Networking Hong Kong is a Mecca for networking. It seems almost every night there is some event where you can meet new people. This should be seen as great way to make new friends or create more business. However, it’s not the thing most people really enjoy or use effectively. Having networked in Hong Kong for over 20 years, and sold my first business through a chance meeting at such an event. Here are some tips I have gathered over the years. Rule Number One Socializing in room full of strangers is #2 of peoples Phobias - Which means everyone else, would rather be elsewhere. So if you are feeling nervous you are the same as everyone else so best to make the most of it. Rule Number Two People want to feel relaxed. If you are standing and looking nervous then people will avoid you, if you say hello to them that will make both parties feel more relaxed. Rule Number Three If you say nothing, people will say nothing about you! You may get to enjoy the drinks and snacks, but have you accomplished anything? Rule Number Four Einstein is dead! People will not expect you to explain theory of relativity – talk about the weather! Rule Number Five Queen Elizabeth sits on a throne! This is something my mother taught me as a child. In my hometown of Manchester the throne has another meaning, a toilet. My mum was asking me to focus on the toilet side of life. Even the queen, at the end of the day will sit on a toilet! Everyone is equal, we are all humans so no need to be fearful of approaching or talking to anyone, especially if you imagine them sitting on a toilet! Happy Networking!

Hong Kong Resource Guide 2013’s Charity Partner - Rotary Club Kowloon Golden Mile The liveliest & friendliest Rotary Club in Hong Kong What Is Rotary? Rotary is a global network of community volunteers. Rotary club members are business, professional, and community leaders in your locality who meet regularly to plan and implement community service activities and network with other professionals. For those interested, members can also choose to become involved in international humanitarian service efforts. More than 1.2 million men and women in over 200 countries and geographical areas belong to over 33,000 Rotary clubs. Rotary builds international understanding through scholarships, exchange programs, and humanitarian grants. Throughout the world, Rotary clubs participate in a broad range of educational, intercultural, and humanitarian activities designed to improve the lives of others.
Benefits of Membership Belonging to a Rotary club provides members with an opportunity to make a contribution to their own communities and to communities around the world. Members may join Rotary for many reasons, including community involvement, personal development, professional networking, and camaraderie with fellow members. But perhaps the most important benefit is the satisfaction gained from making a real difference in the world.
Service above Self From the earliest days of the organization, Rotarians were concerned with promoting high ethical standards in their professional lives. One of the world’s most widely printed and quoted statements of business ethics is The 4-Way Test, which was created in 1932 by Rotarian Herbert J. Taylor. The 4-Way Test has been translated into more than a hundred languages and published in thousands of ways. It asks the following four questions: Of the things we think, say or do: Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build goodwill & better friendship? Will it be beneficial to all concerned? For more information, visit www.rckgm.org or email neerja@nsujanani.com

Top Impressions with your Business Stationery The stationery that you choose for your business will help clients form an impression of your company. Ensuring that your branding strategy is incorporated into the design will help people recognize your company and understand the message that you’re trying to convey. Color Scheme Your business stationary should include color to make it stand out. Matching the colors in your logo to those on your stationery is a good idea for branding purposes. Choose complementary colors for your stationery, as they look best together. For example, if you use bright colors in your logo, choose bright colors for your stationery. Paper Quality Choosing high-quality paper for your business stationery can make it appear more professional. A client will notice the difference between standard photocopier paper and thick, glossy, highquality paper. This small detail can be enough to change the perception of your company in the mind of a potential client. Clean Space Choosing a design that offers elements of clean white space will help your message stand out. A design that is too busy will distract clients from noticing the important things on the stationery. Font Selecting font styles and colors that are easy to read is a necessity and keep it within your brand guidelines. Text should be printed in an easy-to-read format. Design for the medium. It used to be that letterheads were exclusively designed for print; they’d be professionally printed and then or printed over in the office. Yet paper is becoming a precious commodity in the digital era, and many letterhead designs will only every see an office printer - being printed directly using a Word template or similar. You need to understand how your letterhead design will be used, because there’s little point designing a full-page bleed when the office printer doesn’t print to the edge of the sheet. Instead, if you’re designing for a self-print solution, use generous margins at the edge of the page and avoid extremely light tints that might not reproduce well on office equipment. Add special effects If you’re getting your letterheads printed professionally, consider what special effects you can employ to make your design take on extra attention. A simple way to add sophistication to your design is to print solid colour on the reverse of the letterhead. Other options include using gloss in certain areas, embossing, foil stamping and die-cutting.

