This year, we have honored a new set of heroes – those in the arts, the greatest minds and athletes, and those who have left their mark through extraordinary public service.

We salute those brilliant minds who are still with us and no longer here but whose contributions and legacy live on, including WNBA star Sue Wicks; singer Tony Orlando; entrepreneur, philanthropist, and investor Finn Wentworth; former ADP CEO and philanthropist Josh Weston; public servant and teacher Steve Adubato, Sr.; George Shultz, economist, businessman, diplomat, statesman, and one of only two persons to have held four different Cabinet-level posts; American painter and sculptor George Segal; and Dorothy Porter Wesley, librarian, bibliographer, and curator, and first African American to receive a library science degree from Columbia University.

Dear Friends of the New Jersey Hall of Fame: On behalf of the New Jersey Hall of Fame Board of Trustees, we extend our congratulations to the 2023 Class of Inductees!

We are excited to celebrate with you in person again after three years of virtual ceremonies. This year, we celebrate our home state’s Greatest on October 29th at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark. We are honored to showcase these legends who reached the pinnacle of their respective professions and whose contributions have left an indelible mark on our society and the world beyond.

The New Jersey Hall of Fame has also been working on several exciting projects. We anticipate opening the New Jersey Hall of Fame Entertainment and Learning Center (ELC) at American Dream in East Rutherford in Spring of 2024. Crews will be installing exhibits and attractions beginning next month.

We have also completed interviews with dozens of inductees who will be featured in the Late Night Jersey TV exhibit, where visitors will be able to interview holograms of their favorite Jersey legends.

We are also continuing to work with Governor Murphy and First Lady Tammy Murphy’s office and the New Jersey Turnpike Authority on our project to rename the nine service areas on the Garden State Parkway after New Jersey Hall of Famers. This December, the Whitney Houston and Connie Chung Service Areas, formerly Vauxhall and Brookdale South, will be officially renamed and branded. This follows the openings of the Jon Bon Jovi, Celia Cruz, Frank Sinatra, and Judy Blume Service Areas, formerly known as Cheesequake, Forked River, Atlantic City and Monmouth, respectively, the past three years.

We unveiled our latest poster installation at Newark Penn Station, which highlights greats from the City of Newark. We also honored Newark’s own Frankie Valli with a street renaming and dedication near the housing complex where he grew up.

In keeping with our commitment to inspire, educate, and motivate youth and students in our state, we are proud to highlight the next generation of New Jersey leaders. We congratulate the winners of this year’s annual New Jersey Education Association Essay Contest Who Belongs in the New Jersey Hall of Fame, Mackenzie Booker in the intermediate category and Yana Javenska in the high school category.

We also congratulate Max Druckman and Keely Balfour as the winners of the 2023 Areté Scholarship Fund, a $5,000 award granted to two graduating high school seniors each year. We are also working to create inductee and sponsor lesson plans to be introduced into New Jersey’s curriculum next fall. Our educational programs remind our children to reach their highest and best sense of self, with a moral excellence of character.

The New Jersey Hall of Fame is now poised for an exciting journey for years to come, thanks to all of you!

GEORGE SEGAL Sculptor, painter Born: November 26, 1924, in New York City Died: June 9, 2000, in South Brunswick, New Jersey George Segal didn’t just invent a new art form, he perfected it. He worked in a converted chicken coop on a Middlesex County poultry farm.

The son of Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe, Segal spent his early years in The Bronx, where his parents ran a butcher shop. The family later moved to New Jersey, where they started a poultry farm. Segal helped out on the farm, and returned to New York to study art at Pratt University , Cooper Union, and New York University, where he earned a teaching degree in 1949. During this period he began to paint and develop influential contacts in the New York art world.

While still a student, Segal met his future wife, Helen. They married and bought their own poultry farm in New Jersey, where they would live the rest of their lives. To supplement their modest income from the farm, Segal taught art and English at a local high school and at Rutgers University.

He continued to paint, and in 1957 his work was included in a major exhibition at the Jewish Museum in New York: “ Artists of the New York School: Second Generation”.

Segal was developing a reputation in New York and the art world came to his farm. In 1957, the term “ happenings” was coined to describe the art performances that happened there.

In 1961 , Segal began experimenting with the use of plaster bandages applied directly to a human body. With the help of his wife, he made body casts and assembled them into full figures set in real environments. “ Man Sitting at Table” was a turning point in the artist’s career.

He converted his chicken coop in to an art studio. Segal cast human models – friends, family, and sometimes famous individuals like Israeli diplomat Abba Eban and Norris Mailer, wife of novelist Norman Mailer. In a 2014 interview the New Jersey Monthly, Segal’s daughter , Rena Segal, describes her father’s artistic process . “Dad dipped surgical plaster bandages in warm water, placed on models .

The hardened , rough textured Segal molds became life sized figures , left in their original white.

