2019 Report to the Community Princeton Public Library

THE YEA R OF THE WRITER

In 2019, Princeton Public Library hosted more than 170 writers, from acclaimed, best-selling authors and rising stars of the literary world to local residents pursuing their dreams through self-publishing. Writers of every genre, and for every age, appeared at public sessions at the library or at partner venues. They talked about their lives, the process of writing and their fields of specialty before rapt and grateful audiences who had the chance to chat afterward and get signed copies of their work. Several of these many special moments are captured in this Report to the Community. FROM THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES

aving lived here for many years, my husband, Bill, and I have had the pleasure of meeting many of the great writers who call Princeton home. I never tire of meeting an author and learning something new about how and why they are compelled to write. As such, I am ever grateful to our fabulous library for bringing so many talented writers to town.

At the 2019 Beyond Words benefit, sponsored by the Friends of the Library, I experienced the best of both of my literary worlds. I was transfixed by the conversation between the English novelist, essayist and short-story writer Zadie Smith and Princeton’s own Tracy K. Smith, then finishing up her second year as poet laureate of the United States. Listening to these two extraordinary writers, who come from different backgrounds and work in different genre, I felt as if I were eavesdropping on a fascinating conversation between two new friends in a café. It struck me that what brought these two women together were some of the foundations of our great library: words (written and spoken) and how they inspire greater understanding. When I learned this year’s annual report would focus on writers — I was stunned to hear the number was more than 160 — I felt grateful to live in a community where authors are celebrated every day, a community whose generous private gifts make great programming possible. Thank you for your support. Pam Wakefield President, Princeton Public Library Board of Trustees 3
