Networking Hong Kong is a Mecca for networking. It seems almost every night there is some event where you can meet new people. This should be seen as great way to make new friends or create more business. However, it’s not the thing most people really enjoy or use effectively.

Having networked in Hong Kong for over 20 years, and sold my first business through a chance meeting at such an event. Here are some tips I have gathered over the years.

Rule Number One Socializing in room full of strangers is #2 of peoples Phobias - Which means everyone else, would rather be elsewhere. So if you are feeling nervous you are the same as everyone else so best to make the most of it.

Rule Number Two People want to feel relaxed. If you are standing and looking nervous then people will avoid you, if you say hello to them that will make both parties feel more relaxed.

Rule Number Three If you say nothing, people will say nothing about you! You may get to enjoy the drinks and snacks, but have you accomplished anything?

Rule Number Four Einstein is dead!

People will not expect you to explain theory of relativity – talk about the weather!

Rule Number Five Queen Elizabeth sits on a throne! This is something my mother taught me as a child. In my hometown of Manchester the throne has another meaning, a toilet. My mum was asking me to focus on the toilet side of life. Even the queen, at the end of the day will sit on a toilet! Everyone is equal, we are all humans so no need to be fearful of approaching or talking to anyone, especially if you imagine them sitting on a toilet!

You need to understand how your letterhead design will be used, because there’s little point designing a full-page bleed when the office printer doesn’t print to the edge of the sheet. Instead, if you’re designing for a self-print solution, use generous margins at the edge of the page and avoid extremely light tints that might not reproduce well on office equipment.

Add special effects If you’re getting your letterheads printed professionally, consider what special effects you can employ to make your design take on extra attention. A simple way to add sophistication to your design is to print solid colour on the reverse of the letterhead. Other options include using gloss in certain areas, embossing, foil stamping and die-cutting.

Colourful Jewellery and Its Meaning What’s your favourite colour for jewellery and accessories? Are you drawn to passionate red?

Cool blue? Do you fancy the elegance of regal violet? We’re all drawn to different colours, depending on our personality, mood, or the outfit we’re trying to put together. The legends about colour are endless. Here’s just a small taste of them, to help you decide which colour will rule your fashion choices for the day.

Blue radiates tranquility, calm, stability and harmony, among other qualities, and makes us think of the sky and the ocean. Use graceful body movements- pretend someone is watching or filming you! Keep body postures slim and tall. Never point; do use your hands with small gestures.

Voice, Tone and Speech should be audible, not loud! Everything can be said nicely! Your tone of voice is much more important than your words. Also, speak interestingly by stressing important words.

Converse with positive remarks and sincere compliments. Nothing nice to say? Don’t say it. To continue conversations, reply with longer answers.

Offer help - don’t wait to be asked. Holding or opening doors is required by whoever reaches the door first, to avoid the door banging and to help the next person, especially if they are older or carrying bulky packages.

How often should I see the dentist? Must I go if I don’t have any pain?

We recommend regular dental check ups every six months to ensure clean and healthy teeth and gums. Are xrays safe? Are they really necessary?

Xrays or Radiographs are essential in helping the dentist diagnose conditions such as decay in between the teeth and gum disease. Previous crowns and fillings can also be checked. At Bayside Dental we use the latest techniques in digital radiography for faster, clearer images and, more importantly, less radiation.

Several studies have shown that dental xrays emit the lowest amount of radiation when compared to natural (outer space) and atmospheric radiation.

In addition, our dentists take every precaution to ensure that we take xrays only when necessary, for example, during new patient appointments, checking wisdom teeth, etc. It is always helpful to bring your previous xrays to our dentists, especially if they are within the last year or so.

At what age should I take my child to the dentist for the first check-up?

We usually recommend bringing your child for a dental examination between age 2 to 2 and a half years. It can be beneficial for you to bring your child with you to your own dental check up before this time to familiarise them with the dental environment. At the first appointment the dentist will focus on checking the teeth, reinforcing teeth cleaning techniques and giving dietary advice. The Everyday Life of Today’s Connected Consumer These days, app-packed smartphones and bandwidthbusting broadband connections are becoming the norm.