Figures were set in real life poses : waiting for a bus or seated in a diner The environments were created using found objects, a park bench or an old chair, He cast some works in bronze or added color.

He became known as part of the pop -art movement along with Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein.

Segal’s work is warm and personal. Many of his best-known pieces are installed in public places, notably “Street Crossin”, seven standing figures outside the Alexander Kasser Theatre at Montclair University, which also is home to The George Segal gallery.

DOROTHY PORTER WESLEY Librarian, curator Born: May 25, 1905, in Warrenton, Virginia Grew Up in: Montclair, New Jersey Died: December 17, 1995, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida It’s not often a librarian can make a mark on history; Dorothy Porter Wesley found the way.

Born Dorothy Burnett, she and her three siblings grew up in Montclair. Their father (a doctor) and mother encouraged education. Dorothy attended Howard University in Washington, D.C., where she worked as a student assistant in the school’s Founders Library. At Howard, Dorothy also met her future husband, James Amos Porter, chairman of the university’s fine arts department.

Dorothy continued her education at Columbia University, earning a B.S. degree. She went on to become one of the first African American women to receive a master’s of library science from Columbia. While still completing her studies, Dorothy landed a job as a cataloger at Howard University’s Carnegie Library. Tasked with assembling a collection of literature by black Americans, she plunged into a trove of roughly 3,000 books and other documents that had been donated by Howard alumnus Jesse E. Moorland.

The Moorland collection and an additional 1,600-piece donation of anti-slavery material became the basis of the Moorland Foundation, America’s first research library devoted to the history and culture of people of African descent. With the purchase in 1946 of some 5,000 volumes amassed by collector Arthur B. Spingarn, the library was renamed the Moorland-Spingarn Research Center.

With Dorothy as curator, the center’s holdings grew to more than 180,000 items, making it one of the world’s largest repositories of materials for studying black history and culture, the New York Times reported. Her search for books and documents led Dorothy as far away as Africa and Latin America.

Finding the material was not always easy. “Over the years the main thing I had to do was beg—from publishers, authors, families,” Dorothy told the Washington Post. “Sometimes it meant being there just after the funeral director took out the bodies and saying, ‘You want all this old junk in the basement?’”

In addition to her curatorial work, Dorothy wrote numerous bibliographies of African American works, which have proved invaluable to scholars. The center itself became an essential resource for examining African American history and culture. Its collections include papers and manuscripts from civil-rights leaders and such monumental figures as Paul Robeson Jr. and singer Marian Anderson.

Dorothy’s first husband died in 1970; nine years later, she married Charles Harris Wesley, a Howard professor and authority on black history. Over the years, Dorothy (known variously as Dorothy Porter and Dorothy Porter Wesley) earned many distinctions for her groundbreaking work, including honorary doctorates from Susquehanna University and Radcliffe College. In 1988, she was named a Ford Foundation visiting fellow at the W.E.B. DuBois Institute for Afro-American Research at Harvard University. In 1994, the National Endowment for the Humanities presented her with the Charles Frankel Prize in part for helping “preserve and expand Americans’ access to important resources in the humanities.”

ENTERPRISE

FINN WENTWORTH Entrepreneur, philanthropist, sportsman Born: April 5, 1958, in Morris County, New Jersey Grew up in: Mount Tabor, New Jersey Finn Wentworth has been scaling new peaks since his days as a scholarship student at Morristown Beard School and Lehigh University. He went on to serve as a trustee of both schools, and become one of New Jersey’s most successful businessmen, as well as an extraordinarily generous philanthropist.

A lifelong New Jersey resident, Wentworth was one in a family of 10 children raised in Mount Tabor, a Methodist “camp meeting” enclave in Morris County.

After earning his marketing degree at Lehigh, Wentworth began his professional career at the Jersey-based real-estate brokerage Cushman & Wakefield. He quickly moved on to help build Lincoln Property Company and became a partner at the Sammis Company. Later, he co-founded Gale & Wentworth, which, over the next decade, grew into one of the nation’s most-active privately held real-estate investment organizations.

In 1998, Wentworth ventured into sports investing, assembling a partnership that bought the struggling New Jersey Nets basketball team. Next, he helped merge the Nets with the New York Yankees and New Jersey Devils to form a new entity, YankeeNets, where Wentworth served as COO and CEO. He also was instrumental in founding the YES Network, the most-watched regional sports network in the country. During his tenure with YankeeNets, the Yankees won two world championships, the Devils won two Stanley Cups, and the Nets twice won the NBA Eastern Conference finals.

Returning to real estate, Wentworth founded Normandy Real Estate Partners in 2003, leading a firm that managed $1.5 billion of equity capital before it was sold in 2020 to Columbia Property Trust. Currently, he is founder and partner of the Morristown-based Maple Partners, a private investment firm targeting growth opportunities.

