Building a website - 7 do’s and donts! A well-designed website is a valuable investment that will generate revenue for your business — but 38% of people say they won’t explore a site if they find it unattractive. If your website hasn’t been updated in a while, your web design could unintentionally be hurting your business by turning people away at the door. 1. Target your audience but don’t ignore the users! Always keep your target audience in mind. Your point-of-view, as a professional, might be very different from that of the user. Pretend you’re visiting your website with fresh eyes. Walk through the user’s journey as they explore different pages. 2. Easy-to-use clear navigation - When it comes to usability, navigation is its cornerstone. The website’s beauty is useless if users cannot find their way around it. Every website navigation should follow three principles: Simple, Clear and Consistent are the mantra words here. 3. Do optimize for search - Websites that don’t rank well on Google and other search engines have very little chance of breaking through the noise. As you update your website and add new pages, make sure you’re following the most recent SEO guidelines. Your page titles, meta descriptions, and content are all important players in driving better search signals. 4. Don’t make visitors wait for content to load - Attention spans continue to shrink per year with the current number putting the attention span of the average internet user to 10 seconds in getting them to focus on a particular task. When they do end up waiting for a content to load, they become frustrated and could end up leaving your site if it’s not fast enough for them. 5. Take care of text placement and let the white / negative space breathe - Just like the layout, you don’t want the design to be cluttered with text. Do make it easily scannable - If your pages are easy to scan, you have a better chance of luring readers to the bottom. In addition to highquality writing, use headings, bullets, quotes and blocks to emphasize the essentials. 6. Don’t forget to optimize for mobile - 57% of mobile users won’t recommend a website that’s not optimized for mobile. More people are browsing and shopping on mobile devices, and they expect websites to provide great mobile experiences. Invest in responsive or mobilefirst design so you don’t miss customers during crucial moments. 7. Direct the focus and flow - Users don’t scan web pages in a linear manner and they don’t take the time to carefully read and view everything that’s on a page. That’s why it’s up to you to capture their attention in the short time span allotted to you and direct it to what’s most important or attractive about your offering. In fact, the classic 1-2-3-steps method used for feature exposure or process description works great for extending the user’s attention across the page and making it flow right down to the call-to-action button. To build your website / online presence and for consultations - reach out to your expert partner Plus Group Int’l Ltd. You will enjoy the experience as much as the final product! sales@PrintPlus.com.hk | www.PrintPlus.com.hk | Tel: (852) 2333 4421 | Likes us on FB!

No more holding back Today, more and more women have started performing to their full potential and are beginning to make a positive difference in the world. Yet, there are those that climb up the ladder and then do a self- sabotage, because of self-limiting behaviors or certain blocks in their mind. If you are amongst those that are struggling to rise, and know you deserve to be in a better space, do not feel disheartened. You may have read about the power of affirmations and how these have changed many lives across the globe. You can also use the same power to go through a process of selftransformation. What are affirmations and how do they work? An affirmation is a positive statement that we choose to announce or declare. When an affirmation is stated and repeated over and over again, this is often a push to squeeze out our negative thoughts and our limiting beliefs that maybe buried deep down in our subconscious. Positive thoughts act like medicine released from the brains own pharmacy. However, this thought-medicine cannot do its work if negative ideas, limiting beliefs, or bad attitudes neutralize it’s healing power. Thus affirmations, combined with visualizing the end result we desire, have the power of overcoming all the negativity that may still be present in our mind. With each affirmation thought, we give ourselves inspiration and guidance, comfort and solace and feel purified and transformed. Here are a few affirmations I have specially designed for remarkable women like you, who are aspiring to contribute even more, and feel a deeper sense of fulfillment in their lives.

While at home and even at the office, I am in a space that always creates fulfillment and gives greater scope to my wonderful talents. My work keeps leading me to a place that satisfies my ambitions, and I am happily making a remarkable difference in the world. I enjoy instilling a spirit of joy amongst my family, my collaborators, customers and clients. I am fired by the desire to keep them happy and help them all succeed. I am strong and capable of breaking through the circumstances that have held me down in the past. Sickness - a blessing in disguise? Why honesty with children pays off.

Let your imagination run wild - conjure up “Back to the Future”, then picture yourself as a young child, terrified, because through the crack of the door, you see your mother slouched over the toilet, throwing up non-stop. What questions might be going through your mind as you go back to your room, gripped with anxiety, tears running down your face? Who will take care of me if my mum dies? The fact is, your greatest tool is honesty but most parents don’t see it this way. Paula Rauch, a renowned Medical Doctor, in her Harvard Medical School Publication says: “It is natural for you to want to protect your child from pain or uncertainty”… ”Almost all children, even the youngest know that something is happening and that they are being excluded.” …“Research on children whose parents have cancer supports this.” Practical tips: What to do… Sit down with your child and talk through the facts honestly. Face the illness as a team. Go to appointments together so children feel involved. What NOT to do… Assume your child does not know what is going on. Whisper, have closed, secretive conversations. Hide your illness. Why this is a blessing in disguise… It brings families closer and able to face adversity as a team. It builds trust and security rather than anxiety. How honesty pays off… Honesty nurtures positivity and harmony. It has been proven that positivity is healing. Children learn responsibility and compassion. Empowerment is power.