Colourful Jewellery and Its Meaning What’s your favourite colour for jewellery and accessories? Are you drawn to passionate red? Cool blue? Do you fancy the elegance of regal violet? We’re all drawn to different colours, depending on our personality, mood, or the outfit we’re trying to put together. The legends about colour are endless. Here’s just a small taste of them, to help you decide which colour will rule your fashion choices for the day. Blue radiates tranquility, calm, stability and harmony, among other qualities, and makes us think of the sky and the ocean. If the mood you wish to project is one of tranquil purity, choose blue topaz or tourmaline. Bright turquoise is sure to reflect a sense of surety and calm. Jewellery such as sparkling earrings or a sterling silver necklace will draw attention with their, bewitching blue opal. In the past, purple was extracted from the shell of a very particular snail, so rare and precious that only royalty could afford clothes of purple cloth. To this day, purple and violet are associated with royalty and nobility. The various purple hues also evoke mystery, transformation, wisdom and enlightenment - perhaps because, in some shades, they represent a mixture of passionate red and serene blue. Jewellery with violet or purple gemstones such as the amethyst radiates sensitivity, deep feeling, and a certain regal bearing. Red is associated with the fiery planet Mars, with energy, with the rising and the setting of the sun and with fire itself. Red is the colour of life. Jewellery with red gemstones such as the garnet projects dash, energy and the passions of the living. Wear red-gemstone jewellery to exude vigor, joy and a burning love for life. Orange is a combination colour - in this case, of yellow and red. It’s considered a warm color and, like red, expresses energy. Orange also has luminous qualities, and symbolizes balance, warmth and enthusiasm. Some say it even “opens the chakras”, radiating a welcoming of all life has to offer. Jewellery with orange gemstones such as the amber or carnelian to project optimism, warmth, kind-heartedness and happiness. All-natural motifs have long been a trend in jewellery, and green gemstones, whose colour is representative of nature, certainly fit the bill. Green reminds us of the environment, health, renewal, youth, spring and generosity. Moreover, the cool green hue of gemstones, like the green peridot in these pieces, radiate a soothing calm associated with green’s healing powers. Gems such as green jade and green aventurine also radiate harmony and peace. Nisa Huber is a jewellery designer who is passionate about stones and jewellery and brings to Hong Kong personally designed pieces hand made in Turkey and India. Impressive 1st Impressions Umm, I’d love to know that person ..... Do you realise you need to attract people to like you, hire you, retain you and promote you? Be aware that people notice one another and create instant impressions and judgements, good or bad, in minutes. It is said, ‘you don’t get a second chance to make a great first impression’! But in reality, you always have chances to make great impressions any time. Here are some valuable tips to attract people to you! First, project the right outer image, well termed as Image Management! Just like attractive ads, brochures, foods and packaging, everyone can make themselves attractive and also use impressive body language. Great grooming is a must (as not everyone is born beautiful). We are always covered in clothes, but skin and hair is always exposed and gets messy. In the urban dictionary ‘rat’s nest’ refers to messy hair and ‘autrine’ is beautiful skin and hair. Dress to Impress! It’s actually your ‘attire’- everything from tip to toe. Never expose bad body proportions. Correct these with fabrics and colours: wear darker colours on heavy areas (that’s why belts are worn mostly in darker colours); use lighter shades to add bulk. For a slim look, wear vertical designs, V necks, buttons etc.; learn fitting tricks; add accessories - jewellery, scarves and ties add glamour and elongate the body. Display self confidence - practice meeting, greeting and introducing yourself and others clearly, with a sincere smile. Smiles do hide nervousness and embarrassments. Rising, is a sign of respect – do rise for older people, important people and to receive guests. When in doubt, rise. Meeting and greeting people -be friendly or you may be considered snooty, proud, haughty, reserved, an introvert, shy or dumb. Notice newcomers, introduce yourself and others; Use people’s names, it gives attention and helps to remember names. People will surely appreciate and admire you. Use graceful body movements- pretend someone is watching or filming you! Keep body postures slim and tall. Never point; do use your hands with small gestures. Voice, Tone and Speech should be audible, not loud! Everything can be said nicely! Your tone of voice is much more important than your words. Also, speak interestingly by stressing important words. Converse with positive remarks and sincere compliments. Nothing nice to say? Don’t say it. To continue conversations, reply with longer answers. Offer help - don’t wait to be asked. Holding or opening doors is required by whoever reaches the door first, to avoid the door banging and to help the next person, especially if they are older or carrying bulky packages. Listening skills are equally important - everyone needs attention and loves to be heard. Have something to say, including ‘Oh’, ‘really’ ‘then....’, ‘that’s interesting’ etc. People appreciate a good listener. Ultimately gain popularity, respect and rewards!!! It’s the difference between you being ordinary or ‘extra’ ordinary! Enjoy life both ways- from your side and others’ side too! From your friendly Dentist A few FAQs from your friendly, neighbourhood Dentist... How often should I see the dentist? Must I go if I don’t have any pain? We recommend regular dental check ups every six months to ensure clean and healthy teeth and gums. Dental problems can present painlessly, therefore it is not advisable to wait until you are in pain to see the dentist. We endeavor to see patients in pain the same day so please give us a call if something doesn’t feel right. Are xrays safe? Are they really necessary? Xrays or Radiographs are essential in helping the dentist diagnose conditions such as decay in between the teeth and gum disease. Previous crowns and fillings can also be checked. At Bayside Dental we use the latest techniques in digital radiography for faster, clearer images and, more importantly, less radiation. Several studies have shown that dental xrays emit the lowest amount of radiation when compared to natural (outer space) and atmospheric radiation. In addition, our dentists take every precaution to ensure that we take xrays only when necessary, for example, during new patient appointments, checking wisdom teeth, etc. It is always helpful to bring your previous xrays to our dentists, especially if they are within the last year or so. At what age should I take my child to the dentist for the first check-up? We usually recommend bringing your child for a dental examination between age 2 to 2 and a half years. It can be beneficial for you to bring your child with you to your own dental check up before this time to familiarise them with the dental environment. At the first appointment the dentist will focus on checking the teeth, reinforcing teeth cleaning techniques and giving dietary advice. Early prevention and good habits will give your child the best possible start in caring for their teeth. What can I do to whiten my teeth? Teeth discolour over time, whether it’s from smoking, drinking coffee, or simply getting older. The good news is, it is possible to reverse this discolouration to a certain extent by teeth whitening. When done properly, teeth whitening is safe, effective and gives you a natural, younger smile. A check up is necessary to make sure you will benefit from this procedure. What are implants? Are they painful? When a tooth is unsaveable/lost, implants can be placed. Implants are small titantium fixtures that integrate into your bone to give you a strong and natural looking tooth replacement. This procedure is not painful and will save the rest of your teeth from unnecessary loading which occurs when teeth are missing.