Over the years, Wentworth has donated his time and talents to numerous organizations. He co-founded the New Jersey Pandemic Relief Fund, which raised and distributed $67 million to more than 500 New Jersey organizations. As chairman of the Foundation for Morristown Medical Center, he led a campaign that raised over $115 million; today, he serves on Atlantic Health System’s Board of Trustees. He is also a past trustee of the Geraldine Rockefeller Dodge Foundation and a trustee emeritus of the Yogi Berra Museum. He was instrumental in helping create public open space around the 1,200-acre Boonton Reservoir and is a co-founder and committee member of the Friends of Jockey Hollow, a group that seeks to maintain and improve Jockey Hollow National Historic Park. In addition, he co-founded Atlantic City Development Corporation (AC Devco), a non-profit redevelopment company serving Atlantic City.

In 1984, Finn married Kim (Turner) Wentworth, a Jersey Girl from J.P. Stevens High School and graduate of The College of New Jersey. As for scaling personal heights, Wentworth has climbed to the tops of the highest mountains in 49 of the 50 states. In 2019 and 2020, he and his sons Mark and Grant successfully summited Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania (elevation 19,341 feet) and Aconcagua in Argentina (22,838 feet), the two highest peaks in Africa and South America, respectively.

JOSH S. WESTON Businessman, philanthropist Born: December 22, 1928, in Brooklyn, New York Lives in: Montclair, New Jersey Josh Weston made his fortune in the tech-driven field of data processing, but when you process his life, it’s his humanity and generosity that shine through.

The son of Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe, Weston was born Josh Weisstein. In a 2023 interview with the Jewish Standard, he recalled living as a child in a cold-water flat in Brooklyn. The oldest of two children, he slept in the hallway. As a teen, he took a test for admission to Brooklyn Tech, an elite public high school. He passed the test—and graduated valedictorian.

Weston went on to earn a BA degree from the City College of New York and a Master of Arts in economics from the University of New Zealand, where he studied as a Fulbright Scholar. Next, he served in the U.S. Navy from 1952-53. While in the service he worked part-time as a management trainee for a small mail-order company (a predecessor to J. Crew); by the mid-1960s, he was the company’s COO. This early success put Weston on the radar of Frank Lautenberg, the CEO of Automatic Data Processing, a New Jersey-based payroll-management company. Lautenberg personally recruited Weston to join ADP as COO. In 1982, when Lautenberg left ADP to serve as U.S. senator from New Jersey, Weston succeeded him as CEO. Weston served as ADP’s top executive for 15 years, retiring in 1998. During his ADP leadership tenure, the company reported 164 consecutive quarters of double-digit growth in both revenue and earnings per share, an achievement believed to be unmatched by any other publicly reporting company.

Retirement allowed Weston and his wife, Judy, to dedicate themselves to philanthropy. Their generosity stretched from their adopted hometown of Montclair, where they supported local education initiatives, to the state, national, and international level, with a special focus on education, science, and the arts.

Over the years, Weston has actively engaged with and supported prominent organizations such as Liberty Science Center, American Museum of Natural History, and FIRST Robotics, and has championed respected institutions, including the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC), the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, Mountainside Hospital, the Montclair Film Festival, and the National Dance Institute.

Always a hands-on leader, Weston has served on many non-profit boards, including Liberty Science Center, PBS NJ, NJPAC, New Jersey Community Food Bank, the International Rescue Committee, Tel Aviv Foundation, Safe Water Network, and the Seeing Eye. He also has served on government commissions, including the President’s Task Force to Improve Veterans’ Healthcare and the National Commission to Restructure the Internal Revenue Service. Weston also has designed and launched his own personal programs that support those in his local community, including students, educators, and refugees.

“If you are fortunate as I have been to achieve success in business, then it is my strong belief that giving back to help people who are less fortunate and working to improve society are important obligations,” says Weston. “By embracing a spirit of curiosity and generosity in life I am rewarded with a sense of accomplishment each time I see positive outcomes. And, I’m gratified that the next two generations of Westons have all adopted the spirit of giving that Judy and I shared.”

TIKI BARBER Football star, broadcaster, entrepreneur Born: April 7, 1975, in Roanoke, Virginia Over a 10-year career as a running back with the New York Giants, Tiki Barber’s legs carried him to a franchise record 10,449 career rushing yards—the equivalent of more than 100 football fields.

Born Attim Kiambu Barber, Tiki and his twin brother, Ronde, were destined to play in the National Football League. Their father, James Barber, was a star running back at Virginia Tech from 1971-73 and later played in the now-defunct World Football League.

James Barber and the twins’ mother, Geraldine, divorced when the boys were four. Thereafter, Geraldine raised the twins and their older brother, working as many as three jobs to support her boys. Under Geraldine’s guiding hand, Tiki developed a strong work ethic and a love for sports. In high school, he excelled in football and also won a district title in wrestling and three long-jump state championships. He was an academic standout, too, graduating as class valedictorian with a 4.0 average.