Author, Wendy Hall, from the UK, suffers from a life-threatening neurodegenerative illness. Her motto is ‘Chronic Illness is a Gift’ Her daughter spent a year in hospital and she couldn’t find anything to help her fears and a dream was born. When Wendy herself was diagnosed, she had a choice, lie in bed or hospital feeling sorry for herself or choosing to have a purpose. She chose the latter and ironically, her market turned out to be healthy children. You can learn more about her books series at www.mediwonderland.com

All you need to know about IPL Laser hair removal Over the years, there have been so many ways to remove undesired hair from the body, but none of them furnish permanent results… until medical science came up with IPL! Laser hair removal is a permanent system of eliminating hair from the entire body. In this procedure, a bright beam of laser light is shone upon the skin, which burns down the hair follicles completely. With new medical advancements, traditional laser machines are now equipped with Intense Pulsed Light (IPL laser). This device is easy-to-use and shows results right away with additional visits for best results. Main benefits: 1. Permanent results: Since the process focuses on the area to be treated, the converted heat energy can penetrate through the skin and reach the root of the hair to damage the papilla (the pore that produces hair). The papilla, once damaged, will not be able to regrow hair naturally. 2. Safe to use: Permanent laser hair removal in Hong Kong is performed with IPL for its ease of access. The procedure takes a short while to complete and utilizes easy-to-use and handy equipment. It is an extremely safe method. 3. Regrowth of hair: When the hair regrows, it is lighter and finer and less easily visitble. There is also no unsightly regrowth and no ingrown hair either. 4. Quick & Easy – Typically it only takes 10-15 minutes per leg and there are no messy procedures or products so it’s a very convenient way to get permanent results. You can return to home right after the entire laser hair removal is over. During recovery, take extra care of your skin - Make sure you apply sunscreen of a high SPF whenever you go out in the open as your skin will remain tender for a few days. Visit a top practitioner in Hong Kong who is certified and reliable and cares for your well being and do not be enticed by packages that have fine print which are not to your benefit. Anyone tried and tested with great reviews and recommendations should be your go to!

Spa Beaute Par Zai is multi award winning spa & the longest establishment in Hong Kong since 1975, in the heart of Central – aiming to offer avant-garde spa and beauty treatments to modern career women in corporate offices and to the traditional elite who come to shop in the best stores in Central.

Once Upon a Time… Do you read your children a story every day? It is a wonderful way to encourage a positive relationship between you and your child and create special memories. Here are 5 tips on how to introduce story time to your child and make it a regular activity.

1. Make it a routine

Children respond well to routine. When children know what is going to happen next, they are more likely to feel secure and look forward to it. For example, having a story as part of the bedtime routine can help your child to calm down and be ready to sleep.

2. Follow your child’s interest

To begin with, choose books related to your child’s favourite characters or things. Later, you may want to try introduce something new and thereby expand their interests.

3. Get into character

Bring the story to life and be dramatic! Try using different voices for different characters and use varying intonation, ways of expression and even loud and quiet voices!

4. Do not be afraid to repeat the same book

Children love repetition and can be more engaged when they know the story. They like to know what is coming next! If your child is very familiar with a story, you can let your child join in with ‘reading’ the book with you and follow their lead.

5. Find a book that is just right for your child’s level

Children can easily lose interest when the story is too simple or too difficult for them. For younger children, try to pick touchy-feely and interactive books with simple storylines and lots of pictures. Remember that you can adjust the language’s level to simplify or make it more challenging. Above all, have fun! Exposing your children to books from a young age will encourage literacy and a lifelong love of reading.

The Child Development Centre is a not-for-profit organisation officially constituted in 1978. We provide various support in English and Chinese, through assessments; speech and occupational therapies; sensory integration, social skills and school readiness programmes amongst others, to a wide spectrum of young children with additional developmental or educational needs.

3 reasons why you need to update your professional head shot Hong Kong is known as Asia’s World City and a meeting of East & West in terms of culture and business. You definitely need a thick skin and a competitive hunger to be successful here. Another thing you need is to update your professional head shot on the regular. Here’s what I’ve learnt through my many years as a professional photographer in Hong Kong. 1. Competition is fierce Since Hong Kong is one of the most densely populated places on earth, competition is fierce. No matter what field you’re in, there will always be countless other applicants or businesses ready to take your golden opportunity. If you can put yourself ahead of the pack with a really engaging and impressive headshot, why wouldn’t you? 2. First impressions count With so many international people and businesses in the city, Hong Kong is a city where first im-pressions really count. If you don’t have a professional head shot that really “speaks” to people and represents exactly what you and/or your business are about, you could see yourself getting brushed off in a professional sense. 3. Technology moves fast A grainy selfie, a cropped photo of you in a bar or even a professional head shot from a few years ago will stand out like a sore thumb. Tech moves fast everywhere, but this digital and image obsessed city has a law unto itself. Camera equipment, lighting and editing programs are constantly improving and updating as well, so don’t let yourself stand out for all the wrong reasons. Planning for early childhood education For a toddler, we recommend planning for the next 3-5 years. Focus on primary school and work backwards. Here are a few pointers to help you along the puzzling path of early childhood education: Don’t buy brand A school’s reputation counts for plenty, but just because the kindergarten is ‘famous’ or has Oxbridge/Ivy League alumni, or an amazing new campus, it doesn’t mean it’s right for your child. Consider curricula It’s all too easy to fall into the trap of analysing the minutiae of various curricula. university students! We advise parents to go beyond the specific learning program offered (the ‘what’) and consider the ‘why’, the ‘how’, and the ‘so what?’. Play the game Almost every school in HK will insist on meeting your child prior to admission. This is mostly to ascertain their language proficiency, gross/fine motor skills, and basic emotional/social competencies. Don’t coach your child for the interview; schools aren’t looking for trained monkeys and it can be to your detriment. Be open minded Often, our own school experience shapes what we want – or don’t want – for our own children. Yet, times have changed. Many parents don’t know what they don’t know so we suggest being open minded at this stage. Don’t eliminate options based on biases or hearsay. Also, the school down the street may not be the best one. Geography is only one factor to consider. School bus children in from all over HK and the commute time is more useful to consider than the geographical distance. Need help in selecting the best fit school for your child? Language or Body Language Whets More Important? You know a language and other languages but do you know Body Language? The words ‘body language ‘are actually quite self-explanatory - it’s your body’s actions and reactions unconsciously expressing yourself, your feelings and intentions without you saying a single word! The other side is when we often use language with words and sentences to express something and they are unconsciously accompanied by actions, reactions and feelings that somehow do not fully match what you are saying. An example of this is people saying: “Thank You so much, we had a very nice evening” with a poker to neutral face (lacks a proper smile); while others tend to give a larger smile to huge ones; The 2nd dimension to saying thanks is if there is body language or not, by your head movements. And some nod forward from up to down while speaking which is a more affirmative style of thanks while other cultures, often Asians nod from left to right which is a just a protocol of thanks. The 3rd dimension is the quality of your thanks - is it ordinary or extraordinary. The difference is the word ‘extra.’ This includes proof of what you actually enjoyed the most - the topics, persons, decor, food etc. Among other dimensions is the unconscious tilt of the head when speaking, listening, questioning, appreciating etc. and when taking pictures gives other meanings. Therefore, be aware that people’s combination of directions of your face and degrees of smiles, actions, head and hand movements with or without verbal language gives different meanings. For successful personal, social, career, business and professional relationships - be a more impressive and expressive orchestra of yourself. Be aware that the science of body language proves that between words and actions, actions speak louder than words! Can’t find what you want in HK? Anyone who has lived, worked or gone to school overseas, realizes the selection of products in HK is limited and the price on certain types of products, especially branded products, can be more expensive than back home. For example, footwear, it is difficult to find half sizes or larger sizes in HK. Do you prefer a plant-based diet and/or like to buy organic products? We can all see the markup applied to the retail prices pre-printed on books. How about toys and games? Especially if you want educational ones. Baby products and sporting/outdoor equipment are two categories that tend to be marked up significantly in HK. These frustrations can be solved by buying from US online merchants. America is seen as a shopping paradise. What are the advantages of shopping US online merchants? Shopping Marketplaces – Amazon, eBay, Egg, and Etsy are four of the biggest eCommerce websites in the US. If you can’t find what you want on one of these sites it is probably not available. Huge Sales / Promotions – the prices of a product in America tend to be lower, but when you factor in the holiday sales like President’s Day (Feb), Memorial Day (May), Independence Day (July), Labor Day (Sept), the prices are significantly lower. In addition, the now famous, Amazon Prime Day (Jul) and Black Friday/Cyber Monday (Nov) sales, you can no doubt find what you want for a much lower price. Trusted Brands – not only can you find established brands you can count on, you know the safety regulations/ standards in the US are very high. In addition, the likelihood of getting a knockoff is very low when you buy directly from US merchants. If you have tried to order from the US and ship to HK, you have found the shipping costs are very expensive. Thankfully, there are package forwarding services that help you consolidate and ship your online purchases to you in HK so you can get what you want at more affordable prices.

For your consolidation and shipping needs, let us help bring all your packages from the US to HK in a more affordable manner! info@EgapGO.com | www.EgapGO.com | +852 9120 0672

The Kitchen Pharmacy Everything that you need for healing is right in your very own kitchen! Here are two spices we focus on which are popular in Indian cuisine as well as have many Ayurvedic healing properties? Cumin Seeds Cumin is essential in Indian cuisine. Its distinctive flour arises from volatile oil known thyme. Cumin is unsurpassed as a herb for digestive and gas problems, because its mild pungency helps build the digestive fire and gets juices flowing. If you have painful swelling you can use cumin externally, made into a paste, because it has analgesic and anti - inflammatory properties. (Remove the paste after an hour) If you suffer from menstrual pain, you can get relief by roasting some seeds until the aromatic oils are released and the chewing a teaspoonful. Chase them down with one teaspoon of aloe vera juice. Coriander is sweet, astringent and cooling with sweet vipaka. It is tridoshic. It has good digestive properties, can reduce fever and is diuretic. Note: The suggestions that follow are for seeds, but the coriander plant (cilantro) has similar and less strong effects. 1. For burning sensation in the urethra or for excessive thirst, take 1 tea-spoon of coriander seeds and 1/2 teaspoon each of amalaki and natural sugar in 1 cup boiling water. Steep overnight and drink it first thing in the next morning. 2. For fever try 1/2 teaspoon each of coriander seeds / fresh and cinnamon power and 1/4 teaspoon ginger. Steep this in 1 cup of hot water for 10 min before drinking. 3. For Kidney stones and scanty burning urination steep 1 teaspoon of coriander seeds in 1 cup of heated rice wash water - that is, the water from washing raw rice. Drink 2 times a day. 4. A tea made from equal portions of cumin seeds, coriander seeds and fennel seeds are an excellent digestant. Use about 1 teaspoon of the mixture per cup and steep for 10 minutes.

