ENGAGE 2020: “CHANGING THE GAME”

A group of distinguished Princeton Athletics’ alumni, all actively involved in professional sports, were featured as part of this year’s Princeton Entrepreneurship Council (PEC) Engage 2020 Conference.

The panel conversation, titled “Changing the Game: Innovation in Professional Sports in Response to COVID-19,” was moderated by Ford Family Director of Athletics, Mollie Marcoux Samaan ’91.

TIGERS TOGETHER CONVERSATIONS Princeton Athletics is excited to announce its Tigers Together initiative, an aggressive action plan to create and maintain a culture of mutual respect and unity, and to reaffirm the department’s commitment to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.

The department has assembled task forces comprised of staff, students and alumni to focus on: student-athlete and staff experience, student-athlete and staff recruitment, alumni engagement and community action.

As part of this ongoing effort, the PVC brought together pairs of Black athletic alumni to discuss their experiences as Black studentathletes and professionals, share their perspectives around the importance of community and allyship, and offer advice to current and future student-athletes. The conversations were moderated by PVC Board Member Steve Mills ’81 and Princeton basketball teammate and current University Trustee Craig Robinson ’83. The feature compilation video, as well as each individual conversation, will be available in February at GoPrincetonTigers.com/TigersTogether.

On being a leader and advocate for the Black community... “The most important thing for me has always been to make sure that I’m not the only one. If I get through the door, and I’m the first Black person in a certain role, I’m opening the door and holding it open to make sure I’m not the last.”

Hopefully they would be comfortable being open and being vocal and speaking their minds about experiences that a lot of the people they’re going to school with and the people they’re associating with may not have had the opportunity to encounter.”

Having classmates and a Black community that I could fully immerse myself into, who understood what I needed and when I needed it, was so important to my wellbeing. COMMITMENT TO SERVICE

Despite the remote fall semester, student-athletes and Athletics staff continued to give back and serve their respective communities.

Select service undertakings included student-athlete organized virtual 5K races (raising awareness and proceeds for targeted charitable organizations), food drives and delivery services, partnerships with local Boys and Girls Clubs and Special Olympics chapters, and voting awareness and education efforts, to name a few.

Student-Athlete Service Council (SASC) Board Member Serena Starks ’23 (softball) organized a pen pal program with the Special Olympics, matching Tiger student-athletes with Special Olympics athletes of their sport. Princeton student-athletes drafted more than 100 letters to Special Olympics athletes, offering encouragement, friendship, and sport advice during this unique time (pictured above).

The past few months as the pandemic has challenged many within the local community, Princeton Athletics has stepped up to find ways to offer help. By acting as a conduit between local organizations through Meals on Wheels and the YMCA, Princeton Athletics has provided the perfect bite sized ways for coaches and staff to help pitch in where needed.

Being able to connect with the community and share some positive energy each week has been a great opportunity that has helped energize and keep us in good spirits. It feels good to give back to a community that has given us so much.”

Princeton Softball’s New Facility (Lake Campus)

In early 2020, Cynthia Paul ’94, and her husband Scott Levy, made a landmark gift to help fund the future home of Princeton Softball, which will be part of the new Lake Campus athletics complex. Paul, a member of the 1991 Ivy League Champion softball team, cited a passion to be able to support future generations of female scholar athletes as one of her main motivations behind the gift.

Chi Family Fund for Excellence and Inclusion

Given by PVC Board Member Y.S. Chi ’83 P11 P13 and his family, this fund will support several key priorities related to excellence and inclusion, including the recruitment and retention of diverse talent, and the creation of professional education programming. Chi noted that “Princeton Athletics is about excellence, and hopefully this will help the departmental leadership continue to be able to achieve that excellence while helping to mentor and promote a spirit of inclusion.”

Princeton Women’s Lacrosse Head Coach Endowment

A generous gift by an anonymous alumna donor established the Princeton Women’s Lacrosse Head Coach Endowment, the University’s first women’s head coach endowment, in 2020. This gift was made during the 50th year of women’s athletics at Princeton in recognition of the leadership of current women’s lacrosse head coach Chris Sailer. Sailer, a US Lacrosse Hall of Fame inductee, has been at the helm of Princeton women’s lacrosse for 34 seasons, and is the first lacrosse coach to record 400 wins at a Division I institution.

Princeton Men’s Soccer Head Coach Endowment

Established in 2020, the Princeton Men’s Soccer Head Coach Endowment was given by an anonymous donor in honor of current head coach Jim Barlow ’91. Barlow, himself one of the best players in the history of Princeton men’s soccer, has been head coach of the program since 1997, and is the only person in Princeton history to have been named Ivy League Rookie of the Year, Ivy League Player of the Year and Ivy League Coach of the Year.

Princeton Women’s Basketball Head Coach Endowment

An anonymous gift established the Princeton Women’s Basketball Head Coach Endowment, the University’s second women’s head coach endowment, in 2020. This gift was inspired by a deep belief in Princeton and it’s mission, a clear understanding of the power of Princeton women’s athletics, and a desire to not only support current and future participants, but also to recognize the important contribution and legacy of past players and coaches.

TIGER ATHLETICS GIVE DAY (#TAGD)

This year’s Tiger Athletics Give Day (#TAGD) was about showing that as Tigers, we are “Stronger Together!” Thanks to the generosity of 6,026 donors, Princeton Athletics raised more than $3.2 million in support of its varsity student-athletes and teams as part of TAGD. Princeton Athletics continues to be humbled by and grateful for the incredible participation, engagement and outpouring of support from its Tiger community as part of this impactful initiative. The department could not reach its goals without the incredible support of the PVC Board of Directors, who provided more than $200,000 in bonus funds (now more than $1.3 million through seven years of TAGD).
