POLLUTION-PROOF YOUR SKIN Everyday air pollution is an inescapable consequence of city living, especially here in Hong Kong. Well, you may have noticed that the air quality has been fluctuating between moderate to very unhealthy so Hongkongers, beware!

Short of staying indoors or donning a biohazard suit, here’s the inside scoop on pollutants and its effects on the skin.

Don’t worry, there are steps you can take

From cigarette smoke, car exhausts, smog, dirt, dust, and the rest – I want to wash my face just thinking about it - pollutants increase the levels of free radicals produced by the body. Free radicals are unstable molecules that attack human cells and damage DNA. They lead to ageing, tissue damage and possible disease. Enough of the bad news, thanks!

Despite the humidity this week (and the two litres of water we all drink each day, just like we’re supposed to), has anyone else noticed their skin drying out? Even those with classic combination skin are suffering from parched patches.

If you’ve got particularly sensitive skin, you might also be experiencing sore, itchy skin around the delicate eye area. Yes, that’s the pollution again. Yuck.

For the most sensitive among us, we would recommend shunning your makeup bag this week.

We can’t all move to the Himalayan Mountains, but we can take some simple steps to minimise the damage: 1. Antioxidants: Antioxidants are nutrients that can prevent or slow damage to the body. Eating a diet rich in antioxidants is an excellent line of defence against the damaging effects of pollution.

Antioxidants are found in brightly-coloured fruits and vegetables, such as tomatoes, carrots, squash, sweet potatoes, bell peppers, leafy greens, and more.

2. Water: Stay hydrated to flush toxins through your system and keep your skin (and entire body) healthy.

3. Skincare: Choose skincare products that contain protective natural ingredients, such as vitamins A, C and E. Hangover Science We’ve all experienced that awful feeling in the morning after a night out drinking.

Hangovers are characterized by a list of awful symptoms experienced after consuming excessive alcohol. These symptoms may include headache, dry mouth, dizziness, fatigue, nausea, stomach discomfort, drowsiness and cognitive fuzziness.

The most familiar explanation for hangovers is dehydration from drinking alcohol, because it acts as a diuretic, and because people who are drinking heavily for hours probably aren’t drinking much water in that same time period. Yet, studies examining the link between dehydration and hangovers have shown surprising data, whereby it is likely that dehydration accounts for only some of the symptoms of a hangover and there are definitely other factors at play.

Another origin of the hangover is a toxic compound called acetaldehyde, a by-product of alcohol breakdown in the liver which is up to 30 times more toxic than alcohol itself and has been found to produce hangover-like symptoms in studies. Fortunately, there is a cure to this toxic substance! Research into Dihydromyricetin (DHM) which can be pulled from natural herbs including Oriental Raisin & Moyeam Tea have shown to increase our body’s ability to process acetaldehyde. How can I be more assertive?

We don’t get the life we deserve; we get the life we negotiate!

Now, how can we become better negotiators to increase the quality of our life and get the outcomes we want? Assertiveness is a very important skill that negotiators master. It is the capacity to be present in a relationship.

It is the ability to care about ourselves and about the others. It is the attitude we develop when we grow out of two disempowering habits we learn as we move through life: 1) To please. Moved by a fear of rejection or of not being good enough, we tend to always say yes. We want to please others. We want to accommodate them, even at the cost of our own wellbeing. We are not the masters of ourselves, but others become our masters. As a result, we suppress ourselves since we are unable to express our feelings, our interests and our demands.

2) To be selfish. This is the other end of the spectrum. We are only worried about ourselves as if we were the only actors the matter on the stage of life. We might feel this expression as one of independence or freedom, but we do forget that in addition of being individualities we are also individuals-in-relation because we are part of a social (and I would add, cosmic) reality that is bigger than just ourselves and that contains us.

Assertiveness is a quality of our maturity. It is something we develop over time. It is a dimension of both our personal growth and our contribution to the world.

We are assertive when we have both self-awareness and empathy. How then can we develop this important skill?

1) Be clear about your outcome. Knowing the result you want to get will also help you to have an idea about the best course of action. Keeping an eye on your target will also help you to have more courage and to better control your emotions.

2) Learn how to say no. Saying no can cost us energy. But so does saying always yes. In the short time, always agreeing to someone’s request releases some anxiety and stress, but it also frustrates us when we agree without meaning it. We become hostage of our own agreement.