The Everyday Life of Today’s Connected Consumer These days, app-packed smartphones and bandwidthbusting broadband connections are becoming the norm. Take a look around Hong Kong’s streets, trains and buses and you will notice that more people have their noses buried into a smartphone than a book. In a recent worldwide survey of college students and workers aged 18-30 we find out how their new connected reality affects daily life. As part of their morning routine, nine out of ten find checking their smartphones is equally as necessary as getting dressed and brushing their teeth. Some always stay online with 60% of Gen-Y members compulsively checking for emails, texts or social media updates. Whilst one in five admitted they text while driving and half of them said they do so during meals. About 87% have a Facebook account and one in ten leave Facebook open all the time. Almost 90% say they upload photos to share or store on Internet sites and 62% frequently upload videos. There is no clear line between the workday and personal time – they both blend and overlap. A third use smartphones in the bathroom while three out of four people use smartphones in bed. Two thirds spend the same amount of time (or more) with family and friends online than in person. Fewer than half said their online and offline identities were the same. Without smartphones, 2 out of 5 said they would feel anxious. This report shows that Internet connectivity – and especially mobile devices – has shaped the mindset and behavior of the Gen-Y workforce and consumers. It also shows how we are living in an always-connected, alwayson society. In the future, networked connections will be more relevant and valuable than ever before, creating unprecedented opportunities for countries, businesses and individuals. ‘Workout’ Jargon Serious and effective workouts don’t start and shouldn’t start without a level of competency in one’s own health and a well qualified trainer. Ensure you have your health evaluations done and use the latest technology to have your fitness levels tested. Body composition, blood pressure, anthropometrics, flexibility and posture all need to be assessed to create a training programme. One of the latest techniques is High Intensity Interval Training called Tabata. This training strategy alternates periods of short, intense aerobic exercise with timed rest periods resulting in improved metabolism, strength gains and fat burning so bringing about a lower resting heart rate and leaner muscle mass. Tabata was founded by a Japanese scientist named Izumi Tabata and fellow colleagues at a department of physiology in Japan and is now widely practiced all over the world. Circuit training is another training strategy which is now very popular. Circuit training is short bursts of resistance exercise using moderate weights and frequent repetitions, followed quickly by another burst of exercise targeting a different muscle group. Because the exerciser switches between muscle groups, no rest is needed between exercises. This gets the heart rate up and sometimes, to up heart rate further, aerobics are sprinkled between the resistance exercises. TRX Suspension Training is a unique training tool that allows you to use your own body weight and gravity as resistance. Users of any fitness level make progress because the TRX Training puts you in control and allows you to safely increase and decrease the resistance. Yoga is intended to restore health and to strengthen and purify the body and mind. It requires plenty of patience, perserverance and good guidance to overcome initial physical, mental and spiritual obstacles. In time yoga practitioners will benefit from more focused thought and awareness, cleansed internal systems and increased flexibility of both muscles and fascia in the body. So please! Get yourself the best trainer possible – a coach to challenge your body and mind!

Top Tips for Camouflaging For those eager to look thin NOW, the fastest and most dynamic approach is to learn the techniques of camouflage, which covers up any unwanted padding and accentuates your qualities. Below are 6 creative techniques for you to look 10 pounds slimmer! 1. Restrict the amount of color worn. A blouse and skirt or pants of one color with a contrasting jacket is a great way to achieve an effect with color that streamlines the body. 2. Wear garments with strong vertical lines that are close together. Vertical lines create an elongating effect and can be used as part of the fabric design. Have fun combining this feature with the style of your outfit with pleats, seaming, and jacket edges. 3. Avoid clutter. Reduce frills, ruffles, front button blouses, gathers and bulky scarves – they just add volume! 4. Show off your skinny bits. No matter what we think of our bodies we all naturally have slim features, namely our wrists, ankles, earlobes, waist and neck. Cover our larger areas with a dark-colored simple garment ending just below the widest part so the eye just sees the thinner and more desirable bits. 5. Wear well fitted garments. When trying on clothes don’t be afraid to sit down or walk around as you would normally. Wear soft body fabrics such as wool crepe, wool jersey, silk blends and cotton for basic garments. Finally it’s most important to keep FEELING great about the way you look. Enjoy dressing up, looking lighter and feeling fabulous!