Tiki and Ronde both attended the University of Virginia on athletic scholarships, with Tiki majoring in commerce. During his junior year, Tiki, a running back, rushed for almost 1,400 yards and helped lead his team to a share of the Atlantic Coast Conference title. The following season, he topped 1,300 yards and was named ACC Player of the Year.

Drawn by Tiki’s speed and pass-catching ability, the New York Giants selected him in the second round of the 1997 NFL draft. (Ronde, a cornerback, went to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the following round.) Used sparingly in his first few seasons as a pro, Tiki fulfilled his promise in 2000, surpassing 1,000 yards rushing and helping the Giants reach the Super Bowl. (The Giants lost 34-7 to the Baltimore Ravens; it turned out to be Tiki’s only trip to the big game.)

Tiki rushed for more than 1,000 yards in five of the next six seasons for the Giants, including a career-high 1,860 yards in 2005—a Giants’ season record. The following year, during a season in which he would rush for 1,662 yards, Barber announced his intention to retire. He departed the Giants with at least 22 franchise records, including most career rushing yards; most career allpurpose yards (17,359, including punt returns); and most career 100+ yard rushing games (40). In 2010, he was chosen an inaugural member of the Giants’ Ring of Honor.

After retiring, Tiki landed a broadcast job at NBC, where contributed to the “Today” show and “Football Night in America.” Currently, the longtime Florham Park resident is co-host of the “Evan & Tiki” drive-time show on New York radio station WFAN. He also hosts a sports radio show for Audacy (formerly CBS Sports Radio) and is a game-time NFL analyst for CBS Sports. He has also worked at the YES Network and Fox News; made numerous TV guest appearances; and in 2008, helped broadcast the Beijing Olympics for MSNBC. As an entrepreneur, Tiki co-founded Julius Inc., an influencer-marketing platform, and Thuzio, a networking and content company specializing in live events. His philanthropic endeavors include United for A.L.I.C.E., a United Way of Northern New Jersey program that helps families with financial struggles.

SUE WICKS Collegiate and pro basketball star Born: November 26, 1966, in Center Moriches, New York Attended: Rutgers University Sue Wicks spent much of her childhood on the water, but as a collegian and an adult, she gained fame on the hardwood.

Growing up on Long Island, she often was on the ocean with her fisherman father. As she grew older her talent for athletics became clear. She enrolled at Rutgers University in 1984 and became the star of the women’s basketball varsity, racking up an unparalleled series of honors.

Named the second greatest athlete in Rutgers history behind Paul Robeson, Wicks is the most highly decorated player in the history of Scarlet Knight basketball. A three-time Kodak AllAmerican (from 1986-88), Wicks was named U.S. Basketball Writers Association National Player of the Year in 1987; the following year she won the Naismith Award as the nation’s best collegiate player.

As of 2023, Wicks still owns RU career records for points, rebounds, scoring average, rebounding average, field goals made and attempted, free throws made and attempted, and blocked shots.

Her scoring and rebounding totals are records in both the men’s and women’s history books. From 1986-88, Wicks led Rutgers to a 105-21 record and three Atlantic-10 Tournament titles. Each of those seasons, she was conference player of the year and Atlantic-10 Tournament MVP. In 1987, Wicks earned a gold medal at the Pan-American Games. In the years after playing for RU, she competed professionally in Italy, Japan, Spain, Turkey, Hungary, France, and Israel. When the WNBA was formed in 1997, Wicks was a first-round selection (sixth overall) for the New York Liberty. During her six seasons with the team, the Liberty won four Eastern Conference titles.

Wicks, a 2000 WNBA All-Star, served as the Liberty’s captain and star defender. She finished her career as the team’s all-time leader in blocked shots and rebounds.

After retiring as a pro, Wicks formed an all-girls basketball camp in New York and served as coordinator of operations for the Rutgers women’s basketball team. In 2005, she was named assistant coach of the RU team. The same year, she was inducted into the university’s Hall of Distinguished Alumni. She previously had been inducted into RU’s Basketball Hall of Fame.

Wicks is also notable for her pioneering candor on sexual orientation. In 2002, she came out as gay, the first player to do so in the WNBA. Since 2012, Wicks has been a sports ambassador for the U.S. State Department. She’s also back on the water. In 2017, she followed a family tradition and started an oyster-farming business on Long Island.

STEVE ADUBATO SR. Politician, teacher Born: December 24, 1932, in Newark, New Jersey Died: October 13, 2020 He was known as “Big Steve,” but Steve Adubato Sr. was not a particularly large man. Rather, his “bigness” was measured in his influence over politics, education and social services in Newark—the city to which he dedicated much of his substantial energy.

