PVC To Host 2nd Annual Princeton Athletics Golf Classic On Monday, May 8th Mark your calendars for Monday, May 8th, for the second annual Princeton Athletics Golf Classic, to be held at Springdale Golf Course. On hand will be several Princeton Athletics coaches and studentathletes, so make sure to get your foursome ready.

The day will begin with a barbeque style luncheon and registration at 11:30 a.m., with golf teeing off at 1 p.m. Immediately following the tournament will be a cocktail party and silent auction. Women’s Lacrosse Earns Top-3 Preaseason Ranking The Princeton women’s lacrosse team was ranked third in the first Bounce Entertainment/ Inside Lacrosse Division I Women’s Media Poll, which was released prior to the season opener.

The Tigers, who finished 13-5 a year ago, earned 270 points in a vote of 16 media members.

Princeton has been the No. 1-ranked team in the Inside Lacrosse Media Poll and the STX/USILA

Coaches’ Poll, at some point in each of the last four seasons.

Defending national champion Northwestern earned 14 of the 16 first-place votes and the top spot in the preseason poll. Duke earned the remaining two first-place votes and the second spot in the poll.

After Princeton, Maryland (250) and North Carolina (241) rounded out the top five spots.

Confines At Clarke Field Will Be Even Friendlier Renovations are underway at Clarke Field, the home of Princeton baseball. The field will receive an upgrade during this fall and winter and be ready when the 2006 season begins in March.

Included in the work are the installation of a brand new infield and the repositioning of the outfield fences.

The most noticeable change to the fans eye will come in the outfield, where the fences will be pulled in. The biggest change will come in left center where the fence will move from its current distance of 401 feet to 375 feet. Center field will move in 11 feet to 400. The new fence will be a six-foot fence, replacing the four-foot fence that currently stands there. A new warning track will be constructed at the base of the new fence.

FieldTurf Installed, Ready For ’06 Princeton Stadium got a face lift this winter, and the results could do wonders for the program.

The installation of FieldTurf, which began following the successful 2005 campaign, is complete and will allow the football team to practice and compete on a premier surface. FieldTurf is currently in use in more than 25 NCAA Division I-A football stadiums including Nebraska, Michigan, Wisconsin, Oregon, Washington, Kansas State, Boston College and Missouri.

“On behalf of the University and the Athletic Department, I want to thank Bill Powers ‘79, and the Princeton Football Association for their leadership, cooperation and generosity in enabling us to install FieldTurf, a surface that will ensure greater and more diverse athletic use of the stadium for competitions and practice,” Director of Athletics Gary Walters said.

Eric The Great His best saves aren’t in net • by Yariv Amir

F

or more than three years, fans of Princeton hockey have seen Eric Leroux’s name in box scores, watched him defend his goal on the ice, and rooted for him to make the big save in important situations. While Leroux, the player, is currently enjoying his best season at Princeton, Leroux, the person, has come up big no matter the situation.

In January, Leroux was selected as one of seven finalists for the prestigious Hockey Humanitarian Award, which recognizes one college hockey player each year for his or her personal character, scholarship, and giving of oneself off the ice to the larger community.

While it is not easy to balance a college education, a varsity sport, and community service, Leroux has somehow managed to master all three. At Princeton, he is currently a senior majoring in ecology and evolutionary biology. He is a twotime ECACHL All-Academic team member and who will graduate with the pre-med requirements necessary to attend medical school.

On the ice, Leroux has been Princeton’s last line of defense for the last four years, playing in 75 games with a 3.40 goals-against average and an .899 save percentage.

His senior season has been his best at Princeton, with a 2.46 goalsagainst and a .921 save percentage into February. He also has a careerhigh in wins this season, and he led Princeton to impressive home wins over perennial conference powers Cornell, Clarkson and St. Lawrence.

While Leroux’s accomplishments on the ice and in the classroom are certainly impressive, it is what he has spent his spare time doing that separates him from your average college athlete. He is involved in countless community service projects that go on through the year, and he has spent his offseason, each of the past two summers, volunteering in third world countries. Last summer, he spent 10 weeks in Kenya working with

the Foundation for Sustainable Development.

A Super Family Reunion After two big games, Tiger sophomore goes to The Game • by Andrew Borders

sk any Princeton student what he or she did during the first weekend in February.

Some might say they stayed around campus, hung out on Prospect Street. Others might say they took the train to New York City for a day away. Only one would say she played in two college basketball games on the road, got on a private plane to watch her father win the Super Bowl and was back on campus in time for Monday morning classes.

