Are you feeling it, too? Do you feel like things will never ever be the same? Between the COVID-19 situation and the civil unrest throughout our country, do you feel uncomfortable?

If I may be so bold, I'd like to directly address each of those questions: Do you feel like things will never ever be the same?

There is no question that we are living in a time that most of us have never seen the likes of. We're wearing masks just to go in public; we can't meet our friends at a bar and chill out just to take the edge off — and if we do, we know that everyone around us is feeling just as anxious as we are just by being in public and taking the chance of coming down with COVID-19 or taking it home to our families. And if that's not enough, some people are taking the law into their own hands and using violence to try to solve civil tension. There are curfews being enforced and we're experiencing restrictions we Americans are not accustomed to. It's just no fun going out any more — so we're staying home WAY more and that's taking a toll on us, too.

Do you feel uncomfortable?

At some time or another we've all pushed ourselves off that proverbial ledge to get the nerve to try something new or push through something that makes us feel uncomfortable. That feeling is our brain's way of telling us we either need to push through or get the hell out — "fight or flight." In much the same way, we're relying on our inner voice to tell us how to get through this. Sure, we're soaking in what the media wants us to see, but we're also finding ourselves turning inward more than ever before.

Here's food for thought: What if "things never ever being the same" and "feeling uncomfortable" caused real change — for the better — for everyone? What if we then became "comfortable" with things "never ever being the same?"

LETTER FROM THE MAYOR November 3rd, Election Day, is just around the corner and it’s just one more thing , on a growing list of things, that are going to be different this year due to the Coronavirus pandemic. But this might just be an update well worth keeping! Let’s check out some of the key new developments.

First, there have been lots of headlines about absentee ballots. There has been lots of mis-information and what seems like debate. The key thing to know is that North Carolina has offered the absentee ballot process for many years and anyone wishing to cast their vote using it can do so reliably. Also, the US Postal Service remains committed to making sure ballots get delivered, with priority, to voters and election offices. My wife and I have both used it at times when we know that due to work, school or illness we won’t be able to vote in person. Also, many senior citizens, overseas members of the military, missionaries and students rely on this method of voting by mail each year in our state.

It has worked, it continues to work, and this year it is getting even better.

To start with, the process previously had a somewhat confusing paper form that you needed to complete and mail in to request your ballot. They just simplified that form and it is now available on the NC State Board of Elections website (www.ncsbe.gov). Additionally, starting in early September, you can use their new online portal to request your ballot instantly! You can also use this same form/portal to request a ballot for a relative if you are a spouse, parent, grandparent, mother/father-in-law, brother, sister, child, stepchild, grandchild, stepparent or son/daughter-in-law. The form also has an extremely easy to use instruction sheet that should answer just about any question you have about the process.

Then you receive your ballot in the mail. You have as much time as you would like up until Election Day to complete and postmark your ballot, though getting it back in the mail ASAP is recommended. Having the physical ballot at home is also handy as you can do your research on all the candidates before making your choices. When you are ready to vote, you need one witness who should be there while you complete your ballot, but should not watch you closely enough to see

how you vote. Then you and your witness sign the ballot return envelope and mail it back or drop it off at your county board of elections.

Another big improvement this year is that there will be a correction period for ballots. As your local board of elections receives these ballots, they will check over the certification portion and witness fields and if there are any irregularities, you’ll have the chance to correct them. This will help ensure that your ballot gets counted even if you misunderstood the instructions. Returning your ballot early means there will be more time to get any necessary details fixed, if needed. And lastly, as always, requesting an absentee ballot doesn’t prevent you from voting in person if you change your mind prior to mailing in your ballot.

My family has already requested our ballots just in case and we’re asking you to join us and request yours, too.

WHAT DO YOUR NAILS SAY ABOUT YOUR HEALTH? a guide to what your colorful toenails may be trying to tell you

BLACK: If you recently stubbed your toe, dropped something heavy on your foot, or are wearing tight shoes, any of these could be the reason your nail turned black. It could also be a sign of a fungal infection or Melanoma — an aggressive skin cancer.