Top 10 HK Markets Markets are a way of life in Hong Kong, and probably one of the best places to bring your whole family to experience a slice of local life. Not only are the city’s wet markets a thriving place to get great bargains on the freshest produce in town, but there are also plenty of market places and specialized streets where you can get the best deals on clothes, toys for the tykes and great bargains on just about anything and everything. SHAM SHUI PO: Toys and Party Supplies - Sham Shui Po is the place to go if you’re in the market for electronics, crafts supplies, discounted clothes, vintage furniture and just about anything under the sun. For a great bargain on toys for the little ones, head to Fuk Wing Street (also known as Toys Street). It’s also a great place for children’s party supplies. Score! SHANGHAI STREET: Kitchenwares - You’ll find pro chefs rummaging through the bargains in the kitchenware shops lining Shanghai Street. Scoop up handmade woks and knives, Bialetti coffee makers and Riedel stemware to Le Creuset crockery and more; with so many goods that the shops spill into the street. There are also larger appliances and furnishings for restaurant kitchens. BIRD GARDEN - Bring the whole family to the Yuen Po Street Bird Garden in Prince Edward; in this charming antique-style Chinese park, you’ll see a host of exotic birds on display and for sale. FLOWER MARKET - Also in Prince Edward, seasonal blooms are on display at the popular Flower Market. It’s booming on auspicious days, such as Chinese New Year, Buddha’s birthday and Ching Ming. It’s a great place to teach kids about horticulture, and for those with an aspiring green thumb. GOLDFISH MARKET - You’re looking for junior’s first pet, but you don’t want to commit to a furry creature just yet. Venture with your kiddies to the Goldfish Market and choose a few finned friends for them. If your kids want something more interactive, the market also sells turtles of varying sizes, along with more tanks and aquariums than all the fish in the sea. HOLLYWOOD ROAD: Antiques and Galleries - Walk from Possession Street down to Lyndhurst Terrace and you’re bound to stumble across plenty of antique dealers and galleries. Be cautious about fakes when paying top prices! If you’re in the market for something fun and colorful for your home, or just some souvenirs for your family abroad, head to the outdoor stalls on Cat Street. There are vintage postcards, sculptures and fun knick knacks from a bygone era. JADE MARKET - Jade has long been worth its weight in gold since Chinese imperial times. Jade jewelry and mementos continue to be passed on as family heirlooms. For your own piece of Chinese history, venture to the Jade Market at the intersection of Kansu Street and Battery Street in Yau Ma Tei, to find an assortment of vendors selling this prized stone. To ward off scams, ask lots of questions before purchasing, and make sure the stone is heavy and cool to the touch. WESTERN MARKET - Go back in time with your little ladies and gents in tow. Opened in 1906, the Western Market is the oldest covered market in HK and deemed a heritage building. Now it’s a multi-use mall: souvenir and snacks shops are on the ground floor, while the 2nd floor belongs to The Grand Stage restaurant—a lovely Chinese restaurant with good dimsum. The restaurant is also a popular setting for parties and weddings. SNEAKERS STREET - Your active munchkins need new running shoes again! Don’t sweat it, take them to Sneakers Street in Mong Kok (along Argyle Street to Fa Yuen Street) for the best assortment of discounted runners in town. STANLEY MARKET - Cruise the alleways of Stanley Market, the one-stop retail paradise for children’s and babies’ overruns and sample clothing at hard-to-beat prices. You will also find everything from beach buckets to ski gear for the whole family. How to Deal With Itchy Skin and Frantic Scalp Skin problems are not restricted to cold weather. Heat and humidity can cause itchy scalp and all kinds of irritating skin conditions. While you cannot change external and environmental influences, here are a few must-use tips for allergy-free skin: 1. Oat: A natural remedy that has been used for centuries to treat dry skin. A substance called avenanthramides in oat fights inflammation and redness. 2. Fish and flaxseed oil: Both contain fatty acids will protect your skin from the environment and keep it moisturized 3. Luke warm bath: Hot water dehydrates skin and worsens inflammation. You can also use oatmeal scrub/soap while bathing to soothe the itchiness 4. Chemical free moisturizer: Chemicals trigger allergies or worsen skin conditions. According the University Of Iowa Healthcare, you should select moisturizers which are rich in oils. The oils trap and seal water in the stratum corneum, which prevent dryness. 5. Wear loose light clothing. Allow your skin to breathe and lessen rubbing against the irritated areas. 6. Beware of laundry detergent.. Residues sometimes remain on your clothing and hence lead to skin irritation. 7. Chamomile is your best friend. Drinking chamomile tea is not only beneficial to your health and mindset, but the damp, cool tea bag will also soothe skin itches. 8. Get rid of dust mites: Journal of Investigative Dermatology reported that exposure to microscopic dust mites promotes inflamed, irritated skin. Vacuum clean your household and beddings at least once a week. A little extra tip on Itchy Scalp: the causes might be due to your dietary habits, stress, hormonal balance as well as the hair care products you use. Chemicals in liquid shampoo might become residues and can irritate scalps. Bacteria that are trapped in your finger nails can infect open wounds caused by scratching. Use soaps or hair wash that contain lavender, eucalyptus, tea tree or peppermint. Lemon is great for oily hair. Apply Rosemary and aloe vera on itchy scalp are the most popular and gentle approach.