Meagan Cowher, a sophomore Princeton hoopster, did just that Feb. 3-5. On that Friday, the Tigers played at Yale, winning by 16 points and extending their streak of victories to seven and four in the Ivy League. The next night, Princeton took on Brown, falling by two points after surging back from 14 down at halftime. The next morning, Cowher was on a plane to Detroit. That night, she was at midfield, appearing on tens of millions of television sets next to her sisters and parents, one of whom was holding a celebrated silver trophy.

The next morning, she was just like any other Princeton student once again.

When the plane provided by the Pittsburgh Steeler-owning Rooney family landed in Detroit, Meagan, her two sisters, Lauren and Lindsay and mother Kaye, met father Bill at the Steeler hotel to exchange long-overdue hugs and face-

to-face greetings. After taking a much-needed nap at the family’s quarters for the weekend, the Cowher family was off to Ford Field in downtown Detroit for a moment 10 years in the making since Pittsburgh’s last Super Bowl appearance.

“It was awesome to see; the Super Bowl logo was everywhere,” Meagan says of the dressed-up Motor City. The Cowhers watched the game from somewhere unusual for them­ — actual stadium seats. “It was a great experience to be right there in the middle of the excitement,” she says, having seen most of her football from a private box in Pittsburgh. Now, she was as close to broadcaster John Madden as to Steeler quarterback Ben Roethlisberger.

With a few minutes left in the game, a Super Bowl staffer came to escort the Cowhers to field level. “We didn’t see much of the last few minutes.

It was a blur going through the maze under the stadium, and then we were right there on the field,” Meagan remembers. Not long after the game ended, she found her Gatorade-drenched father’s embrace for the first time as a world championship coach. Soon, she was in view of the entire world for the trophy presentation.

But as quickly as it happened, the moment left.

She was back at basketball practice the next day, her teammates joining her in learning lessons from dropping the game to Brown and needing to fight off other contenders for the Ivy title instead of being in the driver’s seat. But after being each other’s fans all season as the two were apart, Bill Cowher now gets to be Meagan’s fan in person.

“He has been there for all of us, so having him here isn’t unusual. He made plans weeks ago to be at the [Harvard and Dartmouth home] games and he was sad he hadn’t been to a game yet this year,” Meagan says.

Bill and his wife Kaye were at Jadwin five days after the Super Bowl for the win against Harvard. Even with her 14-point, nine rebound performance that night, it seems Meagan has learned more about athletics from her father than just how to play the game.

“Of course, every team wants to be there at the end and win the league title,” Meagan says.

“We’re going to take it one week at a time.”

Sounds like something a football coach would say. But Tiger fans hope that Meagan follows her father in more than just her outlook on the season. Bringing home a trophy to match dad’s wouldn’t hurt, either. continues on Page 6

Princeton’s Doar P J

ohn Doar, who was born to the Northern winter of 1921 and then made his greatest impact literally in the Southern heat, has been named one of three winners of the 2006 NCAA Inspiration Award.

The Inspiration Award, which is not automatically awarded annually, recognizes a current or former coach, administrator or varsity letter-winner at an NCAA institution who when confronted with a lifealtering situation used perseverance, dedication and determination to overcome the event and now serves as a role model for others.

Doar, a 1944 Princeton graduate who lettered in basketball, is being honored for a career that saw him become one of the most important figures in the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s. Doar will share the award with Amherst lacrosse goalie Raul Altreche, who went from being orphaned and abandoned in New York City at an early age to become a high school honor student and college student-athlete, and Lois Taurman, who lettered in three sports at Bellarmine and then continued her nursing education and athletic career despite an accident that left her a quadriplegic. The three will be honored at the NCAA convention Jan. 7, 2006, in Indianapolis.

“We are greatly appreciative that the NCAA chose to honor one of Princeton’s finest,” said Director of Athletics Gary Walters. “John Doar a towering figure in the history of the American Civil Rights movement who at the same time is a man of great humility and modesty.

He represents the very best of the student-athletecitizen ideal.”

Doar was born in Minnesota and grew up in northern Wisconsin as the son of a country lawyer. He majored in history at Princeton and averaged seven points per game as a junior on a basketball team that included Bud Palmer and Butch van Breda Kolff. After taking a year off to train as a fighter pilot (the war would end before he could be deployed), Doar returned and averaged eight points per game as a senior before breaking his hand and missing most of his final season.

After graduating from Princeton, he then went to law school at the University of California, after which he returned to his roots and the family practice.

“Then I looked around late in 1959 and became conscious from newspaper articles and magazines that nothing had happened with segregation since I left Princeton,” he says. “A friend of mine called me and asked if I’d like to go to work for the Justice Department, in the Civil Rights Division. It didn’t take me long to say I’d do it. I moved my family to Washington on July 4, 1960.”