BROWN: Yellowy-brown toenails can be caused by micro-trauma or be a sign of a fungal infection, particularly if the nails are also flaky or crumbly.

YELLOW: The fungus that turns nails yellow can also cause nails to thicken, which can make at-home treatment difficult. Yellow nails that don’t respond to treatment may be a sign of an underlying medical issue.

GREEN: Green toenails, known as chloronychia or Green Nail Syndrome, are generally caused by a bacterial infection and occur most often in people whose feet are frequently submerged in water.

BLUE: The most likely culprit is a harmless mole under the nail — it could be a blue nevus, a type of mole. On the other hand, an overall blue tinge to toenails and fingernails could be a signal that your body isn’t getting enough oxygen.

WHITE: White nails could be a sign of a fungal infection called white superficial onychomycosis. White patches could also be from an injury that caused the nail to separate from the nail bed. But if your whole nail is pale white and appears otherwise healthy, it could be a sign of underlying disease.

STRIPES: A pattern of red and white vertical stripes, accompanied by v-shaped nicks in the growing edge of the nail, is a sign of Darier disease. If your nails are pale with just a horizontal pink stripe at the tip you may have “Terry’s nails.”

WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN VISITING YOUR DENTIST'S OFFICE During these challenging times, even a visit to the dentist can make us uneasy. Knowing what to expect can help.

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed a lot of aspects of daily life, including regular visits to the dentist. Now that the country is open for business again, most dental practices are seeing patients. To help protect patients and staff alike, the American Dental Association (ADA) has developed science-based guidance for dentists on extra steps they can take, in addition to the infection control procedures they’ve always followed. With this guidance in mind, here’s what you can expect at your next appointment: Before Your Appointment Just before your appointment, your dentist's office may call to ask you some questions about your current health. They may also ask you to limit the number of people you bring with you to your appointment.

At Your Appointment Be sure to bring a mask to your appointment to wear as required. When you arrive, you may be asked to wait outside until they’re ready for you to reduce the number of people in the office and reduce the amount of time you’re close to others. When you enter the office, you may have your temperature taken. Inside the office, you may notice that items people often touch in the waiting room — like toys or magazines — have been removed. The office may have hand sanitizer available for you to use and staff may wipe down items you touch, such as pens, clipboards or furniture.

When you’re in the dental chair, you may notice some things look different from the last time you were there. The dentist may have covered the computer keyboard with a disposable cover for easy cleaning between patients, for example. Your dentist may also be using different protective equipment than used at previous appointments, such as masks, face shields, gowns or goggles. These additional precautions protect both you and the staff.

If you start feeling ill with the symptoms of COVID-19 within 14 days of your appointment, call the dental office. You may have already been carrying the virus at the time of your appointment, so anyone who came into contact with you could be at risk for getting sick too.

Regular dental visits are an essential part of your oral hygiene routine and are important for your overall heath. Be sure to reschedule your dental checkups now that your favorite dental office is open.

LET'S TALK ABOUT NEW CONSTRUCTION! You’re ready to buy a house and you want something totally new that has never been lived in. Hey, I’m with ya!

Though I love a Craftsman bungalow, there’s nothing like the smell & feel of a brand new house. There are some things to look out for, though, so if you are going to buy new, make sure you pay attention and ASK QUESTIONS.

COVENANTS: If the community has an HOA, these are the rules & restrictions you will have to live by. Ask about these at each community you are interested in, and if you find them too restrictive then keep looking.

WARRANTIES: There should be a minimum 10-year structural warranty and 1-year system warranty. Find out what, exactly, is covered.

APPLIANCES: Most will provide stove and microwave, but not refrigerator. Ask your realtor to negotiate for appliances you want.

FLOORING: Most “spec” builders will use lower quality carpet and flooring. Ask your agent to negotiate for better quality flooring, if that's important to you.