Myth Busters with OnCourse Myth: If I have a perfect SAT/ACT score, I am guaranteed admission to colleges like Harvard and Stanford. Fact: While a perfect SAT/ACT score definitely boosts your chances, it is not the only criteria that universities consider. US colleges look for a holistic application comprising of: â—? Your academic score from Grades 9-12 â—? Your SAT/ACT score â—? Your extracurricular activities Myth: Colleges expect students to have participated in a large number of activities. Fact: The general belief is that every student needs to participate in multiple activities to show a well-rounded personality. This results in them spending time on activities they might have no interest in. Colleges are more keen to see students focus on and excel in a few activities and go more in-depth into them. Myth: All countries require the SAT/ACT for their undergraduate college applications. Fact: Only most US schools require SAT/ACT scores. There are certain schools in Canada and in Singapore that will accept your scores if you choose to send them but will not penalize students that do not send SAT/ACT scores. Myth: If I want to work in finance, marketing or consulting, I must study business at university. Fact: To work in business-related fields, it is not necessary to study them in college. In fact, many students who have studied something within the liberal arts or engineering work in business fields upon graduation since the quantitative, analytical and critical-thinking skills you develop through these other programs also prepare you for the corporate world. Myth: When choosing universities, I should choose the most well-known schools and the ones that have the highest rankings. Fact: While selecting the university that is best for your course is important, it is also equally important to select the best fit for you. Your college will be your home for the next 3 or 4 years, so you need to choose an environment in which you will be comfortable. Factors such as size, weather, location, and diversity, among others should also be considered. Rikhil Parsram - Head of Undergraduate Counselling, OnCourse Vantage Pvt. Ltd. OnCourse Vantage works with students starting from Year 10 through Year 13 and adopts a customized approach to help them discover their interests, build their profiles, and complete the entire university application process. Benefits of Healing Oils In a world of synthetic medicine and many artificial ways to mask pain rather than heal the body from the inside out or the outside in, many of us are looking for an alternative to the risky business of pharmaceuticals. Purely formulated, high quality, potency balanced essential oils are that alternative. They provide documented and scientifically tested results that are similar to many over-the-counter or prescription medications and offer none of the harmful or detrimental effects on the body. The body-type paradigm of Ayurveda is dovetailed nicely with the aromatherapeutic actions of balanced oils for all body types. For a good formulation – a blend has to have the ‘yin yang’ effect, eg. lavender naturally reduces inflammation, lessens pain and cleans the surface of the skin while clove on the other hand improves circulation. These are just some of the amazing ingredients combined to create the correct synergy for a joint therapy oil. Next time you are in pain and your body is aching for relief, reach for powerful healing benefits of plants. You might find that they offer the relief you need to live a fuller, more vital life that is free from tension, pressure, and most importantly, pain. Some tips and benefits: 1. Ensure you buy from ethical and organic producers and growers so the products are pure and potent. With high extraction levels they serve as fresh, vital medicine to improve, enhance, relieve, and re-invigorate. 2. Some essential oils contain antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, and even antiinflammatory properties, they are able to improve your immune system and also fight infections naturally, mostly in the form of combination therapy with modern treatments. Consult with an expert to see what will work best for your conditions. 3. Added benefits come in many ways – relief from aches and pains, improved skin care, support of ones digestive system, reduction of emotional stress and anxiety, better sleep, detoxing effects, boosting brain and energy levels and more. Best of all, there are no harmful side effects. Avail of these alternatives and be thy own healer! Shirley Budhrani brings you Inner Temple - Healing Oils - Hybrid Balanced Healing Oils which provide a natural alternative to pain management. Tax: There are more tax issues! The Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (“OECD”) document on the application of substantial activities factor to no or only nominal tax jurisdictions. The purpose of the document is to level the playing field and prevent shifting of profits from certain mobile activities to “zero or nominal tax” jurisdictions without corresponding local economy activities. Several “overseas” tax jurisdictions have enacted domestic economic substance legislation like Cayman Islands and British Virgin Islands etc. The above requirement will impact Hong Kong companies with Cayman listing vehicle and BVI intermediate holding companies, private business groups with BVI holding companies, intellectual property holding companies in the BVI and BVI trading companies which purchase from related parties and sell to related/unrelated parties. The remedies will be to clean up some of the intermediate holding companies to streamline the structure, building substance on BVI/Cayman Islands, making the existing BVI/Cayman Islands companies a tax resident of Hong Kong, winding up the existing BVI/Cayman companies and replacing them with new companies in Hong Kong and redomicile the existing BVI/Cayman Islands companies to other companies. Departmental Interpretation and Practice Note (“DIPN”) No. 58 issued by the Inland Revenue Department (“IRD”) DIPN 58 sets out its clarifications on the application of transfer pricing (“TP”) documentation rules stipulated in the Inland Revenue Ordinance (“IRO”). The TP documentation requirements set out in the IRO are consistent with the OCED’s three-tiered standardised approach which includes the Master File, Local File and Country-by-Country (“CbC”) Report. The Ultimate Parent Entity of a Multinational Enterprise Group with consolidated revenue that exceeded 750M Euro (equivalent to 6.4B HKD) a year is required to prepare a CbC Report. The key messages that the IRD wishes to deliver in the DIPN 58 is the importance of proper TP documentation to effectively demonstrate the arm’s length nature of a Hong Kong entity’s TP arrangements. The IRD holds the view that it would be difficult for a Hong Kong Entity to prove that the related party transaction amount stated in its tax return is arm’s length if it does not prepare any TP documentation. Tips on leasing your residential property Your property investments are likely your most valuable assets. Here’s how you can help secure a quality tenant. The cost of living in Today’s HK is indisputably higher than that of its Asian peers, and has over recent years, driven increasing numbers of MNCs to consider alternative relocation options for their expatriate staff. Landlords now have to be far more pro-active to secure such tenants. Do bear in mind that your apartment only gets one chance to make a good first impression; The most sought after tenants are typically spoilt for choice. Here are some achievable pointers at minimum cost: 1. Ensure your property is well presented and décor as neutral as possible – works best! - A fresh coat of neutral colored paint freshens the outlook! And some calming room fragrance throughout the apartment is also a good idea! - Well finished flooring is preferred to carpeting in this humid environment. Re-varnish as necessary. - Remove excessive built-ins. Ideally there should be no other built-ins apart from wardrobes and kitchen fittings. If you do not have wardrobes, consider providing a budget for the Tenant to purchase, and amortize cost over the fixed term of the lease. - Remove clutter and personal effects so the tenant can view your property as their home. - Provide simple but adequate lighting. Switch on the lights prior to a viewing, especially if your apartment suffers from insufficient natural light. - Ensure air-cons are professionally cleaned to enhance functionality. Ensure your apartment is regularly ‘aired’, keep your dehumidifiers running, and switch on at least some air conditioning prior to a viewing. - Ensure all kitchen appliances are provided in a decent state of repair, fridge properly cleaned, plugged in and freshener installed. - Ensure nothing is broken; Remember that just as landlords are looking for good tenants, tenants too are on the lookout for signs of good landlords. 2. Competitive pricing Do your research online, or enlist the help of a trusted agent to advise you on pricing. Unless your property is exceptionally well refurbished, asking for ‘higher than market’ rent with the intention of negotiating down does not always work. 3. Creative Negotiation Strategies Never walk away from an offer if it’s in the general ball park, and especially if it’s from a good tenant. Negotiation strategies could include extending the duration of lease terms, break clause commitments, rent free periods, early handovers, implementing two-way break options, furnishing allowances etc. Ask an experienced specialist. Leasing your property should be relatively stress-free if working with the right agency partners genuinely looking after your interests. Your agent should also be able to arrange for preparation and execution of contracts, Government stamping, transfer of utilities, documented handovers etc. Renu Budhrani founded RB Property Solutions Limited in 2017 after a 30-year career with Knight Frank Property Consultancy, as Director of Residential Agency. Yoga for People with Limited Mobility Limited mobility can be difficult to manage, especially if you want to keep your body in good shape. Few yoga instructors know how to manage different levels and abilities in one class. However, the benefits of yoga are available to even the most physically challenged of people. For people who are curious to try yoga but are nervous about beginning because of a lack of mobility, here are some tips to get started. 1) No expectations, no comparisons: Approach your practice in the present moment. Even if you can barely move today, you will experience progression with regular practice. Furthermore, what you may be able to do today, you might not be able to do tomorrow if you are having a bad body day. Your body is unique and different from the person next to you in a class. The shape and structure of our bones and joints are all different. Some of us have long arms, some are double-jointed, some have limited range of movement. Each body moves differently. It doesn’t matter what you cannot do, but if you approach your practice with a sense of curiosity, you will experience yoga’s benefits. 2) Own your sensations and make choices based on your feelings: Yoga is not about a certain shape or form. It is about an inner experience. Don’t worry about how you look. Instead pay attention to how to how you are feeling. For example, in any seated forward bend where the head comes towards the knee, one benefit of this is to stretch the back of your legs. If you feel the stretch and your head is no where close to your knees, don’t even worry about it. Breathe freely and enjoy the stretch. 3) Be kind and patient with your body: Most people trying yoga for the first time feel intimidated by the unusual postures. Go slow and steady and feel free to observe. Don’t underestimate the impact of small, steady movements. If you need yoga props such as a chair, yoga blocks or a strap, bring them into class and ask your teacher to offer you adaptations. Make sure your teacher encourages you to tune into body sensations and energy levels and adapt your practice to fit your unique needs. If you ever feel your sense of self-control slipping away in a class, allow yourself to stop, reset and try again differently. 4) Learn about teachings that go beyond the yoga mat and into everyday life: Yoga postures are like the tip of an iceberg. There is a wealth of practice and knowledge that does not require physical mobility. Mantras, breathing techniques, relaxation and meditation are some practices that any body can practice. Learning about the science of the mind and Yoga’s Eight Limbed Path is also a rich collection of teachings to enhance quality of life. 5) Find a teacher that is accessible: When a teacher is equipped to work with multiple abilities, the class can follow a predictable rhythm and all students know what to expect. Not only does this foster a feeling of security, but students are also free to explore different variations and adaptations to their practice without feeling judged. The Business Dilemma: When to Scale According to a survey done by Startup Genome, 74 percent of tech start-ups fail as a result of “premature scaling.” In other words, it is trying to expand the business before your product is ready. On the other spectrum, there are traditional SMBs (small & medium businesses) who are “under-scaled” or not able to expand even after 20 years of running their business. The dilemma remains, when is the right time to scale? Broadly, a business can be classified into 3 stages – Start-up, Growth, and Enterprise. 1. In the Start-up stage, the primary purpose of the business is to find an “idea.” It needs to experiment with different ideas until it finds an idea that works. This could be evidenced by customer penetration (like WhatsApp did in the early stages) or by the revenue generated. This stage is also referred to as the ‘survival stage.’ 2. Once the start-up has found an idea that works, it is out of the survival stage, it has entered the Growth Stage. Here the primary function of the business is to ‘replicate’ the idea that is working efficiently. 3. The last stage is called the Enterprise Stage, where the business has matured into an organization (like a Facebook). The primary purpose of the business here is to put management ‘systems’ & hire Professionals to sustain & expand. In my work as a Business Coach, I have found too many young Entrepreneurs trying to scale in stage 1 and run out of cash quickly. On the other spectrum, I have worked with traditional Business Owners (established in stage 2), who are never able to scale & miss the bus to become an enterprise. Recommendation: focus on developing Product, Customers or Revenue in stage 1 and start formulating business scaling plans only in stage 2.

