PVC AWARDS BANQUET May 31, 2018

Welcome! Welcome to The Gary Walters ’67 PVC Awards Banquet! A number of honors will be presented tonight. Each represents the storied history of Tiger Athletics in its own way, and each recipient will have his or her position etched permanently in the history of Princeton University. In addition to recognizing the accomplishments of select Princeton studentathletes, alumni, administrators and friends, the PVC Awards Banquet serves as the capstone to the Princeton student-athlete experience. Tonight, the Great Class of 2018 comes together for one last time under Cleveland Tower to celebrate four years of accomplishments on the field, in the classroom and in the community. The members of the Class of 2018 who are in attendance will also have the opportunity to participate in several traditions. During the program, the contributions of the class will be recognized by the PVC through the official presentation of Princeton Varsity Club lapel pins. The pin represents past and future contributions, and carries with it complimentary PVC membership for the 2018-2019 year. After the rendition of Old Nassau at the conclusion of tonight’s program, each senior letterwinner will be ushered into a distinguished group of alumni through receipt of the traditional Princeton “P” letter sweater. Due to the exceptional generosity of the PVC members and sponsors, the letter sweater is free of charge. To the Great Class of 2018 and all in attendance: THANK YOU, and GO TIGERS!

Marvin Bressler Award Awarded to the member of the Princeton family who, through heartfelt support of the University’s student-athletes and coaches, best embodies a belief in the lifelong lessons taught by competition and athletics as a complement to the overall educational mission. Awarded in the spirit of Marvin Bressler, professor of sociology, 1963-94.

Marvin Bressler When speaking of two of his favorite Princetonians, retired basketball coach Pete Carril and president Robert Goheen, Marvin Bressler said that they shared “a kind of monumental integrity, enormous competence, an overwhelming work ethic and the conviction that character is to be cherished over talent.” Those are also characteristics that describe Bressler and in part are why Princeton’s Department of Athletics introduced the Marvin Bressler Award in 1997. Bressler joined the Princeton faculty in 1963 and spent 30 years teaching young men and women sociology and how to think for themselves. He served as the chairman of the department for two decades, and his scholarly interests included the influence of education on

social behavior, the impact of society on idea systems and the development of sociological theory. Bressler received his bachelor’s degree in education from Temple University and his master’s and Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Pennsylvania. He spent five years as an assistant professor at Penn before joining the faculty at New York University in 1957. An honorary member of two Princeton classes, 1968 and 1982, Bressler retired in 1994 and received the Alumni Council Award for Service to Princeton. It was said that he was dedicated to Alumni Colleges out of the strong conviction that “the University takes on an obligation to maintain an educational relationship with students for a lifetime. Undergraduate education is the beginning, not the end.”

Marvin Bressler Award Dov Weinryb Grohsgal *13 h14 Grohsgal’s contributions cannot be remotely measured by his actual job description. Instead, Princeton’s athletes know him as someone who has had their backs at all times, and they also know that with him they’ve had someone to reach out to day or night when they’ve needed help balancing their athletic and academic loads. The list of students he has helped is enormous, all while maintaining his easy-going personality and strong sense of humor. His current title is Associate Research Scholar and Lecturer in the Department of History and the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University. From 2015 until recently, he served as Associate Dean in the Office of the Dean of the College, where his primary responsibilities included advising studentathletes, overseeing the Academic-Athletic Fellows Program and managing the Freshman Seminars Program. Grohsgal received his doctorate in history from Princeton in 2013, and he has taught in a variety of academic units, including the Department of History, the Woodrow Wilson School, the Freshman Scholars Institute and the Princeton Writing Program (where he received the Quin Morton ’36 Teaching Award). His research focuses on school desegregation and civil rights in the 1960s and 1970s; the Nixon administration; and the history of poverty. His first book is under contract with the University of North Carolina Press and is due out in 2019. He also serves as an Academic-Athletic Fellow for multiple Princeton athletic teams, helping to manage the relationship between academic and athletic affairs. He is an honorary member of the Class of 2014, a fellow at Mathey College, and a faculty adviser in Wilson College. A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Emory University, Grohsgal majored in history and economics and was a two-time captain of the crew team.