YOUR FUTURE HOME: City building code inspectors will inspect each structure before they allow builders to go to the next stage. Call the city office and find out when the inspector will be at the house you are buying and plan to meet them there at each stage. They will show you (and explain) every aspect of your new home’s structure, and what needs done in order to pass that day’s inspection. You want to know your new house from the bottom up!

BEFORE CLOSING do your walk-through slowly and methodically, and take pictures, as there are always items that will need attention. Once you close, you lose your recourse, so make sure you are completely satisfied with your new home before you sign on the dotted line!

I was diagnosed five years ago with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia, also referred to as CLL. I was extremely grateful that my original prognosis was very positive and that to this point, my check-ups continue to be encouraging. Although there is not a cure for CLL, I have been fortunate to not require treatment yet. After my diagnosis, a very close family friend and my niece’s husband were both diagnosed with lymphoma. Two years ago, my wife's aunt was successfully treated for Multiple Myeloma with a stem cell transplant.

Just when you thought that was enough, my sister-inlaw's life partner was diagnosed with lymphoma and just last year my wife's cousin was diagnosed with SLL, yet another blood cancer. As you can see, blood cancers have had a significant impact in my life and in many of the lives of our close family and friends. I feel like I have an opportunity to help by supporting this incredible organization!

The Touloupas dental team and friends are participating in the Triad Light the Night to support the LLS in the fight against blood cancers. a sign of the times THE ALLIANCE CONTINUES HELPING CLIENTS DURING COVID -19 PANDEMIC As COVID-19 methodically led to many things being restricted or even closed, The Alliance was forced to adapt and evolve in terms of how it attracted new people to its business.

The pandemic reached a point where holding HotSpot meetings in cities all over the country was no longer possible.

Thankfully, agents quickly found that Zoom was a great tool to continue meeting with clients and potential agents when doing so in person just wasn't possible.

These virtual “Show The Plan” opportunity meetings allowed The Alliance to continue helping others find out about the company and what it does all over the United States. Agents were able to spread the message to interested people, who didn’t even have to leave their homes to find out what the company does.

Several times each week agents took turns hosting virtual meetings on different days and times in an effort to continue reaching potential new agents to work with The Alliance. On any given day, you could hear from top leaders like The Alliance president and CEO Andy Albright. This allowed agents and potential recruits the chance to hear from leaders of The Alliance — when they might not otherwise be able to actually see these leaders speak.

“We were at a point where we couldn’t do in-person meetings the way we had before this happened,” Albright explains. “We quickly decided this was what we were going to do and our team ran with it. It was a big hit, and people we hadn't known before tuned in. We realized this was a great way to easily reach people.”

These virtual “STP” meetings were not drastically different than in-person except that audience members were not in the same room. This newfound manner of showing others The Alliance opportunity allowed the company to welcome thousands into its house, together safely and, more importantly, legally!

Potential agents that might have been hesitant to attend a meeting in person had fewer objections than before.

You don’t have to dress up because nobody has to see you.

You don’t have to drive to attend the meeting. You don’t have to touch objects or people. All of those objections were eliminated.

Outside of virtual meetings, The Alliance, fortunately, was deemed as an essential service to people and continued protecting clients and their families throughout this pandemic. It was not business-as-usual, but The Alliance made adjustments to what has become the new “normal” for all of us.

This included fewer in-home appointments, but it didn’t mean fewer people covered. Carriers changed rules for issuing policies. Sales normally made in the home were now made over the phone and via video chats. Some clients wanted to meet in person, but not inside their homes.

To honor this request, agents set up at a table outside the home to meet with the clients.

Whatever it takes, The Alliance is meeting the needs of clients.

It is a prime example of what can happen when you make the most out of a tough situation.

“We were happy to be deemed essential and that really freed us up to get more creative with our clients,” Albright said. “It really brought our team together even more than before because we all had questions we hadn’t dealt with before in terms of what we could do for clients.

We made the most of the situation our country was faced with. I am proud of our agents, to say the least.”