Overcome Anxiety, Depression and Panic Attacks Stress, anxiety and depression can lead to physical pain. Conversely, physical pain can lead to anxiety, depression and negative thoughts. Underlying issues such as relationship conflicts, workplace issues, developmental issues in childhood, grief and loss, bullying and aggression, performance anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder can cause anxiety and depression. Our brain and the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems have not changed much since our evolution as primates. In the current context for example, when faced with discrimination at the workplace you would not respond by engaging in fighting or fleeing. However, your sympathetic system registers stress and threat to your wellbeing. Over time, layer by layer, our brain and body unconsciously register unpleasant experiences and become ‘primed for stress’. Some symptoms of anxiety include difficulty with sleep, restlessness, irritability, decreased levels of energy and muscle ache. Left unresolved certain individuals may go on to develop an anxiety disorder. Panic disorder involves having panic attacks which are characterised by a combination of at least 4 of any of the following 13 symptoms for over a month: pounding heart, fear of going crazy, trembling, chest discomfort, feelings of unreality, fear of going out of control/dying, dizziness, tingling in the extremities, chills or profuse sweat, abdominal distress and shortness of breath. The good news is anxiety, panic attacks and depression are very treatable. Many factors such as personality, heritability, environment, behavioural, cognitive, developmental and life events contribute to anxiety disorders. Psychological therapy is highly effective in helping resolve anxiety and panic attacks. Here are some simple tips: Tip #1: Problem-focused coping versus emotional-focused coping. Do you look for ways to alter the source of stress or do you use your emotions to respond to the source of stress? Tip #2: Reinterpret your situation in terms of positive possibilities.

YOUR MIND IS THE GATEWAY TO YOUR WELLNESS Wellness has become a global buzzword; most people around are finding out what to eat, where to buy their organic products, how to juice, how to incorporate a fitness regime into their lifestyle and so on. While it’s great to see people make more conscious decisions about their bodies, we would also like to remind you that your mind is the gateway to your wellness. If you are mentally stressed, anxious or depressed, the impact of your food and fitness on your health will be minimal. An easy way to think of this is that your thoughts are the primary food that you feed yourself, hence for your body to function optimally, it needs the utmost attention. If you have diabetes or cancer and were taught to eat raw food because it doesn’t spread the disease, but you eat it fearfully because you are afraid it may get worse, it really doesn’t help. The fear is the primary thing that you are feeding your body and sadly it is likely to spread the disease! Conversely studies have shown people ingesting poison as an act of strengthening their willpower (not that we recommend it), and still being able to be healthy, because their mindset is healthy. So, while you are doing all your research on wellness to improve the wellbeing of yourself and your family, remember to be conscious about of your mindset as it determines everything. Our Recommendation: Start with something simple; before you eat your next meal (and yes, please eat healthily), think about the state of your mind. Are your thoughts and emotions serving you, or does this need to be worked on? If it does need work, you can start with simple meditations, affirmations or gratitude to change your state, and that would make a bigger difference to your mindset. Connecting with the Root Chakra Our