Adubato’s childhood in Newark was not easy. One of five children, he grew up in a tenement on Factory Street. His father, an educated man, ran a gas station to eke out a living during the Depression. He died of heart disease at the age of 44, leaving his wife to raise five kids.

After graduation from Barrington High School, Adubato worked his way through college, earning a bachelor’s degree at Seton Hall University. Following a stint in the Army, he started his career as a social-studies teacher, took a stab at law school, then returned to Seton Hall for his master’s degree in political science. He made his first foray into politics in 1962, winning a spot as a Democratic district leader. “I found out I was a natural,” he told New Jersey Monthly in 2009.

Even as riots roiled Newark in 1967, Adubato stayed put, earning the loyalty of blacks and Hispanics in the North Ward. By 1968, he was elected North Ward party chairman. Two years later, he boldly supported the candidacy of Ken Gibson, who was running to become the first African American mayor of Newark. Gibson won–and his administration subsequently provided Adubato with the backing to help launch the North Ward Center.

The North Ward Center became Adubato’s seat of power and a prized community institution.

In time, the non-profit, based in a fortress-like 19-century mansion on Mount Prospect Avenue, would operate a pre-school; a job-training and language-training center; an adult medical day care center; youth recreation programs; a day program for young adults on the autism spectrum; and Adubato’s crown jewel, the Robert Treat Academy, an award-winning charter school.

The Robert Treat Academy, one of the first charter schools in New Jersey, became a source of great pride for Adubato. Serving students K-8, the school is renowned for putting kids on the road to a quality higher education; it was named a Blue Ribbon School in 2008 by the U.S. Department of Education.

Adubato was a complicated man, beloved by the North Ward kids who dubbed him “Big Steve,” but feared by his political foes. He nurtured the careers of several of today’s most prominent Essex County political figures, but quashed the careers of others.

The street-tough Adubato never hesitated to speak his mind, often in ways that might be considered politically incorrect. “Anybody who sits across from Steve knows his biases are equally applied to all, from Italians, to Polish, to blacks, to Latinos,” Senator Cory Booker told New Jersey Monthly. “That’s what’s redeeming about him.”

CHARLES EDISON Politician, businessman, philanthropist Born: August 3, 1890, in West Orange, New Jersey Died: July 31, 1969, in New York City The best-known and most-accomplished of Thomas Edison’s six children, Charles Edison began his career in the family business, but then invented a life of his own.

Charles was Thomas Edison’s fifth child and second from his marriage to Mina Miller. He attended Massachusetts Institute of Technology, earning a degree in electrical engineering in 1913. He went to work at the Edison Illuminating Company, an operation created by his father to construct electrical generating stations in major cities, initially New York.

The younger Edison rose through the ranks to become manager of the Edison Phonograph Company and the Edison Storage Battery Company. By 1916, at the age of 26, Charles was appointed chairman of all the Edison-related industries. Ten years later, he assumed the presidency of Thomas A. Edison Inc. He ran the company until its merger with McGraw Electric in 1957, after which he served as chairman of the newly merged company until his retirement in 1961.

Edison began his parallel career in public service when President Franklin Roosevelt appointed him as a member of the Depression-era New Jersey State Recovery Board. He also served as state director of the National Emergency Council; as a member of the National Industrial Recovery Board; and as a regional director of the Federal Housing Administration.

In 1937, Roosevelt chose Edison as assistant secretary of the Navy, a position once occupied by Roosevelt himself. Edison was elevated to secretary of the Navy in 1940, serving briefly until resigning to run for governor of New Jersey. Breaking with family tradition, he ran as a Democrat.

During his single term as governor from 1941-1945, Edison worked to update the state constitution. Voters rejected his plan in a referendum, but his proposal would inspire the state’s passage of a modern constitution before the decade was out. That document is still in place.

Edison’s advocacy for large Iowa-class battleships while with the Navy department led to the construction of the USS New Jersey at the Philadelphia Navy Yard. The New Jersey was christened in 1943 by Edison’s wife, Carolyn; after decades of valuable service around the globe, the battleship was decommissioned in 1991 and now resides on the Camden waterfront where it lives on as a floating museum.

Moving on from politics, Edison established the Charles Edison Fund (originally called the Brook Foundation) in 1948. The fund was created to support the legacy of Edison’s father, and to encourage innovations in medical research, science, technology and historic preservation.

Later in life, Edison was one of the founders of the Conservative Party in New York State, and founded the Charles Edison Youth Fund, now the Fund for American Studies, which promotes the ideals of liberty, limited government and free markets.

GEORGE SHULTZ Economist, businessman, statesman Born: December 13, 1920, in New York City Died: February 6, 2021, in Stanford, California Grew up in: Englewood, New Jersey Having served in four cabinet posts under two Republican presidents, George Shultz can rightfully be credited with crafting much of U.S. foreign and domestic policy in the latter decades of the 20th century. And despite his consistent adherence to conservativism, he is also noted for his advocacy of such progressive policies as racial quotas to force integration; the normalizing of relations with Cuba; and the establishment of a revenue-neutral carbon tax to combat climate change.