Take a look around Hong Kong’s streets, trains and buses and you will notice that more people have their noses buried into a smartphone than a book. In a recent worldwide survey of college students and workers aged 18-30 we find out how their new connected reality affects daily life.

As part of their morning routine, nine out of ten find checking their smartphones is equally as necessary as getting dressed and brushing their teeth. Some always stay online with 60% of Gen-Y members compulsively checking for emails, texts or social media updates. Whilst one in five admitted they text while driving and half of them said they do so during meals.

About 87% have a Facebook account and one in ten leave Facebook open all the time. Almost 90% say they upload photos to share or store on Internet sites and 62% frequently upload videos.

There is no clear line between the workday and personal time – they both blend and overlap. A third use smartphones in the bathroom while three out of four people use smartphones in bed. Two thirds spend the same amount of time (or more) with family and friends online than in person. Fewer than half said their online and offline identities were the same. Without smartphones, 2 out of 5 said they would feel anxious.

This report shows that Internet connectivity – and especially mobile devices – has shaped the mindset and behavior of the Gen-Y workforce and consumers. It also shows how we are living in an always-connected, alwayson society.

In the future, networked connections will be more relevant and valuable than ever before, creating unprecedented opportunities for countries, businesses and individuals.

‘Workout’ Jargon Serious and effective workouts don’t start and shouldn’t start without a level of competency in one’s own health and a well qualified trainer. Ensure you have your health evaluations done and use the latest technology to have your fitness levels tested. Body composition, blood pressure, anthropometrics, flexibility and posture all need to be assessed to create a training programme.

One of the latest techniques is High Intensity Interval Training called Tabata. This training strategy alternates periods of short, intense aerobic exercise with timed rest periods resulting in improved metabolism, strength gains and fat burning so bringing about a lower resting heart rate and leaner muscle mass. Tabata was founded by a Japanese scientist named Izumi Tabata and fellow colleagues at a department of physiology in Japan and is now widely practiced all over the world.

Circuit training is another training strategy which is now very popular. Circuit training is short bursts of resistance exercise using moderate weights and frequent repetitions, followed quickly by another burst of exercise targeting a different muscle group.

Because the exerciser switches between muscle groups, no rest is needed between exercises. This gets the heart rate up and sometimes, to up heart rate further, aerobics are sprinkled between the resistance exercises.

TRX Suspension Training is a unique training tool that allows you to use your own body weight and gravity as resistance. Users of any fitness level make progress because the TRX Training puts you in control and allows you to safely increase and decrease the resistance.

Coordination Matters Dressing well is an important part of life, one that speaks volumes before you’ve even spoken.

Coordination plays a big role in dressing well and one thing a lot of people struggle with is pairing patterns together.

Much like any art, the key to coordinating patterns is achieving the right balance in the components, which in this case is the size, design, colour and intensity of the pattern.

Solids are always a safe bet. The strongest authoritative professional clothing is no pattern – a solid colour. Some men make the mistake of trying to jazz up the traditional formalwear ensembles which often results in something too loud or gaudy or sometimes just plain odd.

Of course, solids have their limitation; an entire outfit comprised of solids doesn’t always work.

When coordinating three components (such as a suit, shirt and tie or a suit, blouse and scarf) one basic “rule” to follow is “Two Plains and One Fancy” meaning that two of the three components should be in a plain fabric (solid) and the third should be fancy (patterned). For people who are unsure of what can and cannot be paired together, this is a good rule to follow.

As you get more comfortable mixing patterns, there is no reason you can’t mix two or more patterns on the same ensemble. Pairing patterns together however, is not an easy task for most. Follow these basics tips to avoid resembling a clown: - You can mix two or more patterns just make certain that some of the colours in each match, and the patterns are not the same size or type.

- Bright strong patterns should be paired with subtle ones.

- Pinstripes and subtle self-patterned fabric suits work almost like a solid since you have to be close to see the pattern (they can therefore be paired with patterned shirts).

- ou can wear a stripe tie and a striped shirt if the scales are different. A fine-striped shirt goes perfectly well with a thick, repp or Regimental striped tie.

Successfully mixing patterns is only one of four elements that comprise clothing coordination; colour, fabric weight and fabric texture are also extremely important.

