Thesearenotperfectheroes,butrealpeoplewhofacedstruggle,uncertainty,andchallenge, anddiscoveredGod’sgraceinthemidstofit Theirstoriesremindusthatresilienceisnotabout havingitalltogether,butabouttrustingthatGodisatworkwithinus, helpingusriseintothefullnessoflife.

LoveStrongerThanFear
ÓscarRomeroservedasArchbishopofSanSalvadorduringatime ofintensepoliticalviolenceandinjusticeinElSalvador.Whenhe wasfirstappointed,manysawhimascautiousandconservative someoneunlikelytochallengethestatusquo.
Buteverythingchangedwhenhisclosefriend,apriestwho advocatedforthepoor,wasassassinated.Romerobegantolisten moredeeplytothestoriesofsufferingaroundhim,tothevoicesof thosewhowerepoor,oppressed,andsilenced.Andinlistening,he wastransformed.
Weekbyweek,throughhissermonsbroadcastacrossthecountry, Romerospokeoutagainstviolence,injustice,andtheabuseof power.Hecalledfordignity,compassion,andpeace.Hestood publiclywiththosewhoweremostvulnerable,evenasitmadehim atarget.
Romeroknewtherisks.Andyet,hecontinued.Shortlybeforehis death,hesaid:
“Iftheykillme,IwillriseagainintheSalvadoranpeople.”
Hewasassassinatedwhilepresidingatcommunion
WeturntoRomerothisweekbecauseheembodieswhatitmeans toliverootedinbelovednessandcourage.Hisresiliencedidnot comefromfearlessness,butfromadeepconvictionthathe belongedtoGodandthathislifewasgiveninloveforothers

RomeroremindsusthatwhenwearegroundedinGod’slove,wearefree tolivefully,faithfully,andcourageously.
BecauseChrist isrisen, werise.
