WELCOME

This year, we celebrate the 51st Anniversary of the founding of the Friends. The Friends of the Princeton Public Library is a nonprofit organization founded in 1961 to provide support from the general public for the Princeton Public Library. Today more than 1,100 Friends contribute financially to the library through an annual appeal, ongoing and annual used book sale, the annual benefit and auction and other events throughout the year.

Julia Coale, center, with Beyond Words chairpersons Ellen Pitts, left, and Wendy Pierce Evans

The Friends’ 2012 contributions to the library will cover the major costs of new books, audiobooks, DVDs, e-reader and digital content and subscriptions, plus staff training and development, and for two-thirds of the library’s community relations and outreach fund. In addition, this year the Friends have made a $50,000 gift to refurbish the Playroom on the third floor.

The Friends provide support to the library in numerous other ways, from advocating for the Library in public forums to helping at library-sponsored events and spreading the word about the library in the community. Thank you for being a Friend of the Princeton Public Library. – Julia Coale President, Friends of the Princeton Public Library

JEFFREY EUGENIDES

J

effrey Eugenides grew up in Grosse Pointe, Michigan, and attended Brown and Stanford Universities. His novel “Middlesex” was the winner of the Pulitzer Prize and the Ambassador Book Award, and was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award, the IMPAC Dublin Literary Award, France’s Prix Medicis, and the Lambda Literary Award. It was also selected for Oprah’s Book Club. Eugenides’ first novel, “The Virgin Suicides,” was adapted into a critically acclaimed film by Sofia Coppola. In the fall of 2007, Eugenides joined the faculty of Princeton University’s Program in Creative Writing. His third novel, “The Marriage Plot,” has just been released in paperback. It was a finalist of the National Book Critics Circle Award for fiction in 2011; a New York Times notable book for 2011; and one of the top books of the year according to lists made by Publisher’s Weekly, Kirkus Reviews, and The Telegraph. The novel follows three young adults enmeshed in a love triangle as they graduate from Brown University and establish themselves in the world.

BETTY WOLD JOHNSON

T

onight we are proud to honor philanthropist and generous library supporter, Betty Wold Johnson. Mrs. Johnson’s financial commitment has been transformational for the Princeton Public Library. Her early support of the Cornerstone Campaign for the new library funded the much loved teen center, terrace and after-school study space on the library’s 3rd floor. Her generous challenge grants helped us reach our Centennial Endowment Campaign goal of $10 million which will secure the library’s financial footing. Mrs. Johnson has continued her support of the library by recently issuing another $1 million challenge grant to build an endowment for the maintenance and upkeep of the building.

Beyond Evenings with Friends

Please be sure to sign up for these exclusive events and enjoy another evening with the Friends. Signup sheets will be located in the café area of the library and will be open until 8:15 or all the spots are filled, whichever comes first! If you have secured a spot, please remember to stop at the library checkout counter after dinner to make your payment. An Evening with Elizabeth Gilbert Wednesday, December 5, 2012, 7 p.m. At the home of Emily and Johan Firmenich Our guest for the evening, Elizabeth Gilbert (Eat, Pray, Love and A Skeptic Makes Peace with Marriage”) has done a wonderful service by bringing back the “opinionated, modern-for-its-time cookbook,” At Home on the Range,” written by her eccentric great-grandmother “Gima” Yardley Potter. First published in 1947, Margaret Yardley Potter’s warm, witty stories and recipes show us that our greatgrandmothers instinctively understood that “food is central to a life well-lived.” Enjoy time with a first-rate author, great conversation, wonderful food and welcome company. Each guest will receive a copy of At Home on the Range. This event is open to the first 30 lucky people who sign on at $100 per person. An Evening with Anne-Marie Slaughter Wednesday, November 7, 2012, 7 p.m. At the home of Melanie and John Clarke Whether you’re looking for an insider’s perspective on recent world events (and election results) or a better understanding of one woman’s struggle to have it all, who better than Anne-Marie Slaughter to share her thoughts? The Bert G. Kerstetter ‘66 University Professor of Politics and International Affairs at Princeton University, Anne-Marie served as Director of Policy Planning for the U.S. Department of State from 2009–2011, the first woman to hold that position. We have read her controversial cover story in The Atlantic and heard her on CNN, the BBC, NPR, and PBS, but for one night in November we’ll have her all to ourselves. Please join us for an incredible evening of wonderful food, great conversation and, of course, great company – come with questions and an appetite and you won’t be disappointed. This event is open to the first 40 fortunate people who sign on at $100 per person.

