This special issue of the Princeton Varsity Club News commemorates the start of classes at Princeton for the 2012-13 academic year! With the beginning of this semester, the Princeton Athletics Class of 2016 joins the many Tigers who have come before them in facing the dual challenges of world-class competition on the field and in the classroom!

In this edition of the PVC News, we will highlight the Princeton Athletics community’s many successes this summer, both domestically and abroad, on and off the fields of play. Most spectacularly, eighteen Tigers represented four different countries on the Olympics’ global stage in London. The group won seven medals, eclipsing the production of every other Ivy League school, as well as all schools in the Big East, Big Ten and Atlantic Coast Conferences.

Off the field, the PVC’s “Tigers in the Community” efforts headed forward at full-steam ahead. In July, women’s soccer assistant coach Esmeralda Negron ’05 headed for Haiti, where she helped build an adult professional school and conducted soccer clinics. The trip, supported in part by the Princeton Athletics staff, coaches and family members Princeton Varsity Club as an extension of the PVC Service Circle program, was a “life-changing one” at the KaBOOM! Playground Build in Trenton for Negron. Later in the summer, Princeton Athletics administrators, coaches and their families visited the Monument School in Trenton, site of last spring’s Reading with the Tigers efforts, to help build the school’s first playground in a single day.

The project was also supported by the YMCA of Trenton, site of this past spring’s Weapons of Mass Construction event.

The momentum continues this fall, as the PVC will host and support its traditional slate of events, including the Frosh-Soph Barbeque, Collegians for the Cure, the Fall PVC Coaches Luncheon, the Jake McCandless ’51 PVC Speaker Series, On the Road events, and more. None of this would be possible without the support of PVC members, and for that, we say THANK YOU! We hope you will choose to continue to support both your Athletics Friends Group and the Princeton Varsity Club on an annual basis. STUDENT INITIATIVE: COACH 4 AMERICA Do you live in New York City, Boston, Philadelphia, D.C., Chicago, San Francisco, or L.A.?

Current track & field student-athlete Brooke Biederman ’14 has started a national community service initiative called Coach 4 America, which places young Princeton alumni with strong athletic backgrounds in part-time volunteer coaching positions at the middle- or high-school level.

The organization has two goals:

- To improve the quality of youth athletics and fitness in America by increasing the number of qualified coaches.

- To encourage young athletes to aspire to greatness, on and off the field, by exposing them to talented and energetic recent college graduates who are committed to excellence.

QUICK HITS: TIGERS ROAR IN LONDON Eighteen current and former Princeton student-athletes earned seven total medals at the London Olympics; medal output greater than individual totals for 171 participating countries Princeton’s 18 Olympians and their performances at the Games of the XXX Olympiad: GOLD: Caroline Lind ’06 (United States, Women’s 8 Rowing) Lind was positioned in seat 7 in the U.S. boat dubbed “The Invincibles” that lead through every split marker of its opening heat 1 and the finals, winning by six seconds and one and a half seconds, respectively.

SILVER: Andreanne Morin ’06 (Canada, Women’s 8 Rowing) Morin sat in the stroke position for the silver medal-winning Canadian team which finished just behind the Americans and ahead of the Netherlands in the finals.

Lauren Wilkinson ’11 (Canada, Women’s 8 Rowing) Wilkinson rowed in seat 4 for the Canadian team, which won its preliminary, heat 2, with a faster time than the gold medalwinning U.S. boat posted in its preliminary (heat 1).

BRONZE: Maya Lawrence ’02 (United States, Women’s Epee Fencing) Lawrence held a strong presence throughout the U.S. women’s epee team’s run to the bronze medal. She earned 15 touch points in the quarterfinal match versus Italy, a 45-36 win. She then scored 9 of 31 points in the team’s overtime win over Russia to earn the bronze medal.

Diana Matheson ’08 (Canada, Women’s Soccer) After playing every minute of every game in the Olympic tournament for her team, Matheson’s goal in injury time lifted Canada over France to win the bronze medal, 1-0. The medal is Canada’s first in a Summer Olympics team sport since 1936. “It feels amazing... it feels unreal, it feels like a dream.