Shultz was raised in Englewood and for several years attended Englewood School for Boys (now Dwight-Englewood School). In 1942, he graduated with honors from Princeton University, where he studied economics, with a minor in public and international affairs. He joined the Marine Corps in 1942, serving in the Pacific and attaining the rank of captain.

After the war, Shultz earned a PhD. in industrial economics from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he taught for almost a decade, with a leave of absence to serve on President Dwight Eisenhower’s Council of Economic Advisors. He next joined the faculty of the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business.

In 1969, newly elected President Richard M. Nixon appointed Shultz as secretary of labor. It was in this, his first cabinet post, that Shultz introduced racial hiring quotas in federal construction projects. In 1970, he was named director of the new Office of Management and Budget; in 1972, Nixon chose Shultz as treasury secretary. In both cabinet-level positions he helped formulate the Nixon Administration’s economic policies, primarily focusing on curbing inflation via wage and price freezes.

Shultz left public service in 1973 to become a senior executive at Bechtel Corp., a giant, California-based engineering firm. He also taught at Stanford University. Shultz remained in the private sector until 1982, when President Ronald Reagan appointed him secretary of state.

Known as a pragmatist, Shultz as secretary of state promoted peace in the Middle East and Latin America, while calling for action against terrorism in Beirut and other global hot spots. He also managed tricky relationships with China and the Soviet Union in a period marked by growing concern over disputed territories and nuclear proliferation. His shepherding of the IntermediateRange Nuclear Forces Treaty with the Soviets in 1987 helped ease Cold War tensions.

After leaving the White House in 1989 (the year he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom), Shultz remained a leading conservative thinker, although his occasional progressive positions may have surprised many. In 2008, he characterized the ongoing U.S. sanctions against Cuba as “ridiculous.” He also advocated for further nuclear arms control and repeatedly promoted the idea of a tax on carbon-dioxide emissions in light of his acknowledgement of climate change.

DAVID CHASE TV writer/producer and filmmaker Born: August 22, 1945, in Mount Vernon, New York Grew up in: Clifton and North Caldwell, New Jersey David Chase has produced, written, and directed critically acclaimed television shows such as influential Peabody Award-winning HBO drama series The Sopranos. The Sopranos, which he created, is the most financially successful series in the history of cable television and is acknowledged as one of the greatest television series of all time. Chase’s directorial feature film debut, Not Fade Away, was selected as the centerpiece of the 50th NEW YORK FILM FESTIVAL in 2012. The film was a music-driven coming of age story set in suburbia in the ‘60s and was released in by Paramount Pictures in December 2012.

Chase was born in Mt. Vernon, New York and raised in New Jersey. He studied at New York University and received a graduate degree in film from Stanford University.

Chase began writing for network television and eventually became a writer and producer on the classic NBC show The Rockford Files. In 1978, he won his first Emmy when the show was named Outstanding Dramatic Series. In 1980, Chase earned his second Emmy, this time for Outstanding Writing in a Movie for Television, the acclaimed Off the Minnesota Strip. He also received the Writers Guild of America Award for that film.

Chase first directed a self-penned episode of the ‘80s incarnation of Alfred Hitchcock Presents.

He continued writing, directing, and producing, garnering further Emmy nominations for Outstanding Drama Series with Northern Exposure and the civil rights drama I’ll Fly Away.

Inspired by William Wellman’s The Public Enemy and his early years in New Jersey, Chase created and developed the HBO series The Sopranos. The show, which premiered January 10, 1999, is recognized as a phenomenon in American television and popular culture, winning a multitude of awards, 21 Emmys and five Golden Globes among them.

The Many Saints of Newark, Chase’s highly anticipated film prequel to The Sopranos, was released

by Warner Bros. in October 2021. In 2023, he was inducted into The New Jersey Hall of Fame.

TONY ORLANDO Pop singer and TV personality Born: April 3, 1944, in New York City Grew Up in: Union City and Hasbrouck Heights, New Jersey Tony Orlando has sported many hats in his long entertainment career, but he is best-known for a yellow ribbon.

Born Michael Anthony Orlando Cassavitis, the future star is the son of a Greek father and a Puerto Rican mother. As a youth growing up in Manhattan, Orlando gravitated toward doo-wop singing, rather than falling under the sway of the street gangs in his tough Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood. Eventually, his family moved to Union City and later Hasbrouck Heights.

As a young teen, Orlando recorded some tracks with a doo-wop group called the Five Gents.

