Arguments are often angry disputes or disagreements. Choose your arguments wisely. Some arguments arouse resentment that last for many hours or days as they feel disrespected. Allow others to win too... make sure you see both points of view.

Aristocratic people speak with a high degree of calm - So be calm; Respect people’s opinions.

They have a right to express themselves too.

So, stick to discussion mode. Remind each other, ‘we can we discuss this calmly, or on another day, when we are both calmer’. Act calm, be calm; Destress each other by valuable discussions in a calm way to get the best options for long lasting relationships and mutual successes.

And lastly, when discussions and arguments go the wrong way - change the topic to… now what’s next - let’s do something else - how about tea or coffee?!

But ……… occasionally we do forget, and our zoom call is doomed to failure. The good news is that we can use Zoom. Meet or the like to our advantage.

This leads me to a Top 10 Tips on Virtual meetings: 1. Get dressed - Yes, we can only see your top half, but the time you stand up to get your cup of tea is the time your colleagues get a real eyeful - soon to be viral.

2. Mute your audio and turn of camera by default.

3. Beware backgrounds - although you may have a wonderful wardrobe, I don’t want to peer into it. Choose a suitable, unique, or plain background – please no more Golden Gate bridge.

4. Set a profile pic.

5. Set a full profile name.

6. Record with permission – just in case you need a record.

7. Look at the camera. One of the hardest things to do since you may be tempted to look at the gallery. But you look awfully shifty with no direct eye contact.

8. Have your cheat “post it” notes around screens- answers to questions, agenda etc.

9. Learn the keyboard shortcuts, the list is long, like space bar for un/mute.

10. Place all in the same virtual background with immersive view.

Virtual meetings will be with us long after Covid 19 has left. We may as well get used to them, practice and become proficient.

Coping with Grief and Loss The COVID-19 epidemic has left many causalities to grief! The world is grieving the loss of loved ones, the inability to be with family and friends, and perhaps the loss of security.

We all experience grief and loss at some point in life because to live is to suffer on the one hand and, on the other hand, experience immense joy. A loss will likely be one of the most stressful and overwhelming challenges we face in life.

Each of us grieve and experience loss differently. It can be gradual or sudden and intense, even driving us to the edge with a constellation of emotions of fear, anger, remorse, and sorrow.

“It’s Okay not to be Okay!”

The message is simple, yet powerful. We are fundamentally encouraging you to say okay to your feelings without judgement, allow yourselves to be vulnerable, and get that it’s normal. It’s okay to move away from the illusion that it’s possible to be happy all the time, or the need to be perfect.

There is so much value in allowing ourselves to just ‘feel’, and complete the experience of emotions rather than judging them. By the time you have felt something, it’s also too late to say to yourselves (or anyone else) “don’t feel sad”.

All species naturally feel angry, sad, and scared (babies and animals feel it too). It’s not ‘wrong’ or ‘bad’ to experience these emotions. It’s only our judgment that has deemed it bad or wrong.

If we can take emotions as a natural part of life and allow ourselves to fully feel, then each emotion will have a start and an end point, and we can move on.

We have primary emotions that are actually here to help us survive. We don’t judge happiness or excitement, but we have judged fear, anger and sadness.

- Fear helps to protect us from dangerous situations.

- Anger helps us place boundaries for self-preservation.

- Sadness helps us release and cleanse our system.

So, instead of placing more rules on how we ‘should’ be, let’s say ‘okay’ to the way we feel and acknowledge these emotions when we experience them. Washing Machines: Check for the energy & water saving label and go for Grade 1. For larger families go for the largest capacity you can afford. Ancient Indian science of Ayurvedic nutrition has stood the test of time and has shown great results in disease prevention and management. It is a personalized rather than the general approach of modern nutrition.

Broadly speaking, there are three main body types as described in Ayurveda...

Vata Body: If you are slender, with a delicate bone structure and dry hair and skin and irregular eating habits, and gain and lose weight easily, you are a Vata body type.

Avoid: Foods that are too bitter in taste or raw food like cold salads, large quantities of fatty foods, honey and dry food.

Go for: Regular warm cooked meals, natural sweets like dates, and nourishing meals. Oats rice and wheat will balance the Vata Dosha.

Pitta Body People of this type are generally of medium built, with a reddish tinge to skin. They have a penetrating voice and are ambitious people but can be short tempered.

Avoid: Aubergines, garlic, radishes, almond oil, buckwheat and corn. Sour foods should also be avoided.

Go for: Cooling drinks and food, green leafy vegetables, pears , plums, cherries and barley in grains.

Kapha Body These people are often overweight, have a smooth skin, and strong joints and muscles. They are calm content people.

Avoid: sweet and oily food, starchy vegetables like potatoes, butter oil and sugar of all types.

Go For: Dry, light and warming foods. Salads and green leafy vegetables, grains like quinoa buckwheat and couscous.

Mental Well-Being, Suicide Prevention September is Suicide Prevention month. Per the HKJC Centre for Suicide Research and Prevention (HKU), 1019 individuals died by suicide in 2020, this number is an all-time high since 2003.