root

chakra

is

located at the base of our torso. It helps us ground our energy in the earth. It’s about the material, and grounding our spiritual energy in the physical plane. A healthy root chakra feels

anchored

and

grounded in the earth, almost like roots are growing out of our feet into the ground where we find support. People with a healthy root chakra feel a deep connection with the Planet. They support others in practical matters and are very grounded in their financial energy. That does not necessarily mean they are great earners - they can be. They can be good organisers and managers of wealth - budgeting, costing, etc. People with imbalanced root chakras might find it difficult to feel grounded. From a spiritual perspective, the root chakra’s balancing energy is the crown chakra. “As above so below” is a statement we often hear, and this balance demonstrates that. Our connection with the Universe and our ability to ground that connection through the physical/material requires our crown and root chakras to be in balance with one another. Veganism: What, How and When Were you pleasantly surprised the first time you tried that now very famous ‘Impossible burger’, out of curiosity? Is the proliferation of plant-based restaurants just a passing fad or a food revolution here to stay? Well the debate is endless and there are strong proponents on both sides. I remember having a discussion into the wee hours once with someone at a friend’s house... and it only ended when finally sleep took over. Veganism is a way of living which seeks to exclude all sorts of exploitation and cruelty to animals for the sake of food, clothing or any other purpose. By extension, a Vegan or a plant-based diet is one that does not include anything of animal origin. So, no meat, eggs, dairy, fish, or any other seafood is allowed. While this might seem intimidating to many of us, it’s just about making a few lifestyle changes, which are not too difficult considering the great benefits. In recent times a few outstanding movies and documentaries like ‘Cowspiracy’, ‘Forks over Knives’, ‘Dairy is Scary’ have raised awareness about the reality of the meat and dairy industry, and the health and environmental benefits of Veganism. In fact, it would not be an exaggeration to state that going Vegan is the single most important step we can take to reverse climate change. Here are 5 easy steps to make the change: 1. Educate yourself: Arm yourself with all possible information and then dive into it. There is a host of information available on the internet… educate yourself. Attend plant-based cooking classes, purchase books, keep a well-stocked pantry. When you know all the various delicious recipes possible, it would be easier to make the switch. 2. Use meat and dairy substitutes to transition:In my personal opinion, meat substitutes in particular are highly processed products and best avoided. However, during the transition phase when you are walking a tight rope, don’t be scared to indulge occasionally to satisfy your cravings. It will make you miss meat and dairy less and you will be less likely to cheat. 3. Involve friends: Whether you have been lucky enough to find a friend to walk the path with you, or have a friend that will cheer you on from the sidelines, it is a huge help. Everyone goes weak in their resolve once in a while and a friend will certainly help in those times. Research says you are most likely to succeed if you have support. There are plenty of online groups and pages where there is good exchange of information and a lot of queries are answered. It will be a good idea to join one. 4. Celebrate small victories: Every health goal achieved, every improved reading on the lab reports will encourage you to go on and achieve even more. Enjoy every milestone crossed and soon you will enjoy the entire journey. 5. Relax: Finally, I feel it’s important to relax, take it in your stride and not make a huge fuss about it. Brush off arguments with a joke, don’t give too much attention to sceptics and others who might have a different point of view. Always remember that by avoiding that plate of meat, as good as it might look, you have not only helped yourself and the environment, but have also saved a life… Suveera Sharma runs Vegan/ Vegetarian cooking sessions and has been a vegetarian since birth. Help your Helper be Money Wise One day, Fé received a shocking letter in the post saying that her domestic helper, Mila (name changed) owed money, and that as the employer, Fé would be harassed if the amount was not settled. Very quickly, she realised that this was a loan shark. “I had no idea until I sat with my helpers to talk about this. Then they explained to me the whole situation; their inability to save, the pressure they had from their families back home in the Philippines - it was a real eyeopener for me,” she said. When looking online for help, Fé came across the charity Enrich and decided to sponsor Mila to attend Enrich’s financial and empowerment education workshops. Mila’s story is not uncommon; 83% of Hong Kong’s domestic helpers face debt, a cycle which is often triggered by high recruitment fees. Financial and empowerment education is a life-changing solution to address this issue. Today, as an Enrich graduate, Mila is debtfree, owns a house, runs two businesses and is saving for retirement! Her employer Fé also felt that the Enrich training had a positive impact by making it less taboo to talk about finances and encouraging open conversation. Domestic helpers like Mila are a fundamental support for many in Hong Kong. They take care of our loved ones, prepare meals and keep our homes clean. However, they are also extremely vulnerable to debt, family pressures, predatory lenders or investment scams. Why not give back to the person who cares for your loved ones every day? If you employ a domestic helper, help her be money wise! Sponsor her to attend the full 28-hour Enrich programme for just HK$2000, including 5 workshops and one-to-one support, such as mentoring or financial counselling. Contact us at info@enrichhk.org for more details. Enrich is an award-winning Hong Kong charity promoting economic empowerment for migrant domestic helpers. Our workshops equip domestic helpers with the tools to save, budget and plan for a future with greater financial security while they are here in Hong Kong. www.enrichhk.org | Tel: +852 2386 5811

