WELCOME FROM
Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events, Steve Dimopoulos
On behalf of the Victorian Government, I’d like to welcome you to the 2025 Melbourne International 3 Day Event.
Victoria is the sporting and events capital of Australia, and it is fitting we are once again hosting one of the country’s premier eventing competitions for another year at one of the top equestrian facilities in Australia.
Our Werribee Park Precinct is the perfect location to welcome our best riders to Victoria for five days of exciting eventing competition, including Dressage, Showjumping and Cross Country.
That’s why we’re proud to support the Championships through our Significant Sporting Events Program, which helps organisations to deliver national and international sporting events.
The program has secured more than 1,050 events for Victoria, with over half hosted in regional Victoria, boosting local jobs and economies, and showcasing our iconic regions.
I’d like to congratulate Equestrian Victoria on delivering the Championships, sanctioned by the Fédération Equestrian Internationale and Equestrian Australia.
While you are here, I encourage you to explore the many attractions in the precinct and beyond, including the Werribee Open Range Zoo and State Rose Garden.
Werribee is just a short commute to Melbourne’s CBD, so I’d encourage you to also explore and enjoy the many attractions that our city has to offer including world class tourist attractions and some amazing food and wine.
Best of luck to all our participants and I hope competitors and spectators enjoy a fabulous event.
I wish you all the best for your time here in Melbourne.

MI3DE SINCE 1957 EVENTING EXCELLENCE
The Three Day Event, or Concours Complet as it is known in French, was originally a military event, drawing on the requirements for a top class Officer’s charger – steadiness on parade, the ability to cross the countryside fast in battle and be fit and tough enough to continue with duties after a strenuous day. The Olympic eventing competition was originally open only to male military officers in active duty, mounted only on military charges.
Founded in 1957, the Melbourne International 3 Day Event was established shortly after the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, allowing Australian riders and their horses to prepare for international competition. This proved a worthy decision as Australia has since enjoyed a long and proud history of Olympic success in Eventing.
The 1956 Olympic Games (when Equestrian competitions were held in Stockholm) was the first Games where Australia fielded an equestrian team.
Ahead of its current home in Werribee Park, the event was first held during Royal Melbourne Show with dressage run on Flemington Racecourse, cross country at Oaklands Hunt Club and show jumping in the main Show Arena. Since its inception it has welcomed riders, officials and spectators from across the world. Some of Australia’s most successful equestrian talent, including gold, silver and bronze medallists, World Equestrian Games and FEI World Cup team members have used the event as a training and qualification ground ahead of pursuing their equestrian dreams internationally.
Equestrian is the only Olympic sport where both men and women compete on equal terms and animals are involved. The MI3DE Honour Board of 3 Star Champions features many Australian Olympic heroes from past and present.