An Evening with Frank Deford Sunday, December 9, 2012, 5 p.m. At the home of Ginny Mason and Bobby Willig Joining us for the evening will be one of the most honored and versatile writers in the country, Frank Deford. Deford begins his new memoir, Over Time, this way: “After my junior year at Princeton, it another desultory academic layby, I decided I might as well go into the Army and get it over with.” His fans follow him faithfully on NPR’s Morning Edition and in Sports Illustrated, and now we’ll be able to welcome him in person to a very un-desultory dinner. Each fortunate Frank fan will receive a copy of Over Time: My Life as a Sportswriter. This event is open to the first 40 lucky people who sign on at $100 per person. Beyond the Tigers Friday, October 26, noon Prospect House, Princeton University campus This insider’s tour of the Princeton campus will begin with lunch at Prospect House. Your host, Princeton University Architect Ron McCoy, will discuss the University’s architectural history, and then take you on a 90-minute walking tour of the campus. You will marvel at current projects as your host trains your eye on the design principles that have created this beautiful campus. Historic buildings, recent renovations, new buildings, landscapes and a special visit to a major project under construction will give you a new view of Nassau Hall and beyond. This event is open to the first 10 fortunate people who sign on at $100 per person.

Beyond The Silent Auction

We encourage you to visit the Silent Auction, which will be held in the café area of the library. To place a bid, please clearly write your name, e-mail and phone number on the bidding sheets. The auction will close at 8:15 p.m., at which time the bid sheets will be collected. Winning bids will be displayed at the library checkout on the first floor after dessert has been served. Any winners not present at the time of closing will be notified the following week to coordinate payment and delivery. 1. Beyond your Kitchen Table Creative chef/owner Marcia Willsie of Ezekiel’s Table will lead an unforgettable evening of cooking and dining for eight in the Willsies’ historic 300-year-old Princeton home. A dinner party brought to a whole new level, highlighting locally sourced foods, the four-course customized menu will be accompanied by a case of Chilean wine from the Casablanca Valley products of the Kingston Family Vineyards whose wines are

landing coveted placements on the wine lists of some of the country’s most famous restaurants. The Kingston Family Vineyards was chosen as a 2011 Winery of the Year by Wine & Spirits magazine. Celebrate a very special occasion as you cook, dine and wine with friends in this beautifully restored Princeton landmark. Your Ezekiel’s Table apron and dishcloths (and the leftover wine!) will go home with you as happy mementos. Prepare yourself for an unforgettable event! 2. Beyond the Putting Green A day of golf at Jasna Polana is the prize for four. Enjoy the use of carts and a $100 food voucher for lunch in the magnificent clubhouse after your holein-one. What a way to paint the town red! 5. Beyond Familiar Fare Enjoy a four-course dinner for eight at Agricola, Princeton’s newest restaurant opening later this fall, holding court at the top of Witherspoon Street. You will dine on the region’s freshest seasonal products at “Table One,” inside the kitchen prepared by Executive Chef and Rising Star Award-winner Josh Thomsen. Agricola’s “Table One” is the most fun, relaxed and engaging experience, providing a true farm-to-table journey. It’s like dinner and a movie – only better! Date and time to be mutually agreed upon. Excludes holidays, Saturdays and PU graduation days. 6. Beyond the Road North (with a south-of-the-border addition!) There’s more. You will find a fridge stocked with a variety of wonderful ice creams from SoCo creamery (Berkshire’s version of Thomas Sweet). Exact date and length of stay will be mutually agreed upon with the owner. 7. Beyond the Road Down East There’s a good reason Maine is known as “Vacationland.” All the ingredients for the perfect summer week are right here, waiting for you. The house is in Woolwich, Maine, between Bath and Wiscasset. It is on a tidal bay with a float for swimming and a kayak for boating. With three bedrooms the house can handle six adults. Availability is based upon arrangement with owner but basically after Memorial Day and before Columbus Day. BYO Lobster! 8. Beyond the Holland Tunnel Spend a day falling in love with New York again…and again. With your $300 gift certificate, you’ll enjoy special treatment as you dine at Chelsea’s fantastic favorite, Colicchio & Sons, “the definition of world class.” As if that wasn’t enough, enjoy a private tour of The High Line by a High Line insider, a must-do for those who haven’t been (and for those who have). Continue the magic by visiting an “off-the-beaten-track gem,” with a personal tour of the Rubin Museum of Art. Oh, what a day!