According to musicologist Fred Bronson in “The Billboard Book of Number One Hits,” the famed producer Don Kirshner heard the tapes and hired Orlando to sing demos and write songs, teaming him with future legend Carole King. One of their demos, “Halfway to Paradise,” became Orlando’s first hit, reaching No. 39 on the Billboard singles chart in 1961. A follow-up, “Bless You,” went all the way to No. 15.

Unfortunately, teen stardom was fleeting. By the time he was 24, with no more hits to speak of, Orlando took a job in music publishing. This gave him the opportunity to work with such songwriters as Barry Manilow, James Taylor and Laura Nyro. Orlando got back to recording when producers Hank Medress and Dave Appell asked him to perform the lead vocal on “Candida,” a track by a group called Dawn. It became a surprise international hit, soaring to No. 3 on the U.S. singles chart in July 1970.

The success of “Candida” spurred a follow-up, “Knock Three Times,” again with Orlando as lead vocalist. This time, Dawn went to No. 1 and Orlando became an official member, along with singers Telma Hopkins and Joyce Vincent Wilson. After a series of not-so-successful releases, Dawn rebounded with the feel-good 1973 single “Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree.”

The inspirational story of a man coming home from prison to find his true love had waited for him, “Yellow Ribbon” spent four weeks at No. 1 on the U.S. singles chart. In early 1980, the song had a huge revival as the rallying cry when the American hostages came home from Iran.

The group—officially renamed Tony Orlando and Dawn—reached No. 1 again in 1975 with “He Don’t Love You (Like I Love You).” By this time, Orlando had landed his own variety TV program, “The Tony Orlando and Dawn Show,” which ran on CBS from 1973-77. In the ensuing decades, Orlando appeared in films, on numerous TV shows, and on Broadway in the title role of “Barnum.”

He also has continued to record and tour with Dawn and became a major attraction in Las Vegas and Branson, Missouri, where he had his own theater.

Orlando is the recipient of the Bob Hope Award for excellence in entertainment from the Congressional Medal of Honor Society, recognizing his tireless efforts on behalf of our nation’s veterans. He also is the perennial host of the Congressional Medal of Honor dinner in Dallas. He serves on the board of directors for the Eisenhower Foundation as well as the Tribute to Valor Foundation, an organization that aims to inspire young people.

PATTI SCIALFA Singer, songwriter, guitarist Born: July 29, 1953, in Long Branch, New Jersey Lives in: Colts Neck, New Jersey Patti Scialfa is an American singer-songwriter. Scialfa has been a member of The E Street Band since 1984 and has been married to Bruce Springsteen since 1991. Together they have raised three children, Evan James, Jessica Rae and Sam Ryan. Sam is now married to Alex Reph and has graced them with a darling granddaughter, Lily Harper.

Born in Monmouth County, New Jersey, Patti began writing her own songs from an early age. She studied jazz, composition, music theory and voice at the Frost School of Music - Jazz Conservatory in Miami, as the program’s only female musician at the time. She finished her degree at New York University’s Gallatin School of Individualized Study.

In New York City she assembled a band to play her own original music. They played at venues such as Folk City, Trax, Tramps, Kenny’s Castaways, and The Bitter End. With Soozie Tyrell and Lisa Lowell (who are now working with the E Street Band), they formed a trio called Trickster, named for the Jungian archetype, Trickster, which represents part of the collective unconscious.

The trio was formed to experience the romance of busking. They played on street corners such as Christopher & Bedford, where Edna St Vincent Millay once lived.

At this time, Scialfa had worked and sung with such artists as Don Cherry and multi-platinum Grammy and Emmy-winning producer Narda Michael Walden, as well as David Sancious’ band Tone, David Johansen of The New York Dolls, and Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes.

In June 1984, Bruce Springsteen asked Patti to join the E Street Band for The Born In The USA Tour. In 1988, she appeared on Keith Richards’ debut solo album Talk Is Cheap working with Don Covay, Bobby Womack, Ivan Neville and Steve Jordan. For the Rolling Stones, she performed vocals on their album, Dirty Work.

In 1993, she released her first solo album, Rumble Doll, co-produced by Scialfa and Mike Campbell of The Heartbreakers. The album included the song “Valerie” which was later covered by Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris on their Western Wall - The Tucson Sessions album released in 1999. The song “Spanish Dancer,” also from her first record, was covered by Emmylou Harris and Rodney Crowell on their Old Yellow Moon album, released in 2013. Scialfa’s songs have also been featured in a number of television series and movies, such as “This is Us”, “Ugly Betty,” “Joan of Arcadia” and “Judging Amy.” Additionally she has several songs featured in Bobby Roth’s films, “Manhood,” and “Pearl” and Ed Burns’ film, “No Looking Back.”

Patti’s second album, 23rd Street Lullaby followed in 2004 which she co-produced with Steve Jordan.

She followed with a six-week tour in theaters and clubs around the country. In 2007, Patti co-produced her third album, Play It As It Lays with Steve Jordan and Ron Aniello.