At the time the entire staff consisted of four lawyers.

35 Years Of Memories, Progress T

hirty-five years ago, the first women’s varsity athletics teams competed for Princeton University.

In 1971-72, six sports debuted as basketball, field hockey, rowing, squash, swimming and tennis provided the initial varsity opportunities for women at Princeton. During the next 35 years, Princeton added 12 sports, bringing the total to 18 varsity sports for women, totaling one of the largest offerings in the nation.

On Saturday, February 11, 2006, Princeton honored the women who have participated in 35 years of varsity athletics at a luncheon hosted by the Princeton Varsity Club.

Dr. Donnica Moore ‘81 (swimming & diving) emceed the celebration held in Jadwin Gymnasium. Dr. Moore is the President of Sapphire Women’s Health Group and a national leader in Women’s lacrosse coach Chris Sailer women’s health issues.

Also in attendance and making (left) was one of many attendees who enjoyed the photo display. remarks were University President Shirley Tilghman, Director of Athletics Gary Walters ‘67 and Associate Director of Athletics Erin McDermott. President Tilghman not only paid tribute to all of the wonderful female athletes in the room but also to the many coaches who helped guide them through their four years at Princeton. Walters highlighted PVC board member the many accomplishments of Princeton women athletes through his tenure and pioneer varsity while McDermott provided the historical context of how far women’s athletics athlete Margie have come.

n the second of three seasonal installments, the PVC winter coaches’ luncheon brought together coaches, student-athletes, university staff and alumni to discuss the current state of Princeton Athletics.

The highlight of the afternoon came in the form of several moving addresses given by senior student-athletes from the women’s basketball, men’s basketball, men’s ice hockey Head coach Guy Gadowsky and student-athletes and wrestling programs. on the men’s hockey team Pat Neundorfer ’06, Guests were treated to tales Eric Leroux ’06 spoke at the recent PVC coaches’ of thesis writing, team trips luncheon. and summer internships that varied from time spent on Wall Street to conducting research while living in a mud hut in Kenya. Head coaches Richard Barron (women’s basketball), Joe Scott ’87 (men’s basketball), Guy Gadowsky (men’s ice hockey) and Mike New (wrestling) also shared season highlights and plans for the future with the nearly 100 guests in attendance.

Coach-Speak At Winter Luncheon I

The early ‘60s Damani Leech ’97, John Doar ’42 were a time and Gary Walters ’67 Doar spent crisscrossing the South, working through the judiciary branch to pass and enforce laws promoting racial equality. The staff of his division quadrupled, and their efforts resulted in some of the greatest social gains in the history of the country.

Along the way Doar was the point man on several epic projects. In 1963 he successfully prosecuted seven men accused of murdering three civil rights workers in Mississippi. He was at the front of the legendary civil rights march from Selma to Montgomery in Alabama.

His work in the first half of the decade led Congress to pass the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which eliminated all traditional hindrances to registering black voters.

Within one year a quarter of a million new black voters in the South had registered.

Perhaps his most dangerous role in the South came in 1964, when he personally took James Meredith to desegregate the University of Mississippi.

“They had taken Meredith up there once, and they had been turned away,” Doar says. “The president and the attorney general were determined he was going to get into that university. I went with him the next time, and we were turned away. On the fourth trip we got in.

That night there was a riot. I lived with him for the next few weeks.”

After nearly eight years of being on the road more than 200 days a year, Doar left the division to work on a project in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn.

“Robert Kennedy asked me to work there,” Doar says. “Three or four months later, he was killed. I felt I owed it to him to stay, he had done so many good things for me. I stayed for six years.”

At that point New Jersey Congressman Peter Rodino called Doar to become part of another dramatic moment in 20th century history, the investigation into the possible impeachment of Richard Nixon after the Watergate scandal. Doar, a lifelong Republican, became chief counsel for the House Judiciary Committee.

Once his impeachment became an inevitability, Nixon resigned in August of 1974. Doar then returned to private practice, where he still works today.

“My personality is such that I never needed to talk to a newspaperman,” he says. “I didn’t need to see my picture around. I didn’t need to leak anything to anyone. I just was part of a hard-working group of people who had a spirit grounded in hope. It was the kind of spirit where you do things not because of the likelihood of success but rather because they’re the right thing to do.”

rinceton became my “foster” home during one of the most difficult times of my life and at the same time a stepping stone on my intellectual journey.