Plant-Based, Paleo, Flexitarian, Keto, Vegan, Raw, Vegetarian? Restricting whole categories of foods or macronutrients can lead to obsessive behaviour surrounding food. Don’t create guilt and shame around eating carbs. Don’t tell yourself that you cannot enjoy certain things you used to love just because the diet you’ve chosen to follow forbids it. “Staying true to yourself in the digital age is a challenge, especially when everyone appears so “perfect””. We need to stop pigeonholing ourselves into one dieting style and instead, focus on eating nutrient-dense foods without feeling guilty if we indulge every once in a while. If you are like most women and men, you have tried every diet on the planet in your elusive quest for the perfect body so you can finally live happily ever after. But why isn’t it working? Look around you. Do the people look like you? Do they share the same ancestry, genetics, age, gender, health challenges and lifestyles? The answer is NO. Besides sharing the requisite number of body parts and organs, we are all quite different. So STOP comparing yourself to others. There no such thing as One-size-fits all diet. Your nutritional and exercise needs are specific to you and will change from one year to another, the food that is best for you and your unique biochemical make up might make another person gain weight and feel sick. We are too different in so many ways to eat the exact same food and follow the exact exercise regimen as everyone else and expect the same results. Fad diets will come and go but what your body knows and is trying to tell you will always be there. Treat your body with love and respect. Deprivation, calorie counting and starving yourself doesn’t work. It never has and never will. “It’s not selfish to prioritize your own health and happiness”. Do a digital detox, drink more water, find ways to fit more movement and pleasure into your life. Eat real, whole, unprocessed foods and prepare them in a nurturing and loving way. The greatest thing you can do for you and your loved ones is to take care of yourself so you can flourish, thrive and be fully present for yourself and for them. Keeping Retail Industry Up with Ever Changing Trends ...and the Increased Demand of Today’s Private Label Brands? The retail industry has been undergoing significant transformation driven by newly developed technologies, designed to help retailers adapt to the constantly evolving consumer trends. PLM is a common solution considered by the retail industry, designed to assist retailers in the development of private label products. However, created in 1985, these heavily upfront design systems have lagged behind the actual needs of today’s retail industry. Legacy Retail PLM Solutions Legacy PLM solutions are based on the traditional retail business models, coined, “the product lifecycle”, of which retailers communicate and collaborate internally about new product concepts. When the traditional Retail PLM solutions were created, retail “private label” was relatively new and legacy PLM solutions fit perfectly for the enablement of faster concept to design. However, fast forward to today’s world, what we are seeing is huge expansion for retail private label – 20% to over 50% market share throughout Europe and the United States. True Concept to Delivery Lifecycle Solutions Legacy PLM solutions stop at a certain point very early in the product lifecycle but, few actually go through to product delivery stage, covering sourcing, quotes, samples, quality assurance, supplier management and supply chain stops along the way. Buyer Beware True end-to-end (concept to delivery) product lifecycle management solutions can be hard to find due to the nature of the legacy software business. Legacy software companies who built their business on PLM solutions have added new features/functions and integrated other legacy software pieces over the years, which, consist of a mix of individual pieces, resulted from years of development, meaning they are fragmented, mask weaknesses and give the appearance of an end-to-end solution. Do End-to-End Solutions Really Exist? End-to-End, concept to delivery solutions do exist and are flexible, upgradable, large scale, userfriendly, SaaS platforms that can offer management of large amounts of data, spanning across multiple retail teams and ultimately bridging the gaps within the end-to-end product lifecycle process. Mark Hudson is the Vice President of Global Marketing & Communications for CBX Software, Mark Hudson holds an MBA in marketing, is a GS1 Standards Professional and holds a CIMdata certification in Retail PLM Leadership. Investing In Art Is An Art In Itself Hong Kong is now the 3rd largest art market in the world. If you are not an experienced or avid art collector, buying art can be quite confusing and daunting.

Most people buy art for the love of it and personal enjoyment. However, more and more people are buying art as an investment, after all, art is now classified as an asset class. Art investment is not a new concept. Andre Level established the first art fund in 1904 called La Peau de L’Ours and quadrupled his initial investments when he liquidated the fund in 1914. In 1967, Peter Wilson invested in the Times-Sotheby Index and transformed the art market six years later with Robert Scull in the Robert Scull Auction by proving the extraordinary rise in the value of art. Sales in the global art market in 2018 reached $67.4 billion, up 6% year on year. The 2018 Deloitte art & finance report states that there is strong art market growth overall with art sales up 11.2% between 2016 to 2018. The Art Basel and UBS 2019 report states that despite Brexit concerns, the UK had a relatively strong year of sales, with values rising 8% to just under US$14 billion. Buying the right art is key if you are hoping to resell it one day. Before you buy, you need to know the following about the artist: - Past sales history or auction records - Exhibition history - Gallery representation - Press coverage - Age/stage in the career - Production volume - Source and provenance It is also important to note the quality and condition of the work, the uniqueness of the piece and subject matter. Investing in the right artwork can reap rewards beyond any other finance investment means with examples like the Gustav Klimt that gave Oprah Winfrey a profit of US$62.1M resulting in 70.6% ROI and the Jean-Michel Basquiat that sold in 2017 for $110.5M profiting more than 5000%.