Beat the foreign exchange trap How to transfer money overseas reasonably and securely Overseas money transfers are big business for banks and turn them a tidy profit. But if you want to save money, when wiring a large sum of money abroad, the best option is usually to dodge your bank and use a Foreign Exchange (FX) broker. For individual customers, buying a property abroad is likely to be the biggest foreign exchange transaction, but other transfers for holidays, emigrating or investing in business can also mean large sums of money being transferred to various countries. In order to get the best deal for your money, it is important to shop around. A small percentage difference in the rate can result in large savings. For example, if you are a buying a home for £200,000 and you can find an FX firm offering an improvement of just 1 per cent, you would save £2,000. A good starting point is to ask your bank for a quote. It is unlikely to offer the best rate, but it does give you a benchmark – also, it may offer you special discounts or offers for being an existing customer. You should then check the rates and services that are offered from a range of top FX providers – both online and offline and compare their security and value added services. Keep in mind factors including fees, exchange rates (updated real-time), amount received, speed and method of transfer. People need to carefully select their currency specialist. Ensure the broker you use is licensed and experienced. Bear in mind when dealing with a foreign exchange broker to avoid companies that don’t require you to provide any identification documents. These are required by law and this could suggest the company is not a registered one. Don’t be afraid to ask questions to satisfy yourself you are dealing with a reputable company. Professional Counselling What does the word “counselling” mean? Counselling has risen from almost total obscurity to become the need in today’s time! Each one will interpret counselling differently. • Learn about oneself • Learn to solve problems • Share issues to unburden the conflict within Brief Introduction Individuals have both positive and negative emotions and some of the emotions are expressed either with great manifestations like anger, which is an outward expression. On other hand depression is like stilled waters on the surface but it is very deep within. Counselling can help people cope with a range of issues and emotions. Counselling is about guiding people on how to set their mind and their emotions and make people aware that it is up to them how they look at life. If they are able to regulate their mind then they will be able to take control of the situation. The task of counselling is to give the client an opportunity to explore, discover and clarify ways of living more realistically and towards greater wellbeing. The activity of counselling itself is designed to help with self-exploration and understanding. The process should help to identify thoughts, emotions and behaviors that, once assessed, may offer the client a greater sense of personal resources and self-determined change. Professional Counsellor A professional counsellor is trained to deal with feelings and emotions of individuals. Counsellors promote personal regard and respect within an approach of professional counselling and care that is non-judgmental, nondirective and of a reflective nature that encourages clients to work through their issues. Self Help Tips: • Anger: Control anger before it controls you. Know what triggers your anger. Be assertive and take the ownership of your feelings and situation. • Depression: Learn to be content with yourself. Cultivate positive thoughts. Build trust with your closed ones. • Anxiety: Build your self-confidence. Avoid situations and people that cause anxiety. Learn to accept constructive criticism and focus on your skills. Know your Body Constitution - Stay Healthy Since arriving from the UK five years ago, Sophie always felt most comfortable during the Hong Kong winter. It was during these cool months when she didn’t sweat so much and got relief from the skin problems that seemed to magically develop whenever the humidity went up. None of her friends experienced the same challenges however, so why do friends living in very similar circumstances face very different health issues? Chinese Medicine Body Constitution In Chinese Medicine the ancient concept of Body Constitutions has been used for thousands of years to explain such differences and address day-to-day health issues that in their sum can have a significant impact onto our lives. Explains Judy Xu, Chinese Medicine Nutritionist at Oriental Balance Limited: “Our individual Body Constitution is the result of our DNA, our lifestyle and the environment we live in. Understanding our body and the impact of our life circumstances allows us to address our current health issues and take a holistic approach towards prevention in the future”.
The Path to Balance and Health Once she fully understood her Hot & Humid Body Constitution, Sophie immediately started to alter her lifestyle and habits. She cut down on spicy foods and replaced her daily English breakfast tea with a cooling Chinese herbal tea. More challenging she also started to reduce the weekly alcohol intake to eliminate the humidity inside her body. ”Her lifestyle changes helped to reduce the humidity in Sophie’s body which is the cause of the excessive sweating and the skin impurities”, suggest Judy. In Balance with Nature Leveraging Chinese Medicine and understanding your Body Constitution is a mild and long-term approach to improve health and live a life that is in balance with nature.

Don’t just live. Milk: A wellness gift of Nature Milk is a complete form of food. It plays a very important role for the proper growth of the human body. It is a perfect & balanced diet. It contains carbohydrates, proteins, fats, minerals, and vitamins in the just right proportions which are required for the proper development of the body. Milk is full of calcium and phosphorus essential for stronger bones and healthier teeth, Vitamin A in milk helps improve eyesight. Riboflavin (or Vit. B2) helps the body metabolize amino acids, fatty acids, and carbohydrates. It is most beneficial for healthy hair, skin, and nails; making it an ideal choice for anti-aging in women. Niacin, (Vit. B3) in milk helps relieve pain in arthritis, helps in blood sugar control, detoxifies, lowers cholesterol and helps in production of sex hormones. Vitamin B12 in milk boosts one's energy level, and ups the metabolism. It enhances the memory too. Vitamin D in milk helps calcium absorption and milk proteins promote the healthy function of muscles and blood vessels. Lactic Acid in milk acts as an exfoliant and enzymes to help smooth skin. Milk as food is versatile. Right from our favorite beverages like tea, coffee, milk shakes, smoothies, ice- cream, desserts and many more, it has been pivotal in our diet across all cultures since early civilization. Beauty queen, Cleopatra was also known to take regular baths in fresh milk to keep her skin soft, supple and glowing. Milk in its purest form is rare now. Dishonesty, adulteration and poor practices in manufacturing processes and also at home, like boiling of milk, greatly destroys the nutritional value of milk.