I left Czechoslovakia five days after the 1968 invasion by Warsaw Pact Army—tanks were stationed in front of my house with angry citizens raising their fists up toward the bewildered Russian soldiers who had thought they would be greeted with flowers. Quietly, my mother and uncle escorted me and my brother to the train station and bid us farewell. My brother, however, was taken off the train at the border, I made it out.

A year later Princeton turned out to be my home away from home and the family of Professor James H. Billington took me in and embraced me as a member of their family.

Princeton University accepted me as a transfer student only days after I had received a letter from my government that I was being tried in absentia for not having returned within the exit permit deadline.

My time at Princeton University was filled with feelings of euphoria, hard work, intellectual challenge, and also observations that often left me puzzled. While behind the “Iron Curtain” we thought of the United States as the most progressive force in the world. I viewed equality and co-education to be a strong part of progress and could not understand the big fuss over girls and minorities on the Princeton campus in 1969. I was shocked when I heard that my roommate (who graduated cum laude in 1973)

PVC Tigers in the Community

I also help many who neglected their physical well-being get back on track.

My “Princeton experience” did not end with my graduation. The years at Princeton were the first phase. I went on to Stanford for my MAT and then proceeded to teach in American Schools all over the world. I lived on five continents over a period of 20 plus years. Throughout those decades after I graduated, I continued to absorb and contemplate what I had learned from my Princeton professors. Things started to make sense with time almost like wine gets better as it ages. Historical events began to fall in proper perspective and/or I began to see things in a more clear fashion. I realized the false information we had been given behind the “Iron Curtain” about world affairs, and I reshuffled that information as I visited monuments to commemorate significant events that altered the world of today.

In 1996 I returned to the U.S. and yet another phase of my intellectual process took place; a process that is still related to those first few years in Princeton. Only now I objectively understand the tumultuous time at which I arrived on U.S. soil in the summer of 1969 – Woodstock; anti-Vietnam war demonstrations; ROTC riots, Kent State shooting; racial unrests, hippie sub-culture. I could not straightforwardly relate to those events then. I did not yet fathom the scope of profound changes that took place in America in the 1960s; only through literature and participation in various events I acquired deeper appreciation of what the society on this continent underwent while we, behind the Iron Curtain, were fighting for our freedom.

Simply said, Princeton grassroots will stay with me ­— for ever!

Princeton Honors National Girls & Women In Sports Day T

he Princeton University Department of Athletics celebrated its annual National Girls and Women’s in Sports Day with an

interactive sports fair held prior to the women’s basketball game versus Dartmouth on Saturday, Feb. 11, 2006.

Featured sports included cheerleading, crew, fencing,

field hockey, golf, lacrosse, soccer, softball, squash, swimming & diving, tennis, track & field, volleyball and water polo. Stations explaining the physics and chemistry of sport were also included.

Close Family Pledges Major Gift to Princeton Varsity Club Ray Close ’51, a former Princeton lacrosse player and longtime Unites States Diplomat, has pledged a portion of his charitable remainder trust in the name of the Princeton Varsity Club. In the future, the gift will help fund ongoing cultural exchange programs Raymond H. Close ’51 & Martha W. Close for Princeton female student-athletes who take part in foreign tours. Per NCAA rules, every four years, each Princeton athletic team has the opportunity to travel abroad to compete against foreign teams while benefiting from the unique opportunity to explore a foreign culture. Traditionally, these trips have been funded nearly exclusively via Friends groups annual funds, sport specific endowments and/or contributions from the athletes themselves.

However, Mr. Close’s gift paves the way for women’s programs to draw support from a discretionary pool of Princeton Varsity Club funds to support these cultural exchange trips.

Mr. Close comes by his Princeton affinity honestly. He recalls his first connection with Princeton as a young boy in Lebanon in the 1930s, huddled over a short-wave radio with his father (Harold ’10) and brothers (Ralph ’44 and Art ’46), trying to hear through the crackling static whether the Tigers had won a football game against Yale. Close continued his connection with Princeton by enrolling in the fall of 1947, competing on the men’s lacrosse team while staying active in ROTC, graduating in 1951 and spending 26 years serving our country in the foreign service.

Thank you Ray ‘51 and Martha Close for your generous gift in the name of the PVC! Your efforts will help us to continue to execute our mission to enhance the experience of our current and former Princeton student-athletes.

“Tigers in the Community” works with many community partners to reach across borders to educate: to teach values through sport, build character, sportsmanship and intellect.

Princeton’s student-athletes and the athletic department recognize that they have the resources and identity which allow for a valuable and meaningful partnership with the community.

Tigers in the Community supports the studentathlete in his/her broader educational goals to give back to the community.