3) Take small steps. Get some practice in being assertive. Start small. Begin where it’s easier and build some muscles. As you will experience the benefit of your assertiveness and you become increasingly confident, expand your practice until you will be able to assert yourself in those circumstance that today seem so difficult.

Legs: Lateral Plyo Jumps Stand on one foot on one side of the trampoline, then quickly switch to the other foot by landing on the adjacent trampoline. Always push off with the foot that is in contact with the trampoline. Make sure your abs are engaged the entire time. Do this for 20 seconds and repeat 3 times with 10 seconds rest between each sets.

If we can relax in a very active way - our torso and limbs are not floppy but able to maintain form and shape without tension, we can unify our body parts together as one piece and move from our true Centre of Mass. Basic tips for maintain a better posture: 1) Be conscious of how you carry yourself We have to be able to feel our bodies. Tension hinders this ability and we become numb. When waiting in line for a bus, on the MTR scan through the body from the toes to the head feeling each body part. You will notice if you are standing in a way that encourages tension rather than dissolves it 2) Ask yourself to stand up straight Once you have noticed how you are standing, command your body to stand how you want it to.

We have to build a relationship with our bodies and due to the tension they often don’t want to listen to us. Consciously ask yourself to stand/sit up straight, but as relaxed as possible.

3) Bring yourself back to the feeling sensation of your body throughout the day.

This takes some effort but once you get in the habit it becomes effortless. By feeling your body you will see, from the inside out, how you are standing/sitting/walking,then you will have the choice to change bad postures.

Todays Action Cameras Are you are hardcore adventurer or sports extremist? Even if you aren’t an action camera is a cool gadget to have! There are numerous brands and types of action cameras on the market today and they can all be very overwhelming to navigate!

“What amazed me is simply how easy they are to use. I brought home two for my sons (9 and 11 years old) and within minutes of getting out of the box (after an initial charge) they were on their bikes, and diving in the pool. They even took it to the water park and were riding the slides with cameras strapped to their arms. Here are probably the most important factors when choosing an action camera: Video Quality - The majority of people will most likely be happy with 720p or 1080p quality.

Many high end cameras record up to 4k, but at this level battery life is diminished and most people forget they don’t own a 4k TV or monitor so viewing at this resolution is difficult.

Size, weight - Most action cameras are “box shaped” which make them easy to carry and easy to mount. Other shapes may suit specific requirements. A lighter camera means it is easier to carry.

How will you use your camera - The vast majority of action cameras are very easy to use.

Literally, turn them on and start recording! If you plan to use your action camera in rain, snow, or underwater, look for words like “waterproof” and “weatherproof” when looking at a certain model’s list of features. Some action cameras have a water-resistant exterior, while others need to be placed inside a waterproof case.

Connectivity - Most action cameras include a USB type cable to directly connect to your PC. However other come standard with Wifi to quickly and easily upload or transfer your video footage and images to the web, your computer, or smartphone, particularly if your camera doesn’t have a screen for preview and playback. Also, connectivity features allow you to use your camera with other add-on accessories that require Wi-Fi such as wireless remotes.

Memory - You’ll need the fastest memory card you can afford to get the best performance out of your action camera. A card that doesn’t have fast enough write speed will cause dropped frames, resulting in jerky footage. The larger the memory card the longer you can record or the more photos you can take.

Accessories - Check each brand’s website to see what accessories and mounting options are included and which ones are available as add-ons for each brand and model you are considering.

That way, you won’t end up buying a camera and finding out later that you cannot buy a certain accessory that is crucial for the sport or activity you’ll use it for.

A BEGINNER’S GUIDE TO WHISKY

Even better than a love of whisky is being able to have a discussion about it with your fellow connoisseurs. Whisky has a language of it’s own that you should learn how to speak. Colour, taste and nose are all things that an aficionado should know.

Colour - First thing to do when you get your whisky is take notice of the colour. The colour of your whisky can tell you a lot about it and give you that first impression of the flavours you can expect from your dram. It can give you an indication of how matured it is, but primarily colour is to do with the barrel. This is due to the fact that when a whisky is distilled, it is clear and known as ‘New Spirit’, it draws its colour from maturing in barrels. For example, if your whisky has a redder darker hue to it, it has likely been aged longer in a sherry cask, and therefore could have richer, fruitier tones to it. If it is more a pale gold, then more likely a bourbon cask, and therefore lighter, sweeter, more vanilla tones. The colour can also be affected by age, the longer a whisky sits in a barrel the further the flavour develops, as does the colour. However, don’t let this fool you, a whisky aged for 20 years solely in a bourbon cask could well be lighter than something aged for 10 in a sherry. Therefore, whisky colour has more to do with cask than age.