Coordination Matters Dressing well is an important part of life, one that speaks volumes before you’ve even spoken. Coordination plays a big role in dressing well and one thing a lot of people struggle with is pairing patterns together. Much like any art, the key to coordinating patterns is achieving the right balance in the components, which in this case is the size, design, colour and intensity of the pattern. Solids are always a safe bet. The strongest authoritative professional clothing is no pattern – a solid colour. Some men make the mistake of trying to jazz up the traditional formalwear ensembles which often results in something too loud or gaudy or sometimes just plain odd. Of course, solids have their limitation; an entire outfit comprised of solids doesn’t always work. When coordinating three components (such as a suit, shirt and tie or a suit, blouse and scarf) one basic “rule” to follow is “Two Plains and One Fancy” meaning that two of the three components should be in a plain fabric (solid) and the third should be fancy (patterned). For people who are unsure of what can and cannot be paired together, this is a good rule to follow. As you get more comfortable mixing patterns, there is no reason you can’t mix two or more patterns on the same ensemble. Pairing patterns together however, is not an easy task for most. Follow these basics tips to avoid resembling a clown: - You can mix two or more patterns just make certain that some of the colours in each match, and the patterns are not the same size or type. - Bright strong patterns should be paired with subtle ones. - Pinstripes and subtle self-patterned fabric suits work almost like a solid since you have to be close to see the pattern (they can therefore be paired with patterned shirts). - ou can wear a stripe tie and a striped shirt if the scales are different. A fine-striped shirt goes perfectly well with a thick, repp or Regimental striped tie. Successfully mixing patterns is only one of four elements that comprise clothing coordination; colour, fabric weight and fabric texture are also extremely important. Dress yourself with an experienced and knowledgeable couture team who with their professional expertise creates for you a wardrobe that not only fits perfectly, but also portrays your desired image.... because clothes DO make the man (or woman).

A Tour of Turkish Cuisine Would someone go to Turkey just to eat out? Yes! Turkish food is famous throughout the world, and is considered one of the pre-eminent cuisines globally. The painstaking preparation of simple but fresh ingredients brings out the richness of their flavours in a way that never fails to delight. The range is enormous, from an array of soups to an astonishing variety of meze (traditional Turkish appetizers), followed by meat and fish dishes.Turkish food is largely the heritage of the Ottoman Cuisine, which can be described as a fusion and refinement of the Central Asian, Middle Eastern and Balkan cuisines. Olive oil, light spices and herbs, dough breads, vegetables, fish and kebabs are main highlights of Turkish Cuisine. Kebabs are dishes of plain or marinated meat either stewed or grilled. Lamb is the basic meat of Turkish kitchen. Pieces of lamb threaded on a skewer and grilled over charcoal form the famous “Sis kebab”, now known in many countries of the world. “Doner kebab” is another famous Turkish dish, being a roll of lamb or chicken on a vertical skewer turning parallel to a hot grill. You should also try “Alinazik”, “Sac kavurma”, “Tandir” and different types of “Kofte” as typical meat dishes. The aubergine is used in a wide variety of dishes from eggplant salad to stuffed eggplants. It can be cooked with onions, garlic and tomatoes and served cold as “imam bayildi”. A delicious Turkish specialty is “pilav”, a rice dish which is difficult for the inexperienced cook to prepare. “Borek” are pies of flaky pastry stuffed with meat, cheese or potatoes. The delicious Turkish natural yoghurt, “yogurt”, is justifiably renowned. A typical appetizer prepared with yogurt is “Cacik” and, of course, don’t forget to try “Manti”, with loads of yogurt. Turkish sweets are famous throughout the world and many of these have milk as the basic ingredient but the bestknown are “baklava” pastries. Among the national drinks, Turkish coffee, Turkish tea and aryan should be mentioned. Turkish coffee comes thick and dark in a small cup and may be served without sugar, with a little sugar or with a lot of sugar. Either way, it is truly delicious. If you like alcohol you can try “Raki” made of anise, it is called as “lions drink” because you must be strong as a lion to drink it. Mezes are “Hors d’oeuvres” or appetizers figuring mainly at meals - eaten sparingly, they arouse the appetite before the meal proper are served with specialty flat breads.