A Tour of Turkish Cuisine Would someone go to Turkey just to eat out? Yes! Turkish food is famous throughout the world, and is considered one of the pre-eminent cuisines globally. • Wear UV protective sunglasses. Get polarized or UV400 lenses, NOT just darker lenses. The lenses that only make the world darker will just make your pupils dilate and don’t do a thing to stop the UV rays.

• Do not read in dim light. Reading in dim light can cause eye strain but will not damage your eyes. If your eyes feel tired, stop for a while and take a break.

Visit your optometrist every year. They can diagnose problems that may be fixed with glasses, contacts, or surgery. They will also check for dry eyes or problems with your retina.

Pack light. Don’t get carried away and pack big bags of clothes and other stuff. The lighter you travel, the easier it will be for you in carrying you luggage around while travelling. Ensure you carry medicines.

Buy and read a good guide book about the country you are going to visit. It will give you a good idea about the place in terms of the places you want to visit, type of clothing you should carry, amount of money you should carry etc.

Pack an extra set of clothes in your hand carry so that you don’t end up buying expensive clothing just because the airline lost your luggage and you have nothing to wear.

Bring snacks. Eating in a foreign country can sometimes be a task and your snacks will keep you going till you find the perfect place to dine.

Make photocopies of all passports, visas, IDs etc. and keep with you just in case. Also email yourself a set of these documents for easy retrieval.

Take an extra memory card for your camera so that you have the freedom to take as many pictures as you like.

Arrive at airports early. Airports may not be the best places to spend time but missing a flight will be even worse.

Get up and walk around in the plane specially on a long flight. It is good for the circulation and may also help a bit with the boredom of a long haul flight.

Have an emergency source of funds with you for any emergencies and treat your passport as the most valuable item you possess during travel. Also have an emergency contact back home.

If your friends back home don’t see your updated Facebook status for an hour, it’s ok. Enjoy the sights of the place you are in and forget about phone calls and internet for the moment.

Here are some simple hair treatments using natural ingredients that you can easily find at home.

Oil Massage Oiling will help restore hair moisture. Massage your scalp with coconut oil, olive oil or almond oil; combining all three is very good for your hair as well. Leaving it on overnight would be great, but if you are in a hurry, keep it on for an hour and wash it with mild shampoo.

Egg Mask Mix egg yolk in three tablespoons of olive oil and one tablespoon of honey. Gently apply and massage it in your hair and cover it with a shower cap leaving it on for around one hour. Wash it off with mild shampoo.

Papaya Mask Papaya is known to be rich in proteins, which your hair requires in order to maintain its shine, moisture and growth. Mash two medium slices of papaya with a fork or blend it. Mix two tablespoons yogurt in it, and apply to your scalp and hair. Cover your hair with a shower cap to lock in the moisture. Leave it on for 30 minutes, and then wash with shampoo.

Honey Rinse Another easy homemade conditioner for hair is honey. Sounds sticky and messy but it will do wonders to your hair! Mix two tablespoons honey in four cups of warm water and apply to your hair after you shampoo/condition your hair. If your child doesn’t get any offers and they are aged 3-5, they can stay in preschool. Then, you can roll-over your applications in the same schools for one more year and hope a space opens up.

It would also be a good idea to apply to at least one or two more schools at this point. You may consider any private or DSS school that mostly start at 6.

3. Daytime Drama: For Wheatish Complexion The one color that’s perfect for day wear and looks great on wheatish complexions? Brown! Line your eyes with a dark brown eye pencil (for a natural effect, “wiggle” your pencil on the lash line rather than just drawing a straight line), then sweep a taupe eye shadow over lids.

Line your lips with a skin-colored lip liner, but don’t fill them in with a plain brown lipstick.

Instead mix the brown with a light pink for a younger, more flattering hue. Finish by applying a pink blusher for a youthful look.

4. Evening Glamour: Heavy Makeup For Special Evenings Heavy metal may not be your choice of music, but it’s the perfect pick when it comes to creating a special look for the evening. Join the gold rush by first using black eyeliner to draw a slim wing on your upper lid, extending the color past the outer corners and then dusting a gold-hued eye shadow over the lids.

Apply a nude or bronze-colored lipstick on your lips and – if you’re feeling daring – sweep a bit of gold shadow over cheekbones and brow bones for a glamorous sheen.