Doing this allows The Alliance to reach an audience no matter where they are in the country. It helps reach people that previously might not have attended a meeting in person.

With many people being out of work, the last six months also afforded the company the opportunity to offer people work at a time when they need a way to continue making a living.

Countless agents saw their sales numbers skyrocket. The Alliance proved to people that what they do matters, and people realized they needed the very products it offers.

Some agents were afraid of evolving when COVID-19 hit, but quickly found support from other agents to assure them they could adapt and thrive.

The Alliance was important and essential before this pandemic, but that realization is made even clearer now.

THE RAUHUTS: BUILDERS OF A BIGGER, BETTER BURLINGTON Practically everyone in Burlington has traveled along Rauhut Street, or at least knows where it is, but very few know for whom it is named: Charles Frederick Rauhut, Sr. He was born near Pleschen, Prussia (now Pleszew, Poland) on March 21, 1826 and came to the United States in 1849, reportedly to avoid being drafted into the Prussian army. He had been trained as a cabinet maker and began doing woodwork and building furniture for wealthy German families in New York City for the next several years.

Shortly after marrying Louisa Eliza Ritz, a native of Saxony, in 1854, Charles and his new wife moved to Anderson, South Carolina, where he found work as a carpenter on the Cincinnati, Charleston & Louisville Railroad, doing finishing work on the interiors of the passenger cars. When South Carolina seceded from the Union at the end of 1860, Charles, Eliza, and their two young children, relocated to Company Shops, where Charles found work building and repairing freight cars for the North Carolina Railroad. Since the railroad only provided housing for its highranking employees, the Rauhut family first lived in two sidetracked box cars and then moved into a tiny log cabin on what is now East Morehead Street.

the Civil War and during the hard times which followed. He used some of this money to buy a large tract of land northwest of Company Shops, and at what is now the corner of Fisher and Rauhut streets he built a large, two-story brick house—reportedly the first private brick home constructed in town. There he died on July 16, 1904, at the age of 78.

Charles Frederick Rauhut, Jr., who was called “Charlie,” was born on July 13, 1857 and married a local girl, Julia Elizabeth “Lizzie” Holt, a descendant of Michael Holt I, on November 16, 1882. Charlie had been trained as a carpenter, and also worked for the North Carolina Railroad, but when the railroad began slowly winding down operations at Company Shops, he decided to become a merchant. He leased a piece of property on what is now East Front Street, and in either late 1883 or early 1884 erected a two-story frame building on it. The first floor housed a general store and he and his family lived on the second floor.

When that building was destroyed by fire in the early morning hours of October 20, 1884, Charlie quickly rebuilt on the same site. Later, in August 1887, he had a two-story brick building erected at the corner of Spring and East Front streets, which is still standing. It has housed dozens of Burlington businesses over the last 133 years and is now home to a coffee shop. In addition, Charlie had a building constructed on

Spring Street that housed Sing Lee’s Laundry for many years. In 1914, he also had new two-story building constructed on the site of the original Rauhut store (which has since been demolished).

Charlie died June 29, 1925.

Hilary Edwin Rauhut, born December 4, 1890, was Charlie and Julia’s only surviving son and the last of the male Rauhut line. Like his father, Hilary was a businessman. He ran a successful bicycle and battery store out of the family building at the corner of Spring and East Front streets and dabbled in the restaurant business. He had the Dairy Lunch building constructed on Spring Street and ran a fast food establishment between Elon and Gibsonville.

But Hilary preferred the arts to commercial endeavors. After graduating from Elon College with a degree in art, he gave private lessons. He was also an accomplished musician.

But he was best known as a dog lover and breeder of the best hunting dogs in the county.

On September 6, 1919, Hilary married Sadie Leigh May, the youngest daughter of locomotive engineer Henderson R. May. They had one daughter, Elizabeth “Betsy” Rauhut.

Hilary died on March 17, 1951, thus preventing the Rauhut name from being passed on to future generations. But he has many descendants living today. Additionally, the 1887 Rauhut building at the corner of Spring and East Front streets, and the street named after Charles Frederick Rauhut, Sr., ensures that the name of the family that helped build a bigger, better Burlington will long endure.