HELPFUL TIPS TO SUPPORT LOVED ONES WITH DEPRESSION According to Minal Mahtani, founder of OCD & Anxiety Support HK (OCDAHK), “Most people in Hong Kong speak about depression as if it’s the same thing as sadness – it’s not. Sadness is a normal human emotion, which passes after a healthy grieving period. Depression is a serious mental health disorder caused by a dysfunction in the brain’s messaging system affecting thoughts, mood and behavior. Sadness is only one of the symptoms of depression. Other symptoms include feelings of helplessness/hopelessness, lack of energy, loss of interest in pleasurable activities and even suicidal thoughts. If not treated, depression can cause enormous disruption to a person’s daily life, work and relationships.” In this light, offering glib advice such as ‘Snap out of it’, ‘Cheer up’ or ‘Many people in the world have less than you’ will only turn up the volume on the voice of self-stigma, already on a constant loop in the head of someone suffering from depression in the form of thoughts like ‘I am not good enough’, ‘Nothing will get better’ and ‘I am better of dead’. So what can you do to genuinely support someone who might be suffering from depression? Here are some tips: 1) Listen to them without judgment. Acknowledge their feelings, without giving your opinion (e.g. “I can see that this is making you feel really down”) Make no assumptions about how they got to that place and resist assigning blame. Depression is nobody’s fault. It can arise out of a traumatic experience, a chemical or hormonal imbalance and can even be passed on genetically. 2) Instill hope of recovery. Sufferers of depression often have a bleak vision of the future and themselves. Remind them of their worth and importance and how effective treatment is for depression. In fact, depression is the most treatable of all mental health disorders especially with early intervention. 3) Encourage them to seek professional help: Encourage sufferers to seek help from a psychologist or psychiatrist who can provide a diagnosis and information on appropriate treatments available including therapy and/or medication. Also, suggest they go to a support group to reduce feelings of alienation and learn new coping skills. “It takes great courage for someone suffering from depression to speak up about it and ask for help” says Mahtani. “By simply shifting your perspective on what depression really is, you can be a strong, supportive element in that person’s road to recovery.” Depression affects 4.4% of the world’s population and 2.9% of the population in HK. Editor of OCDAHK Shane Sakhrani OCD & Anxiety Support HK (OCDAHK) is a registered charity in Hong Kong that supports, educates, coaches and provides resources for individuals and their families affected by OCD, Anxiety and Depression. Buy the best art for home or office, without the price tag All spaces benefit from art. But not all people know where to start. It is possible to live and work amongst noteworthy, unique art that speaks to a space without being a specialist, know artist names or even visiting a gallery. Here are some easy tips on what to consider: 1. Buy for love Many people worry they don’t know what they like. But actually, they do and they definitely know what they don’t like. Learning tastes can be as simple as looking more to discover more, or perhaps moving away from concepts and into colours. Most people are drawn to particular colours, that is how furniture and homewares are purchased. So buying art in the same way can offer a starting point on the colours to go for, or against. 2. Buy what others can’t have It is much more exciting to have something that others have not seen before or had access to. It is also incredible to be involved in the creation of an art work that goes in to a space of significance. It can give a room a renewed confidence and pride which naturally impacts those within it. 3. Buy value without compromising style Value not only gives art work credibility and clout, it also ensures the purchase was ‘worth it’. If an art work is unique or limited edition, exclusive and by a talented artist, it will have value. The style part is up to personal preference and goes back to buying for love. 4. Buy quality - Quality of the final product is vital for two reasons: i. Art is a luxury and the materials and finishes used should reflect that out of appreciation for the content within. ii. It needs to stand the test of time and so cannot fade quickly or easily, be framed poorly or have parts which disintegrate or crumble. 5. Buy from trusted sources It is always important to know that any purchase is a genuine purchase. There are many fakes out there and regardless of how expensive or prolific an art work or artist is, for the sake of respect and integrity, artists should be honoured. Red T Group offers all the above and more. With a huge catalogue of art works readily available (Instagram @redtgroup) Red T are professionals at developing collections for home, office and larger projects with print prices starting from HK$990, unframed. Spaces are transformed when they house considered art.

A Day Shopping with Carla by Megan Murphy Upon my arrival in HK I was surprised by a truly fabulous gift: A SHOPPING EXPERIENCE WITH CARLA! As the mother of an expat I visited Hong Kong multiple times and over the years my son has taken me to visit at most of the city’s famous tourist spots as well iconic shopping locations. Upon the appointment confirmation, Carla called me and asked me about what kind of things I would like to see and carried on asking a few relevant questions. On the day of the experience I met Carla at HK Station and after a quick train ride we reached our first location: a massive showroom inside the only European luxury brand factory in in Hong Kong. There were rows upon rows of high-quality evening wear as well as casual clothing for daily wear with unbelievable prices. We had a dedicated staff member taking care of us and a surprise visit by the founder and creative designer. I felt absolutely pampered! After ticking a tweed jackets, a “little black dress’, flattering pants a few silk tops off my shopping list we left to the second location: a fashion jewellery showroom. The designer, who supplies jewellery to hotels such as the Mandarin Oriental and Four Seasons globally, was waiting for us at our arrival with champagne on ice! She personally showed me how to layer and coordinate jewellery in a very timeless yet current way. With a shopping bag full of bracelets and unique earrings for myself and a few beautifully packaged gifts to take home it was time to say goodbye and check out some shoes at the next location: A designer pop up! With champagne in hand I tried many pairs on and I left happily with 2 new pairs of fabulous shoes. At the last minute I decided to take a look at handbags to complete my new outfits, Carla promptly adjusted the itinerary and took me to an amazing heritage building which houses many upcoming local designers, Carla offered styling advice which helped make my choices with confidence. Our afternoon went by so quickly! Shopping with Carla is like shopping with a good friend. We had so much fun! I decided to book another session for my visit to HK on the spot! During your unique and luxurious shopping experience, you will be greeted by your shopper and whisked away to hidden showrooms and boutiques. Curated selections will be available, based on your preferences and sizes. Beverages (incl champagne), snacks and significant discounts will be included as part of this unique personal shopping experience. www.carlapersonalstyling.com

Dress to Impress Guide to Childre

• If your child is between two- and six-years-old, brush the teeth twice a day with a soft toothbrush and toothpaste with fluoride. The amount of toothpaste should be the size of a pea. Do not have your child rinse his or her mouth after spitting out the toothpaste. • If your child is six-years-old or older, encourage them to brush their teeth twice a day with a soft toothbrush and toothpaste with fluoride. The amount of toothpaste should be the size of a pea.

• Explain the good things about brushing teeth. You should also explain what can happen if your child does not brush their teeth. • Understand that your child might not be open to the idea of brushing their teeth on their own. But they will most likely listen if you encourage them to do so. • This way, you can model good brushing habits. Your child can also follow your steps. • Break down each step into one simple sentence. This makes each step easier to remember. • Watch your child brush their teeth two times a day for at least one month. This can help you make sure they are brushing properly and regularly. • Use a timer or sing a song for two minutes. This helps your child learn how long they should brush their teeth. If your child likes electric toothbrushes, find one with a timer. • Find a toothbrush and toothpaste that your child likes. Let them pick the colour of the toothbrush and flavour of the toothpaste. Start with regular toothbrushes. Then, you can try electric toothbrushes if you can. • If your child doesn’t like how the toothbrush feels in their mouth, start off slowly. Have them practice touching the toothbrush to their lips or front teeth. Over time, they will get used to the toothbrush. • When your child has learned how to brush, then you can talk about flossing. If they do not like regular floss, try a floss pick or a water flosser.