9. Beyond the Diamond And into the Diamond Club. Six tickets to a Phillies game next season (spring 2013) in the Diamond Club “the premier baseball experience” at Citizens Bank Park Field. Dinner and parking are included. Move over, Phillies Phanatics. Princeton fans are coming!

As the high bidder you and your guests will get a private tour for four of the Scheide Library, one of the greatest collections of the world. Including a Gutenberg Bible, a letter from Christopher Columbus, and Bach’s own Arias, the worldfamous collection is accessible only by special appointment (we can get you in). After this priceless tour, you might head across town to dine. While known as the world’s leading center for theoretical research and intellectual inquiry, the Institute for Advanced Study is often referred to as “the best restaurant in town. “Four adults are invited to enjoy a five-course gourmet dinner, including wine, served in the Institute’s outstanding dining hall – choose a Wednesday or a Friday. 11. Beyond Thankful Have a fest on Thanksgiving eve. Hosted by the New York Historical Society, your family will have the thrill of viewing the inflation of the giant balloons along West 77th Street for the Thanksgiving Day parade. Reserved viewing space and craft activities for the kids outside the museum’s new entrance will begin a family tradition. Enjoy the museum’s exhibitions while you are there. 12. Beyond the Bedtime Story Check in to your deluxe queen room for one night in The Library Hotel, one of the top ranked hotels in NYC. Two tickets to Morgan Library are included and two for “The Colbert Report” as well. (Hotel blackout dates November 30-December 15. Expires April 30, 2013)

OWN... have, possess, obtain for oneself 13. Beyond the Office Door For your home office or desk at work, sit pretty on this Sayl chair. The Herman Miller Sayl chair is the latest design from the offices of Yves Behar, a San Francisco designer who has an international following. This design, reminiscent of the suspension bridges that inspired it, is stunning. More important, it is comfortable! The sleek Braccino desk lamp from Trend Lighting will complement this contemporary chair. Create a great place to write your memoirs. 14. Beyond Ebbets Field We are so fortunate to be able to offer an extremely rare copy of The Boys of Summer by Roger Kahn. Jackie Robinson inscribed this beautifully preserved volume “To Charlie with best wishes and thanks for a great relationship. Jackie Robinson” with a felt-tip marker on the half-title page. Jackie Robinson died not long after signing this book in 1972, 40 years ago. Ranked No. 2 in Sports Illustrated’s 2002 list of the Top 100 Sports Books of All Time, The Boys of Summer, recreated the magic of Dodger baseball as played in Ebbets Field and the Dodgers’ 1955 World Series championship, where Jackie Robinson reigned supreme. The inscription has been authenticated by James Spence Authentication and professionally valued at $1200. 15. Beyond Imagination From mind to pen to paper, take home the handwritten words of our Pulitzer Prize winning speaker, Jeffrey Eugenides, who has the uncanny ability to write to our hearts and minds. This is the perfect gift for a graduate, mentor, teacher, reader, writer, fan, friend and/or family, or for your very own library wall. These priceless words are custom framed by Image Arts using archival materials.
