is operational, the new self-check machines will allow payment of outstanding library fees for lost or damaged items, and the Smart kiosks will allow credit card payment for printing and copying services.

Sometime in 2022, we plan to begin offering Chromebook laptops to check out. In addition, the public computers in our children’s areas will have an updated, child-friendly appearance to improve their use of these devices. Also, we anticipate an update to our online catalog system that will provide a more user-friendly, Amazonlike experience for ease in finding library materials.

One way we have addressed digital literacy, prior to COVID, was to offer Girls who Code programming aimed at closing the gender gap in technology, and we anticipate bringing this popular program back in spring 2022. These are just a few plans in the works, and I hope you will see progress in these areas, and others to come, moving forward through 2022.

SAD Lamps Now Available at Prince William Public Libraries

Now that it’s winter, the days are much shorter, and shorter days mean less sunlight and a higher percentage of waking hours spent in darkness. And because many people spend most of these shortened daylight hours indoors, it also means a lack of direct sunlight and Vitamin D. For years, people knew that this change of rhythm could lead to negative thoughts and feelings, a phenomenon which came to be identified as a definable mental health issue that millions suffer from every year—Seasonal Affective Disorder, or “SAD.” One popular treatment is a “SAD lamp,” a specialized light device. Unlike most sources of indoor artificial light, a SAD lamp mimics sunlight, which can trigger the body to release serotonin. While the efficacy of this treatment cannot be guaranteed, it is also virtually risk-free.

PWPL now has SAD lamps available; they can be checked out, renewed, and put on hold. If you or somebody close to you suffers from SAD, thinks you might, or you simply believe a little extra light exposure might do you and your mood some good, search for “SAD Lamp” in the online catalog or check one out from your library.

You have to read for school anyway, right? You may as well win some cool prizes along the way! Register for our new 100 Books Before Graduation program and read books, attend fun programs, and complete get free stuff.

The subject of connectivity, technology access, digital literacy, and the digital divide is a popular one Deborah L. Wright everywhere, and especially in our own county where leaders endeavor to improve access for our residents. Prince William Public Libraries (PWPL) has also been addressing this concern from several angles, and I thought this would be a good time to share what we have been doing and continuing to work on under the umbrella of technology.

We have enhanced and extended the Wi-Fi reach in our parking lots to improve access both during and after operating hours. We recently added new self-checkout machines in all 12 branches to make the checkout process even easier. Our mobile Wi-Fi hotspots, first introduced in early 2020, continue to bring Wi-Fi to people’s homes (and even on their vacations!) We have placed Smart kiosks in our larger branches. WELC OMET OYOU RLIB RARY Welcome to Your Library How to Get a Library Card

If you live, work, own property, or attend school in Prince William County, Manassas, or surrounding jurisdictions, you are eligible for a free library card. To get a card, you must provide identification with your current address. Minors (ages 5–17) are also required to have a parent or legal guardian complete and sign a Library User Agreement Form.

Borrowing, Returns, Holds, and Renewals Borrow books, CDs, DVDs, and magazines for three weeks and Launchpad tablets for one week.

Return your materials to any branch location or book drop.

Place holds on materials through the Online Catalog, in person, or by phone and you can have up to 20 holds at a time.

Most items can be renewed four times (unless requested by another patron) online, in person, or by phone.

Sign up for email or text message reminders or change your email preferences through your online account.

As of July 1, 2021, PWPL is no longer charging fines for late items. Patrons are still responsible for paying fees for lost or damaged items.

Please be sure to pay your outstanding fees, as your account is suspended when fees on your account reach $20.00.

Digital Library

The Digital Library provides free access to thousands of online and digital resources including e-books, audiobooks, newspapers, and premium websites with apps like OverDrive’s Libby, hoopla Digital, and LinkedIn Learning.

Everything from automotive help to homework help to premium news access is available on the Digital Library for you to Read, Listen, Watch, or Learn from wherever you are.

*Talking to the Author Bookmark Contest: Chinn Park Grades K–5 January 3–March 12 Design a bookmark around the theme “Take Care.” The bookmark contest form is available at pwcva.gov/library and at the Information Desk. The bookmarks of the grand prize winner and first place winners (one for each grade, K–5) will be printed and available at the library in early summer. The grand prize winner will also receive an autographed copy of “Take Care” by author Madelyn Rosenberg.

Local historian and author Char McCargo Bah will discuss the historical background of the Contrabands and Freedmen who migrated to Alexandria during the Civil War. This lecture will also demonstrate methods that were used to locate the descendants of the Freedmen and Contrabands who were buried at the Cemetery from 1864 – 1869.