Nosing - Most of what we ‘taste’ is smell anyway, so this is an important aspect of tasting whisky. We begin to anticipate the flavour, scents get our taste buds going and invite us to take a sip. When nosing a whisky that is 40% ABV and above, clearly there will be a smell of alcohol, especially if you are not used to drinking whisky. You can help combat this in numerous ways.

Tasting - Finally we taste the whisky, and this is what it’s all about really! When you take your first sip I recommend trying without adding water first, to get the raw flavour and full force of the dram. Take a sip, swill it around your mouth slightly, let it coat your palate. Think about the flavours on your tongue. Sweet, smoky? And was it creamy and soft, did it coat your mouth.

What was the finish like? Long, the flavour stay with you, did it simply vanish or leave you with a dry taste in your palate. These are things to consider when tasting whisky, and everyone will have a slightly different experience, form your own opinions when tasting whisky, don’t simply believe what you are told!

I mentioned adding water, which is the way I personally like my whisky, and often how it is consumed in Scotland especially. For tasting whisky, we recommend adding 50-50 water and whisky. It helps to dilute that alcohol flavour and make the flavours of the whisky more discernible, opening it up. There are no ‘right’ ways to drink whisky! As part of a cocktail, on ice, with water, it’s up to you how you enjoy your dram.

We all know that hands-on arts & crafts activities are important for child development.

3 Steps to Leading Successful Multicultural Teams Companies have realized that multicultural teams bring in more perspectives and increased creativity and decision making ability. However, cultural misunderstandings and miscommunication can turn diversity into a negative influence instead, crippling engagement and results.

Lack of communication is the root of many unpleasant situations. As such, the first step is to understand different cultural communication styles, which can be broadly divided into two categories – Low v/s High Context.

Low-Context - People from low-context cultures (ex. Northern America, Europe, Australia) tend to be more direct and explicit, valuing clarity, brevity and honesty. The listener does not need to catch all the nonverbal cues or ‘read in between the lines.’ Negotiations typically end with detailed and highly specific contracts. Confrontations and critical feedback are not shied away from.

How to engage: Clarity is the key. Instead of relying on non-verbal cues or implicit messages, be clear and explicit. Understand that feedback and opinions are valued, not unwanted. When on the receiving end of feedback or criticism, do not take it personally – keep in mind that being more forthright and direct doesn’t necessarily mean disrespect.

High-Context - People from high-context cultures (ex. Asia, Middle East) tend to rely on the ‘understood’ message. Even a simple “yes” might be subject to interpretation depending on tone of voice, facial expressions, and context. Negotiations tend to be lengthy and given less importance than the relationship and collective interest.

How to engage: “Guanxi” (which means ‘relationships and network’) is the key. It is the foundation for almost every business and team interaction in Asia. Taking time to carefully grow trust and rapport is necessary for creating a safe environment where high-context employees can communicate more freely.

Without knowledge of these distinctions, High Context communicators can see their counterparts as rude, insulting, and insensitive, while Low Context communicators can see their counterparts as ambiguous, without opinion, ‘always blank-faced,’ etc.

Explaining how different people communicate and give feedback can help adjust expectations and avoid misunderstandings, which will lead to smoother teamwork. Facilitate an environment which promotes dialogue exchange and relationship building. This will not only foster better team spirit, but also enhance motivation and engagement levels.

Ultimately, the success of a multicultural team comes down to trust, understanding and empathy.

Encompassing all these elements in our day-to-day work situations will make everyone happier.

Do You Think You Procrastinate?

Procrastination is no stranger to us; I have seen people beat themselves up over and over again with the guilt of being a procrastinator, so I was inspired to demystify a few things about this label.

• If you have a tendency to produce great results with last minute execution; this doesn’t necessarily mean you are a procrastinator. In this case, you could have a powerful association in your subconscious mind of getting an adrenaline rush as the deadline approaches, and that’s when you produce your best work and get it done on time.

• If you push yourself beyond your body’s capacity to achieve an overwhelming amount of tasks in a day, and don’t ‘get it all done’; this does not mean you are a procrastinator. You just have an unrealistic expectation of what you can do, and are pushing your body beyond its capability.

