W

hen public libraries are contemplating an extraordinary leap forward, like the reimagined second floor the Princeton Public Library introduced at the end of March 2017, we are confronted with a standard series of questions: Do people still read books? What can I get at the library that I can’t get on Google? Is it worth investing in a public library? Conveniently, we can find answers to these questions by looking back 10 and 20 years. In 1997, the library was in its previous building, there was no Hinds Plaza or Spring Street Garage, and Google was still a year away from being incorporated. Efforts had been underway for several years to bring Princeton Borough, Princeton Township, and private donors together to fund a new building. Those leading the efforts ran into the familiar questions: Isn’t what we have good enough? With the Information Superhighway making headlines, why invest in an antiquated old library? The library had about 128,000 volumes, circulated about 12 items per resident, offered 311 classes, lectures, and events, with a total attendance of 5,701 attendees. A few years later, Princeton took a leap of faith, and the new library opened on April 24, 2004. By 2007, the new Sands Building was three years old, the library’s print and digital collection included about 181,000 titles, and Princeton residents borrowed about 18 items per year. The library also offered 1,718 classes, lectures, and events, with a total attendance of 46,259. Community members who had openly wondered about investing in a new building, or who thought the library should remain in the Princeton Shopping Center (its temporary location during the construction of the Sands Building), declared grateful mea culpas, while others pointedly wondered if these amazing new Amazon Kindles, which were first released just before Black Friday 2007, would lead to the library’s obsolescence. In 2017, despite a slow start because the second floor was closed to the public for the first three months of the year, the library’s almost 760,000-volume print and digital collection (a more than fourfold increased vs. 2007) continued to be borrowed by cardholders at an average of 18 items per year. In addition, the library’s 2,280 classes, lectures, and events had a total attendance of 66,434 (an increase of just over 50 percent). The reimagined second floor led to an immediate increase in the circulation for the beautifully shelved and more easily discoverable adult nonfiction collection, and the second floor’s study rooms, Quiet Room, Discovery Center, Technology Center and other spaces were immediately full. Our community has made a thoughtful, successful investment in Princeton Public Library’s collections, physical space, classes and lectures and events, with roughly 75 percent funded by municipal taxpayers and another 25 percent coming from private donations, the endowment and other private sources. While our world offers an ever-increasing number of ways to learn, entertain ourselves, and gather, the library continues to grow increasingly appealing to the members of our community, and continues to merit not only the fiscal investments that enable it to succeed, it also continues to merit an even more precious resource: our time.

2017 IN

M

arch 25, 2017 will go down as a significant milestone in the rich history of Princeton Public Library. When Mayor Liz Lempert cut the ribbon on a reimagined second floor, the opening represented not only Princeton’s ongoing commitment to first-rate library services but it reflected a forward-focused organization responding to both the changing needs of its community and the ongoing evolution of what it means to be a public library. Hailed for its innovative design, which balances Princeton’s everlasting love of physical books with the needs of the 21st century library user, the new second floor contains dedicated spaces for quiet reading, collaborative study, technology instruction and community meetings. The reimaging extended to the collection, which arranged nonfiction books — Princeton is unusual among public libraries for the popularity of nonfiction — in “neighborhoods,” a hybrid configuration that enhances both browsability and findability, shelving books by subject matter in addition to the Dewey Decimal system. While the culmination of the second floor project, funded by a private campaign named 2Reimagine, was the highlight of 2017, staff remained busy throughout the year, expanding services to the community and providing thought-provoking and entertaining free programming. In 2017, the library conducted a community survey for the first time in more than a decade, was instrumental in creating a collaborative of executive directors of Princeton’s nonprofits, created a Technology Advisory Committee of notable local and national technologists, welcomed its first library social worker in partnership with the Princeton Human Services Department and hosted its first naturalization ceremony as part of Princeton’s Welcoming Week celebration. Programming highlights included a wildly successful solar eclipse program that drew thousands to Palmer Square on an August afternoon, a series of programs as part of the town-wide Princeton & Slavery Project, a celebration of Jazz Appreciation Month in partnership with the Arts Council of Princeton and a series of screenings and events related to the Ken Burns-Lynn Novick series “The Vietnam War.” Finally, the library continued its tradition of bringing some of the world’s great authors to Princeton, presenting Isabel Allende, Krista Tippet, Elin Hilderbrand, Sharon Draper, Christina Baker Kline, Geraldine Brooks, Lynne Olson and Sonia Nazarrio, among others. 2017 was a year of reimagination and part of an ongoing celebration of words, ideas and community.