1. Over 53% of the suicide cases were from the 20 - 59 age group, the most common factors include lack of job security, uncertainty of the future, and the challenging pandemic lifestyle.

2. The COVID -19 pandemic has exacerbated suicidal tendencies.

3. It is reflected that men are more prone to dying from suicide than women.

What can you do to help someone who is suicidal?

1. If your friend or loved one has made a suicidal plan and has taken steps for suicide: Don’t leave the person alone. Try to keep the person as calm as possible and try to get immediate help.

Call 999 or take the person to the emergency room immediately.

2. If the situation is not that immediate, but you suspect someone is suicidal: Talk to them about it. Mentioning suicide or discussing it, is not going to push anyone over the edge and make them take action.

3. People who receive support from caring friends and family and who have access to mental health services are less likely to act on their suicidal impulses then are those who are isolated from support.

The Magic of Jal Neti Pots Tired? Sleepy? Suffering from insomnia, asthma, sinusitis, skin allergies or just simply want to slow down your aging process? Unbelievably, all that is needed are: a Neti Pot and a pinch of sea salt (equivalent salinity comparable to tears) inside a cup of lukewarm distilled or drinking water. Pour the water inside the pot and voila, you are ready for your refreshing Kriya Yoga. One just has to insert the nozzle to either side of the nostril and wait until the water flows out from the other side of the nasal passage.

This is to be followed by Kapal Bhati (forceful exhale) breathwork and a very simple lymphatic massage.

Jal Neti is a technique that was used by yogis to stay disease-free, and most importantly to use the breath well for their yogic practices without any blockages. Just how brushing the teeth is dental hygiene, the practice of Jal Neti is nasal hygiene. This technique uses water to purify and clean the nasal path, right from the nostrils to the throat.

According to the Journal of Ayurveda and Integrative Medicine (Vol. 11), Neti helps in: 1. Preventing and managing upper respiratory tract diseases.

2. Less chance of needing to use antibodies.

3. Alleviating sinusitis and rhinosinusitis.

4. Less allergic conditions.

5. Cleaning the eye ducts and thus, may help improve vision.

6. Improving skin disorders.

7. Improving the presence of mind and intelligence.

Additionally, research conducted in 2020 by the SMS Medical College in India claims that regular practice of Jal Neti may even help one to fight Covid-19.

Accessibility Awareness for HK’s Aging Population The prevalence of disability, special needs and chronic illness is on the rise in Hong Kong, yet our city lacks facilities, services and qualified professionals to meet this growing demand. It’s predicted that over the next twenty years, 40% of our population will be senior citizens.

People with disabilities and special needs (PWD/SEN) face a number of persistent challenges, including: • Higher incidence of trauma and negative life events; • Higher risk of poor mental health; • Increased feelings of isolation and loneliness from stigma and social exclusion; • Unmitigated stress and feelings of helplessness due to lack of wellbeing support services As members of Hong Kong community, what can the average citizen do to alleviate these issues?

Accessibility awareness and sensitivity are key to break down attitudinal barriers. Here are some tips: Treat others as you wish to be treated — There is no need to fear PWD/SEN or regard them as being inferior. Each person is an intelligent being with something to contribute to our society, and just happen to be impaired in one of life’s major functions. Honour and recognise this.

Use people first language — Say, “JJ has autism” or “CC uses a wheelchair.” Take away the labels.

Disability may be a part of the person, but it’s not who the person is on the inside. There is a whole personality and soul there.

Consider environmental needs for PWD/SEN when planning events — Most PWD/SEN are told to use a back entrance that is usually dingy and dirty. If you are hosting an event, pay attention to the environment and building accessibility.

PWD/SEN do not want to be patronised or tokenised — Disability is simply something they have learned to live with, and one piece of the wider puzzle that is their life. If you want to offer assistance to a person with a disability, ask if they need it, but try not to get offended if they do not want help.

Bottom line, there is nothing to fear about PWD/SEN. They operate differently to you and I, but they are incredible human beings who have so much to offer our world and our society.

Every one of us can be certain that we will experience some form of disability in our lifetimes — whether through illness, injury or age. Think about it.

A social enterprise (SE) is a business driven by specific social objectives serving as its primary purpose. Some social objectives could be: • Providing services to support the community (for instance, helping the elderly) or producing products needed by the community • Creating employment and training opportunities for the socially and economically disadvantaged • Protecting the environment with conscious production These businesses seek to maximize profits while maximizing benefits to society and the environment. Their profits are principally used to fund social programs.

Social Enterprises in Hong Kong The roots of SE in Hong Kong can be found in the 1980s. Over time they have evolved from working to provide employment and solutions to meet social and environmental needs in the city. It is interesting to note that 49% of the local SEs have been operating for four years or less.

This significant rise from 2013 onwards coincides with the establishment of the Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship Development Fund (SIE Fund).

While social enterprises which serve some of the most vulnerable populations have played a critically important role in responding to the pandemic, it has also led to new challenges for enterprises that have had to pivot their business models to stay in operation.