Care for your Eyes Diet and regular upkeep are important factors in taking care of your eyes. Your eyes are the window to the world. It’s important that you take care of them. • Eat lots of fruits and veggies. Carrots (Beta Carotene), broccoli, bell peppers & brussels sprouts (Vitamin C), sweet potatoes & spinach (Lutein and Zeaxanthin), wild salmon & sardines (Omega-3) are ideal foods for healthy eyes. They contain the required antioxidants and minerals for keeping your eyes healthy. • Avoid wearing contact lenses for more than 19 hours. This can cause permanent sight damage as well as extreme discomfort to your eyes. Although contact lenses do let in a certain amount of oxygen, opticians recommend removing them at night to give your eyes a break and to increase the flow of oxygen to your eyeball. • Use cucumber on your eyelids. Press cold cucumber slices gently against eyelids 10 minutes before going to sleep at night to prevent puffiness. Cucumbers contain ascorbic acid and caffeic acid, which prevent water retention. • Wear UV protective sunglasses. Get polarized or UV400 lenses, NOT just darker lenses. The lenses that only make the world darker will just make your pupils dilate and don’t do a thing to stop the UV rays. • Do not read in dim light. Reading in dim light can cause eye strain but will not damage your eyes. If your eyes feel tired, stop for a while and take a break. Visit your optometrist every year. They can diagnose problems that may be fixed with glasses, contacts, or surgery. They will also check for dry eyes or problems with your retina.
Dia Datwani, Founder – 852eyes.com & Partner – Care Professional Optics Centre 852eyes.com is an online portal for Contact Lenses and Designer Eyewear at great discounts. Care Professional Optics Centre is a retail outlet where consumers can purchase Prescription Frames and Designer Sunglasses, they can also get their eyes tested by our in-house optometrists.
Travel without hiccups Hong Kong people love to travel... but if not the trip is not planned properly, it can ruin your holiday! Here are some tips and tricks which can help you plan your trip better and enjoy your holiday: • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •
When making reservations, make sure to double check everything including name spellings, flights, dates connecting times etc. Make sure everything is correct to avoid delays at immigrations & customs. Understand the time difference between your country and the country you are going to visit. Read up about jet lag and how to reduce its effects as jet lag can spoil the first few days of your trip. Make sure your passport is valid for at least 6 months from your travel date. Check if you require a visa to the country you are visiting and apply in advance if needed. Make sure you have overseas medical coverage and insurance. Try & learn a few basic phrases in the language of the country you will be visiting. The locals will appreciate it and it will come in very handy when you are at a place where no one understands your language or English. Respect and appreciate local customs and culture - you are a visitor. Pack light. Don’t get carried away and pack big bags of clothes and other stuff. The lighter you travel, the easier it will be for you in carrying you luggage around while travelling. Ensure you carry medicines. Buy and read a good guide book about the country you are going to visit. It will give you a good idea about the place in terms of the places you want to visit, type of clothing you should carry, amount of money you should carry etc. Pack an extra set of clothes in your hand carry so that you don’t end up buying expensive clothing just because the airline lost your luggage and you have nothing to wear. Bring snacks. Eating in a foreign country can sometimes be a task and your snacks will keep you going till you find the perfect place to dine. Make photocopies of all passports, visas, IDs etc. and keep with you just in case. Also email yourself a set of these documents for easy retrieval. Take an extra memory card for your camera so that you have the freedom to take as many pictures as you like. Arrive at airports early. Airports may not be the best places to spend time but missing a flight will be even worse. Get up and walk around in the plane specially on a long flight. It is good for the circulation and may also help a bit with the boredom of a long haul flight. Have an emergency source of funds with you for any emergencies and treat your passport as the most valuable item you possess during travel. Also have an emergency contact back home. If your friends back home don’t see your updated Facebook status for an hour, it’s ok. Enjoy the sights of the place you are in and forget about phone calls and internet for the moment. Don’t leave your baggage or valuables unattended or with a stranger, specially at the airport. • Remember to carry all your chargers, adapters etc. and remember to bring a electrical converter with you as per the country’s requirement. • Separate your source of money when abroad. Don’t keep all your cash & credit cards in your wallet. Keep some at a different place. Losing your wallet and all your money won’t be fun in a strange country. • And last but not the least, do not flaunt your camera, cash or jewelry as it encourages theft. Try not to look like a tourist and read the map before you hit the streets.

Dos & Donts of Eyebrow Threading Neat and well plucked eyebrows aren’t enough – a neatly groomed, flattering shape is what you need to frame your face. If you don’t feel skilled enough to perfect your own arches, consider threading– it’s a less painful alternative to waxing. DON’T stay silent in the chair. Communicate with your esthetician. Describe the shape you would like–low, medium, high or sharp arch; thick, medium or thin brows. You can bring photos, but a good shaper should be able to determine the most complimentary look for your facial structure. You may not have enough to work with to match a celebrity’s brows. DO know that a little post-threading redness is normal. It’s a natural reaction, and it should subside on its own within a few hours. If necessary, apply a cool compress to the area. DON’T put anything on your brows right after hair removal. Wait at least two hours before you apply moisturizers, cleansers or makeup directly to the threaded area to keep bacteria away from open pores. DO stay on top of your touch-ups. Estheticians will recommend clients come back every two weeks to keep their shape looking sharp and clean. You can get re-threaded as soon as the hair grows just above the skin. DON’T use a brow razor in between appointments! “They cut the hair at the surface similar to shaving. It does not remove the hair completely and it makes the hair that is left over very coarse and thick. Using a brow razor can lead to ingrown hairs and stubble and you run the risk of taking off too much hair.

Music makes the world go round! Does it not bother you each time someone says “the music industry no longer exists in Hong Kong” and that “all we have left is showbiz”? This bugs me because it is simply not true! Just look around you, good music is literally everywhere you look. We definitely have the pop music scene with local and international concerts going on all year round in Asia Expo and our good old Hong Kong Coliseum where you could sing along to the most popular hits from around the world. If you’re more into the indie-alternative side of Hong Kong’s music scene, check out places like the Underground HK, Hidden Agenda, Buskic, Full Cup Music and lots more great live music sources. Wanting to stay home away from the cloud and let music be your companion? Hong Kong’s also got legal online sources where you could listen to music styles of your choice 24/7. Online Radios like Pandora, Last FM, Google Play, iTunes Music Store and HKGFM.net, which plays music non-stop, allowing you to choose from different styles (ranging from great Asian hits, today’s top 40 mix to awesome oldies songs from the 80s and 90s). So you see, there’s a lot more to our city’s entertainment scene than just those pretty faces. Next time when someone comes around telling you we don’t have a music industry, you’ll know exactly where to take them!

