Prayers for all giving and receiving hospice care. May strength, calm, compassion, and rest be available to them. Prayers for all those participating in ongoing diplomatic negotiations around peace. May all sides come together, transcend their differences, and seek to elevate human flourishing as the most crucial priority.

BayardRustin(1912-1987) StrengthintheShadows
BayardRustinwasakeystrategistandorganizeroftheAmerican CivilRightsMovement,thoughhisnameisnotalwaysaswidely recognizedasothers.BorninPennsylvaniaandraisedbyhisQuaker grandparents,Rustinwasshapedearlybyafaiththatemphasized equality,nonviolence,andthedignityofeveryhumanbeing.
Rustinbecamealifelongadvocateforjustice,workingalongside leaderslikeMartinLutherKing,Jr.,andhelpingorganizethe1963 MarchonWashington.Hiscommitmenttononviolencewasdeeply influencedbybothhisChristianfaithandhisstudyofGandhian philosophy.Yetdespitehisbrillianceandleadership,Rustinoften remainedbehindthescenes.
PartofthereasonwasthatRustinwasopenlygayatatimewhen thatmadehimatargetofsuspicionandexclusion,evenwithinthe movementhehelpedlead.Heenduredcriticism,marginalization, andpressuretostepoutofthespotlightforthesakeofthecause. Andyet,hecontinuedhisworkwithhumility,courage,and unwaveringcommitment.
WeturntoRustinthisweekbecauseheremindsusthatwedonot risealone.Hislifeembodiesthetruthof1Corinthians12:thebodyis madeupofmanyparts,andeachonematters.Someleadfromthe front.Otherssustaintheworkbehindthescenes.Allareessential. Rustin’sresiliencewasnotaboutrecognitionorpersonalsuccess.It wasrootedin:
