Director’s Message: Celebrating Our Friends of the Libraries
Prince William Public Libraries is proud to celebrate its Friends of the Libraries groups during National Friends of the Libraries Week, taking place October 19–25, 2025. This year marks the 20th annual celebration of this nationwide event.
PWPL is supported by seven Friends groups that serve 12 libraries across Prince William County and the City of Manassas. The first Friends group helped establish Prince William Public Libraries in 1952, and the newest Friends group–the Friends of Manassas City Library–was established in 2021. Throughout the year, the Friends provide support by funding a variety of programs and services. From craft supplies and refreshments for book clubs and Teen Advisory Groups to sponsoring special events, their contributions help enhance library programs. Their used book sales are a favorite in the community, and they continually advocate for library support and encourage new members to get involved. This past summer, they generously provided Friends of the
Library Vouchers to Summer Reading participants who reached the halfway reading goal to redeem for a free book at their book sales.
With more than 100 active members, the Friends play a key role in supporting PWPL. In FY 2025, their efforts raised over $86,000 in support of the library’s mission to bring people, information, and ideas together in a welcoming, inclusive environment.
Friends of the Library groups are the heart behind so much of what we do. Their dedication makes a lasting impact—whether through funding programs, organizing book sales, or simply sharing their love of libraries with the community. We’re honored to celebrate and thank them this week and every week.

Game On: PWPL Launches New “Level
Up Your Reading” Program
Are you ready to take your reading to the next level? Prince William Public Libraries invites students in grades K–12 to “Level Up Your Reading,” a gamified reading challenge to track minutes, earn prizes, and work your way toward a grand prize drawing!
Here’s how it works: sign up for Level Up Your Reading online at pwcva.gov/ library, on the Beanstack Tracker app, or by stopping by any Prince William Public Library to pick up the Level 1: The Beginning bookmark. You can track your progress on the bookmark or the app.
• Each box = 20 minutes of reading
• 400 minutes = 1 level
• 10 levels total
You’ll start at Level 1: The Beginning and make your way through exciting worlds like Rainbow Ridge, Puzzle Peak, and Mystery Maze before reaching the ultimate Level 10: Champion’s Circle. Each level you complete earns you a prize. Visit your local library to check
in and LEVEL UP! Finish all 10 levels for a chance to win big in our grand prize drawing.
Whether you’re reading books, audiobooks, or graphic novels–every minute counts. Level Up Your Reading is a continuation of the popular 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program. The goal is to encourage students to read more and enjoy the journey. Ready to play? GAME ON!

One Card, Endless Possibilities: Celebrate Library Card Sign-up Month this September
This September, celebrate Library Card Signup Month at Prince William Public Libraries and discover how a single card can open the door to endless possibilities.
With a library card, you can do so much more than check out books. From free programs and job resources to homework help, streaming media, and special reading challenges, libraries connect communities to information, inspiration, and each other.
This year's theme, "One Card, Endless Possibilities," is a reminder that libraries are for everyone—no matter your age, background, or goals. Whether you're diving into a new hobby, searching for your next great read, brushing up on tech skills, or helping your child succeed in school, it all starts with a library card.
At PWPL, you'll find:
• Makerspaces at Bull Run and Central Libraries. These independent workspaces inside the library offer a range of machines, tools, and technology to explore, build, collaborate, and create.
• Specialized services at MAGIC and RELIC. The Management and Government Information Center at Chinn Park Library provides unique support for local businesses and nonprofits, and RELIC at Central Library is a special collection devoted to genealogy and local history with a focus on Virginia and Prince William County.
• Programs and events for all ages—from story times and book clubs to crafts and tech help. Pick up a copy of Explore or visit our Online Events Calendar to see upcoming programs.
Getting a library card is free, easy, and empowering. For students, it's a key to academic success. For
adults, it's a gateway to lifelong learning. For everyone, it's a smart way to stay connected to your community.
PWPL Receives Grants to Support Language Learning
Prince William Public Libraries recently received two grants to assist New Americans (immigrants and refugees) and English language learners in the greater Prince William community. The American Library Association (ALA) and Carnegie Corporation of New York (Carnegie) have awarded PWPL grants of $10,000 and $400,000 to achieve this goal.
PWPL was selected through competitive national calls for proposals. While ALA received 52 proposals and 16 were awarded, Carnegie received over 1,400 proposals and awarded 11. PWPL serves the #10 most diverse community in the U.S. (2020 U.S. Census), which made it a top candidate for the awards. Almost 42% (222,600) of residents speak a language other than English at home, nearly double the national average of 22% (U.S. Census, 2023).
“These initiatives aim to serve over 10,000 learners, improve English proficiency, and reduce access barriers for immigrants and non-English speakers in Prince William County and the City of Manassas,” commented Jennifer Patterson, PWPL director. “PWPL emphasizes long-term sustainability by embedding ESL instruction into regular staff duties and developing local partnerships, ensuring greater community responsive enrichment and access to approachable, adaptive experts.” PWPL will use the ALA grant to launch new bilingual (Spanish–English) programs for children. PWPL will build upon the success of the existing programs and create their bilingual versions. The programs include Story Time and Music and Movement for preschoolers, and Craft and Story Night, Tastes of the Story Book Club, and Game Night for school-aged children.
“The American Library Association is committed to library access for everyone, especially for those who are new to our country. These grants directly contribute to our mission,” said ALA President Cindy Hohl.
The Carnegie grant will enhance English learning resources and programs for adults. PWPL will collaborate with a local university to offer leveled ESL classes, provide free placement tests, and train librarians in TESOL to sustain programming long-term. The grant will also support interpreter services during job-readiness programs and expand access to ESL learning resources, including translated materials, language-learning software, and take-home kits.
“Andrew Carnegie believed libraries were ladders upon which anyone and everyone could rise, and that belief continues to guide us,” said Dame Louise Richardson, president of Carnegie. “At a time when trust in public institutions is fraying, libraries retain public trust. We are delighted to support these grantees as they provide essential programs and community services.”
PWPL has already started to implement these initiatives, and community members can expect to see the new programs in the winter and spring. Read more about the grants at pwcva.gov/library and on PWPL’s social media.
Stop by your local library or visit us at pwcva.gov/library to sign up for your card today. Because with a PWPL library card, the possibilities are truly endless. Prince William Library Foundation

