Technology Classes at Princeton Public Library

T E H C classes at Princeton Public Library and taught by library staff for Princeton Adult School FALL 2011

FALL 2011 TECHNOLOGY CENTER CLASSES All classes are taught by Princeton Public Library staff, except where indicated.

Registration is required and may be completed online at www.princetonlibrary.org (click on the Events tab) or by calling 609.924.9529, ext. 220. Classes are in the second floor Technology Center.

Skill Levels Basic: User knows how to turn on computer, operate a mouse, knows how to launch software.

Intermediate: In addition to basic skill level, user can navigate various websites, multiple tabs, understand email applications, can download documents, music and photos.

GOOGLE + Wed., Sept. 14, 4-6 p.m.

With Google+ becoming a major social networking platform within weeks of its release, it’s clear that the social Web is here to stay. This Google+ class, led by Lynette Young of Purple Stripe Productions, will provide tips and tricks that you can use to make the most of Google+ features such as Profiles, Hangouts, Circles and Sparks. Skill Level: Intermediate INTRO TO COMPUTERS Mon., Sept. 19, 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., (first of two classes) This is a two-week class to help novices become comfortable with the basic terminology, concepts and skills of using a computer. Skill Level: None LIST MAKING FOR JOB SEEKERS Tues., Sept. 20, 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

The first of three related courses, this class will cover how to use databases such as Reference USA, Infogroup OneSource and Hoovers to create lists of job leads, names of personnel and other key data needed for a job search. Learn tools useful for job searching, get company profiles and discover business opportunities in this one-hour course. This series of courses will be offered following each Tuesday Networking Breakfast. Skill Level: Basic INTRODUCTION TO EXCEL 2007 Wed., Sept. 21, 6-8 p.m., (first of three classes) Learn how to use the powerful features of Excel 2007 to collect, manipulate and report data.

Good mouse skills are essential. Skill Level: Basic INTRO TO COMPUTERS Mon., Sept. 26, 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., (second of two classes) GOOGLE FORMS Wed., Sept. 28, 4-5:30 p.m.

This class covers the often-overlooked Google Forms application that allows anyone with a Google account to quickly and easily create surveys and have the results tabulated in a spreadsheet for easy gathering and sorting of data. Google Forms can also be used to collect a variety of statistical information, create a personal contacts list and much more. Skill Level: Intermediate

INTRODUCTION TO EXCEL 2007 Wed., Sept. 28, 6-8 p.m. (second of three classes) LEARN ALL ABOUT AVIARY.COM Tues., Oct. 4, 3-4:30 p.m., (first of three classes) John LeMasney, manager of educational technology training and outreach at Princeton University, introduces Aviary, a suite of online creative applications accessible through your web browser. Aviary tools enhance the creativity of artists of all genres, from graphic design to audio editing. In this 3-part class you will learn about the Aviary Image and Effects editors, Music Creator, Podcasting editor and more. All of these tools can be used online, for free, with no downloads needed.

Skill Level: Intermediate INTRODUCTION TO EXCEL 2007 Wed., Oct. 5, 6-8 p.m., (third of three classes) BE YOUR OWN TRAVEL AGENT Thursday Oct. 6, 6-7 p.m.

Learn how to get the best bang for your buck when you are booking travel as well as some tips, tricks and general rules about booking online travel. Skill Level: Basic INTERNET EXPLORATIONS Mon., Oct. 10, 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., (first of two classes) This course will help novice computer users become familiar with searching the Internet. Basic terminology will be covered, as well as basic search strategies. Attendees should be comfortable navigating with a mouse. Skill Level: Basic

Podcasting expert Lynette Young of Purple Stripe Productions discusses the basics of podcasting and how to get started.

Spread the News: PR Tips for Small Businesses and Non-profits Tues., Oct. 11, 6:30-8:30 p.m.

Advertising and marketing are essential for getting a business noticed, but can be expensive. Hilary Morris of Hilary Morris Public Relations covers the basics of getting free publicity including press release writing and strategies for connecting with the local media. Skill Level: Intermediate INTERNET EXPLORATIONS Mon., Oct. 17, 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., (second of two classes)

DATABASES FOR JOB SEEKERS Tues., Oct. 18, 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Second in the series of computer courses following Tuesday Networking Breakfasts. Librarian Jane Brown explains two specialty databases available to library cardholders: Job and Career Accelerator and Career Transitions via Jersey Clicks.

This class explores websites, blogs and apps pertaining to interior design, do-it-yourself projects and all things that make a house a home. Skill Level: Basic iPAD 101 Mon., Oct. 24, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

For those with a new iPad or who just want to see what the hype is all about, this class covers what the device can do, its basic operation and some fun apps. Skill Level: Basic INTRODUCTION TO WORD 2007 Tues., Nov. 8, 2-4 p.m., (first of three classes) Learn how to use the word processing features of Word 2007 to create and modify documents such as memos, letters and reports. Good mouse skills are essential. CREATE GREAT PHOTO GREETINGS Wed., Nov. 9, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. (first of two classes) This two-session class will enable you to easily create memorable and fun holiday greeting cards using online Shutterfly or TinyPrints. Please provide a working email address and a minimum of five print or digital photos. Skill Level: Basic BE YOUR OWN DJ Wed., Nov. 9, 3-4:30 p.m., (first of two classes) John LeMasney, manager for Educational Technology Training and Outreach at Princeton University, explores the multitude of options that exist for streaming music live online. In this two-part class you will learn a variety of ways to access and stream music – and customize it to your own taste. No iPod needed. Learn how to use the powerful databases such as Factiva and Business Source Premier to do research about companies and prepare for job interviews. Princeton Public Library Staff Learn how you can read or listen to popular fiction and non-fiction books from your home computer, eReader, portable MP3 player, iPod or smartphone. This class will cover all the steps needed to download eAudiobooks and eBooks from Princeton Public Library’s two subscription services including ListenNJ, a statewide service available at most libraries. It is recommended that students bring in an MP3 player or iPod to practice with appropriate cables. $25. Skill Level: Basic Princeton High School TWITTER 101: TWEETING FOR BEGINNERS Thurs., Oct. 27, 7-9 p.m.

Princeton Public Library Staff This class is an overview of Twitter and how it can be used to track breaking news, keep up-to-date with technology, find a job or even get a free cup of coffee. Participants will have the opportunity to create their own Twitter account during one of three follow-up sessions to be held in the Princeton Public Library’s Technology Center. $25.

Princeton Public Library Technology Center CREATE YOUR OWN 2012 CALENDAR Thurs., Nov. 10, 1-3 p.m., (first of two classes) Princeton Public Library Staff Step by step, this class covers the process of creating a customized 2012 calendar using Microsoft PowerPoint and your own digital photographs. Katie DeVito This course covers the basics of LinkedIn including how to set up an account, build a profile, build a network and find job leads.

NOTE: This is a two-hour course taught at Princeton Public Library. Additional help sessions will be determined at the Nov. 15 class for those who want more support on additional dates at Princeton Public Library.

Katie DeVito founded NJ Unemployed, a networking group dedicated to bringing the unemployed community together by holding educational seminars, and social events. She has appeared on CBS’s “The Early Show,” and other shows discussing unemployment, social media and starting your own business. $25.