MESSAGE FROM THE CROSS COUNTRY COURSE DESIGNER EWAN KELLETT
Since 1997 when the MI3DE moved from its date in November to the King’s Birthday weekend in June I have never seen the paddocks looking as parched as they do this year. The effects of the prolonged dry spell in South Eastern Australia can certainly been seen at Werribee this year. Despite this, the ground overall feels good and with some well-timed use of the agri-vator and the aera-vator the going should be as good as possible for the horses to gallop around the surrounds of Werribee Park.
While this year’s track has quite a similar feel to 2024, some changes to the balance and flow of the course will be evident as the course progresses. The “Good Luck from Rider Video” and the “Eventing Victoria Oxer” are both big, bold fences to get both horse and rider thinking positively and helping to get both horse and rider into a good jumping rhythm from the outset and remain in place from 2024. Similarly, the “Off the Track Mound” is unchanged and while it is quite a straightforward roll top at the top of the mound, it must be respected as it gives a taste of the atmosphere that will be encountered around much of the rest of the course.
The first combination on course will be found in the main arena at fence 4AB. Two very large brush roll tops will present an early test of line, straightness and concentration and aims to provide some early confidence. Coming soon afterwards is the Lemieux Mound at 5AB. The log cabin with a significant drop behind has been reinstated from last year, but is now followed by a single, but very skinny brush stump on a slight right curve. This stump will come up very quickly given the runaway landing after the cabin and is not to be underestimated. A slower alternative is provided for those who might not quite get the jump in over A they hoped for or for those still looking for confidence early on.
Even though the early part of the course is less intense than previously with 2 less jumping efforts, the long gallop around the polo fields with only the large K Road Spread and visually imposing IRT Trakehner to jump will give a good opportunity to help clear the head before all the hustle and bustle of the Bates Billabong. It is also a good opportunity to pick up some time that may have been lost early on.
This year the first approach to the Bates Billabong is jumping away from the road back towards the crowd. A set of frangible rails just set back from the run down to the water will demand care and attention and also help set up control after the long gallop before the very skinny fish in the water and then the equally skinny flowerbox back on dry land, with the crowd immediately behind. The gallop around the polo field will be nothing more than a memory as the course really develops with questions coming consistently from now on. A loop with only the Randlab Giants Table will bring them straight back to the Bates Billabong for the second time. The jump back into the water over the imposing hanging log remains from previous years but is this time followed by a large brush corner and angled brush complex through the trees. Positive riding and maintaining your line will be required to complete this complex successfully. This combination of fences will test which athletes are really working harmoniously together by this stage of the course.
The Animi Ditch Rail has had a makeover from previously, and now features a set of angled rails over the ditch followed by a shallow curving line over an angled palisade. While athletes will want to make the most of the gallop across the civinex paddock, they will have to maintain enough control not to be caught off guard in the middle of the open field.
Another good gallop follows which brings athletes into the hugely popular camel paddock, just taking in the zoo corner spread before heading to the Yulong Stud Quarry, located just at the back of the Peppermint Grove water complex. The large drop is followed by a lefthand curve to 2 angled houses. Being able to maintain focus in this very busy and potentially distracting part of the course will be as important as bravery and accuracy to successfully negotiate this complex.
A significant change to the 2025 track sees the course go to the zoo view table which is a maximum sized frangible table towards the back of the camel paddock before heading straight into the beautifully manicured lawns and gardens of the of the Werribee Park Historic Mansion. This visually spectacular area is a great place to watch plenty of cross-country action with the backdrop of a stately home. The Wyndham City Main Lawn provides the perfect entry to this area over the large wagons beautifully dressed by the local Werribee South farmers.
Equally impressive is the Equestrian Australia Love Seat dressed in succulents just off the main lawn. The love seat is the oldest fence out on course, with it first making an appearance on the Melbourne cross country course in the late 1980’s. A complete makeover approximately 15 years ago has helped ensure its safe useful life as great as it has been.
Returning to the front Lawn for the Horseland Mansion, which is this year the two tractors heavily angled with a narrow direct line linking them. This complex will provide a great photo opportunity over this impressive combination of fences with the Chirnside’s mansion immediately in the background.
Leaving the historic mansion gardens, next is the beautiful and impressive Pyde’s EasiFeed Rose Garden. This year only the second mound will be in use and the complex maintains many similar features from 2024. A set of frangible rails jumping off the mound followed by 2 large open corners at the bottom. This series of fences will demand respect and good riding at this stage of the course where fitness for both horse and rider starts to show.
The Garden Gate always demands respect and helps to slow those riders in a hurry trying and make up lost time in the Mansion and Rose Gardens before coming back to the camel paddock. Unlike previous years, upon returning to the camel paddock, the 4* class make a left turn back to the 4CYTE Hollows. It has been a long time since this complex has come up this late in the course and will certainly ensure that athletes have left enough in the tank to successfully negotiate this complex. The suspended brush rail will require a determined ride with the ground falling away steeply behind it. The angled line over the ditch at the bottom of the hollows may surprise any horses who are a little suspicious of holes in the ground. Maintaining accuracy will be the key to negotiating the final brush rail beyond the ditch. The Hollows Roll should hopefully complete what I hope is a fun ride through this part of the course.
The approach to the Peppermint Grove Water complex has also changed, partly to reduce the effects of the low winter sun in the afternoon. The Frangible palisade at the top of the rise followed by the two triple brushes either side of the water will demand respect at this late stage of the course. Boldness, tempered with care and accuracy will be required to complete this complex successfully.
The large Kennards Oxers will demand care and respect at the end of the course when the seconds are ticking away in sight of the finish before making their way to the well-dressed keyhole at the “Off the Track finale” bringing to an end what has hopefully been a safe and successful round for both horse and rider around the parks and gardens of the historic Werribee Park precinct.
Special thanks to the wonderful course building team of Mick, Will, Greg, Matt, Shaun, Andrea, Danielle and Wayne plus all the other dedicated individuals who year after year work tirelessly to put together this beautiful cross-country course for everyone to enjoy.
I would like to wish everyone a terrific weekend enjoying our wonderful sport, in whatever capacity it is that you have come to join us at the 2025 Melbourne International 3 Day Event. Most importantly, I would like to wish all athletes at all levels (both equine and human) safe and successful rounds.
Good Luck Cheers Ewan

OFF THE TRACK
Saturday 7 June,
Paris Olympics Silver Medallist - Chris will be working with three Off The Track Thoroughbreds, both on the flat and over fences. He’ll take us through the process of training a retired racehorse to develop into a promising eventer.
Racing Victoria Acknowledged Rehomer Program launched
Racing Victoria (RV) has introduction a new Acknowledged Rehomer Program to its suite of post-racing initiatives to help improve the visibility of thoroughbreds transitioning to new post-racing careers.
This program will incentivise those rehoming more than two Off The Track thoroughbreds a year to become an Acknowledged Rehomer, by providing a one-off $150 reporting payment for each thoroughbred reported to RV via the Off The Track Community.
The Acknowledged Rehomer Program differs from the Acknowledged Retrainer Program in two important ways:
• An Acknowledged Rehomer does not have to perform any ridden assessment or retraining under saddle before rehoming; and
• An Acknowledged Rehomer does not have to keep the thoroughbred in the care of their home, for example, this means they can rehome on behalf of owners and licensed trainers.
For more information, eligibility criteria and how to apply to become an Acknowledged Rehomer, please use the above QR code to visit the Off The Track Community or contact RV via offthetrack@racingvictoria.net.au