In October 1892 he was at the railroad station to greet the 176 students when they arrived to attend the new college. The school prospered despite the activities of some detractors: a typhoid epidemic that cost fifteen lives and closed the school in 1899, and a fire that destroyed the major dormitory in 1904.

In addition to his duties at the college, McIver held offices in many professional organizations. He was president of the Southern Education Association and of the Normal School Department of the National Education Association, a trustee and member of the executive committee of the board of trustees of The University of North Carolina, and secretary and district director of the Southern Education Board. He also was considered as a candidate for governor of North Carolina and for president of The University of North Carolina but refused to allow his name to be submitted, choosing to remain at his post in Greensboro.

When a surface is painted with chalkboard paint, you can write on it freely with chalk, wash and repeat. It can be used to paint kids rooms so they can draw on walls to spark creativity.

Chalk paint is used to paint furniture and surfaces without using primer and/or lengthy prep work.

The paint adheres to glossy surfaces, eliminating the need for primer and oil-based paint altogether. Chalk paint is easy to use, easy to make, and very durable , according to our paint expert, Paul Carpenter.

Carpenter says, making your own chalk paint can save you lots of money on your remodel project.

Name brand chalk paint is expensive and the colors are very limited. By

making your own, you can buy the cheapest paint available, plus choose any color you like.

Here are some more tips from Carpenter for your chalk paint home projects: Beware of Biters!

If you are painting baby furniture, be sure to use a safe sealer that will not harm children if they chew on the furniture.

Tape Test It! If you are trying to decide whether a piece of furniture needs sanding prior to painting; take a piece of blue painter's tape and apply it to the surface. If paint comes off with the tape, you must sand the furniture before re-finishing with any type of paint.

Weathered Out Use an exterior sealer on outdoor furniture instead of waxing.

Small Batches Carpenter suggests making one quart at a time because the paint does not store for long periods. Try to use your chalk paint within 30 days.

Will Clog Do not use chalk paint in your paint sprayer. The sand in the plaster is sure to clog your nozzles.

CARPENTER'S STEP-BY-STEP TO MAKING YOUR OWN CHALK PAINT IS SIMPLE: Step 1 Make sure your surface is dry and clean. Sanding is like insurance to help you get better coverage, but not at all necessary. That's the benefit of chalk paint, to save time and money.

Step 2 Add 6 tablespoons of pottery plaster to Âź cup cold water to make a paste.

Step 3 Add the paste mixture to 1 quart of flat latex paint.

Step 4 Stir paint with plaster until it is the consistency of pancake batter; nice and velvety.

Some paints are thicker than others, so adding small amounts of water or plaster to achieve the right consistency is sometimes necessary.

Step 5 Using a nylon polyester brush made for latex paint; brush on liberally, covering all areas with no regard for brush strokes.

Step 6 For a distressed look once dry, use 80 grit sandpaper to sand the entire surface applying more pressure in certain areas to reveal the under paint. After distressing, use 150 or 220 grit fine sandpaper on the entire surface.

If you want a clean, all over paint look, skip the distressing process and proceed directly to the fine sanding.

Step 7 Brush away all dust from sanding and apply paste wax with a cloth in small sections, rubbing into the surface. Buff with a lint free cloth for a final finish.

QUEEN Established in November of 2019, CustomsxTrii is both a touching and impressive homage to Owner Katrina Mitchell's father, who passed away in March of 2020.

In life, Shurndale Kemp was a force to be reckoned with. Though Katrina's childhood relationship with him was not what one might call "storybook," her relationship with him beginning in 2005 was nothing short of an epic father/daughter lovefest.

Born in Pittsburgh PA and subsequently moved to New York (as a teen), Shurndale endured years of adversity. In his later years, he learned to turn adversity into motivation and he passed this perserverence on to Katrina. She attributes her strong work ethic and her drive to achieve to her father.

"Most people don't have 'storybook' family lives, even though it might look like it from the outside," says Katrina.

"Quality time is what matters and I will forever be grateful for those wonderful, inspiring 14 years with my father."

29-year-old Katrina Mitchell was born in Mt. Kisco NY and grew up right here in Burlington NC. She attended Walter M. Williams High School, graduating in 2009, and went on to graduate from Winston-Salem State University with degrees in business administration and justice studies. Raised by her mother and maternal grandparents, Katrina grew up with an appreciation for the importance of families sticking together and an understanding of what it means to sacrifice for your children. She credits her mother for instilling a belief in God. In November of 2019, when she started her business, CustomsxTrii (pronounced Customs by Trii), her father Shurndale was looking on and coaching her, as he always did. As her business began to flourish, she later took pride in being able to do for him (a Father's Day trip in 2019, for one).

"I know he is watching from above and is proud of me and my drive to be successful," she says. "It's because of him that I'm as strong as I am. My father was a 'hustler' in the best sense of the word. When he made up his mind about something, he was going to make it happen."

She goes on to say that her father never met a stranger.

When Shurndale Kemp entered a room, you knew he had arrived. He lived most of his life in The Bronx in New York City and he lived his life in a big way and in his own way. It was always important to him to keep upping his game — and he passed that mindset on to Katrina. To this day she gets up every day and thinks about what she can do to live a fuller, better life — trying to "best" herself, in essence.

Operating within her motto, "Mind of a Hustler, Heart of a Queen," she likes to think of herself as the female version of her father.

CHOCOLATE PUMPKIN SPIDER CUPCAKES

INGREDIENTS •1 cup oat flour •1 cup cacao powder • 2/3 cup coconut sugar • 2 tsp baking powder • 1/2 tsp salt • 2 eggs • 6 ounces unsweetened chocolate • 1 cup milk • 3/4 cup pumpkin puree • 1 tsp madagascar vanilla ICING • 1/2 cup pumpkin puree • 1/2 cup Greek yogurt • 2 tbsp cornstarch • 2 tbsp coconut sugar • 2 tsp pumpkin pie spice • Orange food color paste

DIRECTIONS 1. Mix all the icing ingredients together until you have a smooth like consistency. Add food coloring until you have the desired orange color.

2. Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

3. Melt unsweetened chocolate in microwave on 50% power.

4. In a large bowl, combine oat flour, cacao powder, coconut sugar, baking powder and salt.

Whisk until no clumps remain.

5. In a small bowl, combine pumpkin, milk, eggs and vanilla. Mix until all ingredients are combined.

6. Add wet ingredients to the dry ingredients with the melted chocolate. Stir to combine.

7. Fill cupcake liners 3/4 full.

Do not over-fill.

8. Bake for 25-30 minutes at 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

9. Remove from the oven and cool before decorating.

10. Place cupcakes in decorator black papers.

11. Pipe icing in swirl motion and top with plastic spiders.

12. Serve and enjoy!

ARTICHOKE & WHITE BEAN SALAD

 

INGREDIENTS 2 15-ounce cans white beans, rinsed and drained 1 14-ounce jar artichoke hearts (packed in water, not oil), drained and chopped 1 celery stalk, finely diced 1 red bell pepper, seeded and diced 3 /4 cup chopped black olives 4 green onions, sliced 1 /4 tsp. red pepper flakes 1 /2 tsp. ground fennel seeds 2 Tbsp. chopped fresh basil 1 /4 cup chopped fresh parsley 2 Tbsp. lemon juice 1 /4 cup red wine vinegar 1 tsp. Dijon mustard 1 /2 tsp. sea salt 1 /4 tsp. black pepper

DIRECTIONS 1. Place the beans and vegetables into a large mixing bowl.

2. Add the dry seasonings and fresh herbs and stir to combine.

3. In another bowl, mix together the lemon juice, vinegar, and Dijon. Add this mixture to the beans and vegetables and stir to combine.

4. Add salt and pepper, more or less to taste.