We felt as a group that we were going to earn this and we did, in the last minute,” she told the Associated Press after the game.

Glenn Ochal ’08 (United States, Men’s 4 Rowing) Ochal was seated in the bow seat for the U.S. boat that finished in first place in both its opening heat and semifinal, before finishing four seconds ahead of Greece in the final to take the bronze medal.

Susannah Scanlan ’14 (United States, Women’s Epee Fencing) Scanlan, competing on the U.S. women’s epee team, earned 13 touch points out of 45 team points in a 9-point quarterfinal win over Italy, getting the team off to a strong start in its run to the bronze medal.

OTHER PERFORMANCES OF NOTE: David Blatt ’81 (Russia, Men’s Basketball Head Coach) Blatt coached the Russian men’s basketball team to a 4-1 record in the group stage (including a win over Spain, the eventual silver-medalists). They then bested Lithuania in the quarterfinals, before losing to Spain in the semifinal and defeating Argentina 81-77 to win the bronze medal.

Donn Cabral ’12 (United States, Men’s Track & Field - Steeplechase) Cabral finished fourth in his opening heat, eight-tenths of a second off the lead (and 0.49 seconds behind eventual goldmedalist Ezekiel Kemboi of Kenya) in the 3,000-meter race.

Cabral finished eighth in the final.

Sara Hendershot ’10 (United States, Women’s Pair Rowing) Hendershot and partner Sarah Zelenka finished second in their opening heat behind the eventual gold medalist pair from Great Britain, before missing out on a medal by 0.2 seconds in the final race (and .55 seconds from silver) in the roughly seven-and-a-half minute, 2000-meter race.

SUMMER REVIEW: TIGERS IN THE COMMUNITY Women’s soccer assistant coach Esmeralda Negron ’05 kicked off the summer by delivering much-needed work in Haiti, with support from the PVC Service Circle program. Here is her story, in her own words: Three weeks ago I embarked on my first service trip. I was headed to Haiti with the “Konekte” group, which means connect in Creole. The group was comprised of families, young adults and Princeton Football Club (PFC) soccer coaches from the Princeton community. Our group leader was Anne Hoppenot, whose son Antoine, was a former Princeton soccer player and currently plays professionally with the MLS’s Philadelphia Union. Despite a mix of backgrounds we all shared the same eagerness to arrive and get started on our mission. While we had no idea what to expect we did know that the country was still in need after the devastating earthquake that hit Port Au Prince in 2010, killing roughly 500,000 people.

After retrieving our luggage we began our nearly two-hour trek to our hotel in the town of Fonds Parisien. We would be doing all of our work in Fonds Parisien and the surrounding villages (east of Port au Prince, in rural Haiti). It would be a combination of construction work on an adult professional school along with soccer and art activities with the local villages. Our bus was old and had no air conditioning, yet compared to the surroundings it seemed quite luxurious. Along the road we passed by tent villages where the “US Aid” emblem on the tents was nearly faded out. It was surreal to see so many people still without proper homes, living in old and battered tents two years later.

We certainly did not see any strip malls along the way, and the comforts of Princeton, N.J. quickly faded. In their place were some small businesses and stands selling local produce and used clothing and shoes.

When we arrived in Fonds Parisien at the Peace and Love Hotel, we quickly realized that we would be completely out of our element for the next 10 days. Our hotel rooms were not equipped with air conditioning or hot water, and electricity had to be used sparingly. The Peace and Love Hotel would not be considered five star by American standards, but our group certainly found comfort in returning there every night. We quickly realized that fresh running water and electricity were both luxuries in the area, and we felt blessed to have these simple comforts.

During our first two days in Haiti, we did construction on the adult professional school whose anticipated fall completion seemed improbable, as the school relies on volunteer groups to continue construction. On the first day, we dug a three-foot trench along one side of the school for the surrounding security fence. It took us seven hours and several pick axes, rakes, and shovels to complete the trench. Our second day was the most grueling. We started work at 7:30 a.m. and finished at 7:30 p.m. Our 25-person team worked with local construction workers and volunteers to pass 20,000 buckets of cement in an assembly line to cement the entire roof of the school. We were exhausted by the end of the two days but felt a great sense of accomplishment at what we had achieved as a team.