Art Lane ’34 Award Awarded to an undergraduate athlete in recognition of his or her selfless contribution to sport and society. Given in memory of Art Lane ’34 by friends and family.

Art Lane ’34

When he graduated in 1934, Art Lane was celebrated as a class leader, standout athlete, Pyne Prize winner and all-around good guy. During the course of his long life, he added to that record of achievement with distinguished service in the United States Navy in World War II, as a federal judge and as a corporate general counsel. The 1933 Princeton football squad he captained completed an undefeated and untied season, outscoring its opponents 217-8. University rules against postseason play kept the team from accepting a Rose Bowl bid, but Princeton topped a number of polls as the country’s No. 1 team. In 1958, Sports Illustrated chose him for its Silver Anniversary All-America Football squad. Thirty years later, when The Sporting News published “College

Fo o t b a l l’s 2 5 Greatest Teams,” the book ranked the 1933 Princeton team at No. 25, which he loved. He would have been both delighted and amazed at h i s s e le c t i o n a s the captain of the Princeton Football Association’s AllCentury football team, in the midst of so many Princeton greats. In 1998, gifts made to Princeton in Art Lane’s memory were designated by his family to establish this annual award. While a trophy is more formal than his cheers from the sidelines and stands, the intent is the same.

Class of 1967 PVC Citizen-Athlete Award Presented by the Class of 1967 for selfless and noble contributions to sport and society.

Denna Laing ’14 Despite the grim prognosis, Laing has attacked her rehab, as she continues to work towards one day walking again. In the meantime, she also has refused to give up her active lifestyle and has devoted her time to helping others who suffer from spinal-cord injuries.

A 2014 Princeton grad, Laing will be the youngest recipient of the Citizen Athlete Award. In the short time since she graduated, though, she has faced her own catastrophic injury with exuberance and an unwavering resilience. Laing, a four-year letterwinner and two-time captain with the women’s hockey team, suffered a spinal cord injury while playing professionally in the inaugural Women’s Winter Classic on New Year’s Eve 2015. Since then, her body, but not her spirit, has been confined to a wheelchair.

Laing completed the 2017 Boston Marathon, pushed in her chair for the entire 26.2 miles by former NHL player Bobby Carpenter. Their efforts raised over $80,000 for Journey Forward, an exercise-based institution for spinal-cord injury patients. She has also become involved in rowing, along with her daily rehabilitation program at Journey Forward. Prior to her injury, Laing worked as a victim and witness advocate in the Essex County District Attorney’s office. She hopes to one day attend law school. Currently, Laing serves as an ambassador for the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation where she mentors and advocates for others with spinal cord injuries. A politics major at Princeton, she was a Student-Athlete Wellness Leader,

Her unwavering fire through her ordeal has not gone unnoticed, and she has been honored by the NHL, Journey Forward, NHL, Boston Bruins and the Boston Red Sox (i.e. Opening Day 2016, Denna Day at Frozen Fenway 2017).

PVC AWARDS BANQUET May 31, 2018 PRINCETON ATHLETICS FRIENDS GROUPS The Athletics Friends Groups at Princeton University support a wide range of needs and opportunities within each of the 37 varsity athletics teams. These 17 volunteer groups work diligently to raise funds for items such as out-ofregion and foreign travel, on-campus recruiting trips, specialized equipment, technology needs, events for alumni and team banquets. Annual donations to the Athletics Friends Groups can be used immediately by the program to which they are directed. Athletics Friends Groups aim to secure philanthropic and volunteer support that enables coaches to recruit and develop some of the finest scholarathletes in the world, and to provide our student-athletes with the best possible overall experience. Friends Groups events and programs (such as fundraising celebration dinners, alumni days, on-the-road gatherings and mentoring & networking nights) offer opportunities to connect with alumni and current student-athletes, and provide invaluable support and a direct impact on Princeton’s teams. For more information about Athletics Friends Groups, please contact Alexis Alcantara Brock, Associate Director – Athletics Fundraising, at 609.258.5955 or aalcanta@princeton.edu.