“Springsteen On Broadway” opened at the Walter Kerr Theatre in New York City in October 2017 and continued for a 20-month residency. Patti’s nightly duets with Springsteen on “Tougher Than The Rest” and “Brilliant Disguise” were often referred to as one of the highlights of the evening’s performance.

Patti continues to contribute to a variety of projects. She wrote “Children’s Song” for the charity album Every Mother Counts and performed “Linda Paloma” with Springsteen on Looking Into You: A Tribute To Jackson Browne. Patti also has lent her vocals to Emmylou Harris’s Red Dirt Girl and two Dion albums: Blues With Friends and Stomping Ground. Additionally, Patti sang on two songs from Lucinda Williams’ new album Stories From a Rock n Roll Heart, including the first single, “New York Comeback.” Most recently, Scialfa sang harmonies on the original song “Addicted To Romance” for Rebecca Miller’s film “She Came To Me.” Patti’s interest in social issues led her to executive produce the documentary, “Shelter Me: Soul Awakened” about reducing recidivism in prisons, and won her an Emmy in 2021. The program features the Paws for Life program where incarcerated men train overlooked shelter dogs to become service animals and led to the commutations of more than 20 life sentences.

Patti was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with The E Street Band in 2014 and has just finished her fourth album, which will be released in 2024.

HEROES ANNA DIAZ-WHITE On a typical day, New Jersey’s domestic violence hotlines receive about 20,000 calls, approximately 13 every minute. Leading the way in ensuring every one of those calls are answered in Monmouth County, New Jersey, is Anna Diaz-White, Executive Director of 180 Turning Lives Around. The Hazlet-based non-profit provides survivors of domestic and sexual violence and their families free and confidential programs and resources to process and heal from their experiences. Comprehensive support services include 24/7 hotlines, counseling, legal advocacy, and emergency shelter, as well as art and music therapy for children.

Anna has been at the helm of this effort to offer hope and support to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault at 180 Turning Lives Around for 40 years, 32 of them as Executive Director.

Under Anna’s leadership, the organization has developed a state-of-the art, comprehensive approach to support survivors and their children. In her 40-year tenure at 180, Anna has developed innovative projects, including transitional housing and rapid re-housing for homeless domestic violence survivors. She also established the Family Justice Center, which provides a one-stop shop of social, civil, and legal services and infused the organization with trauma-informed service delivery.

Anna is grateful to the NJ Hall of Fame committee members for this prestigious recognition and congratulates the honorees and the unsung heroes everywhere working to make New Jersey and the world a better place.

For all her efforts to support victims of domestic violence and create a pathway to safety, healing, and independence, Anna Diaz-White is one of the New Jersey Hall of Fame’s 2023 Unsung Heroes.

HEROES MICHAEL FUX Rising from humble beginnings in Cuba to becoming CEO of Imaginarium and Co., Michael Fux knows firsthand what it’s like to work to overcome hardships.

When Michael, his mother, and his brother migrated to Newark, NJ, from Cuba in 1958, he was just 15 years old and didn’t speak a word of English.

Michael went on to attend Weequahic High School and graduated from Central Evening High School in Newark. His first job was pumping gas at a station in Newark for $1 per hour. Michael’s entrepreneurial passion began soon thereafter when he started his first business at the age of 18, selling used tires and batteries from a single-car garage in Newark.

Through hard work and ambition, Michael founded very successful companies in the home furnishings industry. Still, he never forgot where he came from and is passionate about doing everything he can to help underprivileged and less fortunate children and their families.

Throughout his career, he remained in New Jersey, creating jobs and businesses in the State.

Throughout the years, Michael has and continues to support many charities within the State of New Jersey: Children’s Specialized Hospital Foundation, Count Basie Theatre Foundation, Eatontown Police Department, Children’s Specialized Hospital Foundation, Count Basie Theatre Foundation, Del Val Wrestlers in Holland Township, Eatontown Police Department, Hurricane Sandy NJ Relief, Logan James Parker Fund, Make-a-Wish Foundation of Central NJ, Mark Castellano Children’s Fund, Monmouth County Chief’s Association, Monmouth Medical Center Foundation, Monmouth County, BSA, Nassan’s Place (for Autism Awareness), Newark Now, New Jersey Heroes, Ocean of Love, Red Bank Police Department K9 Trust Fund, Red Bank PBA Local 39, Ronald McDonald House – New Jersey, West Long Branch Police Department, Tigger House Foundation, Troopers Memorial Fund, and many more charities.

And you’ll be able to interview holograms of Danny DeVito, Jason Alexander, Connie Chung, Laurie Hernandez and many more notable Jersey greats in the Late Night Jersey Television Studio.

Soon New Jersey will be one of the only states in America that has a Hall of Fame, showcasing our state’s best from all walks of life.
