Director’s Message

Versatile, Inviting Spaces? Just Look Outside As we look forward to spring and the opportunities to pursue outdoor activities, this Deborah L. Wright is an excellent time to feature all that Prince William Public Libraries (PWPL) is doing to support environmental awareness and education. Read about an award that PWPL recently received from the Urban Libraries Council on page 4. The award highlights our innovative efforts to engage our community in programs and conversations that address the climate crisis. Two of our

libraries–Haymarket Gainesville and Potomac–are now Climate Resilience Hubs, and pollinator gardens have been established at Central, Haymarket Gainesville, and Nokesville Libraries. We offer environmental-related programs and activities for all ages, and we are building a library space for hands-on environmental education with Central Library’s “Central Green” outdoor programming space.

I hope you will enjoy reading more about these activities. Please plan to visit and enjoy the outdoor spaces at our libraries in the coming months.

Enjoy the Outdoors at Central Green PWPL has opened the first of its kind outdoor library space, Central Green. Utilizing the space surrounding Central Library, PWPL now offers a designated area for outdoor programming with focus on hands-on environmental education.

PWPL believes in the importance of public libraries raising awareness about current issues. Central Green encourages the exploration of nature and conservation activities, interaction with nature and the outdoors, allows for experiential learning, spreads the understanding of the importance of conservation, and enhances environmental stewardship.

Patrons can explore a pollinator garden, observe the process of composting, learn about conserving energy while walking and reading along the story walk, and have a safe, welcoming place to read and study outdoors. Central Green will also enhance library programming, like introducing story times and book clubs outside.

“Central Green is a wonderful addition to Central Library where generations of patrons will be able to enjoy the beautiful space, gather, and learn. We are extremely grateful to our donors and all who have made this project come to fruition,” said Central Library Manager Rebecca Lowe.

Prince William Public Libraries Continues Environmental, Sustainability Efforts PWPL first became a member of Virginia Environmental Excellence Program (VEEP) in 2013. PWPL was the first – and is still the only – library system in Virginia with the certification. VEEP encourages and assists facilities and organizations that have strong environmental records to go above and beyond their legal requirements. PWPL is also committed to Prince William County’s Smarter Chemical Program, a strong pollution prevention program that ensures only safe and effective products are used at our sites, and waste is eliminated.

Prince William Public Libraries Named 2021 Top Innovator

“Resilient and Responsible Communities” Exhibits Transformative Impact on Community

The Urban Libraries Council (ULC) announced Prince William Public Libraries (PWPL) as the Top Innovator in the category of “Wellness, Safety, and Sustainability” during the 2021 Innovations Celebration held virtually on January 21.

The annual Innovations Awards recognizes transformative programs that address structural racism, bridge digital divides, provide lifelong education opportunities, meet the needs of under-resourced populations, and improve essential library service delivery from ULC’s member library systems across the U.S. and Canada.

PWPL’s “Resilient and Responsible

Communities” Program was selected by a panel of expert judges from over 250 submissions in 10 categories that showcase creative thinking and imaginative applications of library resources. PWPL won in the category of “Wellness, Safety, and Sustainability,” with award winners being recognized for their level of inventiveness, the outcomes achieved, and the ability for other libraries to adapt and implement their work. Specifically, PWPL’s efforts engage the greater Prince William community in programs and conversations that address the climate crisis.

“Creativity and inventive approaches continue to thrive at ULC member libraries, and this year’s winners are no exception,” said Urban Libraries Council President and CEO Susan Benton. “This year’s submissions highlight our libraries’ remarkable capacity for leadership, commitment, and determination during a time of continued change and stress. We celebrate Prince William Public Libraries for developing a leading-edge program that will transform their library and community, serving as a model for all public libraries in North America.

PWPL offers community conversations and film screenings on environmental issues, and two of its libraries, Haymarket Gainesville and Potomac, are Climate Resilience Hubs where staff provide public education and support during extreme weather events.

PWPL built pollinator gardens and composters at five of its libraries and offer topic-related programs. Library staff teach children about our regional water supply, and PWPL is building

the first-of-its-kind outdoor library space for hands-on environmental education at Central Library.

“Community Building and CommunityResponsive Enrichment are two strategic goals of the library and providing environment-related programs and activities are critical to meeting these objectives,” remarked PWPL Director Deborah Wright. “The impact of this program is bringing more awareness to the community on environmental issues, letting them know about the resources that are available to them through our libraries.”

PWPL will continue to expand its efforts in collaboration with community members who have participated in these programs and activities to continue its commitment to bringing greater awareness to the climate crisis. Learn more about PWPL’s efforts and upcoming programs at pwcva. gov/library.

During National Library Week April 3–9, Connect with Prince William Public Libraries This week, Prince William Public Libraries encourages all community members to visit their library in person or online to explore and access services and programs.

Prince William Public Libraries offers a wide array of programs, services, and resources that are available in person or from the comfort of home, including a state-of-the-art Makerspace, “Books to Go” Book Kits for book clubs, and the Digital Library, offering free access to thousands of online and digital resources.

April 3 – 9, 2022 is National Library Week, a time to highlight the essential role libraries, librarians, and library workers play in transforming lives and strengthening communities. The theme for this year’s National Library Week is “Connect with Your Library,” which promotes the idea that libraries are places to get connected to technology by using Wi-Fi, computers, and other resources.

Libraries also offer opportunities to connect with programs, services, and ideas, in addition to books. Most

importantly, libraries also connect communities to each other.

Libraries of all types continue to go above and beyond to keep their communities connected by expanding resources and embracing inclusion in their programming, resources, and collections. Libraries across the country are making a difference in people’s lives by providing online learning resources like online homework help and Wi-Fi access for students and workers who may lack internet access at home. Prince William Public Libraries is supporting the community with services such as mobile Wi-Fi hotspots that allows patrons the opportunity to get internet access from anywhere and enhanced Wi-Fi that extends out to the parking lots at all 12 of its branches, available 24/7.

If you live, work, own property, or attend school in Prince William County, Manassas, or surrounding jurisdictions, you are eligible for a free library card. To get a card, you must provide identification with your current address. Minors (ages 5–17) are also required to have a parent or legal guardian complete and sign a Library User Agreement Form.

Borrowing, Returns, Holds, and Renewals Borrow books, DVDs, magazines, and Launchpad tablets for three weeks.

Return your materials to any branch location or book drop.

Place holds on materials through the Online Catalog, in person, or by phone. You can have up to 20 holds at a time.

Most items can be renewed four times (unless requested by another patron) online, in person, or by phone.

Sign up for email or text message reminders or change your email preferences through your online account.

As of July 1, 2021, PWPL is no longer charging fines for late items. Patrons are still responsible for paying fees for lost or damaged items.

Please be sure to pay your outstanding fees, as your account is suspended when fees on your account reach $20.00.

Digital Library

The Digital Library provides free access to thousands of online and digital resources including e-books, audiobooks, newspapers, and premium websites with apps like OverDrive’s Libby, hoopla Digital, and LinkedIn Learning.

Everything from automotive help to homework help to premium news access is available on the Digital Library for you to Read, Listen, Watch, or Learn from wherever you are.

Music Instrument Petting Zoo: Dale City Ages 3 and Up Saturday, May 21, 11:00 a.m.–12:30 p.m.

Curious about guitars? Wonder what it feels like to hold a violin? How big is a flute? The experts from Dale City Music will have an assortment of musical instruments for you to touch, hold, and learn about. Tokens will be passed out the day of the program to assign small groups of participants a 10-minute turn in the “petting zoo” area.