Home Remedies for split ends in the Summer Waking up to a bad hair day and have to wash and style your hair frequently? Well, why not try some home remedies for split ends in the summer? Split ends happen due to lack of nourishment or lack of moisture due to sun exposure, rich chemical in shampoos, blow-drying, straightening, dyes and bleaches. All the above reasons dry out the hair and damage the amino acids present in your hair. If you think your hair is not growing fast, split ends could be a reason why. Here are some simple hair treatments using natural ingredients that you can easily find at home. Oil Massage Oiling will help restore hair moisture. Massage your scalp with coconut oil, olive oil or almond oil; combining all three is very good for your hair as well. Leaving it on overnight would be great, but if you are in a hurry, keep it on for an hour and wash it with mild shampoo. Egg Mask Mix egg yolk in three tablespoons of olive oil and one tablespoon of honey. Gently apply and massage it in your hair and cover it with a shower cap leaving it on for around one hour. Wash it off with mild shampoo. Papaya Mask Papaya is known to be rich in proteins, which your hair requires in order to maintain its shine, moisture and growth. Mash two medium slices of papaya with a fork or blend it. Mix two tablespoons yogurt in it, and apply to your scalp and hair. Cover your hair with a shower cap to lock in the moisture. Leave it on for 30 minutes, and then wash with shampoo. Honey Rinse Another easy homemade conditioner for hair is honey. Sounds sticky and messy but it will do wonders to your hair! Mix two tablespoons honey in four cups of warm water and apply to your hair after you shampoo/condition your hair. Leave it in your hair, and it will control hair dryness and frizz after wash Article written by Khyati Shah for HKYantoYan.com HKYantoYan.com is the biggest &only online platform reaching out to the diverse Indian community in Hong Kong. Searching for a school Finding the right school for your child and having that school choose your child is one of the most important decisions of your life. Here are 3 commonly asked questions. What’s the best school in Hong Kong? The best school is the best school for your child. And the best school for your child may not be the best school for your other child, or another’s child. When building a shortlist of schools, consider the following: - location - curriculum - fees - campus facilities - language(s) offered - graduates’ scores and placements At the end of the day, it’s about feeling that your child will fit in and prosper. I’ve heard it’s impossible to get into a top international school. Is that true? No, it’s simply not true. We have 100% success rate in placing children in private, international and ESF schools, such as Harrow, HKIS, ISF, VSA and CDNIS. The more flexible parents can be, the more the options open up. It’s important to apply to “enough” schools and understand that the schools can pick and choose. They’re under no obligation to pick your child. What if my child doesn’t get into an international school? Usually, parents apply to several schools and get several offers. If your child doesn’t get any offers and they are aged 3-5, they can stay in preschool. Then, you can roll-over your applications in the same schools for one more year and hope a space opens up. It would also be a good idea to apply to at least one or two more schools at this point. You may consider any private or DSS school that mostly start at 6.

Easy Makeup Looks For am & pm Whether it’s a laid back lunch or a formal cocktail do, these easy make-up looks promise to leave you looking your best. 1. Daytime Drama: For Smooth Fair Complexions Clear, smooth skin with a touch of color is the best way to look good in natural light. Get both by first applying foundation lightly with your fingers and concealing any imperfections, then sweeping a peachy-pink eye shadow over your eyelids (avoid shimmery formulations – they look too “done” for the day). Finish by dusting a soft-pink blusher on the apples of your cheeks and using your index finger to dab a soft pink lipstick on your lips – for a more natural finish. 2. Evening Glamour: Understated Elegance Evening dos call for make-up that will get you noticed – but isn’t over-the-top. So spike your foundation with a tiny bit of illuminating lotion, then line your eyes with black kohl. Add an element of surprise by blending first black, then bronze shadow over lids. To ‘hold” the look, apply two coats of mascara. While ruby or wine lips spell instant evening glamour, the color can sometimes look too strong. A subtler way to wear the hue – blend it with a nude-colored lipstick. Finish with a sweep of rosecolored blusher and you’re set to dazzle. 3. Daytime Drama: For Wheatish Complexion The one color that’s perfect for day wear and looks great on wheatish complexions? Brown! Line your eyes with a dark brown eye pencil (for a natural effect, “wiggle” your pencil on the lash line rather than just drawing a straight line), then sweep a taupe eye shadow over lids. Line your lips with a skin-colored lip liner, but don’t fill them in with a plain brown lipstick. Instead mix the brown with a light pink for a younger, more flattering hue. Finish by applying a pink blusher for a youthful look. 4. Evening Glamour: Heavy Makeup For Special Evenings Heavy metal may not be your choice of music, but it’s the perfect pick when it comes to creating a special look for the evening. Join the gold rush by first using black eyeliner to draw a slim wing on your upper lid, extending the color past the outer corners and then dusting a gold-hued eye shadow over the lids. Apply a nude or bronze-colored lipstick on your lips and – if you’re feeling daring – sweep a bit of gold shadow over cheekbones and brow bones for a glamorous sheen. Enjoy your day/night out!
