NOVA Veterans Association – Helping our Vulnerable Veterans Transportation is our number one need and funding has just run out. How you can help: Quick Trip: $100 can provide 1-2 local rides and veteran care coordination (dialysis) Long Haul Sponsorship: $500 provides 1-2 rides (one way) Rollin’ Along Sponsorship: $2500 provides wheelchair accessible van transport for 1-2 wheelchair-bound veterans.

In 2022 NOVA Veterans provided over 1,500 rides for veterans to healthcare appointments at military medical facilities such as Walter Reed, Fort Belvoir, the Washington D.C. Veterans Hospital, VA Community Care Clinics, and other private healthcare facilities. Transportation specifics included wheelchair transport vans as well as regular vehicles. The majority of veterans using this program were disabled and required mobility devices such as canes, walkers, and wheelchairs. Many also had hearing, vision, and cognitive memory challenges.

A TYPICAL NOVA VETERANS STORY: NOVA Veterans has been providing transportation for US Navy Veteran Edwin Acosta to get to his medical appointments and dialysis treatments. This veteran is blind and uses “talk to text” to call us or send emails. He does not have any capable family members close by to assist with daily needs. He is struggling physically, mentally, and emotionally. NOVA Veterans has been coordinating transportation and services for him and his family throughout 2022. We have also provided direct support with utility/mortgage assistance and a grocery gift card.

Un Trim a Tree 2023 Senior Holiday Baskets/Gift Bags You can help a homebound senior have a Happy Holiday by donating a Senior Basket/Gift Bag to Untrim a Tree! Baskets, jumbo sized gift bags or tote bags can be used to assemble the items. This year, we are asking that Senior Baskets/Gift Bags be gender neutral, to make it easier for distribution. However, if you choose to do bags by gender, please label them. Here are some ideas for your Senior Basket/Gift Bag (you can purchase most of these at the dollar store): • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Critical Need – face masks, hand sanitizer, antibacterial soap Handmade or purchased lap throws from Walmart or Target Socks and slippers are always appreciated to help feet stay warm! Hats, gloves, scarves – either handmade or purchased Snack crackers or snack bars/protein bars Cards/Card games Small notepads, pens and pencils Game books – crossword puzzles, Word Find, Sudoku Hard candy such as peppermints or Werther’s Small size lotions, hand creams and shampoos/conditioners CDs or DVDs of music/movies from the 30’s, 40’s or 50’s. Musicals are always a big hit! Holiday films such as White Christmas are also popular! Unbreakable holiday decorations such as statues, wreaths or Christmas tree decorations can help cheer up a home! For safety reasons, please do not donate candles or snow globes.