Seed Libraries Are Sprouting at PWPL
Seed Libraries at Central, Chinn Park, Haymarket Gainesville, Manassas City, Montclair, and Potomac Libraries have been busy with gardeners of all levels and ages coming to take vegetable and flower seeds to enhance their gardens. In addition to seeds, libraries host programs and workshops on gardening techniques, creating healthy soil, and having a flourishing home garden. All this is possible thanks to an exemplary collaboration of Garden Club of Montclair, Garden Club of Lake Ridge, Haymarket Town & Country Garden Club, Centennial Garden Club, and the Master Gardener Program of Prince William County.
The Garden Club of Montclair was awarded a ChangeX grant, funded by AWS Northern Virginia Community Fund, to grow a collaboration between these clubs to expand the Seed Libraries at PWPL and support home
vegetable gardening and seed sharing. Since then, the volunteers have been busy gathering, labeling, and cataloging the seeds for distribution to interested community members–over 2,000 seed packets have been distributed. Master Gardeners then support gardeners by teaching them how to successfully grow and harvest vegetables, maintain a pollinator garden, or grow a fruit tree. Some gardeners have already shared their success with us.
"My mom (74) sends her sincere thanks to all who make the Little Free Seeds Program available and possible! She says they are topnotch quality seeds and she’s enjoying the green beans sprouting. We look forward to the harvest!"
The Seed Libraries and gardening programs attract not only library patrons but also other community groups. A local elementary school sought help with activities related to environmental stewardship and found Chinn Park Library’s Seed Library and Children’s
Garden. The school’s Girl Scout Daisy Troop members then visited the garden, learned about plants, pollinators, and the joy of growing something beautiful, and earned their Flower Garden Journey badge.
Visit our Seed Libraries and pollinator gardens this fall and boost your gardening skills during programs with Master Gardeners.

Borrowing, Returns, Holds, and Renewals
Borrow books, Chromebook laptops, DVDs, Launchpad tablets, magazines, and mobile Wi-Fi hotspots for three weeks.
Return your materials to any branch location or book drop. Books are picked up from the book drops once a week. Please allow at least one week for them to be checked in. Place holds on materials through the Online Catalog, in person, or by phone. You can have up to 20 holds at a time.
PWPL introduced automatic renewals beginning July 1, 2024. Automatic renewal removes the need to manage eligible renewals of physical materials in your library account. Items eligible for renewal will be listed in notices three days before their due date and will automatically renew for the full three weeks from the due date. Items will auto-renew up to four times as long as they are still eligible. Read more about automatic renewals at pwcva.gov/library.
Sign up for email or text message reminders or change your email preferences through your online account.
PWPL does not charge fines for late items. Patrons are still responsible for paying fees for lost or damaged items. Please be sure to pay your outstanding fees, as your account is suspended when fees on your account reach $20.00.