• If you manage to complete all urgent tasks on time, when it comes to non-urgent tasks you find yourself distracted by going on Facebook a few times a day; this does not mean you are a procrastinator. Again this is more an issue of boredom and an addiction to the adrenaline.

If you are a true procrastinator the tendency of avoiding doing things would show up everywhere and all the time; in returning phone calls, in doing your daily chores, in completing assignments etc. For all these people procrastination is a defence mechanism, coming up to fill some sort of void with escapism. The void would most probably be something painful that you don’t want to face about yourself so it’s easier to avoiding taking any action. The first step to everything is acceptance and acknowledgement of what’s really going on, everything starts becoming clearer after that.

Why choose ESF? So many parents are keen on ESF schools. They are excellent schools, but not the only choice.

Preschool ESF operates 5 kindergartens. Students at these kindergartens earn priority for interviewing at an ESF primary school. ESF kindergartens have an established reputation, excellent teaching staff and a solid curriculum, fully accredited by IBO. International kindergartens are numerous. They run various curricula, adopt various approaches and vary in their selection criteria and process. Some are more reputable than others.

Primary ESF operates nine Primary schools. Parents can apply to only one school through what’s known as Central Allocation, based on their home address. They may apply to one or both of the ESF private schools in addition. These are Discovery College and Renaissance College.

All schools offer the IB. International schools vary wildly. Very few are charging fees as low as ESF fees.

Secondary A student graduating ESF primary is normally offered a place in an ESF secondary school.

All schools offer IB DP; some offer MYP, some offer BTec and some offer IGCSEs. ESF’s IB DP results are impressive: in 2016, 943 students (99%) of candidates passed the Diploma with an average score of 36.1(out of 45).

Cost, Competition & Catchment A few final words on three areas: Cost: Without a doubt, ESF schools provide a high quality education for a lot less than other schools.

2016-17 Fees: Y1: HK$100,700 | Y2-6: HK$83,500 Y7-11: HK$115,700 | Y12-13: HK$121,500 Competition: The competition is not nearly as intense as it is at some other top, international schools. ESF does select students to some extent, but the process is not too rigourous. That said, it’s risky to apply to one ESF school without any back-ups.

Catchment: The catchment area system means that parents don’t have flexibility to choose the school they prefer.

At other international and private schools, no such restriction exists.

We learned that was the story of Yvette Kong, a Hong Kong Olympian swimmer.

Yvette has been swimming competitively since 11. Glittered with awards and recognized as a potential star by the Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards, she won a scholarship to one of the most prestigious universities in California. Things couldn’t have gone any better for the young athlete.

Juggling her need to excel in school and in the pool, things eventually started to fall apart. Yvette was 20 years old.

Luckily, her coach urged her to seek professional help, and Yvette was able to confront the obstacles dragging her down.

Even the brightest and best can crumble when the pressure is not relieved.

“It’s okay to acknowledge that I wasn’t okay,” said Yvette in an interview before setting off for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Tiki vibes Creating the myth of a romanticised Polynesia in the late 30s, Don The Beachcomber borrowed from the Caribbean’s three flavour fundamentals of rum, sugar and lime to create “rhum rhapsodies” – drinks that encapsulated ‘summer in a glass’ and to be enjoyed throughout the year rain or shine. Through the fusing of island cultures, he invented a dreamlike mirage of Polynesian cocktail culture - which had previously never existed prior to this, given that the local island folk consumed French table wine and Okolehao – a Hawaiian moonshine distilled from the root of their native ti plant.

Following the decline in the trend’s popularity in the late 80s and with the turn of the millennium, a new Tiki revival movement started worldwide with aficionados meticulously tracing back the recipes of the original founding cocktails. Adding modern twists and flairs to create intrigue in seasoned drinks connoisseurs.

Therefore we would like to share with you the recipe for one of our signature sharing cocktails, Honi All The Way. Because Tiki Culture is all about sharing!

Honi All The Way: You will need one whole watermelon Cut the top off the watermelon and with a large spoon scoop out the flesh inside.

Put the flesh into a large blender and blend.

In the same blender pour: 200ml of Fresh Orange Juice 100ml of Passion Fruit Purée 100ml of Orange Liqueur 200ml of Light Cuban Rum 100ml of Dark Rum Blend everything together with a bit of ice Pour the blended mixture back in the watermelon. Top up with ice cubes, and garnish with edible flower to give it an even more tropical touch. Finish with extra long straws according to the number of persons sharing.

As they say in Hawaii “Okole Maluna!” Bottoms up.