After our first few days of construction we moved into the next phase of our trip and my favorite. We interacted with the local people; participating in soccer activities as well as arts and crafts with children and adults in local villages. One of the villages was accessible by car but the other, called village Canès, required a 30-minute hike to get to. The people of village Canès had no direct access to fresh water, having to walk nearly an hour one way just to retrieve one bucket of fresh water. They all lived in mud huts and had no access to electricity or proper plumbing. Many of these people did not have food readily available to them either. A sound education system and organized athletics where children could grow up to realize their dreams did not seem to be readily available. It was hard accepting the fact that we could not fix everything for them. However, the joy we shared in our interactions with each other and our common love for the game of soccer certainly went a long way.

What I found really amazing about the Haitian people was their enthusiasm and excitement for the game. Despite how impoverished some of the villages were, you could always find a soccer field. None of them had grass.

Most were just dirt with some rocks mixed in and goals made out of sticks and branches of trees, but that made it all the more incredible.

During the course of the 10 days, I had the opportunity to play with and coach young girls, be the only female competing in pick-up matches with men and help organize a men’s tournament for nearby villages. All of the young girls were eager to play with me and the older women were enthralled that a woman was competing with men. Every environment was intense in a good way and once the balls got rolled out you could see the sheer joy on everyone’s faces.

Throughout my career as a player and coach, soccer has taken me all over the world. My trip to Haiti, however, was certainly a life-changing one. I was humbled by how little many of the people I interacted with had, yet how spirited they were. I gained a deeper appreciation for what I have and the experiences I have been afforded.

I would like to give a special thanks to the Friends of Princeton Soccer and the Princeton Varsity Club as my trip was an extension of the PVC Service Circle program as well as the department’s motto of “Education Through Athletics.”

My outlook on life has certainly changed, and I will never forget the experiences I was able to share with all the young children and adults in Haiti. I will forever be grateful for the opportunities I have had first to attend and now to coach at a university like Princeton.

Many of our players and staff have made contributions abroad. Ron Celestin, our assistant coach, is from Haiti and it was great to be able to gain a greater understanding and appreciation for his culture and country. Diane MetcalfLeggette ‘14, Claire Pinciaro ‘13, MicKenzie Roberts-Lahti ‘15 and Kristin Watson ‘13 are all current Princeton women’s soccer players who have also participated in service trips to Haiti. Sara Chehrehsa ‘12 is overseas in Uganda for the year working with Soccer Without Borders. Rachel Sheehy ‘13, Alison Nabatoff ‘13, and Rebecca Shmoys ‘13 also did trips with Soccer Without Borders in Nicaragua. The Princeton women’s soccer program hopes to continue sharing their love for the game with people around the world.

In August, Princeton Athletics administrators, coaches and their families participated in a playground build at Monument Elementary School in Trenton, site of this past spring’s Reading with the Tigers event.

Although the Monument Elementary School serves 468 children from pre-kindergarten through 8th grade (92% of whom receive free or reduced-cost lunch), it has had no playground for the kids to use. When teachers wanted their classes to enjoy physical activity, they would have to borrow equipment (such as a ball) from the school’s physical education teacher, and head out to a blacktop-covered parking lot.

That changed in August, when a group of Princeton Athletics volunteers joined a throng of community volunteers for a KaBOOM! playground build on the school’s grounds. In just one day, a full playground was installed through an all-out effort from the group. The event was organized and run through the Monument School, the Trenton YMCA, and New Jersey Partnership for Healthy Kids.

Volunteers begin to work in the open lot adjacent to the school, which represents the only place for the students to play before the playground build. KaBOOM! is an organization that conducts one-day playground builds around the country.

MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY has begun the season with a flourish, ranked #21 in the nation and cruising with a season-opening firstplace finish at Penn State’s Spiked Shoe Invitational. Alejandro Arroyo Yamin ’14 finished in first, followed by Eddie Owens ’15 (3rd), team captain Chris Bendtsen ’14 (4th), and Tyler Udland ’14 (5th).

Look for all four to feature prominently this season, as the team looks to earn its seventh straight Ivy League team championship.

The team is already 4-0 to start the season, including wins at #5 Duke, #8 Penn State, #13 Wake Forest, and in the home opener over Richmond at the new Bedford Field. The team opens the year with five consecutive games against BIG EAST competition, claiming a win over Seton Hall so far. MEN’S TENNIS welcomes new head coach Billy Pate to Old Nassau for the 2012-13 season. Pate had previously spent 10 years as the head coach at the University of Alabama, where he guided the team to seven NCAA tournament appearances. On the court, two-time Ivy League Player of the Year Matija Pecotic ’13 returns, along with Matt Siow ’13 and Matt Spindler ’13. Pecotic is ranked 67th nationally to begin the year, while Siow and Spindler are the 36th-ranked doubles pair. Upcoming home appearances (Lenz Tennis Center/Jadwin Gymnasium): Sept. 14th-16th: Farnsworth/Princeton Invitational, All Day WOMEN’S TENNIS is under the leadership of new head coach Laura Granville this year. Granville is a nine-year veteran of the WTA Tour and two-time individual NCAA champion. Players receving early recognition on her team are Lindsay Graff ’15 and Katherine Flanigan ’14; Graff is ranked 118th nationally in singles, and, along with Flanigan is ranked 57th in doubles. WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL enters Sabrina King ’01’s second season as head coach deep on talent and experience. Her team is led by tricaptains Lydia Rudnick ’13 (two-time first-team All-Ivy League), Molly Bagshaw ’13 and Jennifer Palmquist ’13. Rudnick is a two-time AllIvy outside hitter and could be the top offensive player in the league.

The Tigers could have four underclassmen starting, including All-Ivy setter Ginny Willis ‘15. PRINCETON VARSITY CLUB MEMBERSHIP OPTIONS: PVC Lifetime Membership ($5,000+): Your one-time, tax-deductible gift of $5,000 will provide essential long-term support for PVC programs and initiatives that benefit the entire Princeton Athletics community.

Lifetime Members will receive special recognition at all PVC events and the exclusive PVC Lifetime Member gold pin, as well as all benefits associated with general membership and the PVC Service Circle.

PVC Service Circle ($500-$4,999): Each year, the PVC is contacted by civic-minded Princeton student-athletes and coaches about the opportunity to give back to the community. A portion of your annual gift will be used to help fund student-athleterun Service Circle initiatives, providing current Tiger athletes with new leadership opportunities that will also benefit the surrounding community!

PVC Annual Member ($150-$499): For those wishing to make an annual, tax-deductible donation that will support broad-based initiatives benefitting all Princeton student-athletes. PVC Annual Members will receive the PVC Annual Membership Pin, invitations to PVC events for the member and a guest, and a subscription to the PVC News!

PVC Young Alumni Program: Earn Your Stripes!

Starting for the first time in fiscal year 2013 (July 1, 2012-June 30, 2013), the PVC will offer full annual membership to young alumni (classes of ’07-’11) who make a gift of any amount to a Princeton Athletics Friends Group! Earn Your Stripes today and reap the benefits of being a member of the PVC and an Athletics Friends Group!

PVC Donor ($1-$149): Annual, tax-deductible gifts at the PVC Donor level will be recognized in the year-end edition of the PVC News, and on the PVC Awards Banquet donor roll!

PRINCETON ATHLETICS FRIENDS GROUPS: Separately from the PVC, each varsity and club sport at Princeton University has an individual Friends Group that provides essential operations funding for that sport. The Athletic Department and Princeton coaches rely on the financial support of their Athletics Friends Group for continued success in their programs, and to remain competitive in recruiting and maintaining quality experiences for student-athletes at Princeton University.
