All Together Now!
As summer rolls around, I find myself once again messaging the importance of summer reading for our students to keep up their skills between school years. Research consistently points to the loss students can experience during the summer if reading skills are not exercised consistently over the months away from the classroom. We have plenty of titles, both new and old favorites, to entice readers of all ages to check out and enjoy. Digital and downloadable options enable travelers to take their reading interests with them, in addition to or instead of physical books. The structure of this year’s Summer Reading program at PWPL will include registration and completion prizes as we celebrate the “All Together Now” program’s theme for 2023. Program activities will feature more opportunities than ever to explore our outdoor library spaces. Summer events at our branches will serve our families well with the increase in

STEM and other fun learning activities. We have been welcoming volunteers back to our branches but are happy to have more join our ranks. Some community members may be interested in working with our Friends of the Library groups, and information is available in branches with an affiliated group. Many of our summer program activities are funded by our Friends’ groups, so we greatly appreciate the work they do to support PWPL. Our Library Foundation provides generous funding support through grants and sponsorships for Summer Reading. It is a cornerstone of their support for PWPL, and we are so grateful for their help.
Whatever you are up to this summer, there is a program, a book, or a digital resource at your library to support your summer activities. We hope you will join us on our summer reading adventure!
Grants Help Us Do More For You
This summer, watch for new and updated programs and spaces at your library. PWPL has been awarded several grants that enabled us to enhance our services to you.
New, permanent story trails are coming to Chinn Park and Haymarket Gainesville Libraries, funded through the Sentara Foundation’s Community Grant. STEM programs enhanced with new educational items are being added to our libraries thanks to BAE System’s support.
PWPL Launches an Updated Library Catalog
There’s a new way to explore the library catalog with additional features to help navigate PWPL’s extensive collection of books, DVDs, and digital
New, water-themed STEM kits and books have been purchased with funds from the Water Supply Stakeholder Grant provided by Fairfax Water. Pollinator gardens and composting activities, Repair Cafés, workforce development programs, LEGO® leagues, and a Job Fair are being added to our Events Calendar thanks to two large ChangeX grant programs, Microsoft Community Challenge Fund and AWS InCommunities Northern Virginia Sustainability Fund.
content more easily. The new online catalog is more user-friendly, allows you to quickly find what you need, bookmark items for later viewing, create reading lists and a “bookshelf,” save searches of your favorite topics and authors, and check out and hold digital content right from the catalog with one click. You can access the catalog on any device. Start exploring today at pwcva.gov/library and click “Online Catalog.”
Thank you to Prince William Library Foundation for serving as a conduit to acquire grants and raise funds through community engagement, all of which support programs otherwise unavailable to PWPL. Learn more at princewilliamlibraryfoundation.org

2023 Summer Reading Sponsors: Thank You for Your Support!
Prince William Public Libraries’ Summer Reading program would not be possible without the support of sponsors. Prince William Public Libraries does not use the Prince William County budget for Summer Reading. The program is fully funded by corporate and community sponsorships and grants. This approach not only saves the taxpayers money, it also offers opportunities for building and strengthening community relations.
During the last five years, even during the challenging years of the pandemic, Prince William County and Manassas City local businesses and national corporations with a presence in our area demonstrated above-and-beyond support for this important literacy program. Thank you, Summer Reading sponsors! Without you, we could not continue to offer the quality level of programming our patrons have come to love. Together, we:
• Spark a love of reading.
• Help prevent the “summer slide” in children’s learning.
• Offer free educational and entertaining programs.
• Build long-lasting community partnerships.
• Increase community awareness of local businesses.

Our story times focus on pre-reading skills that all children need to become good readers, and they help parents practice these skills at home.
